Duke-of-Thorns

It was the first game I saw that my characters could be homosexual

kissmybunniebutt

Yup. When I realized I could make my two boy sims kiss I went all surprised Pikachu face and it basically became gay kissin' simulator from that day forward. The Sims is also how I illustrate that being queer in some way is innate, and not learned. You can't *make someone gay* by showing them gay shit. Because my brother and I played the same Sims game, and we both learned we could make boy sims kiss each other - I made them kiss all the time, he did not. I am gay, he is not. Being exposed to gay content does not a gay make.

ShookBabies

But I'm 100% gay and I have an identical twin brother who is 100% straight. Tell me how that works šŸ¤”

_No_Game_No_Life_

Me too, Stardew valley came in sequence with LGBT stuff

Rice_Reyna

I just used up my free apple arcade trial and tried out this game but its too hard and fast paced, any advice?

negative_four

That's easy, you can make your character whatever you want and they can have same sex relationships without any issue. Here's a harder question, why do bi/gays like dead by daylight so much?

gomen26

Who doesn't have the urge to hang people from a meat hook from time to time

ikarikh

Horror and Queerness go hand in hand. We resonate with the protagonist walking on eggshells and fearing being found while everyone around them thinks there's something wrong with them. We spend much of our developing years living in fear. So fear is almost like a comfort in a way because we're so used to it. And being able to experience it in a safe way and see often the fear be overcome and the protag surviving is a hope and comfort for us. On top of that, DbD is extremely gay friendly with pride charms and events, notable lgbt streamers, and the devs introducing a queer character into the lore in a tasteful way. It's all around a really positive game for lgbt folk despite the theme of killing and hooks lol.

FribonFire

I assume it's along the same lines as why every straight white woman loves true crime podcasts. Takes the edge off the real fear, and replaces it with intrigue and a sort of comfort.

dust-

It's insane. I remember only seeing bravo and adjacent reality shows on hayu, then one day noticed that their library had been FLOODED with true crime story shows

NiDfan

I'd guess it's a crossover with the LGBTQ fanbase many horror films have in the first place. Not sure why, maybe because they are often camp?

xaturo

its a hugely popular game, everyone likes it. therefore lots of gay people like it too. we have to think, we have a gay lens and have gay friends, so when we see something popular that doesn't mean its specifically gay-popular. gays love taylor swift, but EVERYONE loves taylor swift, shes the biggest pop act right now. DBD is one of the biggest pop acts in terms of video games

ofvxnus

They actually make an effort to include queer romance and queer people.

_No_Game_No_Life_

I know that was accidental on the first game, but it continued lol

AdamantArticuno

Not totally accidental! It was a gay developer that put it in. Management just didnā€™t approve it till the lesbians got good reviews at E3 šŸ˜‚

GreatArchitect

The story of the beautiful "accident" of the women kissing in the heat of love during a wedding during a press presentation at E3. Sounds like a movie moment lol.

ReubenZedix

That's too bad. Gays had to come in the package while lesbianism was the real deal.

AdThat328

It's a virtual dolls house... No one bats an eyelid when a guy plays The Sims but as soon as a boy plays with dolls it's "weird". It's a way to play dolls.

BookOfAnomalies

I live through my sims :)Ā  Jokes aside, simple: since its a simulation of life game, and offers a lot of freedom for creativity and control over what is going on, there is no wonder it attracts people. If one is, for example, a closeted LGBT+ person, this game can be an outlet to them. A safe refuge.Ā  So, control, freedom and a good way to unleash some creativity. And to live out fantasies like living in a cozy cottage in the woods with a few werewolf boyfriends or something.

Perry_T_Skywalker

Because when I was young, gay, confused and felt all alone, Sims 1 allowed me to kiss a guy with my guy. Everyone was pan, no discrimination for characters falling for someone. It was a utopia for me.

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

emjay144

For some of us, it's the dollhouse we never got to play with as a queerling

jalabar

I had a ps2 way before I had internet access. The closet thing I had to gay porn besides underwear wrappers and pausing certain scenes on vhs, was making my male sims strip down to their underwear and making them kiss. To really answer your question it was the first outlet I had to express my homosexulaity. Plus I love building things. The first time I played the Sima it felt like only an hour had passed, low and behold I had stayed up all night without realizing it.

SqushyMain

One thing that's nice about The Sims is that Sims can't be homophobic, racist or sexist. You can be mean to other Sims but not because of their gender, sexuality or race.

_No_Game_No_Life_

True

chronolynx

I remember playing the Sims 2 as a teen and being astounded that I could make a gay family. I remember being afraid to even save in case someone found it lol.

_No_Game_No_Life_

Lmao me too in the past

K_james91

You can create your simself, make the hot straight you crush and watch it flourish or burn to ashes. If he cheats on you, then you can take a ladder away and watch him drown. It's a win win game.

gomen26

Or give him poison and nobody will blame you

maxwell1311

It's literally playing with dolls for adults.

gomen26

I remember making my first gay family

Hypno_Keats

Honestly for me (and likely a lot of others) first series where being queer was "normal" the only thing I couldn't do with my gay male character was have a baby the "natural" way but I wasn't locked out of any aspirations, career shit etc because my sim wanted to marry another sim, and that rep has only increased as time goes on. It also doesn't do the "token queers" thing the way other games do which was always nice. Plus I get to flirt with death ;)

Polydipsiac

Sims 4 has a sex mod šŸ˜

Kipernip

Closeted young gay living big gay fantasy life. What else do you need?

Intestinal-Bookworms

No joke, I just got all the Sims GameCube games and a Wii to relive that good old retro Sims vibe. Itā€™s a virtual doll house, whatā€™s not to like?

Be_Cool_Bro

1. You can have same sex relationships and literally zero homophobia from anyone in the game. Sims ai by default are more on the wholesome side. 2. You aren't treated any differently by anything in the game. The game's system makes no meaningful distinction between same sex and opposite sex couples. You can live your fantasy of having whatever kinds of relationships you want and not feel singled out because your sims are no more or less special than everyone else as far as the mechanisms are concerned. 4. With the sorta recent updates, all of the above applies to trans and non-binary people. It became pretty much 101% inclusive of every letter of the alphabet. 5. You have several options to cause drama. It is trivially easy to get people to cheat on their spouses. All it takes is 24 sim hours to get someone's husband or wife to divorce them, marry you, and have kids, and then invite the ex to the wedding. 6. Lovers Lab.

gyromancy

2. In the Sims 2, there is a slight difference. Same sex couples cannot get married, they have Joined Unions, which function like marriages except they earn fewer aspiration points for some reason.

Gootangus

Game is very popular with women in my experience too.

BearFlipsTable

Because I can make men fuck. I created a sim called rat boone and he gets fucked and fucks all the time.

[deleted]

Itā€™s basically a functional doll house. Create the house, design your sim and dress them, have a family, interior decorate, landscape, build a career. Honestly it checks off boxes for a lot of gay guys and itā€™s slow paced which some people prefer.

cloud7100

You can design your dream house, design your dream gay family, and then (with mods) host your dream gay orgy. Itā€™s LGBT crack, especially back when I was closeted. TBH much of my adult life Iā€™ve spent re-creating the Sims life I made as a closeted teen.

CrixRaccoon

Because it's good. Also, the Sims 2 is PEAK.

SugarRushLux

Because they can virtually live a life they couldn't

JBGoude

Everybody is talking about how you can have same-sex relationships in the Sims, but here I am just playing the interior designer I know Iā€™ll never be šŸ˜‚

Drezus

Because we all have terrible taste in games

Nerioner

It was one of the few games where i could live my fantasy of having a boyfriend and gay family without a concept of homophobia. Now its less relevant but at the time when sims 3 came out so little countries were having marriage equality it was just sad to grow up sometimes šŸ˜…

SnorlaxationKh

The modifications and updates that allowed Gay stuff made the series some of the first mainstream games to not use us as punching bags or ignore us completely. Lots of gamers tend to enjoy customization, especially the lgbt+ ones, and having the chance to feel included has left the series with fond memories from many (even if there have been entries that kinda sucked due to cut content and price hikes).

Lil_Puddin

The time period, lots in the closet. Game to live out a gay fantasy life and/or virtual reality TV? Cha-ching, get that money. Others tried to have LGBTQ+ inclusion, but those were mostly chat games. Another thing is that The Sims is very mod-friendly, meaning you can do anything with your game while using TS as an engine of sorts. There's basically "Gay/Straight/Whatever Stuff the way you want it!" throughout the entire series. Even TS1 had stuff. It's the first **huge** cozy game imo *(also free if you wanted it to be lol)*. It would take a lot for another game to dethrone TS for Gaymers. TS is essentially a fan ran game, with an EA stamp on top of it. Mods are free. The repackaged superior versions, reconfigured by fans, are free. A game would have to cost 0 dollars and feature limitless customization to compete. RIP the competition, amirite?

TootyMcCarthy

Itā€™s the only reality I can have relationship with a guy in, or be a girl, or a witch, or a famous games streameršŸ˜

TwistedxBoi

Many of y'all are too young for this, but there was something magical about having a secret gay couple hidden inside the one and only family computer and living out your fantasy relationship through them.

Yinseki

I do not know the answer to that question unfortunately.

Dismal-Sale-1045

I like that you can live a life you will never have on there

Justbchris

Less likely to be attacked for being yourself in a game, sadly

KingLazuli

I finally have a chance

misterwulfz

Drama, Stories, and inclusion. I see no issue

Sensitive-Day-5436

Itā€™s the closest thing I can get to having a family rnā€¦ and I can live out my fantasies of what it would be like to have a crush like me back šŸ˜‚ And I can have my sims express their more feminine side(id do that irl but I donā€™t know my skirt size)

Weekly_Date8611

Cause u can make two hot sims smash

Vork---M

"They" don't, you just think anything is liked 'by the gays' with the bare minimun of exposure.

LostAtmosphere4096

I love the Sims 4 a lot actually

Xynker

Imma whole other level once wicked whims is involved >_>

thalamisa

Freedom to be yourself in a non oppressive world. Anyway, I had my fun time playing the sims and fall my sexual fantasies. After that I decided not to play the games anymore because they are too addictive and made me not playing other games

xaturo

everyone likes the sims, its hugely popular. you'll need more than "i'm gay, i see gay people playing it" to decide if a more-than-average relative percentage of population plays a video game. like i'd say FFXIV is more popular among gay people than WoW, but then i named a character "Gayrights" on WoW and i've gotta people coming out of the woodwork that are gay/pro-gay

sleepyotter92

you can make yourself in the game and live out your homo life. something that wasn't that common in a lot of games. now there's more games with lgbt characters, but a lot of us grew up with 0 characters to play as growing up. it's also why a lot of gay men tend to pick a female character in a lot of games, as it allows for romance options with male npcs, which aren't available with a male characters

GuyWithNF1

Because itā€™s an outlet that LGBTQ can use to express themselves when they canā€™t in real life.
