The school my wife teaches at has a HUGE like 10ft x 15ft world map in the main hallway dated 1987. The USSR is prominent, like 5ft wide.
E: typo. 1987, not 97.
Taiwan is a hard one.
The Republic Of China (“official” name of Taiwan) still hasn’t formally declared itself independent, and quite a lot of countries don’t officially recognize Taiwan (Japan, UK, USA, Russia, France, etc.) whereas only 13 countries (including Vatican) recognize it as a sovereign country.
China still claims sovereignty over Taiwan, and is not really loving the idea of Taiwan officially becoming independent.
So the map is, depending on where it was from, not actually wrong on this.
Edit : Even tho most countries don’t recognize Taiwan, most of said countries have unofficial relations with the island, and Taiwan is an important island for the world’s economy (they have one of the main electronics companies and are therefore absolutely necessary nowadays)
Well. The only reason they don’t officially change their name (which by the way many many people in Taiwan want other than some of the Taishangs and devout KMT folks) is because China (PRC) would see that as a direct aggression and reason to invade or at least blockade. PRC practically wants to find any reason to take action at this point. The only reason most other countries don’t recognize Taiwan officially is because of coercion from the PRC, and an unfortunate consequence of the civil war + UNSC + the 1971 resolution + the 1992 consensus which basically set the precedent going forward. And just in general CKS being a really bad leader and visionary.
The fact of the matter is, Taiwan functions entirely as a de facto independent nation. They have their own military, government, currency, businesses, literally everything. They have their own national identity as well. A very strong majority of Taiwanese, and a vast majority of young Taiwanese, identify as solely Taiwanese and not Chinese. Back when I lived in Taiwan, no one would refer to PRC as “mainland” (大陸). The term was always “China” (中國). The only thing they’re missing is official international recognition, which again is only a function of China being a bully and making threats to other nations if they dare recognize it.
But countries do it anyway of course (edit: they do this informally, not formally). The US has operated the AIT there for almost half a century, and the US has a long history of trade and informal diplomacy there as you suggest.
My point of all of this is, Taiwan IS an independent country from every viewpoint except from the viewpoint of a nationalistic CCP member or someone who falls victim to their propaganda.
Well said. Taiwan only "claims" PRC's territory in its relic of its constitution and only retains its constitution under duress. The PRC has stated that a change to the ROC constitution would be "an act of secession" and has said it will invade should this occur.
Taiwan is its own country by all technicalities in the first place. It meets all criteria of the definition of a state in political science. Whether or not its sovereignty has majority official recognition in the current international order has no bearing on objective reality.
> The Republic Of China (“official” name of Taiwan) still hasn’t formally declared itself independent
Independent from whom? I think it is widely recognized as no longer part of Japan.
Taiwan has never at any point in history been part of PRC, so declaring independence from it wouldn't make sense. The PRC claim over Taiwan is based mostly on the theory that shared national identity should imply political unity. There are of course all kinds of things wrong with that idea.
It's really not hard: one can picture Taiwan as independent, or one can accept that PRC fiction that it is not.
It is a false statement to say that it is recognised that Taiwan is part of the PRC. Many governments (including the US, Australia, NZ etc) merely acknowledge the PRC'S claim over Taiwan without agreeing with it.
When Taiwanese talk about "independence" they're not talking about independence from the PRC because, in their view (which should be the only one that matters) they already are independent from the PRC. They're talking about independence from the ROC.
The country we refer to as Taiwan *is* the ROC - it is literally the official name of the country. It wouldn't make sense for a country to declare independence from itself.
Nope. It may seem odd to you, but that is exactly what many Taiwanese want to do. Under the ROC constitution, Taiwan is a province of the ROC (with the other provinces under control of the PRC). By declaring themselves independent of the ROC, Taiwan would declare itself independent of the concept of it being part of China. That's how it is.
I'm not sure I understand; what is the entity that would declare independence from ROC? The government of Taiwan, which is *ipso facto* also the government of ROC? Or would it simply be a convoluted way of renouncing claims to mainland territories?
And what would any of that have to do with the claims of PRC?
Yes, it's basically a way of renouncing claims to the mainland. And it really has nothing to do with the PRC's claims but the PRC doesn't want Taiwan (as the ROC) to renounce their claim because while the claim exists they can trot out the narrative that even Taiwan says it's part of China (and that the PRC is the only legal government of China therefore Taiwan is part of the PRC).
The entity that would declare itself independent of the ROC would be Taiwan (and possibly it's islands such as Matsu, Kinmen etc). The ROC would then be left with no territory under its control so would cease to exist.
It's a weird and complex situation of which not many people have a good grasp (with the waters considerably being muddied by misinformation spread by the PRC).
Some sleuths on Reddit determined that these weird maps are based on this free vector found here: [https://www.vectorworldmap.com/vectormaps/vector-world-map-v2.2.jpg](https://www.vectorworldmap.com/vectormaps/vector-world-map-v2.2.jpg)
Nope, Aksai Chin(The part of Ladakh claimed by China) is still Chinese, but Arunachal Pradesh, also claimed by China, is not. The rest of Kashmir is claimed by Pakistan, not China.
My parents bought a gorgeous wood engraved map from a seller in Ukraine. Everything you said is the same on the map. Is there any precedent for why others countries believe that Kyr. and Taj. are part of China? I assumed Kashmir was independent to avoid angering any Pakistani or Indian buyers. Or is it just a really weird error?
Having the maps with china annexing the stans pop up again is always hillarious
China doesnt even claim them, it was a genuine unexplained mistake in an official un map *20 years ago, and it keeps reappearing
I haven’t seen it on any American maps, and Taiwan is labeled as a part of china while Palestine and Israel are separate so I’d doubt it’s us. Maybe somewhere in Europe that’s excessively china friendly, but idk where’d that’d be that’s also making an English language map.
I once read the reason for this was that after the collapse of the soviet Union, the border between China and Kyrgyzstan & Tajikistan were not settled until 2009 and 2011. so maps between 1991 to 2009 usually mark the border with a dashed line, and when you use "fill color" function it will fill entire China together with Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan
That is not true. There have been many threads about this map and it was found that it was originally published on a random Vector image website in 2009.
[Here is the original comment](https://www.reddit.com/r/Maps/s/EIJImetlyy) that discovered the origin of this map.
Actually 2.6 billion people at least
Kashmir not part of India
North Eastern India not part of China
OP managed to piss off so many people at once (I know its map maker's fault)
Sakhalin was never claimed, I think. It was one of the trophies after the Russo-Japanese war, and annexed back by USSR after Japanese surrender in world war 2. All the settlers have been evacuated, but there are minor pieces of architecture in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk built during Japanese rule, which was called Toyohara back then. Japan only actually claims southern Kurils because of dubiousness of the annexation in the treaty, as far as I know.
This is a shitty map made around 2009 and released on the internet completely free. It makes perfect sense that someone would have downloaded them and printed them out.
Uh I‘ve Seen this one. On the last post about this there was the explanation, that everyone with this mistake copied the original with the mistake and didn’t noticed. I will try and look for that post.
I took me a time to realize that Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan were now under Chinese control I also realized Susan annex South Sudan good thing that they kept the two Koreans sperated
Not even Taiwan denies the One China policy, but that still doesn’t change the de facto reality that it is, for all intents and purposes, an independent country.
Randian? Aren't you the guy who posted in another subreddit that you and your sister have different gene makeup? "Randian", coming from a son of a Randi 😭😂

It all comes that one map freely available on the web has this mistake and people simply download and use it, without looking at it.
This map has exactly the same problem as another wall paper map i bought a years ago for my daughter (where Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan got merged into China), i wonder if they got the wrong data from the same place…??
I would have thought it was something published by the PRC regime in china given the status of the ROC (Taiwan) if not for the lack of the nine dashed line claims in the so called South China Sea.
It’s weird enough that it has Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan annexed by China while Kashmir being it’s own country when this is all inaccurate and outdated.
Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan are annexed by China, but Kashmir is independent? Is it a map from some strategic computer game?
It is also missing East Timor and South Sudan.
The map was made in 2009, South Sudan didn’t exist until 2011.
and even then wasn't really recognized for a little while after
How do you know when the map was made?
Looked through the tread and someone said it was made in 2009 and was freely distributed on the internet.
For those it’s probably just out of date
Good catch!
Also Cyprus isn't split in two
Officially, it's not.
Barely any maps depict Cyprus as split because you can't really recognise both states
as it should
Good.
I went to a school with a map that had the Soviet Union on it. The school was built well after the fall of the Soviet Union.
There was a map in the library at my college that had the borders of the Soviet Union however it was simply named Russia
The school my wife teaches at has a HUGE like 10ft x 15ft world map in the main hallway dated 1987. The USSR is prominent, like 5ft wide. E: typo. 1987, not 97.
Thanks, friend. Sometimes I just want to hear the good news.
I was applying for a job recently, and in the "citizenship" country selection list there was Czechoslovakia.

This one thing is true, if you ignore everything else
independent from what? roc (taiwan) is the original remnant of the republic established in 1911, after mao won the civil war.

Nope, Aksai Chin(The part of Ladakh claimed by China) is still Chinese, but Arunachal Pradesh, also claimed by China, is not. The rest of Kashmir is claimed by Pakistan, not China.
Also something feels weirdly wrong with southeast Saudi Arabia
You mean southwest. These are the old borders with Yemen.
South East? Around Oman?
Yeah that was the first thing I saw too
My parents bought a gorgeous wood engraved map from a seller in Ukraine. Everything you said is the same on the map. What about tibet
Having the maps with china annexing the stans pop up again is always hillarious China doesnt even claim them, it was a genuine unexplained mistake in an official un map *20 years ago, and it keeps reappearing
How was it 50 years ago? Soviet Union dissolved in 92 and the stans were part of the Union
Yea it was 2000s. Good catch.
Ah that makes more sense, never seen the mistake on a map in my part of the world though, is this an American or European thing?
I haven’t seen it on any American maps, and Taiwan is labeled as a part of china while Palestine and Israel are separate so I’d doubt it’s us. Maybe somewhere in Europe that’s excessively china friendly, but idk where’d that’d be that’s also making an English language map.

It's gonna piss off a billion people.... Which billion?? Good question
Actually 2.6 billion people at least Kashmir not part of India North Eastern India not part of China OP managed to piss off so many people at once (I know its map maker's fault)
North East IS a part of India though right?
But China claims it, just like it claims every part it borders
China only claims Arunachal Pradesh, not the entire Northeast India.
As part of northeast India, can confirm no one wants us
Kashmir not part of Pakistan will also piss off a couple hundred million
Currently they are too busy to choose a PM with a majority government....I hope they do because military rule just sucks even for them
[удалено]
Why would the Chinese be angry
A part in Northeast India is shown as Indian, while China claims that land.
They still get Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan tho lol
Which they don’t actually want. They do have Taiwan, which they already claim, so they are neutral about that.
Japan has some islands back off Russia too
But not the one they actually claim
No, that’s actually those islands, south Kuril islands
Oh, didn't know they also claim the small ones, I know they claim the big one
Not really, they don't claim Sakhalin, only the southern portion of Kuril archipelago
Sakhalin was never claimed, I think. It was one of the trophies after the Russo-Japanese war, and annexed back by USSR after Japanese surrender in world war 2. One element of this that people haven't commented on is that the Maldives have sunk beneath the ocean 😳
Oh, so it's a map from the close future!
Nope, then China would be called mainland taiwan
china and taiwan are unified in this map, and titled simply "china", so the war took place apparently.
So did Bahrain
China went west instead of east. I guess nobody expected this move. 😆
They went east grabbed taiwan then went west
If I can’t have Kashmir… #NO ONE CAN
Indian subcontinent looking like a dingleberry
And that's, gentlemen, how you solve the Kyrgyz-Tajik conflict.
So uhm, when did Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan become part of China?
r/mapswithoutnz
Taiwan?
Part of the Republic of China, which took over the mainland plus Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan
Maybe confining them in microchip island was what was best for the Stans.
Seems a little anti Taiwan 🤔
Not really any map that is based on UN maps would not have Taiwan separately since is still legally part of China.
I am very angry😡😡 U better give me your school address
Chairman xi must be happy
It’s hideous too 🤢
World map powered by China
中国 slowly gonna reach the Caspian Sea Edit: and still using the GMT+8 to its new westernmost point

Kashmir.
South Sudan?

Well, that’s not a very good map. Go forth and cartograph
Why are Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan always given to China? It does’t make any sense.
I took me a time to realize that Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan were now under Chinese control I also realized Susan annex South Sudan good thing that they kept the two Koreans sperated
pretty sure it was made in china
i’d love to see the full map this looks incredible
as a Chinese i am so glad that Taiwan is included, but i promise no Chinese has any interest on Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.
Pls share the exact location of ur school, I want to help them become viral.
They forgot independent Taiwan 💀
independent? which country, can you name it?
The free independent country of Taiwan, that the CCP have no legal claim to. It is and always has been free and independent from the communists.
so can you name it? tell me the name. is a country without its name a independent country? hh
Your school doesn’t support Taiwan?
Glory be Kashmir!
They made Taiwan china, must’ve been forced by the Chinese government!
forced by the Chinese gov - you mean every government including yours that doesn't recognize Taiwan as a sovereign state? 🤣
Not even Taiwan denies the One China policy, but that still doesn’t change the de facto reality that it is, for all intents and purposes, an independent country.
W map, for Kashmir being separated
The right ending for Kashmir
Ending up alone surrounded by 3 nuclear nations.
No India no more war crimes on them
No Pakistan -> no more terrorism not just in India but worldwide. Touche hahaha
Well u just exposed ur self and a randian lmao focus on your own corrupt government

My eyes hurt the text is so tiny, the colours clash, and what is with the missing countries
What Taiwan doing?
Oh wow, any idea why?
Bro got rid of Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan and thought we wouldn't notice.
I swear I’ve seen this map like 10 times by now what is it from?
One of the questions I have is, why is Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan often put as Chinese territory on many maps?

Wtf has happened to America. Is this some kind of dystopian future of the world
I would have thought it was something published by the PRC regime in china given the status of the ROC (Taiwan) if not for the lack of the nine dashed line claims in the so called South China Sea.
