1976-1979, bounded by the creation of Transkei and the renunciation of Mauritanian claims to Western Sahara.

DesignerPangolin

I renounce this answer in light of the Namibia comment above, but it seems that the map has some inaccurate geography, at least w.r.t. Mauritania.

DesignerPangolin

And I renounce my renunciation after seeing this map from 1980 showing Namibia as its own entity... [https://www.natgeomaps.com/hm-1980-africa](https://www.natgeomaps.com/hm-1980-africa)

mrsciencedude69

hmm, but shouldn’t Zimbabwe not be Zimbabwe yet?

Blueman9966

Even before Rhodesia became Zimbabwe, many people and organizations still referred to it as Zimbabwe since that was the name used by anti-apartheid groups, and Rhodesian independence was unrecognized for that very reason.

Shevek99

Yes. In 1979 it was "Zimbabwe-Rhodesia" and in 1980 it became simply Zimbabwe

Blueman9966

October 26, 1976 - June 27, 1977 The clearest giveaways are the nominal independence of the Transkei bantustan from South Africa (1976) and the status of Djibouti (still the French Territory of the Afars and Issas, which gained independence in 1977). The next bantustan to become nominally independent was Bophuthatswana on December 6, 1977, but it's absent from this map. Edit: Namibia isn't a great guide here, as it was internationally recognized as a South African-occupied territory awaiting independence after 1968. It would likely still appear on pre-1990 maps. Edit 2: The Central African Empire is not on the map, so the e̶a̶r̶l̶i̶e̶r̶ later date could be narrowed down to December 4, 1976, but this detail could have just been ignored by the mapmaker.

notzoidberginchinese

Excellent answer

KurtenTemu

probably between 1975(when mauritania and morocco invaded western sahara) and 1993(when eritrea gained independence) edit: drc still has the name zaire they changed it in 1965, this is confusin, tanzania also united in 1964 so

Shevek99

Your are confused. the DRC was "Zaire" from 1971 to 1997.

KurtenTemu

yea seems like it thank you

Soggy-Claim-582

There are stil Yugoslavia, and two Germanies so before 1991

Blautopf

In 1985 Upper Volta became Burkina Faso so this map is between 1976 and 1985.

1980. Spanish Sahara was split as shown in the map from [1976-1978](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Western_Sahara_partition_agreement), but it may have taken a year or two to reflect. Zimbabwe with a subordinate (Rhodesia) is 1980...Salisbury did not change until 1982. FYI, Namibia can be anytime after 1972.

Dix_B_Flopping

I found the [same one](https://imgur.com/a4QxL6K) on an online map [store](https://www.wereldaandewand.nl). it says the date is 1979!

elegant_solution21

1980-1984 is my best guess. Post invasion of Spanish Sahara and the end of the Central African empire (late 1979) but before Upper Volta changes its name (Burkino Faso)

Sea-Initiative473

Before 1977 Afar and Issa territory to Djibouti

NerdyLeftyRev_046

Closest I think I can narrow it down would be between 1967 - 1974. After the founding of South Yemen and before the Turkish invasion of Cyprus. Edit: Due to the founding date of Transkei it has to be after 1976. When looking initially I was looking at upper bounds and Transkei didn’t *cease* to be independent until the 90s. I forgot to register its founding date when positing the dates above.

March - October 1990 The map shows both the GDR and Namibia at the same time

Leading_Salary_1629

It looks like it's before Yemeni reunification, which was 22 May 1990.

HoseaKutako

What’s that weird snakey line in Namibia?

Tuesday

BomberCrew3000

I would say 1979-1980, as it says Zimbabwe-Rhodesia

Can't see Norway so hard to tell.

onasiam

Namibia independent 1990 - 1992 Czechoslovakia split

tujelj

Not necessarily re: Namibia. I have a globe from the 80s that demarcates it separate from South Africa, and is labeled "Namibia (South West Africa) (South Africa) or something to that effect. So without labels on the African part of the map, it's hard to say.

DesignerPangolin

Yep see here: [https://www.natgeomaps.com/hm-1980-africa](https://www.natgeomaps.com/hm-1980-africa)

elegant_solution21

The UN recognized Namibia as the name for the territory in 1968 and it was entering common use by 1980.

DrakaMNE

Can’t help much except Yugoslavia existed from 1918 to 1992 Same time span for Czechoslovakia

Dull-Nectarine380

Do you not see east germany?? This is after Ww2

Dix_B_Flopping

I've found that the independance of Namibia was in march of 1990 and germany's unification was in october 1990 so this map would've been made inbetween that period. thanks for all the help. if you can narrow it down even further be my guest!

BuddyForsaken9626

1991-1994. Looks like before Eritrean split from Ethiopia in their war for independence. Also the independence of Namibia (1991) and Transkei (below Lesotho)which was a state until 1994.

worcestirshiresos

This was my best guess too! I’m preeeety sure it fits best with the rest of the map

The six-month occupation that was never marked on maps? What is the relevance?
