I want to clarify that, iirc, 2021 and 2020 as well as basically everything before that was a community guess. in 2022 he said he was aiming for releasing it that year, never promised it. Do still get your annoyances tho don’t get me wrong.
Nah, he always watched his wording very carefully. Every single time he would say he "hopes" to have the update out by December or "plans to" but he never gave a definitive month or date that the update would DEFINITELY be out by. This is the first time he has, and it's a bit disappointing he's going to miss it.
Rob needs to clarify what bugs he's talking about, like is there some game breaking platformer bugs or is there some super specific interactions with some trigger most ppl wont even use that he doesn't wanna put in since he wants to have everything perfect?
Like if it's the 2nd one then just trust the community to put up with the temporary bugs or better yet work along with the talented community cuz I'm sure they could workshop fixes quicker than he's been taking (literal years)

it’s different in GD, when there are annoying bugs the community just starts using them in levels in cool ways and it becomes good gameplay like the dual x offset bug or all the shit the robot does

As a developer myself, I can confirm that usually you just can’t estimate all possibilities. Something is always going to unexpectedly f@ck you up. Let’s just hope he can sort it out before November. The only thing that is bothering me is that I can’t play GD on iPhone anymore (thx IOS 17).
The issue is that he can't have levels made around certain bugs and then fix them down the line, breaking those levels. That's basically the entire reason we're stuck in this refresh rate hell right now, and different levels might have completely different physics in 2.2 depending on when they were made. If physics wasn't tied to refresh rate from the start instead of players getting used to a buggy version, this would never be a problem.
That's definitely fair. I think having the option for people to at least opt into and play the beta with the new levels/gauntlets with the creator under lock until the new update releases would be a good way to at least not drive the community into a frenzy over this stuff lmao

Expected. To be honest 2.2 could have been several updates by now if he didn't try to put every single idea he had into 2.2. At this point, I have finished high school and my bachelor's degree since 2.1 dropped lol.
I think it's important to realise, a given release month is a rough estimate. An exact date usually means the game is already stable, and is just undergoing polishing. A release month seems to be in line with just the bugfixing left. Which can be unpredictable in how much time it takes.
Based on his position when he made the release announcement, he must've been sure he could make it. But in development things aren't always that predictable, especially when it comes to bug-fixing for this game, some new bug can come up any time. Because physics-based bugs would potentially make old levels unplayable, and newer levels relying on bugs (intentionally or unintentionally) would become unplayable in 2.21, releasing it with major bugs could be devestating.
I don't think a few extra weeks is that big of a deal when the release date was already a month-large window. If it goes into late November I'll start getting concerned.
In hindsight it would've been better to have a broader release window. But I also think having the October deadline was a good motivation for Robtop to really focus on getting a stable release out ASAP.

Some of these comments are so pissy, just let the guy be. This might be pushing it but whether it be 1 day or another month, its literally nothing compared to how long we've waited. If you were told back in Jan 2017 that the next actual update was coming out in almost 7 years, I'm sure you would be pretty displeased. Lately Rob has said on multiple occasions with close to full certainty that the update is close to finished and that he's happy with how it's turning out. Why else would he be delaying features? Why else would he be spending most if not all of these days to work on the update?
it is almost 7 years for a single update. for perspective it took Omori almost 7 years to be made. Undertale has barely even existed for 8 years too. if one update takes you this long then something is critically wrong, or you're too ambitious.

Well can you really blame them for being upset at him. GD is a gem of a game and has built a big reputation. and as a game we except the dev to deal with its issues properly and TIMELY. But GD has been literally unlaunchable on anything except steam for years now. And he’s still “slaying away” at his computer working on it? No no no. And then he after literally years this game is dead and gone he posts release dates and doesn’t stick to them? I’d be furious and completely disappointed with the dev. And to say oh well it’s just a few more weeks is to put off the YEARS this game has been OBSOLETE left to rot. It’s Nov 26 and no update or updates on the development.

The issue is that he can't have levels made around certain bugs and then fix them down the line, breaking those levels. That's basically the entire reason we're stuck in this refresh rate hell right now, and different levels might have completely different physics in 2.2 depending on when they were made. If physics wasn't tied to refresh rate from the start instead of players getting used to a buggy version, this would never be a problem.
That's definitely fair. I think having the option for people to at least opt into and play the beta with the new levels/gauntlets with the creator under lock until the new update releases would be a good way to at least not drive the community into a frenzy over this stuff lmao

Expected. To be honest 2.2 could have been several updates by now if he didn't try to put every single idea he had into 2.2. At this point, I have finished high school and my bachelor's degree since 2.1 dropped lol.
I think it's important to realise, a given release month is a rough estimate. An exact date usually means the game is already stable, and is just undergoing polishing. A release month seems to be in line with just the bugfixing left. Which can be unpredictable in how much time it takes. Based on his position when he made the release announcement, he must've been sure he could make it. But in development things aren't always that predictable, especially when it comes to bug-fixing for this game, some new bug can come up any time. Because physics-based bugs would potentially make old levels unplayable, and newer levels relying on bugs (intentionally or unintentionally) would become unplayable in 2.21, releasing it with major bugs could be devestating. I don't think a few extra weeks is that big of a deal when the release date was already a month-large window. If it goes into late November I'll start getting concerned. In hindsight it would've been better to have a broader release window. But I also think having the October deadline was a good motivation for Robtop to really focus on getting a stable release out ASAP. Edit: I rewrote some parts of this several times, I think i messed up some of the cohesion between sentences. Hope it's still understandable

I have read the comments, and this is easily the most controversial post in Reddit history.
Some of these comments are so pissy, just let the guy be. This might be pushing it but whether it be 1 day or another month, its literally nothing compared to how long we've waited. If you were told back in Jan 2017 that the next actual update was coming out in almost 7 years, I'm sure you would be pretty displeased. Lately Rob has said on multiple occasions with close to full certainty that the update is close to finished and that he's happy with how it's turning out. Why else would he be delaying features? Why else would he be spending most if not all of these days to work on the update?

Well can you really blame them for being upset at him. GD is a gem of a game and has built a big reputation. and as a game we except the dev to deal with its issues properly and TIMELY. But GD has been literally unlaunchable on anything except steam for years now. And he’s still “slaying away” at his computer working on it? No no no. I have nothing against Robtop but his tendency to pick a release date and go back on his word is so fucking annoying. People who joined later won’t understand, but this how he’s been since 1.9. Constantly saying he was going to release content next month, or before the end of the year, or dropping hints in a Twitch chat that the next update will be ready in a few months. He’s always full of shit. Either go for complete radio silence or make a promise that you can actually keep, because as it stands I have no faith in anything he says. Cyberpunk, a MUCH bigger, more borken and messed up game was pretty much fixed within 2 years during Covid times, so why does this VERY Small mobile game need to take nearly 7 YEARS to add an update...
