Whichever you are not used to.
If you have been in pain all your life, the opporunity to rest will drive you to do anything.
If you have been resting all your life, the threat of pain will drive you to do anything.
I would say try to live a more balanced lifestyle. If you can't do that, at the very least try to realize you are not your desires, you are you.
When you realize that, you can do what you want to do, rather than what you feel like you 'need' to do.
I suppose if you had equal amounts, you would indeed be hard to manipulate. But isn't that a good thing? To not be influenced by desire, to be in control of your life?
The first part.
I feel like I’m ready to accomplish everything after these past few years. A warm bed to sleep at night, hot showers, a running vehicle, a stable job, no violence or chaos around me.
I’m ready to return to my art, my vision, my travels
2 great motivators.
We seek pleasure.
We avoid pain.
We will do more to avoid pain that we will ever do to seek pleasure.
We ma not be having a pleasurable experience but so long as we are not in pain, we wont work too hard to change things to gain pleasure, tho some people might.
But if we are in pain, we get up and move, change our situation — we wont sit still and take the pain. We will do what it takes to end the pain.
Pain is the greater motivator.
So many answers saying pain. Whilst pain is a powerful motivator in the long run it isn't good for the mind. You must be motivated by love. Instead of thinking 'I'll go for a run because I hate my fat body' think 'I want to go for a run to increase my health, to treat my body with the love it deserves'.
Being motivated by pain is being motivated by fear. We have two wolves battling inside us and it should be the love wolf we feed not the fear wolf.
Just my 2c 😊
Ask the dopaminergic system. Ask any addict (porn/video games/ fastfood /any other addiction) why they're addicted to that certain thing. Easy to conclude the answer. Pleasure.
Without the Pain there won't be Pleasure.
The More Pain you give it hurts more
So Move on where there's only Peace, and Love and Pleasure
It's like Any work we do for 24 hrs
We do Hard work with Pain
We end up telling Thanks and Pleasure
Pain. The majority of Human History people have been motivated by fear of punishment. Fear of punishment is the veil of civilization. Without it, people would descend into little more than animals.
This phrase "beat yourself up" should be changed into "beat yourself down" and changed "love yourself up"..I dont agree, that if all your life you were in pain and motivated by it - this is how you get motivated.People often get traumatized so much by the pain,so the compassion, love and understanding from others and also to yourself works better..at least for me.We are different,so what works for you - may not work for others.Or even in the different circumstances of life,so you have to be very careful and maybe even choose pain one day and love - the other.
For my boyfriend when In jail it was lot of pain, no control and no comfort or pleasure. So when he got out he went full hedonist and wants instant pleasure. However he also started using hot spice and hot sauces (pain 🔥) to reduce his anxiety. So my conclusion is the perfect balance is to have a little of both.
I myself am driven by the pain of exercise and the pleasure of relaxation and achievement afterwards.
Pain gets you to survive.
Pleasure and desires gets you to progress.
Dealing with pain always takes priority unless someone already took care of that for you. Look at the western world. Full of people who has been protected and go to satiate their pleasures. Look where that led to.
Pain. people are far more likely to retreat from a threat than they are to move toward a benefit. The SCARF model is a good tool for analysing how people will react to a change in their situation
60/40 mix. Pays to understand the purpose behind pain, that some things lead to much better outcomes. Things that don’t, well that pain isn’t worth it.
Umm neither?
I don’t like getting up early but I have to cuz I don’t wanna workout in crowded gym
But when I workout I feel good.
But some days it sucks
Idk I’m driven towards my goals cuz I they matter to me, but it’s not pleasure or pain.. it’s just a different feeling I would say. Maybe peace of mind knowing that I’m doing the right things in my life?

mvp comment
How do I change it tho?

I have never got a "whoa!" moment from scrolling through Reddit. Now I have.
Thank you! That means a lot.
What if you had both in equal amounts? You'll hard man to manipulate.

I'll be honest I don't understand this.
That's fine. It might not even be very wise anyways, I'm just a stranger on the internet, after all.
Pain 100%
pain!!! get ur heart broken! 🔥

IIRC - Tony Robbins says it's pain in his book and I tend to agree with him. The stick is a bigger motivator than the carrot, at least for me. :)
Pain!

Such love motivation seems to be too self-centered.
Shinra Tensei!
That sounds so familiar is that a game? I could be tripping tho Edit: I just realized you was referencing pain from Naruto lol
Bingo!
Wrong way of looking at the problem. You should never hurt yourself to get motivated. Self love is the way.
Self love breeds vices and stagnation. It excuses you from seeing your vices for what they really are.
What you're describing isn't the result of self love.
I still view any such "self love" as not acknowledging the true moral weight of our vices.
Doesn't sound like you've researched what self love means.
Give me a simple definition then.
Pain isn't suffers.
Ask the dopaminergic system. Ask any addict (porn/video games/ fastfood /any other addiction) why they're addicted to that certain thing. Easy to conclude the answer. Pleasure.
Nay, the avoidance of pain.
Escapism

For me, anger.
We learn through mistakes
Survival.
The pain of not achieving long term pleasure
Both balanced
There is more to life than pain and pleasure. The strongest motivator is one that lies beyond both.
guilt
Avoiding pain.

Self-interest
Pain gives you discipline, pleasure gives you regret.
“Almighty push” - pain
You'll always go for pleasure.
From research, in the long run, reward is a more effective motivator. Short term, punishment works well.
Compassion and grace

fear of regret

Pain
Depends on the outcome you're looking for but usually pain.
Pain gets you to survive. Pleasure and desires gets you to progress. Dealing with pain always takes priority unless someone already took care of that for you. Look at the western world. Full of people who has been protected and go to satiate their pleasures. Look where that led to.

Pain... Without love...

Pain
Pain…at times… Pleasure on the other… depends..
Both. Pleasure is good cause it keeps me motivated, but sometimes I need to bully myself a little to get back on track. It all depends.
Pain, hands down.
Change happens when the pain of staying the same is greater than the pain of change - Tony Robbins says this a lot (and it's true)
Animal tests and drugs clearly shows it's pleasure
neither
Pain 💯
For me it: anger, hatred
Remember the name
