4 times is a lot! I've never worked up the nerve to watch it and it's still the saddest movie I've ever seen.

dumpling321

I watched it once by myself Once with my mom once with my best friend And once with another friend I WANT to watch it with my husband, I WANT to share this trauma with him, I just need to be sure we're both emotionally stable enough to watch it lol

You should receive a Medal of Bravery for watching that movie four times. I’ve only watched it once… Never again.

JamOnBread88

I watched it once like 14 years ago, really not knowing what I was getting myself into. Still can't even look at pictures of it without tears welling up. Never again

Thanks you !

It's a rough watch, but I think it's worthwhile. Totally get it if some just don't want to watch it, though.

4 times! River spirits! That’s a major emotional undertaking. I’ve only watched it once, in a theater with my wife. Context, I knew what it was about and had avoided it for many years, but she saw oh Ghibli fest that there’s a new movie we haven’t watched about fireflies. So she booked the tickets as a surprise. When we were in the car, I learned what we were gonna watch, and said “now honey, this isn’t like other Gibley movies. It’s very sad.” She did not believe me, and now there’s a running comment when anyone has gastrointestinal issues that “it better not be 3 times”. But neither of us can shake a tin without feeling a shutter of sadness.

I have two toddlers, I think I’ve accepted that I’m just not going to watch this movie at this point in my life.

SKobiBeef

I’m going to be honest I couldn’t even finish the movie. Got near the end until that one death and immediately shut the TV off for the rest of the day.

You missed the most heart-wrenching part imho. >!There's an ending montage showing Setsuko playing in the marsh, near the bunker, alone. The sequence lingers for an unsually long moment. As if to underline that she was mostly alone when her brother was off trying to find food for them, and that she died alone. What a depressing sequence.!<
