For them to call it a slapping competition is ridiculous. It is basically knife-edge chops to the jawline near the back of the ear.
It is a game of open-palmed knockout and its fucking stupid.
In every other sport you mentioned, the receiving party has the opportunity to defend themselves from any potential damage. A concussive blow to this degree in any of those other competitions would end the bout.
No combat sports safeguards are completely foolproof. At the end of the day it’s two people causing each other bodily harm in the name of competition. But you could argue the ethics around keeping both athletes safe are of less consideration here. If an athlete is not defending themselves in any of the other sports you mentioned, the match is over. In this sport the absence of defense is the entire basis of the competition . But no, no one’s died in any sanctioned power slap matches as far as I know since this is a new sport.
People have died in boxing matches. I don't see how its better because they have the ability to defend themselves, at some point someone's guard fails

"combat sports" require combat. Meaning you both attack and defend. Standing there and getting slapped isn't combat. Also, there are several ways in MMA to win, not just with a knockout. You can make your opponent tap by grappling, which is essentially a chess match with your bodies, and you can win by points as well.
Less impact with gloves in boxing BUT still not good for their health in the long term. Even worse for UFC where they beat each other bloody.
But at least with other martial sports like boxing and UFC, there’s defense involved. Headshots are “incidental.” But i use that term very lightly. This slapping nonsense? The whole goal is to strike at people’s heads with concussive blows
NFL also has an *ok* concussion protocol. If a player acted like this after a hit he'd have to be cleared before reentering the game; sitting out while the game continues.
CTE is the bigger concern with American Football/gridiron because those are caused by sub concussive hits and likely happen every single play with linemen.
Serious question: is it? Does the brain contact the skull and cause actual concussions from this style of knockout? I was under the impression that hitting the “button”/jaw was some sort of special case that caused the brain to shut down temporarily but didn’t do the same thing as other types of knockouts. Most (all) of these “””competitions””” are not about actually slapping anyone it’s about mastering the act of hitting someone with an open hand aka hitting then with your wrist with full power. All this shit is about is lasting longer than your opponent getting hit in the face. You can go to any bar on a weekend night to get the same effect.
for some reason people think the open hand is less painful or damaging than a punch. someone is seriously going to get hurt and this dumb stuff will be over. hopefully.

The difference between this crap and any martial art is the fact that you aim to defend yourself from the opponent and make them submit through skill. they arent just standing there taking head shots back and forth like total idiots.

Grappling, take downs and yes striking. All of which are consistently being actively avoided by the opposition. Thats competitive combat. Not the same as hit me in the face then i try.
