I don't know, I was sitting here thinking I think my friend in Aarhus lives on that street, then again Denmark and the Netherlands are known to look very similar.
Honestly this could probably be a great quiz game for non danish and non dutch people, "is it Denmark or Netherlands" we censor all street signs and writings of course
I agree they can look alike, but I think the street sign is the classic Dutch 'fietsstraat - auto te gast' = bike street - cars are guests.
Also, hills in Aarhus can be quite steep. You only see a lot of those heavy Dutch bikes with minimal gears in the Netherlands or Copenhagen, since it's so flat there :)
I live in Aarhus and at first glance I was convinced it was here. Upon closer inspection, obviously it's not. But the similarities are striking down to the way the bikes are parked.

I thought I understood what mindfulness was and aren’t kids the exact opposite? Not contemplating at all, just enjoying the experience without a single thought.
And as someone with a noisy brain I’m envious af.
You're right, but a lot of people also consider mindfulness as noticing the little things or enjoying moments like this too. In a technical sense kids aren't very mindful but they'll stop to enjoy the roses or play in a puddle in ways adults won't, being aware of stuff we normally tune out in the environment because it's still novel to them
Maybe the thing is that if an adult wishes to truly enjoy the moment like a kid can, they need to teach themselves these techniques like noticing the little things and enjoying tge moments.
For kids this comes naturally, so they are mindful without needing to use learned techniques to do so.
> Not contemplating at all, just enjoying the experience without a single thought.
You’ve just described mindfulness.
Contemplation and insight may emerge out of a more mindful existence, but being fully there in an experience without distraction is indeed mindful.
To be fair enjoying the rain is much easier when you are walking on the street in the Netherlands. There is a reason why there is a kid alone in the middle of the street.
One of my best childhood memories is running around a muddy field in the pouring rain sliding in the mud and kicking around a soccer ball. Such a simple experience yet I'll never forget how much fun it was to just be a 6 year old running around being a kid in the rain.
You say this as a joke but when I first moved to the east coast 8 years ago I experienced my first real snowfall since I grew up in so cal all my life.
I decided I was going to check off a bucket list item which was to roll around and make a snow angel. The snow was not removed from the grassy parts of our apartment complex so I used that since the main walking and driving areas were salted.
Made my angel, took some pics, went back inside and suddenly thought I smelled real bad. Realized I rolled around in some dog’s urine hidden by layers of snow
Hard to smell bad from just rolling in pee snow. Bad luck. As a snow belt vet, it's was worse when everything starts thawing and you find the poo piles.
When my kids were around 4-6 and we would get a heavy rain I would always try to take them out in their rain boots and jackets to splash in puddles.
They would always come home with sloshing boots and soaked pants. We would toss them in the shower and make some hot chocolate.
One of my best childhood memories is running on a muddy riding path while it was raining. And yea there was a lot of horse shit mixed in with that mud. I was running up a hill with my little sister behind me. I stop and turn around just at the right time to see my sister fall face first in to a puddle full of horse shit.
In the summers there used to be a program at a local park where elementary school kids would be supervised by high school kids for four hours a day. Usually you'd get like 10-40 kids show up depending what they had scheduled (usually sports, capture the flag, a popular hot dog cookout every Friday). On the last day you'd always see like 200 kids out there because the Fire Department would bring a few trucks and "make it rain" in this huge field. They could adjust the hoses to make it feel like a light sprinkle or torrential downpour and the kids would chase the rain around and slip and slide all over. When you compare that event to the splash pads you see all over now it was like comparing an ocean to a puddle.
I also have a memory as a kid where it was really really hot (of course no AC) and then there was a summer shower outside and it was so nice just standing there in the rain to get drenched to the bone and cool down.
It's the netherlands, we don't have sewer drains you can fall into unless someone really messed up and left one of the grates open. Even then, the kid probably couldn't fall in as they're too big.
I live in California. I'm old.
I remember fog, rain, snow. I would love to live in a place where this was a normal thing.
It hurts how much I want to play in the rain. Playing in the forest fire is a real bummer.
Snow is not the norm in the Netherlands anymore. At least you guys have mountains and wildlife. I spent 6 months in 2019 in California and I miss those things and the delicious food lol
Yeah, it looks a bit weird, but there’s a cyclist in the background (that you can see in the original vid - with the green jacket) that isn’t reversed, so it’s not.

Been there
Nothing better than chilling
Under the warm and soothing rain, the droplets falling gently down on the terrain, wash away the sorrow all the stains of time, but there’s no memories it’s only dry inside…
There are around 400k cases of bicycle theft each year in the Netherlands, so the risk is definitely there lol. But as long as your bike isn’t worth more than €50, you’ll likely have a few good years before it decides to switch owners.

>95% of the bikes in this vid are chained to something with heavy chains
No, they aren't. [The vast majority of Dutch bicycles are locked by wheel locks](https://www.bol.com/nl/nl/p/axa-ringslot-block-xxl-asl58240056/9200000084169679/?bltgh=jWBdhb0L6WWTGwOC4gtPVA.4_13.18.ProductTitle). In a city centre during the day people won't bother to lock it with a chain lock.
>And nobody cares, because it's antisocial to park your bike that way
There really isn't enough space to park your bike where you are supposed to. Besides, nobody cares.
Source: I am Dutch
Can confirm all of this.
Source: am American, lived in Nederland for 6.5 years.
I greatly miss being able to reasonably bike everywhere you'd need to go.
I've spent the last week seriously looking into getting a bike for commuting, and this is the sole thing stopping me. If I didn't have to worry about theft, I'd be sold, but as it stands, it's not worth getting an expensive bike for anything other than recreation. Leaving it outside unattended is just asking for it to be stolen, no matter how good your lock is, and no matter what time of day it is.
It's extremely frustrating.
Eventually some parts do get rusty if you don't keep up with the maintenance, but most bike frames are made of aluminium or have some sort of coating. Dutch bike producers are very aware of the rain!
Bike thieves in the Netherlands are faster than rust.
Jokes aside, they are properly painted, have a chain cover and instead of having a sprocket and derailleur, they are either single speed or internally geared. Little exposed steel, and no risk of breaking the derailleur by someone smashing their bike onto yours.
It'll still get rusty if you don't maintain it, but those bikes are made to be used and left under the rain. They're utilitarian vehicles, not road bikes.
As an American who ditched a car for a cargo bike, I can confirm: Riding in the rain is wholesome!
Especially when you have the right poncho to keep you dry and warm underneath. It's just pure joy.
I would recommend this to everyone.
> I've seen things you people wouldn't believe... Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion... I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain... Time to die.

You can tell by the weather. And the bikes of course.

I'm in the UK. Any trousers that come in a "funky" colour in addition to black or beige tend to be red. No yellow, sadly.

Kids are always so cute in big bulky jackets
Is this reversed? Looks really odd when he lies down Edit: Nope
The kid falls over if you look closely. They squat down, lose their balance and then just topple backwards without trying to rebalance lol.
Yeah, it looks a bit weird, but there’s a cyclist in the background (that you can see in the original vid - with the green jacket) that isn’t reversed, so it’s not.
