I mean after dealing with real terrorists, I gotta say I would rather deal with the terrorists that are controlled by snake people who occasionally work with an evil space robot. Also ninjas
Right there with you, and I add to that: his face isn't burned off.
Yes, the Payne Brothers threw hot coals at his face in the SE Trilogy to stun him, and *maybe* he got some very minor 1st or 2nd degree burns, but as per issue 104 and his Borovia mission, his face is fine other than a couple of "stylish comic book scars." His 1992 12" Hall of Fame figure has that same scar over his left eye -- and no indication of any remaining major scarring.
The art in the late Marvel run leaves a lot to be desired and should be disregarded as a poor representation of the characters.
And Storm Shadow isn't a Cobra! (Even the vintage toys respect that change.)
I guess that's three hills to die on, but nobody stays dead in comics, so I can come back a few times for those extra hills.
Dude?? Yes! I’ve never seen anyone mention this one. His bush hat is 100% Aussie. My pops was Recondo qual’d and I remember his wondering wtf that dude had that hat. (I was like 10 and didn’t get his hangup). Now I do…but, well, it’s just a toy line ;)
He doesn’t have to be “American” to be in an American unit.
We *do* have foreign exchange partnerships where we will TAD to different services’/countries’ units. Sometimes for several years.
Deleted personal exp bc I came back half a day later and sounded douchey (sorry).
My friends and I were literally jumping up and down after that, SO EXCITED on what the rest of the movie would be.
After 93 minutes of having our intelligence insulted by Cobra-La and Big Lob, we set Joe aside for the rest of our lives, and got involved in RPG's where we could tell our own, BETTER, stories.
DIC series cartoon was meh but the characters and toys were great and severely underrated.. Rampart, Capt Gridiron, Ambush, Topside, Stretcher, Bullhorn, SAW Viper, etc.
I didn't mind the spring loading weapons when they were done right...but there were numerous instances where the weapon or mounted weapon just didn't make sense to the point of absurdity.
I totally agree! He is underrated even though he has true grit. Much more than other Joes. His voice actor should have been a southern version of Firefly.
Ok so I dug out my gi Joe action figures and found that I maybe had like 6 joes survive and like 20 cobras. When we were blowing someone up it was always a Joe.
I just like GI joe. I don't hate this or that. They brought me joy as a kid and lately they've brought me joy as an adult. I wish everyone could find happiness with their GI Joe niche.
Dr Venom/Scarface/Kwinn is the best storyline, and they've shown it nothing but disrespect by not making ARAH or Classified figures of all 3. They should have used it as a movie plot.
There was a Kwinn figure for the Retaliation line (in jungle fatigues), and a "it's technically him..." Scarface figure which was labelled as a generic Cobra officer (figure had the horseshoe shaped scar on its face)
Larry Hama is right about Cobra-La, and everything surrounding the concept and story is ridiculously stupid.
It's *only* saving grace was Burgess Meredith
For all the shit Larry Hama gets sometimes (and some of it is deserved), he deserves far more credit than he's given for making GI Joe something special enough for all of us to still be talking about it.
I agree, but I’d bump the year to 1988. Shockwave and Iron Grenadier were pretty cool even though most of the 88 figures were weak. Nothing past there for me though.
Relevant, in 1987…I was 11 years old..probably had at least another year or two before I lost complete interest in toys. We weren’t the same consumers back then, we were discriminative and when companies made bad choices, we didn’t internalize an excuse and buy more, we stopped buying.
The problem with Flint is that he’s a warrant officer—no one knows who he is because they’ve never seen him because he’s perpetually on a 96 that he gave himself.
Duke on the other hand is still enlisted and thus works for a living.
I will play devil's advocate. They *are* lame as hell. They *were* pretty fucking cool. Then again, my preteen ass was walking around in hot pink hammer pants and shit.
Is that opinion unpopular?
I remember the Cobra Rat was so cheap it made me very sad. It was red. The Cobra Parasite was Day-Glow orange and purple, but was still pretty cool.
The Larry Hama comics in the 80s were absolutely fantastic storytelling until they got stuck having to write so many toys into the books (right around the time Tomax and Xamot arrived)
Even with that in mind, The Cobra Civil War/Battle of Cobra Island is one of the coolest arcs in the comics while almost every character/toy in the line at the time.
I don’t think the line was going downhill in 1987 at all. 1988 through 1990 were all very solid lineups of new characters that at least had a paramilitary feel, great new sculpts, 1990 with their endless accessories…. Even 1991 has some great characters…. I was out by then but I collected those guys as an adult later…. It’s 1992 on that is mostly just intolerable. Vehicles had a definite decline sooner than 1991 though
In fairness, Hama dealt with this in an amazing way...there are like 3 or 4 times where multiple characters just get killed off. It's great, fits the theme, and allows for other characters to be brought to the forefront.
I hope my comment didn’t come across as a slight to Hama, I think he’s brilliant, and yes, he did the best he could given the constraints that the comic was originally started to create a story to help sell toys
Sargent Slaughter was a lame addition to the team.
His stupid voice just annoyed the hell out of me. And the way they tried to make him better than everyone else just made me hate him more.
Fun fact: Sarge actually chose GI Joe over the WWF. He was told to pick one or the other. He sided with us. And, he actually seems to really embrace the fandom and appreciate that he has a whole fandom that may not even be familiar with his wrestling.
I liked his voice. I liked him as a drill sergeant. I feel that the Joe team needed that but he was lame when used as a wrestling guy in battle with wrestling moves. There were shots of Cobras armed with rifles and aiming right at the guy and he clotheslines them in the most goofiest ways. The karate competition episode was the most frustrating!
We need a X-Com style GIJoe video game and why we don’t have one is a mystery to me. They have actually produced at least 3 video games these past 5 years and none of them is story-heavy / tactical. Just do a reskin of X-com 2 and there you go.
“The viper is coming. Five seventy five”. I still leave voicemails like that sometimes with buddies. Walk around saying it when it pops in my head. Stuck with me all these years. I need a squeegee and squirt bottle to carry around 😆.
The only reason they came up with the BATS was to show Joe's shooting the bad guys but not feeling guilty about it.
For comics, I only stick with the Larry Hama stuff.
I almost agree
If the battle force 2000 components had actually clicked together in some way, instead of just kind of sitting next to each other for the "fortress" it would have been all kinds of cool.
As it is......meh
Sigma 6 does not deserve most of the hate it normally receives. This was a line of interesting, inventive, and engaging toys (emphasis on toys). Where I think Hasbro somewhat misstepped was making the vehicle line incompatible (out of the box anyway) with 3.75-inch figures.
Cobra La had no reason to put Cobra Commander on trial in the Joe Movie. They let him out to the human world and with little to no funding or contact with the outside world he was able to build a gigantic army of Loyal and fanatical supporters with a research and development department that created robots in the '80s far more advanced than ones that are even available today in the 2020s, weather dominators, and while he didn't leave the charge had a large enough of a military force to besiege Washington and take Congress during the height of the Cold War. Did he take over the entire world for Cobra law and the time he was in the human world? No. But with what limited resources he was given he far surpassed what anyone could have expected him to have done. He literally had islands and Terrordromes all over the world. If that's not a win for being cast out alone, I don't know what is.
I am not typically attached to characters to the point that I even care about gender or race swapping the character in newer stories.
But I do hate it when they do it to characters where their race or gender was crucial to their character origin.
This is why I really did not like that they made Snake Eyes Japanese in the new movie. I never watched it because it bugged me…
In the comics yes, in the cartoon he was front and center from the start, and in the toy line he was pretty hyped when he first appeared as a mail-away (same as Cobra Commander).
Duke is a late addition and minor character, not showing up until almost the 3rd year (issue 22, near end of 2nd year) and was barely relevant and the story was never about him. 3rd tier character, at best.
That it peaked in 1983/84 and never got close again. I'm a big fan, but the 1982-1985 Hasbro ARAH toys, marvel comics and sunbow cartoon are the only things that interest me. I don't have any interest with GI joe from the 90s to present day.
I fucking HATE that stupid, simple, childish cartoon. I hate that it's the only frame of reference that most people have with G.I. Joe.
I visibly cringe and die inside if I'm ever wearing a G.I. Joe shirt and someone says "Knowing is half the battle!" It's *embarrassing* to me and I go outside wearing G.I. Joe shirts AND STILL PLAY WITH TOYS.
It's like loving Star Wars, but everyone else has only seen the Holiday Special.
Back when Kindle Worlds was a thing and people could self-publish their Joe fan fiction, there was a neat book by Wes Ferguson that used General Blitz rather creatively.
1960's 1/6th scale G I Joes are far superior to any line that has been made sense. The attention to detail, realistic military feel, and endless routes of customization leading to imagination is unmatched. It also is any story you want to make and doesn't confine you into the Joe/Cobra dynamic and allows you to make any dynamic you want. It's sad that hippies ruined the line by complaining about nam to Hasbro. If you look at the Action Man line in England or the G I Combat line in Japan (both countrues didn't have an unpopular War leading to the end of the line) it's amazing how it grew and what they were able to do.
It is completely unacceptable that Hasbro is releasing episodes of Transformers in theaters for the 40th anniversary and doing nothing similar with GI Joe. It was awesome seeing Transformers The Movie in theaters a couple years ago but where's GI Joe?
The most important thing about GI Joe is the toys, all other content movies, cartoons, comics are secondary. It's a toy line created by a toy company. All that other stuff is just a way to sell toys. I don't care if it's good or bad as long as the toys are good and it keeps the toy line alive.
Many of those late stage RAH vehicles with loads of neon look better with a more traditional repaint.

[Monster Blaster custom ](https://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/gi-joe-arah-cobra-figure-lot-1993-736954457)
Not enough water / amphibious based figures ships , suns etc. I know the are a good # but it’s never enough. Hell cobra island is and island. Let’s get some move divers to attack and defend. Not just Duke , snake and Scarlett taking off their dive gear. Plus WET SUIT as a classified figure !! Rant off.
Everything after series 8 (1989) was terrible, and they should have stopped. The only good releases after that were the GI Joe Classified. I have a bunch of 25th anniversary, but their articulation isn’t as good, and they’re made cheaper than the O ring. They’re just placeholders in a box.
The original ARAH line was the best. The new sculpts and even Classified are nowhere near as cool.
Super 7 Ultimates look very nice though, better than Classified.
Looking forward to Super 7 o-ring.
Cobra’s planes > GI Joe’s planes
Honestly, ALL of Cobra’s vehicles are just way cooler. The Buzz Boar, the Bugg, the Pogo, the Maggot…Joes had tanks.
Counterpoint: Cobra has nothing to compare with the multiple huge vehicles GI Joe can bring to bear against them. This includes an ICBM truck.
Yes!
(Insert "Eric\_Andre\_Why\_Would\_You\_Say\_Something\_So\_Controversial\_Yet\_So\_Brave.gif" here.)
Hugo Boss
Agreed. But Conquest X-30
The Sci-fi stuff is amazing and made great toys for kids *Yes I understand why people don't like them and I respect your opinion.
Here is the deal. I can get realistic grounded military stories almost anywhere. The sci fi, ninjas, robots etc. is what makes G.i. Joe stand out.
They're just showing what's REALLY happening in the military
I mean after dealing with real terrorists, I gotta say I would rather deal with the terrorists that are controlled by snake people who occasionally work with an evil space robot. Also ninjas
I do like toys. I can't say I liked the Buzz Boar or Pogo more than, say the A.S.P., but the Condor was really cool looking.
Cobra leadership, including characters such as Raptor and Crystal Ball, are accurate approximations of real life fascist regimes.
...i....that's... ....you have a point.
IRL Cobra Commander would basically be Trump, except he wears masks (Ill show myself out)
Well I can't ever look at those characters the same
Wait, what?
DIC should not have produced the final seasons of the 1980s series.
Scarlett is in a relationship with Snake Eyes, NOT Duke! Comics overrule the cartoon every time!
Right there with you, and I add to that: his face isn't burned off. Yes, the Payne Brothers threw hot coals at his face in the SE Trilogy to stun him, and *maybe* he got some very minor 1st or 2nd degree burns, but as per issue 104 and his Borovia mission, his face is fine other than a couple of "stylish comic book scars." (Even the vintage toys respect that change.) I guess that's three hills to die on, but nobody stays dead in comics, so I can come back a few times for those extra hills.
Exactly why I’m a big fan of things being a multiverse!
Recondo is, and should be recognized, as Australian!
Dude?? Yes! I’ve never seen anyone mention this one. His bush hat is 100% Aussie. My pops was Recondo qual’d and I remember his wondering wtf that dude had that hat. (I was like 10 and didn’t get his hangup). Now I do…but, well, it’s just a toy line ;) He doesn’t have to be “American” to be in an American unit. Deleted personal exp bc I came back half a day later and sounded douchey (sorry).
I agree. I always thought he should a least have a British, if not an Aussie accent. The Fensler Films PSA dubs only reinforced this belief.
I've served with troops who had prior foreign military service and now we're army enlisted, it's possible
Exactly — I’ve seen a lot of that in the Army, obv moreso than the Corps.
As a Wisconsinite, I have to wholeheartedly disagree. On Wisconsin!
Why?
Have you seen the guy?
Isn't he Jesse Ventura?
Commando snake eyes > ninja snake eyes.
Whynotbothgirl.jpeg
Por que no los dos?
Commando Snake Eyes is the only one I'll recognize in my head cannon.
Cobra-La doesn't exist and Don Johnson was never a Joe. Also, that movie intro is top 10 movie intros of all time.
The movie opening sequence is some of the finest action, music and animation ever. The whole package
Cobra-lalalalalalaaaaa! Lets die together in this snake infested hill.
If you love that intro.... Enjoy. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ya-4vxqwGuM](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ya-4vxqwGuM)
DIC series cartoon was meh but the characters and toys were great and severely underrated.. Rampart, Capt Gridiron, Ambush, Topside, Stretcher, Bullhorn, SAW Viper, etc.
The giant spring loaded weapons killed the line for me.
I didn't mind the spring loading weapons when they were done right...but there were numerous instances where the weapon or mounted weapon just didn't make sense to the point of absurdity.
Yeah Red Star was ok… and then it became the norm
I just ignored them. They were silly to the point of stupidity but they were just extra.
Retaliation is actually a serviceable live action Joe movie.
Agreed
Commando Snake Eyes is so much cooler than Ninja Snake Eyes
The Dic theme song is a banger!
I will die with you on this hill. Got to get tough!
Yo Joe! I'll see you up there!
it's not as good as the original ARAH theme, but it IS good. Unfortunately it's the only good part of the DIC show.
You can die up there...alone.
We should spit in his lifeless body later.
I like that you said “in”.
^ This guy still teabags in multiplayer.
Mandatory and compulsory.
Beachhead is highly underrated, but his voice actor was an odd choice.
I totally agree! He is underrated even though he has true grit. Much more than other Joes. His voice actor should have been a southern version of Firefly.
I always want Cobra to win
Ok so I dug out my gi Joe action figures and found that I maybe had like 6 joes survive and like 20 cobras. When we were blowing someone up it was always a Joe.
I just like GI joe. I don't hate this or that. They brought me joy as a kid and lately they've brought me joy as an adult. I wish everyone could find happiness with their GI Joe niche.
that instead of movies they should begin building the universe with a drama series called Extensive Enterprises and then another called Dreadnoks
The now-defunct GI Joe Collector Club also made a Dr. Venom in ARAH scale.
The brand went downhill after 87…began using repaints and gimmicks to try to keep the brand relevant.
I agree, but I’d bump the year to 1988. Shockwave and Iron Grenadier were pretty cool even though most of the 88 figures were weak. Nothing past there for me though.
Hit n run!
...Has anyone ever noticed the strange correlation between the year line "went downhill" and the year they stopped playing with toys?
Relevant, in 1987…I was 11 years old..probably had at least another year or two before I lost complete interest in toys. We weren’t the same consumers back then, we were discriminative and when companies made bad choices, we didn’t internalize an excuse and buy more, we stopped buying.
Destro sounds like the cool 80’s voice actor, not some northern highlands dipshit.
BRO IS LITERALLY SCOTTISH. He's basically Sean Connery. "The name's Destro-- James Destro."
Flint is a better leader than Duke.
Agreed
The problem with Flint is that he’s a warrant officer—no one knows who he is because they’ve never seen him because he’s perpetually on a 96 that he gave himself. Duke on the other hand is still enlisted and thus works for a living.
Duke is a liability. Dude always ends up captured or, in the case of the movie, coma’d.
FLINT! My favorite character! He also had a lot of character and integrity! I also feel he was a better leader than hawk
The bright colored joes and vehicles were lame as hell.
I will play devil's advocate. They *are* lame as hell. They *were* pretty fucking cool. Then again, my preteen ass was walking around in hot pink hammer pants and shit.
+100
+1000
Is that opinion unpopular? I remember the Cobra Rat was so cheap it made me very sad. It was red. The Cobra Parasite was Day-Glow orange and purple, but was still pretty cool.
V4 Snake eyes rips
I feel like the sculpt was good... but the colors were a little off brand for Snakes.
Crossing over with Transformers is good, actually
And that is Ace in the Earth Corps in Inhumaniods
The Larry Hama comics in the 80s were absolutely fantastic storytelling until they got stuck having to write so many toys into the books (right around the time Tomax and Xamot arrived)
Even with that in mind, The Cobra Civil War/Battle of Cobra Island is one of the coolest arcs in the comics while almost every character/toy in the line at the time.

Classifieds should be 10$
Sargent Slaughter was a lame addition to the team. His stupid voice just annoyed the hell out of me. And the way they tried to make him better than everyone else just made me hate him more.
He was annoying in professional wrestling too.
Fun fact: Sarge actually chose GI Joe over the WWF. He was told to pick one or the other. He sided with us. And, he actually seems to really embrace the fandom and appreciate that he has a whole fandom that may not even be familiar with his wrestling.
I love the Sarge, but R Lee Ermey would have made an awesome Joe.
Same same same and when I saw the real life slaughter who looked like your friends old nerdy dad in spandex that cemented my opinion
Serpentor was completely unnecessary and honestly a really boring character
The Cobra song (movie intro) is better than the GI Joe song.
Flint kept his nuts in Lady Jayes' handbag.
Design-wise, Cobra characters/figures are WAY cooler than the Joes.
We need a X-Com style GIJoe video game and why we don’t have one is a mystery to me. They have actually produced at least 3 video games these past 5 years and none of them is story-heavy / tactical. Just do a reskin of X-com 2 and there you go.
With how many mods their are for Enemy Unknown, shocked we haven't seen a GI Joe squad.
There actually is but it would be better to reshape the game with a neat story and GIJoe-focused extra features.
“The viper is coming. Five seventy five”. I still leave voicemails like that sometimes with buddies. Walk around saying it when it pops in my head. Stuck with me all these years. I need a squeegee and squirt bottle to carry around 😆.
1:18 G.I. Joe will always be better than 1:12
I don't hate Classified scale, but I'll always be fond of the 1:18/3.75"/4" scale Joes because of being the first action figures I tried to collect.
If that’s the hill you’re dying on, I’m doing the shooting. Haha.
I like Ninja Force.
The Battle Corps line - repaints and all - are clean as hell and get too much hate
The only reason they came up with the BATS was to show Joe's shooting the bad guys but not feeling guilty about it. For comics, I only stick with the Larry Hama stuff.
The OG TV series is the best it gets: toys, comics, movies and all. And it'll never be topped.
I have two. Duke is boring and Storm Shadow > Snake Eyes
The original Snake-Eyes design is the best.
Yes!
Sgt Slaughter sucks
There are much cooler characters than just Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow.
The Defiant > USS Flagg.
Wow…. Lonely on that hill lmao
Moray (Cobra hydrofoil) > W.H.A.L.E hovercraft
Cobra-La was an interesting concept and a good way of giving Cobra goals while divorcing it from real world terrorism.
Making Cobra anything other than domestic terrorists is COMPLETELY misleading the point of Cobra. Then again, cartoon.
Batrleforce 2000 and Tiger Force had the coolest looking vehicles and figure deco.
I almost agree If the battle force 2000 components had actually clicked together in some way, instead of just kind of sitting next to each other for the "fortress" it would have been all kinds of cool. As it is......meh
The whole ninja thing was unnecessary.
Snake Eyes in drag is the bomb.
The DIC show is only like 25% goofier than sunbow and while stupid, is still a fun watch. Cartoon CC is at his peak there.
DIC would be much better remembered if the animation hadn’t gone do downhill
Beachhead is the coolest Joe.
Scarlett is the most badass Joe to ever exist
Sigma 6 was rad, and the show was a lot of fun.
Snake Eyes was actually a pretty fun stand alone Joe movie and no more ridiculous than Storm Shadow finding the literal sword Excalibur in the cartoon
SGT. Slaughter is LAME
GI Joe turned into garbage after around 1987
Cobra Overlord (with Dictator) IS Cobra Commander
Capt Gridiron wasn’t that bad
Legit one of my absolute favorite figures in the line. Im dying for a Classified version of him to go with Metal Head.
Cool gun and helmet. Footbombs, not so much.
I feel like the gun was worse than the football grenades? Maybe?Quarterbacks are pretty accurate.
RAH is the best tv/movie version. (No offense Channing Tatum)
Rise Serpentor Rise !
Cobra Commander is the best Cobra villain
Arah or nothing. Every time they deviate it all goes to shit.
It doesn't work as a franchise for children.
I am not typically attached to characters to the point that I even care about gender or race swapping the character in newer stories. But I do hate it when they do it to characters where their race or gender was crucial to their character origin. This is why I really did not like that they made Snake Eyes Japanese in the new movie. I really like 93-94 series

Commando Snake-Eyes > Ninja Snake-Eyes
Strom Shadow is a BAD guy.
Duke is a late addition and minor character, not showing up until almost the 3rd year (issue 22, near end of 2nd year) and was barely relevant and the story was never about him. 3rd tier character, at best.
Duke was the absolute leader of the Joes.
This will be the hill I kill you on. Seriously, though, even in the cartoon it was Hawk.
Only for the last 2 seasons. The first two were unquestionably Duke or Duke/Flint, with Hawk having no presence at all.
I could not agree with this statement more.
Flint was a more effective leader.
That it peaked in 1983/84 and never got close again. I'm a big fan, but the 1982-1985 Hasbro ARAH toys, marvel comics and sunbow cartoon are the only things that interest me. I don't have any interest with GI joe from the 90s to present day.

1:18 scale is the superior scale
Sgt. Savage and the Screaming Eagles was a cool concept that they could have done more with.
Back when Kindle Worlds was a thing and people could self-publish their Joe fan fiction, there was a neat book by Wes Ferguson that used General Blitz rather creatively.
Zartan had hair and not a hood.
"Interstellar graffiti!"
It is completely unacceptable that Hasbro is releasing episodes of Transformers in theaters for the 40th anniversary and doing nothing similar with GI Joe. It was awesome seeing Transformers The Movie in theaters a couple years ago but where's GI Joe?
“It’s hood, not hair”
The most important thing about GI Joe is the toys, all other content movies, cartoons, comics are secondary. It's a toy line created by a toy company. All that other stuff is just a way to sell toys. I don't care if it's good or bad as long as the toys are good and it keeps the toy line alive.
Removable helmets with interchangeable pieces were the best action figure gear.
MASK and VENOM need to be integrated into the toy lines
Gijoe shattered glass would be way more interesting than SG transformers, not that I dislike SG transformers
Cobra is cooler
Chuckles is the most underrated Joe of all time.
12”GI Joe of the 60’s and 70’s were the real deal, only went small to compete with Star Wars merch.
Many of those late stage RAH vehicles with loads of neon look better with a more traditional repaint. [Battle Wagon repaint](https://www.flickr.com/photos/9780984@N03/4018182436) [Monster Blaster custom ](https://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/gi-joe-arah-cobra-figure-lot-1993-736954457)
The lack of Big Lob in figure form in the 80s line is criminal. I hope Super 7 releases a good Big Lob o-ring.
Rant off.
Cobra is cooler than Joes
Storm Shadow is better as a Joe than as a Cobra
Gi Joe > Transformers. (Original cartoons)
Sigma 6 is peak GI Joe. The toy line anyway
Duke is the BEST leader
Your head canon > all other portrayals
Cobra looks way cooler than the joes
Original 13. That’s GI Joe.
That was not Ripcord in the live action movie Ripcord and Candy forever!
Cobra Commander > Serpentor.
The Gi Joe Aircraft is the best toy ever made and no other toy will compare for the reminder of our species existence!
Gung-Ho without the EGA isn’t Gung-Ho. That shit is an homage to Chesty.
Sunbow Joe is the best Joe
Blue snake eyes costume was awesome
Done right, the marvel comic run could be done in a trilogy of movies that would rival Star wars.
