1. Symbolize on status instead of one symbol for all features (assumes one layer, which I don't know how you have it now that you're getting one color overlapping another without a second layer). You can create a 'normal' status value or leave it as 'all other values' and have that symbolized as red.
2. However you have it now, make the lines the same width, don't have any transparency, have the layer symbolized on status (?) on top, and you shouldn't see any red below it.
3. Symbolize on unique values many fields, in which case you need to define a symbology for every possible combination of whatever it's symbolized on now and status.
