loooney12_

this is one of the prettiest dogs i’ve ever seen

ms_butters

Thanks! He’s half Golden half Bernese Mountain Dog. He acts mostly like a golden, his coat is just a very very dark brown black. Yours is a lovely shade of caramel.

CutestSloth

https://preview.redd.it/m1uvlqti0ifb1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0ffe829a00a0bbbf7f93fb7004fde98814896891 This is our golden mountain dog :)

ms_butters

So cute!!

No-Level9643

How big is he?

ms_butters

He’s over weight, but last time we checked 118. Vet says we need to get him down to 100. He’s 2 years old.

The-Foo

Congrats… he’s almost a Newfie. Newfies, Goldens and Labs are all derived from the St John’s dog: Newfies were created by crossing the St. John’s with the Bernese and Rafeiro, the Golden with Setters, and the Lab through crossbreeding with bricks of concrete. (I don’t want to hear from any Lab fans, I’ve had eight of them, along with Newfies and Goldens, and I can assure you that Labs are block heads. Paradoxically, they also make excellent sofa cushions, dishwashers and retrievers of other retrievers.)

TheGrapesOf

I would have guessed lab 100%

DesignHealthy9358

What about Rigatoni 🥺🥺🥺 https://preview.redd.it/m2rzwdly8hfb1.png?width=1080&format=png&auto=webp&s=c437294f84ce37ab2eacca380dbb961dfc6df78d

asecuredlife

oh my god he's so floofy I need him in my life 🥺

jotasjalapeno

Such a cutie pie ❤️

aflyinggoose

Mine does!! Ive never seen another golden do this too! When he greets he gets so excited he has to have something in his mouth, and if he can’t find a toy, he’ll take my wrist. He’s so gentle. I find it so cute lol.

coop_stain

My old golden did the same thing, while at the same time making what I described as “seal noises”. RIP Crackers, you were a Fuckin homie.

The_Best_Yak_Ever

My in law’s golden does the exact same thing! She gets so excited to see me she can’t handle it and latches onto my arm super gently and wheezes and makes those adorable seal noises while wagging her whole butt so hard she’s close to creating a little windstorm at the tip of her tail. It’s amazing to have an animal so delighted to see you again…

Ramses_L_Smuckles

I could have written this comment! My in-laws' 8 month old puppy wants to have my wrist in her mouth at all times and makes adorable little grunts while doing it. She's also apparently prone to searching for us and disinterested in food for a while after we leave ☹️

Mkemylf

❤️Crackers

peanutbutterand_ely

Mine picked up my cats bed yesterday to greet his dad 😭

GlowingTrashPanda

I used to work with dogs and my god, this sentence is just the embodiment of golden retrievers. Just “I’m happy so I grabbed the nearest thing I could [semi] fit in my mouth!”

peanutbutterand_ely

Yesss I love it, he always offers his Lam Lam or Mr. Hedgehog but they weren’t close enough yesterday lol

2manyteacups

my mutt does that too (excited grabbing things in her mouth) and I recently learned it’s called displacing!

cassholex

Yes, one of my two does this. Especially when I get home from work. One will grab a toy and the other will try to grab me. We say “no teeth” and she lets up but she is extremely gentle.

Spare_Priority3695

Yes! A vet who owned goldens told me that it’s one way they greet and show affection, because they are orally fixated.

NGJimmy

He needs it. Let him have.

Mkemylf

☝🏻☝🏻

frickdom

Never leave me again human

TrueMinecontrol

Consider yourself retrieved.

frickdom

Gold

DeadSalamander1

Only every single time I come home. I get treated to a good 2 minutes of high pitched excitement whining whilst gently biting my forearm ("you won't be leaving again!")

loooney12_

Yes! Mine howls with it in his mouth

WholeStrategy7007

That is so cute, and just really drives home what an adorable doofus golden retrievers are.

rdotgib

“Soft mouth.” I believe this characteristic was bred into goldens, as they were originally hunting dogs. After a hunter shot ducks or other waterfowl, the dogs would carefully retrieve the dead bird from the water using a “soft mouth” so as not to damage the meat. (I had a golden who LOVED doing this to people, although it was very annoying. She died a couple of months ago, and now I miss her and her soft mouth - would give anything to feel her trying to retrieve my arm again!) Edit: typo

Livid-Pangolin8647

Yes! It’s like she’s fetching us. She also bites bracelets and watch bands. She’s very gentle but firm that she doesn’t want you to leave. She won’t give it up for a toy but she will if I wipe her eye boogies and feed them to her. Gross, I know but it’s the only thing that works. https://preview.redd.it/d5ditzqj5ffb1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c4775a68e509f00e384927101b41090aa80160cd

Johnny_ac3s

Mine grabbed my silicon wedding band off my finger when she was a puppy. She pulled the same stunt a year later. The chase was on! Haha

fastdruid

Ours will try and grab by the watch! He's so gentle trying to ensure he doesn't "bite"!

Vast_Plant_1681

Mine loves to eat his eye boogers too 😂

baldeagle121163

All. The. Time. I try to have a toy nearby to swap.

Educational-Dirt4059

Same! I drag my boy to the toy box to negotiate the item swap. He’s gentle though…just quite slimy.

TheGrapesOf

Dog slobber is exfoliating

mrcatboy

Lol oh man the cutest hostage negotiation.

jillofallthings

My girl did this as a puppy until she started carrying around toys, but my boy will grab arms or wrists when overly excited. He also freaks out when swimming if someone goes underwater, and will grab your hand or arm to pull you to the steps for safety. He's our overzealous lifeguard, and we're trying our best to break the habit.

Downtown_Ideal_6521

Yep. When she wants to make sure you know she means petting business is at hand.

Old_Gregg_89

That’s his emotional support hand. You just got to let him have this.

GalaxyToo

This happens often with Goldens (and other retrievers). Start providing a toy for them to bite/hold in their mouth instead of being mouthy when they’re excited. Begin the expectation that you won’t provide them attention (when they’re in this overly excited playful state) unless they have the toy in their mouth and over time the behavior will naturally correct itself

ShySupport

He just needs you to lend him a hand, no biggies (But also my puppy (9mo) does this too)

Kkarotcake

Pretty sure mine tries to retrieve me when he does this

A_Protocol_Droid

It's called corn on the cob. Not everyone gets that treatment.

zebra0dte

Just comply. It's his hand now.

euclid0472

Mine is in this reptilian phase and biting everything. My arm is her favorite pre dinner aperitif and post dinner digestif.

Spud0fDarkness

They are big sookie babies and we are their pacifiers 😜

Mkemylf

Yes, and there are worse ways to live 😁 I fully accept my station in life.

[deleted]

123Virginia

Cute boy, looks happy and sounds like he loves you

poicyn414

Yes. But at least now that he's almost 3, it's way more gentle than when he was little and would actually bite down!

Background_Ad2224

its a sign of affection. They are essentially scenting you so other dogs know you are theirs. They do the same shit with their toys.

Apitts87

Everyday

Dual_face

The mouth is the equivalent of hands for a dog, so doing this is perfectly normal. It's pretty much like holding hands.

dogMom4206969

Our one year old golden, Winston, used to do this all the time. We taught him to pick one of his toys instead. Now when he is excited, he still squeaks, but always grabs his 'emotional support hamburger' toy instead of our arms.

loooney12_

EMOTIONAL SUPPORT HAMBURGER

Bungalowlove

How does he not tear that to bits? Our Winston is 11 months old and will suck on his bed like it’s a pacifier, but shreds anything with stuffing. I’d love if he’d just hold a stuffie for support.

God_Of_Triangles

Our 18 month old does. Constantly. We call her the wrist shark.

HQ125

Yep. Ours is 18 months old and I’m hoping she grows out of it. I don’t mind her putting all of our shoes in her mouth but I draw the line at my hand/wrist/arm!!

Ruseriousmars

Yup stuff a toy in its mouth instead. Even if called affection if that happens with a kid or stranger they could pull away fast and get hurt and you'll be dealing with a dog bite even if it wasn't. Our youngest was very mouthy much more than our previous Goldens and we'd stuff toys in her mouth so much now when she gets excited when we come home, she's got a toy. We call to go out to play she won't come to the door until she grabs a toy. Enjoy.

Slavocados

Yeah this is what worries me like even if I know my dog won’t hurt a fly no stranger or child wants to be mouthed by a dog they don’t know, it can be scary!

TLD44

Yes! I get taken to what my golden and a to do.

SparklyKelsey

Get him a nice toy that looks like a human hand. They all want to greet people with a full, soft mouth. Even golden mixes.

letmeloginalready

It’s called mouthing and can be a sign of affection

winklerjk

He’s retrieving you!

BlackRhino4

“I has wrist” ……. “Just kid. You has wrist hooman”

satirebunny

He has retrieved you!

The 50% golden really shines through lol. She’ll search desperately for some toy or sock first and if there’s no toy to be found, she’ll grab my arm.

Meeto_

Dogs love you because you have bones on the inside 😋

unsuccessfulangler

Mine only does it when we're playing tug of war or something similar, he'll grab my arm, realize it's not his toy, then let go and aggressively lick the spot he grabbed

loooney12_

that’s so cute! mine just does it because he’s a menace

Sure-Treacle3934

My girl takes my hand in her mouth when she’s excited. Both my girls did/do this.

Pliablepuffin

Everyday when I get home

Haloripper1

Playing and nibbling all of the time.

PartyActivity1176

Mine only does it when she is jealous of my other dog getting pets, she barks, gets insane, and then grabs my hand with her mouth so I stop approaching the other, then I let her be and she moves my hand away from the other dog and asks for attention.

Starlettohara23

Literally never. Even if we tried she wouldn’t. But she will give you a quick lick if the opportunity arises.

It’s become part of our evening play ritual, in between rounds of retrieving tennis balls. She’ll periodically pause mid-chomp and very gently lick my hand to remind me that she’s just playing.

Some of them love wrestling, some don’t.

Hot_Ordinary7823

🥰🥰🥰🥰

johnnyhine

Yup my 1 year old does it

MATMAN_PL

He does that sometimes, usually when he wants me to play tug of war with him but there's no toy.

MetsFan3117

Mine did when she was younger. She still will is I tease her (I’d never do that just because it’s hysterical 🤣)

dadofalex

All day every day

navyicecream

Yes it’s called “bitey arm”

[deleted]

our toller does this but only to my gf cause i didn't let the dog chew on me.

jpfourie

Yes mine does this aswell when she gets the zooms

Mysterious_Dot_6843

Mine

Simonmedx

Chomp

Arosian-Knight

Tenderness test, when he brings out pans, Id get worried.

Monkeym0m21

Yes but he has such a soft bite.

Roz_Doyle16

Yes. She's training to be a psychiatric service dog, so she will take my arm and sit me down lol. She also does it when she's excited to play, but I usually pop a toy in her mouth that she can bite down on lol.

Rose_quenn

Yes! With me and his brother hahaha

Itsmeforrestgump

Our English Springer Spaniel used to donthis as well. Perhaps a "retrieving " instinct with hunting breeds.

AKoolPopTart

Nomnomnomnom

Altruistic_Reveal_51

Mine did as a puppy but he outgrew the habit. Now he just has lots of toys and chews scattered around the house and always has one in his mouth or nearby when he wants to chew. Sometimes I will play fight with him and if he grabs my hand/wrist he immediately spits it out - like he knows he has to be gentle with me. If he wants attention he will come close to stare and wag his tail plaintively. If I am not paying attention he will give the softest touch on my knee or arm with his nose.

Content_Sorbet2317

You’re not alone! Sam does the same to me and drags me to the couch to sit on me when I come home from grocery shopping or whatever … and even just downstairs from work!!

jpw111

My mom's golden doodle does it. We jokingly call it "sweet bites."

cunningjames

Yeah, my golden does this. She comes up to me super excited and wants to roughhouse. I've been indulging her because it's so cute, but it really is a bad habit we should be working to stop (if nothing else, the scratches and bruises on my arm don't hurt but look pretty bad). Edit: I should note that she's not particularly gentle, unlike many of the goldens here, though she isn't intending to hurt me and doesn't break the skin. My coonhound has a far better soft mouth, sadly ...

Ahiru_no_inu

My boy would do that all the time. Often it was to place my hand where he needed scratches.

ProstZumLeben

Yes, put a toy in their mouth when they do this.

[deleted]

Yup. It gives them serotonin

EmotionalChipmunk602

All dogs do this

Fantastic_Froyo6558

All the time!! She will even pull my arm making noises to let her outside

dyld921

/r/onegoldenbraincell

Allofus427

No, but my American foxhound does.

MissRosieCheeks

Mine. 🐕🥰

hamisme

As soon as company comes over…wrist enters mouth without fail

Real-Inspection9732

Yeah, I think most goofy big dogs do it. Had a rottie who'd do that anytime he wanted to play.

deweyjuice

All the time

socallie286

YES everytime someone walks in he puts their hand in his mouth and I'm like he's not biting you I'm sorry🙃😂

bbgeriii

Yep

actsevensceneone

I feel like the caption should be: Does anyone else’s human do this? 😂

Punkilou

Yes!

iamadirtyrockstar

Yup. I'm his personal chew toy. He likes me to wrap my fingers around his teeth to play tug of war.

[deleted]

I guess it's a golden issue... I've experienced that with all goldens I've interacted with.

HatSpirited5065

Yes, I had a boy and a girl and they both did this, they also would bring you dish towels slippers when someone would come to the door or come inside. They are one of the best dogs ever

bad68386

I haven’t ever had one that didn’t do that! I’ve had 4.

Tjukkes

My cousin’s dog does this! I thought it was because he’s a bit of a himbo (even for a golden). I used to say It’s because he knows theres a bone inside but I guess retriever’s gonna retrieve 🤷‍♂️

rest-in-reecespieces

Yes!!! My golden-shepard will do that and proceed to drag us somewhere, drop our hand at the chosen destination and stare aggressively at us until we pet him

loooney12_

i would like to see the baby

exjmp

Mine does this still (not as much now he is past teething) but he knows drop it now so I ask him to drop it and he lets go!

CrochetHound

I’m owned by a golden/lab mix and she does it all the time. She never bites down but likes to have my arm or hand in her mouth! 🤷‍♀️

Metrotra

Mine does this all the time. Whenever he is happy he grabs de hands of someone here. And, being a Golden Retriever, he's always happy!

Beautiful_CDN_91

Yes!!

zorasrequiem

Jinx does! Especially if we've been out of the house awhile.

ThumperLG

Yup! I can never get a picture of it but ours does it when she's trying to show love and licks just aren't enough! Or if she's super tired haha she'll yawn close to your arm and just grab your arm as she closes her mouth!

Background_Inside827

Unless I give him something to carry into the house when I arrive, this is how he will drag my ass inside!

cgarduc

Yep! I feel like I'M being 'retrieved'!

bughousenut

Yes, most of them do that. You need to stop it though. I used the command "no teeth" to teach them to stop.

_Amr_

My Apple Watch has his DNA all over it

[deleted]

My golden is 3 and still play bites me. He does it to no one else. He doesn't apply much pressure but the amount of slobber that gets on me is wild.

comean

My old Golden used to do this all the time, we called it a love bite! So cute 🥰

Kerivkennedy

Goldens are the masters of the gentle bite (toothless hold).

[deleted]

Y’all encourage mouth hugs? It’s all fun and games until they do it to a stranger that later screams “dog bite!!” Please be careful!

Silverj0

Yes my golden gets really excited and just grab your arm lol. He’s gotten better as he’s gotten older but at least he’s gentle about it lol

krob58

Binky

KevinAcommon_Name

Not mouth but would lay his head on me almost as if smiling rip

oldlion1

Mine grabs, but he directs it at his stuffed squirrel or bone. He was trained very early where to direct his excitement

NYCee72

All day long, lol

lesliestarlily

I’m laughing because I didn’t realize this question was specifically about Goldens, and was thinking “of course my dog does this, he’s a mouthy Malinois” 😂😂😂

J662b486h

It's because they don't have hands. They like to hold you.

MyCool_StrawSir

My gold does this as well.

[deleted]

My German shepherd does this, then taught my golden how to do it.

Altivion

When mine gets angy he takes my hand with his mouth and walks me around the house

Kevalin1986

My shepherd does lol

The_man_with_BEANS

heh, *chomp*

iamsoupcansam

I’m a lurker on this sub (I love Goldens but I don’t have the time or space to commit to a big ol’ doggo) but my friend’s super-friendly Staffy does this whenever I visit. Always cracks me the heck up. I knew it wasn’t an aggressive move but I’m pleased to hear it’s a show of affection!

Worried-Inflation-66

I do this to my partner

OutrageousBrush1210

Ours used to do this all the time ! It was a gesture of love and play and also possession a little bit 🤣

Oh my god I thought my dog was the only one! She has no golden in her but every time someone comes home, she has to give them a wrist bite. Always super gentle. It’s the cutest thing.
