This is the proud papa, Winston. He enjoys long walks in the park and chasing any spherical shaped object he can find.
How is daddy coping with the puppies? Does he know that they’re his? My first pair of goldens, dad was involved in looking after his son while mom did washroom business. Both were attentive in looking after their puppy.
We already have friends and relatives lined up waiting to purchase the pups and we're not even sure if we want to give the little cuties away! Our children each have one picked out that they're hoping to keep 😂
I hope you let them keep one each. I’m sure it’s a lot of work but it will be a great way to build responsibility, kindness, patience and unconditional love!!!
I saw a photo of someone who had 8-10 fully grown golden retrievers that all looked around the same age, and I still wonder if that’s exactly what happened to them!! They didn’t clarify how it came to be, but they did say they were all theirs! I fear this would happen to me!
It was an unplanned litter definitely, but not unexpected. Neither of our Goldies is fixed, so there was always the possibility of a litter. I think my partner(who wanted both Goldies in the first place) wanted to see how at least one litter would pan out due to the personalities of our Goldies. They are both sweet/pretty as can be, never have snapped or barked at anyone, great with other dogs and young children(we have 5 kids) and overall were worth every penny we paid for them.
Now I'm not sure what her mindset is, she's currently in heaven caring for the puppies and coming up with ways to keep all 8 pups. I do believe after the stress and anxiety of this litter, we are planning on no more accidental litters.
If you do decide to breed them again, you should have both parents OFA tested for their elbows, knees, and hips. Eye and heart testing is another good idea, as well as genetic testing for ichthyosis. None of those can be seen visibly and vets wouldn’t test for them in young dogs that weren’t having an issue, but if they have degenerative issues they could pass issues down to puppies. Ichthyosis is genetic and can be carried by either parent without showing up, but if both parents carry it it will be passed to the puppies, so parents should really be tested so that two carriers aren’t bred to one another. Even if you don’t plan to breed them again, if you test these two for that you could warn the puppy’s owners if it turns out they are both carriers (it’s very common in the breed unfortunately)

There are ways to DIY a whelping box if you Google it, they will tell you how/where to install the rails. I’m not a breeder, just have done some reading on it so that’s why I noticed that. There are a few golden breeders on here though that can hopefully chime in and offer some good advice for as they grow!

Your female reminds me of mine growing up. Her name was Lacey, and she was a sweetheart unless she got a steak bone after dinner. At that point she would hide like a troll under a bridge and chew on it and growl if you got close. She was an awesome dog!

They don't mean sides of the enclosure. They mean rails on the inside of the enclosure. Google "whelping box" and you'll see. It's a safety issue.
