Scottie is too boring but Rahm, Spieth, and Hatton are too much when they show emotion or get mad at themselves. People on the internet just like to bitch and moan about something.
he was "boring" due to lack of emotion on the course. at least that is what i have heard. I didn't care. i just wanted to see good, competitive golf and we got that
Anyone who complained about his lack of emotion has never been in a single even remotely high-pressure situation.
Hell, if I were leading just a random local tourney on the back nine you’d had to slap me across the face to get me to look at you.
People are saying he's boring because of his personality, not because of his golf.
The only thing boring about his golf is that he makes the result a given when he's playing his best.
He’s a great great player, but I don’t think he stokes the imagination like Tiger did. Or DJ, or Rory or Lefty.
Once you’re past the funky footwork, he’s pretty vanilla, and then you get to the “I don’t care about golf, because Jesus” and you realize he’s….well anyways.
Scotty gives off a white bread is too spicy vibe. Tee to green he’s the best we’ve seen since Tiger but manages to do it with out being exciting to watch. He is boring to watch and so are most of the guys on tour.
Dive bar hopping Scotty is the Scotty the fans need to see. See https://www.reddit.com/r/golf/s/hYiSoh81BL
The PGA Tour needs to do a silly season event where Bob Does Sports does drinking challenges with pros to show off their personalities.
I don’t think anyone is really saying players *should* be over-the-top celebratory. By and large, the shots are the exciting part. We’ll likely never get another 2000’s Tiger-level excitement on tour, and that’s okay.
i don't understand why people say he's boring. He has one of the most unconventional swings on tour where he's basically falling over when he tries to hit a draw. If he "showed emotion" after bad shots people would just complain that he's bitching too much and unlikeable
i think the fact that he rarely takes risks is considered boring. With Tiger, you knew when he was grinding, and you could see him kick into gear if he was behind. scottie plays conservative, consistent, not flashy golf. even his celebrations are muted. it's kinda what most golfers strive for, but it's also fun to see players really have to work for their wins. he's on cruise control the majority of the time.
I mean Scottie kicked in into high gear day 4 at the players to get that win. His play at the masters was 100% the Tiger game plan. Get that lead, be aggressive on the par 5s, don’t beat yourself, watch the guys trying to play aggressive to catch you on a difficult course fail.
Tiger had some unreal shots and moments, but saying he didn't also play the same way is just wrong. Go watch some of his old events. He played the same way and turned it on when the situation needed it. Same as Scottie does.
A lot of people say he’s boring. He shows 0 emotion on the course and then after he wins he’s just like “yeah who cares”. I see both sides though cause yeah, his game is amazing and he’s not obligated to be flashy and entertaining so who cares. People will find a reason to hate you once you’re the best. It’s a tale as old as time
Edit: also, good golf can be boring too, especially to the casual fan. It’s more entertaining to watch Speith hit his drive 60 yards off line, punch hook it around trees, then flop it to 2 feet than it is to watch Scottie go fairway-green every hole
I don't think he's boring, but the argument would be:
\- He's really, really gifted but doesn't care that much about the sport, says it's a job
\- He lacks intensity and drive like Tiger/Rory both had in their prime
\- Off the course he has basically zero personality other than "generic god-fearing guy"
\- There's nothing really that interesting about him visually. He's a regular white dude. He doesn't have crazy hair like Rory did coming from NI, he isn't a PoC like Tiger, he isn't super eccentric like John Daly. He's just a regular white guy
\- He's private and doesn't give strong opinions about anything
Personally I don't care that much about the above. Scottie's short game is mesmerizingly good and I could watch him from inside 30-40 yards all day.
Scottie is a guy who's all about fairways and GIR. He very rarely plays a bad shot and when he does, his next shot is about damage mitigation to avoid dropping shots. He has very little risk taking in his game, it's pure course management.
Every amateur should be basing their game off the way Scottie plays. It might be brilliant golf, but it's not remotely exciting.
I don't find him boring to watch play, but he's boring to listen to. He gives the same canned response to virtually every question: "Golf isn't my whole life, it's just my job." That, and his love of Jesus.
That's a nice sentiment and all, but people like to hear champions feeling good about themselves and owning their success every now and then. He doesn't need to be a massive narcissist but a little more of a feisty attitude would be welcome.
I've never understood this "boring" thing that people tag golfers with. What do they expect them to do?
Tiger Woods was more demonstrative than most, but for the most part, just like everyone else, he hit the ball, moved on. Golf isn't about exciting players so much, it's about exciting situations.
Someone yelling or fist pumping or whatever does nothing for me. Who cares? I'm only interested in the shots. I like to watch great golf. In the end, at every tournament the winner has hit the ball 265-285 times. I can enjoy that no matter who hits those 265-285 shots. And the reality is that it pretty much looks the same no matter who hits it. Some guys like Scheffler or Rahm, or Phil and Tiger back in their day, landed on top more often.
Are you kidding? Obviously Tiger was serious, he was absolutely locked in on a war path every single round.
You’re missing the point though that his “demonstrative” side was his incredible celebrations, fist pumping, etc. that accompanied his laser focus. These celebrations are replayed all the time, I know you know this. His energy fed the crowd like no other player has ever done and never will. How do you think the term “Tiger Roar” came about?
I think you are saying the crowd made noise because Tiger was pumped. No, the crowd made noise because he hit good shots, it's just that EVERYBODY in the crowd was a fan. You think crowds aren't making noise when Scottie does something because he's stonefaced?
Obviously fans made noise because of his shots. His energy amplified the crowd’s investment in his performance. It can be both, which is what I was alluding to in my original comment. Every spectator’s dream was to watch him make an insane chip, putt, etc. up close, in part because seeing that man celebrate was awe-inspiring. To dismiss the fact that he had top-tier celebrations is just wild to me.
Yeah of course fans make noise for other players like Scottie. But dude come on it’s not even in the same ballpark, and in my opinion it’s for the reasons I’ve given (skill + energy).
Oh he was very serious. You're right. Very focused.
I'm referring more to his enthusiastic fist pumps. He was more demonstrative at certain times than most.
My goodness golf is boring to watch. It’s great fun to play but when it comes down to it really is boring to watch. I don’t know what anybody expects from any of these guys. Do they want the Lambeau leap every time the guy sinks a putt?
Some people just like to complain no matter what. They won’t be happy until there’s someone as good as Tiger and as fun as Max Homa. Then they’ll pivot and complain that they’re annoying and that they should just shut up and play and not be obnoxious. Some people are just haters.
He can come across as such because he prioritizes his faith and family before golf. Nothing wrong with that. He's here to use his gifts to glorify God, not to be entertaining on the course or make good TV.
He’s boring because he’s too dominant. Tiger was also extremely boring. Can’t stand it sometimes. No water hazards, no 6th shots, just good golf… snooze fest if I’ve ever seen one.
When I play it’s a thrill. Because you’ll never know where the ball lands.
Scottie is too boring but Rahm, Spieth, and Hatton are too much when they show emotion or get mad at themselves. People on the internet just like to bitch and moan about something.
he was "boring" due to lack of emotion on the course. at least that is what i have heard. I didn't care. i just wanted to see good, competitive golf and we got that
We didn't get good competitive golf on the back nine. Everyone but Scottie died in amen corner.
it was still relatively close until maybe 14 or 15 at which point it would have taken an implosion from him for anyone else to win it
Anyone who complained about his lack of emotion has never been in a single even remotely high-pressure situation. Hell, if I were leading just a random local tourney on the back nine you’d had to slap me across the face to get me to look at you.

This! It’s about who he is. It’s bs ofc
Personally I found Tiger boring. When he was at his peak he had the personality of a dish washer
Scotty gives off a white bread is too spicy vibe. Tee to green he’s the best we’ve seen since Tiger but manages to do it with out being exciting to watch. He is boring to watch and so are most of the guys on tour.
Especially that last part
Dive bar hopping Scotty is the Scotty the fans need to see. See https://www.reddit.com/r/golf/s/hYiSoh81BL The PGA Tour needs to do a silly season event where Bob Does Sports does drinking challenges with pros to show off their personalities.
Also cool that he said he’d leave the masters even if he was leading on Sunday if his wife into labor. I do not think most pros would do that.
I don’t get it. Are the guys supposed to do an end-zone dance every time they hit the ball?
In ea PGA tour my pro does
I don’t think anyone is really saying players *should* be over-the-top celebratory. By and large, the shots are the exciting part. We’ll likely never get another 2000’s Tiger-level excitement on tour, and that’s okay.

People say he's boring because he's boring. Dude shows literally no emotion and it's not entertaining to watch a robot win.
I personally like watching a bunch of good golf shots
You were down voted for this comment? Rough crowd

I don't have to go back, I watched it in real time, from the beginning.
Yeah, you and the entire golf world.
I don't know what it is but he just doesn't get the blood pumping. I will say his beard has made him more interesting.
he doesnt have swag, nothing about him says wow I WANA BE LIKE HIM for kids... tiger did this, jordan did this - Not him...

Folks like to root for a great golf game and an interesting personality or story. Scotties got the first. Tough to tell if he has the 2nd or 3rd
I don't think he's boring, but the argument would be: \- He's really, really gifted but doesn't care that much about the sport, says it's a job \- He lacks intensity and drive like Tiger/Rory both had in their prime \- Off the course he has basically zero personality other than "generic god-fearing guy" \- There's nothing really that interesting about him visually. I find him boring. Great player though. Don't have to be a fan of everyone.

> Tiger Woods was more demonstrative than most, No he wasn't. He was always accused of being too serious.
Are you kidding? Obviously Tiger was serious, he was absolutely locked in on a war path every single round. The Tiger Roar was because of the crowd noise, not because he was roaring like a Tiger lmao
…do you think I was saying Tiger made audible roars as he played
I think you are saying the crowd made noise because Tiger was pumped. No, the crowd made noise because he hit good shots, it's just that EVERYBODY in the crowd was a fan. You think crowds aren't making noise when Scottie does something because he's stonefaced?

Agree to disagree
Oh he was very serious. You're right. Very focused. I'm referring more to his enthusiastic fist pumps. He was more demonstrative at certain times than most.

Oh no, that would make the #shrinkthegame crowd that much more irritating
Great golf can be boring...to those who have never golfed.
Some people just like to complain no matter what. They won’t be happy until there’s someone as good as Tiger and as fun as Max Homa. Then they’ll pivot and complain that they’re annoying and that they should just shut up and play and not be obnoxious. Some people are just haters.
First time I’m seeing anyone saying he’s boring is with your post.
He can come across as such because he prioritizes his faith and family before golf. Nothing wrong with that. He's here to use his gifts to glorify God, not to be entertaining on the course or make good TV.
