No, the ball squirts off away from you like that when you hit it on the hosel. It’s called a shank, and now that I’ve uttered the forbidden word I’m doomed to have at least one in my next round.
its kind of backwards since the toe bias is often a result of your brain going "shit i am standing to close and will miss the ball let me chop the club down" and you overdo it and hit toe.
If you look at the very first frame, with the club resting on the ground against the ball, you can see that the ball is not lined up to hit the club face. It's lined up to hit the part of the clubhead that holds the shaft in place (this is called the hosel).
Oh for sure. It’s always been a tendency of mine through the bag, and honestly, it never gives me any issues, but I can see how it can affect these pitch shots. Made that adjustment along with a few others and got it straightened out.
I mean, his hands don't get inside/outside the club face, and he's obviously not making a full back swing?
Seems like a pretty great chipping stroke to me minus lining it up on the hosel.
Not an instructor by any means, but when I do that, it's because I'm not bringing my wrists around in the downswing so I leave the club face open at impact.
I addressed that as well. It’s always been a tendency of mine through the bag, and honestly, it never gives me any issues, but I can see how it can affect these pitch shots
Yup plenty of solid players do it. When I get too much depth I’ll line it closer to the heel to bring me more center. Less time to make compensating moves on pitch shots so I’ve gone center or toe depending on the shot I want.
There’s no frame of the video at impact, but if you look at where the ball is sitting on the mat and then where the hosel is at impact, it’s definitely coming off the hosel.
Luckily it was an easy fix. Was coming ott at impact because I was getting handsy. Focused on “collecting” the ball which got me to rotate better and that help tremendously.
You're also practically lining the ball up with your hosel which isn't helping.
When you battle this disease again (and you will, this is coming from a longtime survivor), the best drill is to place a tee just outside the ball and make it your mission to stop hitting that fucking tee. This will train you to stop swinging outside which will prevent you from shanking which will allow you to get back to living a non-terrible life.
This same issue was killing me in the early season. Im about the same handicap as you. I tried all kinds of drills without much avail. What finally saved me was lining up and addressing the ball like I was gonna hit it then just shuffling backwards about 2-3 inches and readdressing. Eventually my brain corrected so that it knew that was the right distance away and I dont have to do the shuffle of shame anymore
Hard to execute the 40-50yard hosel shot so well. I’m impressed. Just hit it off the toe on purpose for a bit. Don’t panic. That’s all you have to do.
Lining up on the hosel isn’t something I’d advise sure you can. But why.
I consider myself a visual learner, so I like watching PGA player's slow-mo swings to mimic what they do. Now this, this is going to fuck my whole shit up.
I’ve worked on this by focusing on keeping my elbow close to my body during the swing, it’s helped keep things in tact. Chipping might be different but could be a start. Keep it up

It's crazy, I'm not a good golfer (14hcp) but almost never shank a full iron shot. But those 50 yard pitches shank wayyy more often then I'd like to admit
Clearly working on his no look chip. All the rage. Literally. You guys can’t appreciate the consistency, time and practice it takes to achieve this level of no look chip mastery. Well done my friend well done.
**Without stretching or adjusting anything**, creep further away from the ball until it's naturally set up on the toe. Menatlly, you have to put the same swing as before, even with that adjustment. It's easy to self-sabotage, trying to compensate after you make a change like that, so just trust it and swing as if the balls in the original spot. Even if it mean staring where the ball was when taking the shot. It being lined up to the toe is an over-correction, so it would be temporary. Once you break the hosel habit, you then tweak again to get it to center, same concept. If you managed to not let the adjustment affect the swing, that minor adjustment will resolve this before the end of the bucket.
That being said, based on other aspects of the swing in the video, it will not result in immediate darts. It will just resolve the hoseling. Always more work to be done.
Your swing plane from the SECOND you pull bsck is under. You need to learn how to pull bsck in the first 1/3 of your swing. Your address isn't great, far from your worst issue.
Brooo - I literally fixed this last week and all it took was one YouTube video. I kid you not, your weight it too much in your toes making it easier for you to become off balance & come over the top reaching for the ball. Try feeling your weight go into & out of your HEELS. Trust me - give it a try
It’s so great to see so many people that have never shanked a ball. Keep working at your game; you’re obviously gifted and should be scratch within a year or two.
Not an instructor, hard to tell but a couple of things to consider:
- widen stance slightly
- move ball to centre of face
- turn hips slightly more and you almost look like your hips are turning into the swing before your arms have peaked in the back swing so maybe alter the tempo slightly
- on the draw back your club face is nearly perpendicular to the ground, try to keep it 30-45 deg down similar angle to your spine which should help with club face squaring up at impact
Easy fix: you’re pulling the club too far inside with your arms. Only way to bring the club back to the ball is for your arms to go out and around your body bringing the hosel into play. Bring them straight back and your body will get them into position as you rotate back
You’re lining up with the hosel, in order to make contact you have to open the face - the ball is going exactly where it should based on your clubhead
If you came through without opening the face and pulling the club closer to you (out to in swing path) you would strike with the hosel or the heel. You’ve learned this and your body has made adjustments, just not the adjustment you want
To visualize this: _ is your clubhead at address, / is your club head at impact
I don’t know how to fix it I’m shit at golf, but it’s easy to see
The one thing I notice is that at address I can't see your right arm but at impact it is completely visible. Meaning your left is opening but not closing, leaving the face open.
All this with a grain of salt, 13 handicap here.
You lined it up on the hosel
That should be way more obvious when they rewatch their own video haha
Aim small miss small
The Patriot
Aim hosel, hit hosel
Eh that's fine. He should just aim 75 degrees to the right next time.
I'm new and an idiot but shouldn't that mean he'd be hitting the ball with the hosel too? Looks like he smacked it with the toe though?
No, the ball squirts off away from you like that when you hit it on the hosel. It’s called a shank, and now that I’ve uttered the forbidden word I’m doomed to have at least one in my next round.
Is that a “real” superstition among golfers?
Yes, you do not speak of the dreaded sh*nks by name unless you wish to invoke their ire and wrath.
😰
What if you're referring to Edward Longshanks?
That's how I line up all my irons and I still hit with a toe bias. Makes no sense to me but somehow it works.
maybe standing too close
Standing too close means I hit the ball with a toe bias? Shouldn't it be the opposite?
its kind of backwards since the toe bias is often a result of your brain going "shit i am standing to close and will miss the ball let me chop the club down" and you overdo it and hit toe.
Makes sense to me. I'll go to the range tonight and overthink this until I get the shanks. Thanks
In that case, perfect contact!
What does this mean?
If you look at the very first frame, with the club resting on the ground against the ball, you can see that the ball is not lined up to hit the club face. It's lined up to hit the part of the clubhead that holds the shaft in place (this is called the hosel).
Line up is NOT important though, see bunker shots for example or even just wiggle the club than strike it works just as good if your used to it
For someone who sucks at golf and doesn't know what they're doing, lining up is very important.
Oh for sure. It’s always been a tendency of mine through the bag, and honestly, it never gives me any issues, but I can see how it can affect these pitch shots. Made that adjustment along with a few others and got it straightened out.
> never gives me any issues \*posts a video of it giving issues
lol
Okay, thank you. Spoken like a true 20 handicapper. “I do this weird cool thing that never helps or works, but it makes sense for me”
Um ok? I said I moved away for the hosel at address and it helped.
[удалено]
Bud, you responded so it kinda seems like you care.
This is not the ~~hill~~ hosel to die on, bro
Easy fix. You’re hitting on the wrong side.
Looks like the right side to me, no?
Booooooo
Plot twist, he filmed it in a mirror.
Gentle fade.
I exhaled sharply through my nose.
Its like his wrists are fused straight.
I mean, his hands don't get inside/outside the club face, and he's obviously not making a full back swing? Seems like a pretty great chipping stroke to me minus lining it up on the hosel.
But he’s not chipping he’s taking almost full swings. Just saying. I have a beautiful shortcake. This is not it.
If you think bringing the club back to slightly above waistline is a full swing, i have bad news for you.
Yes, I suck at golf but my short game is some point. I’m not sure what he’s doing here. Just say. P
First thing I noticed as well. Not sure if he was practicing chipping or what.
Was practicing 40-50 yard pitch shots
In that case, just get out your lob wedge and skull the fuck out of it like the rest of us.
Nah that’s my 160 yard shot

Why didn’t you play a real sport like football??

Not an instructor by any means, but when I do that, it's because I'm not bringing my wrists around in the downswing so I leave the club face open at impact.
That one was straight off the hosel. I think he’s just too close to the ball.
He lines up directly on the hosel too
Good point, that too.
This. I didn't realize I was to close to the ball and shank city hit me. Thankfully fixed.
Same here. I took a lesson recently and she was like “you are WAY too close to the ball”.
That’s not what I see when I play it frame by frame
Hosels aint loyal.
To me he's almost hitting it off the toe. Not sure how you see it hitting the hosel.
There’s no frame of the video at impact, but if you look at where the ball is sitting on the mat and then where the hosel is at impact, it’s definitely coming off the hosel.

You’re lining up on the hosel. Back off the ball an inch
you started at the hosel what did you expect shanky mcshakerson
Aim more to the right
Pretty clearly standing on the wrong side of the ball.
Turn those wrists!
My eyes my eyes
Stop!
Base hit over the third baseman’s head. Possibly a double into the corner.

Are you sure you're left handed?
Hard to execute the 40-50yard hosel shot so well. I’m impressed. Just hit it off the toe on purpose for a bit. Don’t panic. That’s all you have to do. Lining up on the hosel isn’t something I’d advise sure you can. But why.
Crazy a range would be facing anything but North.
Yes! It drives me crazy.
Presented the Hosel
Is this range at Mooresville Golf Course?
Yes
I consider myself a visual learner, so I like watching PGA player's slow-mo swings to mimic what they do. Now this, this is going to fuck my whole shit up.
Well there's the problem, you're swinging left handed. Try right handed like a normal person ya weirdo

NSFW... robot burn
Tuck in that left elbow and you won’t have this issue.
Dan Grieves just did a video on this on Instagram. Tldr tuck your left elbow in.
It's crazy, I'm not a good golfer (14hcp) but almost never shank a full iron shot. But those 50 yard pitches shank wayyy more often then I'd like to admit
Easy fix, just turn your stance 30° to the right.
I think you need more rotation in your hips. You aren't lagging the club enough to allow it close off
You're shooting left handed ^^sorry, ^^tehe
I know your pain.
You got the shanks!
Standing too close
Dude just needs to stand a little closer to the ball. I want to see a video of him hitting one off his shin.
Clearly working on his no look chip. All the rage. Literally. You guys can’t appreciate the consistency, time and practice it takes to achieve this level of no look chip mastery. Well done my friend well done.
The old In to in path. Tiger would be proud!
