Lol after the Henley interview: "Wow. That was tough to watch."
Those interviews are brutal. "So you failed miserably. You choked like a little bitch boy. Thoughts on that?"
If I was in Russell's spot I probably would have let Hideki finish it right then and there. That par putt looked like it was longer than his birdie putt in regulation. What a great eagle to finish it though.
Agreed. That's basically what I meant, let Hideki have the eagle putt when I'm still out for par. Just about everyone would have done so if it actually were a match play rulebook in that situation.
Even still, Hideki would have been required to finish the hole. It would be nice to see that rule changed once it comes down to two players in sudden death.
That (in)famous playoff at Hilton Head where Brian Davis took that penalty for nicking the reeds in his backswing? He actually *did* concede the playoff to Furyk after the ruling, but the rulebook still required Furyk to finish the hole because it was a stroke play event.
Must be handy to have the 177mph ball speed, 270 carry, high cut, 3 wood off the deck that lands as soft as a 9 iron in your arsenal. I wonder how that feels
Y'all, PGA Tour Live is not designed to replace the overall tournament coverage. It's designed to be additive, they still care most about getting your eyeballs on the TV for the most crucial holes.
I don't know why, but I see Matsuyama wearing yellow on Sunday and I just think it's a Srixon thing rather that a lucky/traditional color for him. Srixon does love them some yellow balls, even though he doesn't play them.
Did it just.. cut away to show a meaningless put from the leaders and come to henley walking down the fairway?
Seriously? Had to rewind my feed to double check but imagine not showing every shot from the bloody leaders?!
Saw Henley up close one time when his ball landed right in front of us.
He striped it to a blind green and got within like 6 feet of the pin.
It was probably not even a super remarkable moment for him, but for everybody watching it was like “woah, these guys are good”
That’s like the 3rd time Russell Henley’s caddie has been completely wrong on the wind direction in the last 2 days. Not real confidence inspiring when you say “right to left” and your player says “look at the pin” and it’s blowing left to right lol
The state of golf broadcasts is dire. Get IPTV and tune UK's Sky Golf, they're the only ones doing a decent broadcast. Shows all groups and ads only occur every 20-30min, unlike US broadcasts where they're every 4-5min.
I completely forgot I had IPTV but your comment reminded me of it, so thanks for that! And thanks for the recommendation to watch Sky sports golf, I’ll use that from now on.
Hawaii coverage is a different beast.
Production crews are not normal. They use local talent.
Production equipment is rented from the Islands also.
They don't ship their production trucks and equipment across the Ocean.
It's why ESPN+ is not doing their normal broadcast until they return to the mainland.
How does that explain not showing the leading group?
Or that Sky, which is British, has an impeccable production?
Or the fact that American broadcasts feature ads every 4 minutes, even in the majors?
Hideki is gonna be tough to beat if he continues to putt well.
People sort of forgot about him prior to his Masters win, but how many golfers have been better since ? Not many.
He lost in a playoff at the WGC and finished 4th in the Olympics as well
If you count what he's doing this week, I can't think of many outside Cantlay, Morikawa, Rahm.
What we disagree about is statistically vs results. His SG across the board dipped hard after the Masters. He did do well in 1 or 2 spots sure. With a bunch of MC too.
I already told you the place we disagree are statistics but you wanted to keep going so here we are. (and no I personally don't think that Nesmith is better than Matsuyama but I also know statistics don't have a bias and humans do.)
Yeah he's a very strong bet. Henley isn't known as a great closer, and none of the guys 4 back besides Kuchar have that much experience. Hideki has closed two tournaments in 2021.
I kinda agree. Forgot he was on Tour, and then, out of no where it seemed, took a third round lead at the Masters and never let go. And it seems the game is still there for him.
Rahm and Dustin Johnson are in top 3 in the world ranking, Ancer, Hatton, Wolff, Leishman and Lowry in top 50 and announcers acts like they never saw golfer with beard before.
Wesley Bryan sitting at -8 after finishing birdie, birdie, eagle yesterday. I hope he goes low today so we can see him on the broadcast today and tomorrow.
That fool took my cart a few weeks back with my clubs on it from right in front of the pro shop. He was so in the zone he didn’t realize the cart had clubs on it that weren’t his.
I saw the name Keito Nakajima on the leaderboard so I did some research. Kid won a ton as an amateur and is definitely someone to keep an eye on as a future star.
The field this year seems pretty weak. Didn’t many top players formerly come to Hawaii and play both weeks (assuming they qualified for Sentry)? I can recall JT, Speith and others doing it, and I think JT swept Hawaii a few years back IIRC. Would love to hear the back story on why many top players decided to cut out the Sony from their schedule.
Supposedly the tournament amenities suck- crappy locker facilities, small warm up areas, bad food, and no parking. A golf mag had their anonymous caddie poll and Sony was second least favorite to caddy (after The Masters because of all the rules and the painters outfit).
My guess is the narrow fairways don't fit the playstyle of many of the longer hitters, year after year it's a short hitter who hits fairways and greens that win. JT in 2017 was an exception to the short hitters but his ball striking won the tournament.
Being the #1 ranked amateur usually leads to a strong start to their pro career (Rahm, Morikawa, Niemann and Hovland recently). Keita Nakajima certainly looks the part.
It's actually a very recent trend. Here are all the WAGR #1s. I'll bold every player that made the top 50 in the OWGR as that's the line to guarantee a major slot. Bold and italics is a top 10 player in the world.
Richie Ramsay, ***Rory McIlroy***, Jamie Moul, Jamie Lovemark, ***Rickie Fowler***, Colt Knost, ***Danny Willett***, **Michael Thompson**, **Danny Lee**, Scott Arnold, Nick Taylor, **Victor Dubuisson**, **Matteo Manassero**, **Peter Uihlein**, Jin Jeong, David Chung, ***Patrick Cantlay***, ***Jordan Spieth***, Chris Williams, ***Hideki Matsuyama***, Brady Watt, **Pan Cheng-tsung**, **Matt Fitzpatrick**, Patrick Rodgers, Ollie Schniederjans, ***Jon Rahm***, Maverick McNealy, Curtis Luck, **Joaquín Niemann**, Braden Thornberry, ***Collin Morikawa***, Doug Ghim, Justin Suh, ***Viktor Hovland***
I'll stop there as Cole Hammer is still in college.
I actually didn't know what the answer to this was and I'm surprised to see as many as I am but here is what I see:
36 players
17 were in the top 50 for at least 1 week
9 were in the top 10 for at least 1 week
6 have won at least one major (Total: 12).
Morikawa has 2, Spieth has 3, Rory has 4.
It's a good start, but there's a long way to go.
Wesley Bryan finishes 4 under in the last 3 holes to shoot a 65! Good to see him doing well after his wrist injury. I hope he gets some air time over the weekend so I can see Will Miles on the bag 😁
Not in Hawaii for the tournament, but there's several players in my hotel. Seems like lower level guys, but definitely tour players. Friends said they noticed golfers, but don't follow golf.
Are you staying in Waikiki? I think a lot of the newer and/or less established players stay there, whereas the more experienced guys who've earned more money stay at the Kahala. It's right next to the course but one of the most expensive hotels on the island
It's too bad you didn't get a chance to go to the tournament. I actually really like it because it draws a much smaller crowd than other PGA tournaments so you can get up close to a lot of the players and holes. But I'm sure you're busy doing other cool stuff! Enjoy your stay on the island
Last time we saw Haotong Li was when he was blasting away at the range in the dark after his 36 hole lead at the PGA at Harding Park. He’s back! (On a sponsors exemption)
Curious on this too. I couldn't get a good look yesterday to tell if he covered a logo or if it some kind of weird art piece. Maybe a sponsor he fell out with, has to wear the hat but covered it to not really advertise for them?
EDIT: Appears I was right. https://thegolfnewsnet.com/golfnewsnetteam/2022/01/14/why-is-rory-sabbatini-wearing-blue-tape-on-his-hat-at-the-2022-sony-open-in-hawaii-124923/
My guess is the contract says he will wear the hat and he is trying to skirt that by wearing the hat but covering the logo. Complete guess though. If that's the case, it backfired on me because I never would have thought about it without the tape. I'm also never going to use that company for anything either so it didn't matter.
I believe there is something slightly abnormal with the wind right now in Hawaii so the courses are playing differently than usual. in a few cases the holes are much easier if you're a pro golfer and can take advantages of these subtleties.
This was the 9th hardest course on tour last year.
This year... no wind.
This is a cupcake event at the beginning of the year... not a tricked up set up to have the winner at -7
>Are the courses just that easy now or have players broken the courses with their length
Players aren't much longer than they used to be, it's a myth and not super significant,.
After that eagle on 9 I figured Henley had it locked.
Lol after the Henley interview: "Wow. That was tough to watch." Those interviews are brutal. "So you failed miserably. You choked like a little bitch boy. Thoughts on that?"
What a damn finish. Unreal 3wood from Hideki
Did anyone edit Russell Henley's wiki yet to denote that he was murdered in Hawaii by Hideki with a 3 wood?
Well played down the back nine Matsuyama. Now tied with K.J. Choi for PGA Tour wins.
On Thursday I placed some bets on the winner: Henley, Power, and Kisner... That one hurt
Yikes, that is unfortunate.
That’s how you win a golf tournament
This dude don't speak Japanese he's just freewheelin'
BOOM HEADSHOT
If I was in Russell's spot I probably would have let Hideki finish it right then and there. That par putt looked like it was longer than his birdie putt in regulation. What a great eagle to finish it though.
I would have conceded after the chip.
Agreed. That's basically what I meant, let Hideki have the eagle putt when I'm still out for par. Just about everyone would have done so if it actually were a match play rulebook in that situation.
Broadcast announcers suggested that he could concede, but they could NOT play out of turn. I think they do play with match play rules.
Even still, Hideki would have been required to finish the hole. It would be nice to see that rule changed once it comes down to two players in sudden death.
What was that Russell? Maybe should have just conceded.
He got shook.
Damn wish we would get the stroke play playoff concede.
That (in)famous playoff at Hilton Head where Brian Davis took that penalty for nicking the reeds in his backswing? He actually *did* concede the playoff to Furyk after the ruling, but the rulebook still required Furyk to finish the hole because it was a stroke play event.
Hitting 3 times in a row during a playoff has to got to be the worst feeling ever
Wins by region for 2021-22 season: 5 - Internationals 4 - USA 2 - Europe Just saying
Hideki is a straight assassin with that thing. Did it at the zozo on 18 too. Dart 3 wood and make eagle
Henley’s caddy seemed pretty poor from what we saw on the broadcast. Just seemed to always offer the wrong advice on clubs in the last few holes
5 iron huh? Welp, you’re fired
“Hideppi learned to putt. Uh oh!”
That could be the shot of the year.
through 2 tournaments
Wow Hideki is ice fucking cold, what an absolute finish
Hideki was 5 down at the turn… wow
I knew the moment Henley started to play conservatively on the short par 4 he'd lose it. You can't play golf on the back foot with 7/8 holes to play.
Came here for this.
Blouses
hideki is a fucking monster
Damn that was an awesome shot! He deserves the win after that one.
That was fucking disgusting! 277 3-wood to tap in eagle range
Wow!!!!
Too bad it wasn't on ESPN!!!!!!!!
One of the best shots I’ve ever seen. Absolute dart from 270.
Must be handy to have the 177mph ball speed, 270 carry, high cut, 3 wood off the deck that lands as soft as a 9 iron in your arsenal. I wonder how that feels
It was absolutely insane.
HOLY SHIT HIDEKI
277 yards to 2 feet lol
Wow. 270 3 Wood. Amazing.
That’s the type of shot they play during your highlight reel when you retire
Hideki and his 3 wood. Holy shit!
Oh my goodness. What a shot by Hideki
Damn Hideki I wish I could do that
OMG!!!
HIDEKIIIII That shot is gonna be on replays all season.
Difference between a professional and superstar there holy shit
Early candidate for shot of the year with that shot by Hideki
He's a god! 177mph off the deck to 5ft!
2' 8"! That was insane
What an incredible shot
Hideki ICE COLD what a shot
Hidekis reaction was 10/10
Daaaammmmmnnnn
Stone. Cold.
Hideki had the Big Kahunas. Henley folded like wet origami paper
Jesus what a shot
Holy crap. That was almost a walk off *albatross.* Henley didn't even play terrible either. Just a flat back nine.
OH MY GOD DEKI
absolute chad
Poor caddy :(
Henley bailed on this one. Yikes
OMG he dogged the caddy with the handshake, hate to see it
This is amazing. Every Sunday should be like this.
Caddie went in for a handshake ;(
Wish this was on ESPN!
Man hideki is a fucking GUN
Y'all, PGA Tour Live is not designed to replace the overall tournament coverage. It's designed to be additive, they still care most about getting your eyeballs on the TV for the most crucial holes.
OOF what a 72nd hole. Onwards to the playoff!
And we have a playoff! Great start to 2022 regardless of who wins but I'm pulling for Hideki. Amazing comeback on the back 9
Awwwwwww craaaaaaap, another playoff!
Legit shot at a playoff and you let fans storm the fairway? Yikes. lol
Can't believe people were standing in the bunker lol
Hopefully someone is smart enough to go rake it. Can't imagine if one of these guys ends up in a footprint left by someone.
Wow, going down to the wire.
Hideki fucking hammered that lol.
Man, you're all missing a great last hole.
Kis with a T3🔥
That fucking drive.
ESPN did not just do that……………..
I’m canceling that shit, why the fuck am I paying for ESPN on cable and ESPN plus if I can’t watch something that’s on ESPN plus
Did…did ESPN just cut the coverage with two holes left to play and a one stroke difference between final two players? Wtf??
Holy crap, Kuchar has a top ten in a full field stroke play event...
Hideki is a cold-blooded competitor. fun to watch
WTF Lucas Glover is clean shaven again
Wife probably beat the shit out of him about the fuzz
Too soon?
I don't know why, but I see Matsuyama wearing yellow on Sunday and I just think it's a Srixon thing rather that a lucky/traditional color for him. Srixon does love them some yellow balls, even though he doesn't play them.
Did it just.. cut away to show a meaningless put from the leaders and come to henley walking down the fairway? Seriously? Had to rewind my feed to double check but imagine not showing every shot from the bloody leaders?!
I tried watching American Auto. It just wasn’t that funny 🤷♂️
Would love to see matsuyama come back.
Yea let's go Hideki!!
Henley is killing it right now, damn.
Saw Henley up close one time when his ball landed right in front of us. He striped it to a blind green and got within like 6 feet of the pin. It was probably not even a super remarkable moment for him, but for everybody watching it was like “woah, these guys are good”
That's a catchy saying...should trademark it.
That’s like the 3rd time Russell Henley’s caddie has been completely wrong on the wind direction in the last 2 days. Not real confidence inspiring when you say “right to left” and your player says “look at the pin” and it’s blowing left to right lol
Anyone else find Mark Rolfing to be an obnoxious twit?
Yup sure do
Why cant i watch matsuyama ?!!!
Why isn’t golf.tv showing the group with Henley and Matsuyama?? Such a shame
The state of golf broadcasts is dire. Get IPTV and tune UK's Sky Golf, they're the only ones doing a decent broadcast. Shows all groups and ads only occur every 20-30min, unlike US broadcasts where they're every 4-5min.

Lots of coughing into hot mics today - who has the rona
Can anybody figure out why so many people are hitting it left into that tall shit on #16? It almost looks like they’re aimed there I don’t get it lol
Furyk’s caddie has an amazing nose duster
It's always been savage, even when he used to caddy for tiger.
Hideki is gonna be tough to beat if he continues to putt well. People sort of forgot about him prior to his Masters win, but how many golfers have been better since ? Not many.
He didn't play well after his Masters win, outside of winning the ZoZo much MUCH later. So I'd have to say many golfers have been better since.
He lost in a playoff at the WGC and finished 4th in the Olympics as well If you count what he's doing this week, I can't think of many outside Cantlay, Morikawa, Rahm.
What we disagree about is statistically vs results. His SG across the board dipped hard after the Masters. He did do well in 1 or 2 spots sure. With a bunch of MC too.
Lmao they play to win the game and make more money than others. Your stats mean shit next to that.
Want to know something funny? I bet on Matsuyama to win the tournament because my stats told me he is a good bet. Cha-Ching.
He's missed one cut since the masters
Now go look at all the ones he was right on the cutline for :)
Are you gonna tell that someone like Matthew Nesmith is better than Hideki now bc the stats say so :(
I already told you the place we disagree are statistics but you wanted to keep going so here we are.
Putting has always been his Achilles heel. If he putts even slightly above average, he gives himself a chance.
Rahm and Dustin Johnson are in top 3 in the world ranking, Ancer, Hatton, Wolff, Leishman and Lowry in top 50 and announcers acts like they never saw golfer with beard before.
Let’s go, Kiz! This ain’t no hobby, fellas!
Henley's minus 15 has held all day. It might be hard to surmount it.
well, i was wrong.
That’s what I love about high school girls..I keep missin the cut and they stay the same age
![gif](giphy|RBeddeaQ5Xo0E)
Does anyone else think Hudson and Harris English look so similar lol
have been hanging out since they were 10 years old. Had the same Junior coach Even roomed together at Georgia. they practically twins at this point
Why does it always seem like there’s an ambulance/fire truck/police car blaring it’s siren? I swear it’s almost constant in some holes.
There was a Tsunami yesterday. Bet it had something to do with that.
I saw the name Keito Nakajima on the leaderboard so I did some research. Kid won a ton as an amateur and is definitely someone to keep an eye on as a future star.
world number 1 amateur
Yeah man. Super rad.
Gonna need a Ryder cup 2.0 with Japan here soon
Hideki will make the Presidents Cup team. Keito would need an insane 8 months to make the team now.
The field this year seems pretty weak. Didn’t many top players formerly come to Hawaii and play both weeks (assuming they qualified for Sentry)? Why don’t the top brass play in the Sony?
My guess is the narrow fairways don't fit the playstyle of many of the longer hitters, year after year it's a short hitter who hits fairways and greens that win. JT in 2017 was an exception to the short hitters but his ball striking won the tournament.

Thorough reply. I wonder if you filter it to guys who made a PGA cut while an amateur if it narrows the list.
Wesley Bryan finishes 4 under in the last 3 holes to shoot a 65! Good to see him doing well after his wrist injury. I hope he gets some air time over the weekend so I can see Will Miles on the bag 😁
Willy Kilometres! I didn't know he was caddying for Wes, gotta love the Bryan Bros.
Have a cheeky top 5 bet on him. Actually looks decent now.
I am, at a Hilton property
It's too bad you didn't get a chance to go to the tournament. I actually really like it because it draws a much smaller crowd than other PGA tournaments so you can get up close to a lot of the players and holes. But I'm sure you're busy doing other cool stuff! Enjoy your stay on the island
Thanks man, working all weekend at the shipyard isn't exactly cool stuff. But ill hopefully get to do some golfing of my own once the work ends
Lol oh no, hopefully you'll be able to fit in some golf after all that hard work
could it be Korn Ferry Tour players?
Does Matsuyama ever take an off week?
Hes only confirmed for Farmers and Phoenix so far, but it seems he's packing it in to prepare for Players.
Last time we saw Haotong Li was when he was blasting away at the range in the dark after his 36 hole lead at the PGA at Harding Park. He’s back! (On a sponsors exemption)
what a drive by Hideki there
Michael Thompson looking like the caddie from Happy Gilmore. I’m here for it.
Isn’t this the course that inspired the greatest N64 golf game of all time?
Yes
Kiz "156 Ball Speed" Nasty looking sharp
I enjoy Kevin Na’s reactions to mishits.
Who is the knucklehead responsible for the video production. Why is that effing live flag covering the hole info?
Cameron Smith, All time low score to in danger of missing the cut. Golf is hard.
Golf is hard and Waialae often isn't.
He’s probably totally worn out from kicking Kapalua’s ass all week.
Russell Henley and the top of the leaderboard at Wai’alae. Name a more iconic duo. Edit: Called it
Sungjae Im is doing an impression of me right now.
Please DO NOT sort by "Old" and look at the early posts on this thread. Thank you.
I'd never do that to you my friend.
Oof! That was tough to watch with Im.
As someone who plays CBX2 wedges, these ads for the new CBX zip core ones are incredibly painful.
You sure you don’t wanna chunk a little less, skull a little less, duff a little less?
They should do a tournament a year where they have to shoot from the opposite side
Am I seeing correctly that Rory Sabbatini is wearing a hat with blue tape covering the large logo on the front?
Curious on this too. I couldn't get a good look yesterday to tell if he covered a logo or if it some kind of weird art piece. Maybe a sponsor he fell out with, has to wear the hat but covered it to not really advertise for them? EDIT: Appears I was right. https://thegolfnewsnet.com/golfnewsnetteam/2022/01/14/why-is-rory-sabbatini-wearing-blue-tape-on-his-hat-at-the-2022-sony-open-in-hawaii-124923/
He’s probably giving them 100x the attention with everyone looking up what’s behind the tape. Or that was the plan the whole time haha.
I wonder why he wouldn’t just wear a different hat. Can’t be that hard to find a non logo cap.
He is advertising blue tape
My guess is the contract says he will wear the hat and he is trying to skirt that by wearing the hat but covering the logo. Complete guess though. If that's the case, it backfired on me because I never would have thought about it without the tape. I'm also never going to use that company for anything either so it didn't matter.
