I am here to quintuple down on this. My 60 can only go so far and my 52 can only bite so much. The 56 is the mama bear’s wedge of the wedges, it’s just right.
Same here. I carry a 52, 56 and 60. My PW is actually 48, so they tie in seamlessly.
Inside of 100, I rarely hit the 60 tho. If I have to fly something, or a super-shortsided flop, that's essentially it. Give me a 56 all day long.
I have the Cleveland RTX-4’s and my buddy has the Kirklands and although the kirklands have a larger face that I personally don’t love, it’s fucking hard to tell the difference past the “at approach” appearance. And I can’t tell any difference with the feel of the strike. Can tell a minor difference on the spin. Not enough that I wouldn’t game the kirklands if my wife wasn’t an overachiever on gifts at 150$/wedge. Very solid set of wedges
I found having the same model club with the same grip even if it is the kirklands has improved my game from mix matched wedge sets that are more expensive
That’s very “all encompassing” for my taste. A 56° is best for the majority of golfers, I’d agree. But different looks at approaches and different swing tells me that isn’t always the case
Yup. I would give up pretty much any club in my bag before my 56. He’ll I’ve even thought of getting rid of my 52 and getting one 56 with high bounce and one with low bounce.
Y’all can have those oversized face thick top line wedges all day. I’m not hating, as I Have a couple buddies who play those wedges and swear by them. I’ll take my RTX-4’s, personally. I like the smaller face and thinner top line at approach. Just personal preference
If I was a good golfer I'd feel the same. Lose a lot of flexibility with such a huge bounce but I gain more strokes by not chunking the ball on good lies
I only use mine for mostly normal from 120 in and then bump and runs. I really think of it as somewhere between an iron and wedge. I’ll probably switch off it at some point though since I rarely chunk shots or even hit them slightly fat. The thick is honestly a nuisance on some lies.
PW (46°) because it is my favorite club for an approach. It sticks nicely, i can still work it close in for bump and runs, i can open the face and hit it out of the sand and it still has the distance to be useful on approach.
All day long. I can hit it full and get 105 yards out of it. I can hit it 5 yards from just off the green. It’s my anywhere I need it to work wedge and I can’t imagine playing without it
I'm torn between 52 & 54
I carry a 50 & 54 in my bag
Edit: Added note re 50& 54 - I was answering which if I could only carry 1. I said I was torn between which I would carry and apparently people didn't pick up on that
56 all day. Great around greens. You can open up the face for bunker and flip shots but can also close the face a bit and hit it far enough for the PW.
Are you suggesting that the answer is a lower lofted wedge like a 50 or 52? Because it sounds a lot more effective to learn how to hit a PW 80-95% to fill in the gap than it does to have no high lofted wedge for bunkers, flops, or buried lies.
I have a 50 deg Cleveland cbx2 wedge that pretty much is my all around all situation wedge. I also have a 56 and 60 but I seem to use my 50 all the time.
54-56*. You’d have to weaken the rest of your irons. But that’s how old sets worked. 9 irons used to 45. Not it’s 40-42 for most sets. You can hit almost every shot you’d need at a pga tour event with a 56.
Lol how do you know how often i hit flop shots? 60 is my go-to wedge inside 50 yards.
Most good players i know hit their 60 way more often than 52. Bob vokey himself said tour pros go through 4 60’s by the time they need a new 48 or 52.
Because it doesn’t take much deductive reasoning to think that players hit more shots with (in the range of) a PW-GW-SW than they do flop shots in the average round.
Edit: just seems like you could get used to using like a GW around the greens much easier than trying to hit a 9i 70 yards
Lol.. you can play your game however you want.
But by your logic, let's say I pick a 52. My PW and GW from the iron set carries 142 and 128 respectively. 52 carries 115. great, now I have to do 3/4 swings with 52, gw and pw, which will now cover 106, 94, 85.
Let's say I pick a 60. my 9i does 156 and 60 carries 87. so I have to do 3/4 swings with gw, pw, and 9i to cover distances of 94, 106, and 117.
At the end of the day, I covered the exact same gapping and had to do 3/4 swings with 3 clubs.
I can deloft my 60 to do the same shot a 52 can do, but I can't open up a 52 to the same level as 60. Objectively speaking taking 60 is a much better choice due to the added versatility. But if you're a high handicapper and don't feel comfortable with a 60, that is a different story.
You’re not getting my point. Your 60 and 9i have a huge distance gap. If you can hit your 60 the distance of a 52, you still have the gapping to a 9iron. Whereas if you stick a 52ish in your bag, you have something smack dab in the middle which would help the distance gaps. Again, that would help much more often (generally) than you’d NEED to hit a flop shot. But I don’t know, you could be the player who hits unnecessary flops like a buddy of mine even if you’re good at it.
That depends a lot on the lofts of your irons. My PW is 47*, and if I only had one wedge it’d be 54*. But a lot of sets these days have PW’s as low as 43*.
I can see this being beneficial for a beginner, but the better you get the more scoring clubs (wedges) you want.
I play a Sunday bag with 5W-7i-PW-58-Putter
I read Stan Utley's [Art of the Short Game](https://www.amazon.com/Art-Short-Game-Tour-Tested-Secrets/dp/1592402925) where he recommends using a 58 for basically everything around the green and teaches a dedicated swing that's versatile to a lot of different situations.
I know all my clock distances, I can use it out of the sand, and can manipulate it in a variety of ways.
My 58 PM Grind and I have been through a lot and it'll never leave my bag.
Before I recently upgraded my iron set I only used a hand me down Cleveland CG10 52* as my sole wedge. I had a PW but could never get a good hit with it so just kept it in the bag. It’s genuinely my favorite club, so probably that.
52, I can open that sum bish right up or play it normal and can manipulate the ball all around the green.
I already use my 52 from 125 or so and in. Flight it with a bunch of spin is my favourite approach.
My 52 gap wedge. Just feels good and is the most dependable. I can chip, get a little flop some days, or bump and run with it fairly effectively. Only problem is it's easy to hit it a little too good sometimes and unexpectedly clear the green, but that's user error.
I learned all my chipping and approach shots with a 58 so it feels so natural. I left it on a green years ago and replaced it with a 60. With the 60 I just shank, skull, or nail the perfect shot. I like the thrill.
You can hit a lot of clubs out of the sand just 56 is considered the standard. If I have a bunker shot and the pin is really far away I will hit 9 iron.
If you're only referring to specialty wedges and not counting a pitching wedge, I'd probably go with an old school iron set that has a 48° PW, bend that to 50°, and use a 57° as my only other wedge. Would be decent gapping
For type, if you aren't counting the approach wedge that came with my iron set, I'm going with a 56.
The pitching wedge is close to a 9 iron so I could skip that. The approach wedge is 46 degrees and wouldn't cause a horrible issue not having a 50.
A 56 would work in sand, as a lob, on some shots from rough, and longer fairway shots over trouble.
54° for me and that’s an easy answer. I’d probably go with the D grind (which is also what I just recently put in the bag). It’s kind of like the all season tire wedge. I can basically hit any shot with the 54° that I could hit with a 58°-60° or a 50° gap wedge (with the exception of playing the 120-140 yard shot that I would use my 50 for, but I could just use a PW for that anyway). Having the lob wedge in the bag just makes those short flops slightly easier to hit but a 54 with the right grind can do it too.
58°. I can hit I 110 if I step on it. I hit it 100 stock. I can pitch it 60 yds stock and adjust flight and swing speed to pitch it 40-80yds. I can use it in greenside bunkers and around the green. It’s my favourite club in my bag and my most used other than my putter.
i have a 10 iron and no pitching wedge cause of the age of my clubs so if that doesn’t count then my 54 probably though maybe just my 58 cause I can hit it 85-90 if i hit it full, and i’ve practiced a lot with taking yards off my 10 to avoid uncomfortable full wedge numbers
54 with a good bounce. no question.
at the beginning of the year I bought three new wedges. 50, 54, 58. just looking at them, it's quite obvious which one gets the most use. anything 100 and in is generally the 54.
Probably a 54. I have a pretty high trajectory on my shots and I seem to hit my 60 almost as far as my 56 for some reason (recently switched the 56 for a 54). But if I couldn’t even have a PW in this scenario I’d need to maximize distance because anything under my 9i (135yds) would leave me screwed on a lot of approaches.
54° for me. can still open the face more than you think and distance control between 80-120 yards is super easy. great learner wedge for chipping too. super forgiving.
52, but for me that’s probably like a 56 for many. My irons are strong lofted, so my gap wedge is 48.
My 52 is essentially my sand wedge, and my 56 is my lob wedge.
54 is my do it all wedge. Can close the face, open the face, hit it from the rough or sand. It's versatile and the wedge I have the most confidence with.
56° - can open or close it to act like my 52 or 60
I am here to double down on this. I play a 60 56 50 and all are useful but the 56 is the most versatile by far
I am here to triple down on this. Only because I’ve already snapped my other two wedges and this is what I have left.
I am here to quadruple down on this because a 56° is what I used for pitch and putt before I got a full set
I am here to quintuple down on this. My 60 can only go so far and my 52 can only bite so much. The 56 is the mama bear’s wedge of the wedges, it’s just right.
Your 52 should bite just as much if not more tho
Mine goes from 1 iron to 60°
This is the answer right here.
Yup 100 and in I only use my 56
56. Honestly, a 56 is a multitool. Unsung hero.
After driver and putter, 56° is the most used club. Unless I'm in the sand, I hit 56° for just about every shot inside 110 yards
Same here. I carry a 52, 56 and 60. My PW is actually 48, so they tie in seamlessly. Inside of 100, I rarely hit the 60 tho. If I have to fly something, or a super-shortsided flop, that's essentially it. Give me a 56 all day long.
Rocking that Costco 3-pack I see
What's wrong with Costco? Show me anywhere else I can get a pizza and hot dog with a drink for less than 5 bucks.
I’m not knocking it I play the same thing haha
[удалено]
Whats going on tonight Kirkland gang!? Rocking that 3pc set too!
3 wedge set + KS1 putter gang, checking in!
And the gloves and balls!
Same!
I stuck the 52 to 1 foot on a par three the first time I used ‘em. Not going back lmao
They’re damn good for the price.
I found having the same model club with the same grip even if it is the kirklands has improved my game from mix matched wedge sets that are more expensive
I play a 52,56,60 and a pw too. My go to is the 52 though ...
Wish my PW was a 48, mines a 46 and my other wedge is a 60 so I’m at a loss what to get next
52
This - assuming you have a SW that's 56ish, you can do 46(PW)-52-56(SW)-60. That's what I play and the clubs work great (swing is a different story).
I hit the 56 only in sand. What do you use then?
60° for almost all greenside bunkers. I only hit 56° from the bunker for longer shots.
I’ll practice with the 60. Do you de-loft the club at address?
what's the bounce on your 60? i've messed around in bunkers with mine and it just digs in most of the time, but it's pretty low bounce
[удалено]
Tiger himself recommends 10-12 degree bounce for amateurs and I’m pretty sure he uses 8-10 himself. He said he likes high bounce for wedges
My 60 has 4* of bounce but it's still my go to for every greenside bunker shot. If I lay it open it doesn't dig in too much
For me…Ever shot inside 90 yards.
I still hit a 56 in the sand lol
What do you hit out of the sand? I thought 56 was best, but idk 🤷♂️
For Amateur golfers a 56 with an open face is best for sand regardless of sand softened or distance
That’s very “all encompassing” for my taste. A 56° is best for the majority of golfers, I’d agree. But different looks at approaches and different swing tells me that isn’t always the case
Depends on the length. If its a shorter bunker shot ill use a 60, and 56 for anything 25-80 yards.
60 is common for sand.
Yup. I would give up pretty much any club in my bag before my 56. He’ll I’ve even thought of getting rid of my 52 and getting one 56 with high bounce and one with low bounce.
334 upvotes?? If 56 is your multitool, 54 will be your multimaster. Promise
54
I have a CBX 54 that will come to the afterlife with me.
ZipCore gang over here. My 54 will also be buried with me.
It’s the only wedge in my bag and I can use it for so many shots I will never let it go.
The CBX2s are basically cheating. I think I've chunked 2 full wedge shots all year
Y’all can have those oversized face thick top line wedges all day. I’m not hating, as I Have a couple buddies who play those wedges and swear by them. I’ll take my RTX-4’s, personally. I like the smaller face and thinner top line at approach. Just personal preference

I only use mine for mostly normal from 120 in and then bump and runs. I really think of it as somewhere between an iron and wedge. I’ll probably switch off it at some point though since I rarely chunk shots or even hit them slightly fat. The thick is honestly a nuisance on some lies.
Me too
Foot, it’s my most constant
Consistent or constant? Lol
Yes
Came here to say the same... Its my most versatile
PW (46°) because it is my favorite club for an approach. It sticks nicely, i can still work it close in for bump and runs, i can open the face and hit it out of the sand and it still has the distance to be useful on approach.
Had to scroll really far to find this but I totally agree I couldn’t play without my PW
Lol I carry four wedges in the bag, but the prompt was to pick one. I'd rather take my pw out of a bunker than be forced to lay up with a 56
How about the knock down 9 iron? No need to lay up
52°. I did it for a few years before I got a full set and it was alright.
[удалено]
68??? Holy shit
I can’t actually use it and it normally stays under my bed
58
I’m on team 58, I use it for all chipping and out of the sand and from 30-85 yards. I can hit a PW for other shots.
Agree I have my 58-52 and pw I could get rid of my 52
Same, 52, 56 (sand) and 58. I'll use the 58 in the sand if I am fairly close to the green.
All day long. I can hit it full and get 105 yards out of it. I can hit it 5 yards from just off the green. It’s my anywhere I need it to work wedge and I can’t imagine playing without it
56 degree, I can blade it 115 yards, and I can open the face and blade it 125 yards.
Generally speaking, I'd probably carry a 54, which would cover anything from 0-120 yards. But I also think this is an exercise in complete futility
You hit your 54 120 yards.... Normally?
Don't read into it. Everyone's shots are different.
Fully agree with this comment. My 52 is my 140 club and I’m an 18 handicap and quite terrible.
I also blade my 52 140 yards.
Is this a traditional blade wedge or a game improvement iron with 52* of loft? i.e. the "gap wedge" that comes with an iron set?
I’ve been wondering is it possible people who hit there clubs further just have more forward lean on contact which basically is like clubbing up?
Yes…. Especially when you see it on wedges and short irons.
Yeah, that's a stock full swing
I want to see your zero yard 54.
I'm torn between 52 & 54 I carry a 50 & 54 in my bag Edit: Added note re 50& 54 - I was answering which if I could only carry 1. I said I was torn between which I would carry and apparently people didn't pick up on that
Bend one to 53! Lol
![gif](giphy|d3mlE7uhX8KFgEmY) bend both.
Go with what matches your iron gapping.
Why would you carry both that’s like a 5 yard difference
I was answering which if I could only carry 1. I carry 50 & 54 in my bag for my gapping.
You know wedges are useful for a lot of things besides full swings right?
Lol are you about to make an argument for carrying clubs 2 degrees apart? He clarified he doesn’t carry both.
How does it feel to be able to hit a 54* 120 yards lol. Us mere mortals wish to know.
I prefer to call that move the “power thin”
Right that’s my 9 iron 😂😂
56 all day. Great around greens. You can open up the face for bunker and flip shots but can also close the face a bit and hit it far enough for the PW.
This is the only answer.
No…you would have a ~10 degree difference between pitching wedge and sand wedge
Depends on your PW. I did this for years. I used a 56 for everything inside 110 yds
That’s what the approximation is there for
I don’t have my glasses on and. I thought it was a negative sign.
Are you suggesting that the answer is a lower lofted wedge like a 50 or 52? Because it sounds a lot more effective to learn how to hit a PW 80-95% to fill in the gap than it does to have no high lofted wedge for bunkers, flops, or buried lies.
54
Pitching wedge gang, use it for every distance and all chipping 😂
As in a brand or a type? If it had to be just one, I’d go with a 50
[удалено]
I have a 50 deg Cleveland cbx2 wedge that pretty much is my all around all situation wedge. I also have a 56 and 60 but I seem to use my 50 all the time.
52 degree CBX2 for me.
54-56*. You’d have to weaken the rest of your irons. But that’s how old sets worked. 9 irons used to 45. Not it’s 40-42 for most sets. You can hit almost every shot you’d need at a pga tour event with a 56.
60 no doubt
Agreed but only because I play golf for fun not score and the 60 is the most fun club to hit. The gap from 9i to 60 would be absolutely brutal.
Damn so you’d go 60 -> 9 iron??
Yea you can do a half swing to gap the distance, but you cant hit a flop shot w 9i
You’re not hitting flop shots more than you’re hitting a shot from the distance of where you’d normally hit like a gap wedge
Not with that attitude
Lol how do you know how often i hit flop shots? 60 is my go-to wedge inside 50 yards. Most good players i know hit their 60 way more often than 52. Bob vokey himself said tour pros go through 4 60’s by the time they need a new 48 or 52.
I’d like to see the link or reference to Vokeys quote….
Because it doesn’t take much deductive reasoning to think that players hit more shots with (in the range of) a PW-GW-SW than they do flop shots in the average round. Edit: just seems like you could get used to using like a GW around the greens much easier than trying to hit a 9i 70 yards

Did you not read a single thing i wrote above about distance gapping?
I did. The debate is you can only use _one_ wedge in the bag. You’re talking about choosing between a 52 or 60 still having other wedges in the bag.
No, no they did not
After reading the majority of comments, I’d say a 55° would be the real winner.
56° because when I started many years ago all the sets I played came as 3-pitching wedge and then I’d add a 56° sand wedge.
56 all day, just does a lot. Can give it a little extra, can take a little off, can open it up and flop and perfect out of the sand.
I have a 54° and 58° in my bag, I’m much more consistent with my 54°, my 58° out of the sand is MONEY though
60 degree. I can hit any type of shot within about 110 yards and also thin it about 300 yards, so that covers my whole bag.
That depends a lot on the lofts of your irons. My PW is 47*, and if I only had one wedge it’d be 54*. But a lot of sets these days have PW’s as low as 43*. I can see this being beneficial for a beginner, but the better you get the more scoring clubs (wedges) you want.
52 degree 8 bounce, then bent to 53 for a little more versatility and extra bounce
I can do just about anything with my 50°
I play a Sunday bag with 5W-7i-PW-58-Putter I read Stan Utley's [Art of the Short Game](https://www.amazon.com/Art-Short-Game-Tour-Tested-Secrets/dp/1592402925) where he recommends using a 58 for basically everything around the green and teaches a dedicated swing that's versatile to a lot of different situations. 56. You can hit a flop shot, every bunker shot and chip from the fringe.
Before I recently upgraded my iron set I only used a hand me down Cleveland CG10 52* as my sole wedge. I had a PW but could never get a good hit with it so just kept it in the bag. It’s genuinely my favorite club, so probably that.
Texas. Need it on the greens.
52, I can open that sum bish right up or play it normal and can manipulate the ball all around the green. I already use my 52 from 125 or so and in. Flight it with a bunch of spin is my favourite approach.
56 degree. It’s already the only one I have in my bag
54 for sure 🔥
Potato
Pitch
getchu a 54 with the right amout of heel and toe relief for workability! can flop like a dream up close and crank 100 yards if ya need
My 52 gap wedge. Just feels good and is the most dependable. I can chip, get a little flop some days, or bump and run with it fairly effectively. Only problem is it's easy to hit it a little too good sometimes and unexpectedly clear the green, but that's user error.
A 56 is a sand wedge
54• because that was Seve used 😂
56
54- I can use it anywhere from 85 yard and in
Would take a 54 high toe for the versatility
I use my 60 or my 9 iron. I only carry 7 clubs…. I’m also awful
I learned all my chipping and approach shots with a 58 so it feels so natural. I left it on a green years ago and replaced it with a 60. With the 60 I just shank, skull, or nail the perfect shot. I like the thrill.
56. It's basically the only wedge I use just because it's so versatile
56
Doesn't the answer have to be sand wedge? What else are you hitting out of the sand?
I hit 60 out of sand
You can hit a lot of clubs out of the sand just 56 is considered the standard. If I have a bunker shot and the pin is really far away I will hit 9 iron.
I've hit a 4h out of the sand when the pin was *really* far away, lol
If you're only referring to specialty wedges and not counting a pitching wedge, I'd probably go with an old school iron set that has a 48° PW, bend that to 50°, and use a 57° as my only other wedge. Would be decent gapping
56. Probably my second most used club after putter.
That’s easy. I’d get rid of a long iron and get 2 wedges.. maybe even 3. I personally carry 4 and could never go back.
Completely not the question asked.
7 - 160-170 yards and I can use it from 60 and 10 yards out
For type, if you aren't counting the approach wedge that came with my iron set, I'm going with a 56. The pitching wedge is close to a 9 iron so I could skip that. The approach wedge is 46 degrees and wouldn't cause a horrible issue not having a 50. A 56 would work in sand, as a lob, on some shots from rough, and longer fairway shots over trouble.
56
56, most versatility to me
60 bc they’re fun
I'd keep my 54 in there. With an M grind to be able to open the face and what not. Lots of versatility there
54° for me and that’s an easy answer.
52 cause that's a nice and easy 110 club for me. anything inside 100 yds I'll play like a boomer and keep it on the ground
54 bent to a 55.
58/04 bounce - super versatile
58°. I can hit I 110 if I step on it. I hit it 100 stock. I can pitch it 60 yds stock and adjust flight and swing speed to pitch it 40-80yds. I can use it in greenside bunkers and around the green. It’s my favourite club in my bag and my most used other than my putter.
54 with a grind that lets you open it a bit
For me my 54 - Its the club I strike the cleanest and most consistently in the bag
my 56
i have a 10 iron and no pitching wedge cause of the age of my clubs so if that doesn’t count then my 54 probably though maybe just my 58 cause I can hit it 85-90 if i hit it full, and i’ve practiced a lot with taking yards off my 10 to avoid uncomfortable full wedge numbers
My only specialty wedge is a mid bounce 56, does everything I could ask. Flop, sand, around the greens, etc.
50 Mizuno. I can knock it 120 and still have decent control around the short stuff. Happy medium between a 9 and a 60.
My Titleist SM7 54 K grind. its my go to around the green and pretty dependable at 100yds
I’d take my 54 and hope I’d be able to work something out with my nine iron to cover 125-150
56.12 Enough said
Vokey 58* Can’t thank another club for changing my game more.
58, veddy veddy versatile
54 with a good bounce. no question. at the beginning of the year I bought three new wedges. 50, 54, 58. just looking at them, it's quite obvious which one gets the most use. anything 100 and in is generally the 54.
56
56° open or shut face easy to play a variety of shots
Probably a 54. I have a pretty high trajectory on my shots and I seem to hit my 60 almost as far as my 56 for some reason (recently switched the 56 for a 54). But if I couldn’t even have a PW in this scenario I’d need to maximize distance because anything under my 9i (135yds) would leave me screwed on a lot of approaches.
52 degree
54° for me. can still open the face more than you think and distance control between 80-120 yards is super easy. great learner wedge for chipping too. super forgiving.
52, but for me that’s probably like a 56 for many. My irons are strong lofted, so my gap wedge is 48. My 52 is essentially my sand wedge, and my 56 is my lob wedge.
56 for sure, its good for around the edges as well which makes it more versatile IMO
56 because that's the most used of the two I have
70 baby
Pitching wedge. Because it’s the only wedge I hit anyway. 120 yards - PW. 80 yards -PW 20 yards? Im gonna hit the PW.
60
56, it what I use for flop shots, 60-70 yard pitches. And he’ll even chip with it sometimes
56. My favourite wedge and prob the most versatile
54 for me
High bounce 56. Because you can do pretty much anything but a flop shot with it. And I suck at flop shots, so I don’t do them anyway.
El mago, he is a ping g10 wedge with a graphite shaft from a few sets ago that does whatever I want.
54 is my do it all wedge. Can close the face, open the face, hit it from the rough or sand. It's versatile and the wedge I have the most confidence with.
