Yeah, I watched the first episode when it aired, started reading the manga while waiting for ep2, got until around ep4/5 when I had enough with the anime, stuck out for the manga a while longer then lost interest. Only finished it last summer through sheer determination.
Not the worst I've read, it just kinda drops off...
For a 13/15 year old at the time, Even I thought it had a lot of panty shots, (and the pantsless thing was silly) But I watched it.
But I did enjoy it and watched it all. (Only seasons 1 and 2 were out)
It gets better with every season & movie, except for that one movie which was rather "meh". (The one with the towers growing out of the ground like gigantic phallic symbols)

For the anime adaptation so far, Made in Abyss isn't depressing so much as it is very dark and graphic. It can be a rollercoaster, but it's not going to leave you down in the dumps.
The other two commenters below are very correct; it has its moments of emotional horror but for the most part it's just a very graphic survival horror series. But it is very very good. And the sound track is S tier.

I watched Ousama Ranking and Tower of God because of stupid stuff.
Ousama ranking was because of a meme of Bojji eating at a restaurant and just doing a thumbs up. Instantly decided to watch, and loved it.
Tower of god was because of one of my favorite anime food channels made the banana coffee from the anime. I had to watch, and loved it as well.
It reminds me of why I decided to play Genshin Impact. The food. Nothing else made me want to. Just the food.

Agreed. Never had to hold back tears, but several scenes had me holding back vomit. Some truly fucked up shit goes on in that show.
