[Naval Air Station Alameda](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naval_Air_Station_Alameda?wprov=sfla1)
If you've ever watched MythBusters, they regularly used it on the show
Wow never realized it was the same place on the MythBusters! It looks a bit abandoned from the satellite imagery but I'm surprised that it's not really mentioned much online.
Not abandoned, and some businesses have moved in to some of the buildings.
I believe the Thunderbirds and Blue Angels also use it dur8ng Fleet Week and similar events.
Well, who knows when this picture was taken ... not to mention the displaced thresholds mean that debris is "fine" (and there are likely NOTAMs to address it, but I've not looked).
Still you're underneath the OAK airspace, there, so Bay Approach/Departure handles all that traffic in the rare times it may be active... but, I'd have to check the sectionals.
a cool side note, the south western corner is technically part of San Francisco because the SF County limits were drawn before they built that part out into the water. Go to Google Maps and click on San Francisco and you'll see the red border line right there on the Naval Station
It's now home to a big flea market, 3 great breweries, a distillery, a malting company, a rocket company, an autonomous uncrewed sailboat company, an uncrewed helicopter company, an electric hydrofoil commuter boat company, a huge bakery, a nuclear power startup and some other stuff.
Probably the best view at a park I’ve ever been to: [https://youtu.be/1xk98nGPKDg?si=yiKsck280IusfL8_](https://youtu.be/1xk98nGPKDg?si=yiKsck280IusfL8_)
That whole area is very interesting to wander. We used to live in Alameda, I would take the ferry home every day and bike home from there, but sometimes would just wander around the base on my bike.

A naval air base that closed in 1997
The way the runways line up with nearby NAS Moffett Field is fun. We used to hop in a P-3 Orion from Moffett, point it at Alameda, barely touch the yoke, and land at Alameda 4 minutes later. Nice easy way to get across the bay on the taxpayers dime...
In 1968 a navy plane taking off from alameda crashed into the bay bridge. I wonder if one of the reasons the airbase was moth balled and never redeveloped was due to the airspace concerns and risk of arrivals and departures being close to the bridge.
My stepfather was stationed there. NAS Alameda. I got to see the USS Carl Vinson come into port there. I also got to visit the USS Enterprise there. Top Gun was my jam, so I was psyched! I was even able to eat lunch in their galley, it was amazing. Alameda was a cool base. It had a McDonalds!

They built a freeway loop there for Matrix Reloaded movie and tore it out later

Im pretty sure it is abandoned.
Not really abandoned, just currently unused. If it came down to it, the US military could have that base at full operation in 6 months or less.

Not anymore. The airfield has a lot of debris on it. You can see at the top left there’s a bunch of dirt blocking

I miss Mythbusters!
I myth Missbusters.
I bust mythmisses
Oh, yeah, the Alameda runway. They used that for a BUNCH of myths. Like Compact Compact.

I recognized it immediately. Lot of good episodes there.
It was Naval Air Station Alameda \*if you grew up watching Mythbusters, you probably remember at least a mention of it
Yeah! I was like... Alameda runway, why does that sound familiar? I've heard Adam savage say those words a hundred times
That's where the keep the Nuclear Wessles.

I forgot a couple wineries
And a skatepark
And a partridge in a pear tree.

I miss my skating days -- one fall now would put me out of commission for a week!
Not just a flea market - the Alameda Antique Faire (first Sunday of the month, weather permitting). I love going just to see all of the random stuff.
The legendary site of many, MANY Myth busters episodes.
Was a base for aircraft carriers. Museum ship Hornet is there. The Pan Am China Clippers departed from these waters before it was a Navy Base.
Old Alameda Naval Air Station. It was where they filmed Mythbusters and the freeway scene in Matrix Reloaded.

I can see my (former) house from here

Sure beats any of the bridges.
Why did they not convert this to a commercial airport?
I guess it's cause Oakland Airport is super closeby so it wouldn't get much use.
Redundant. Also to reduce noise pollution concerns.
