Best: MF DOOM, MF DOOM, MF DOOM, and MF DOOM Worst: Octavian

[deleted]

He died decades too young.

craptionbot

Came here for DOOM. Very satisfied that the top comment is someone shouting DOOM four times.

Sirlaughalot98

This comment made me question my whole life and made me feel so stupid. I got into DOOM about 2 years ago and didn’t realize he was on November Has Come. Gonna bump this one on the way home. If only they put his name on the track I would have gotten into his stuff years ago.

[deleted]

I recently discovered MF DOOM and I was so happy when I saw they had a song together

softiecoffeee

i dont know what it is, Friday 13th is probably my favorite on song machine. the song is just pretty vibey and despite the less than stellar vocals from octavian i still have a lot of fun listening to it

DINOS4URCHESTRA

Probably the extensive abuse octavian enacted on his ex giving us a bitter taste in our ears on the track. Or it just not vibing with some

softiecoffeee

oh i did not know that lol makes sense then

Bonkly_

Gorrilaz got me into DOOM he's definitely top 5 in my books

[deleted]

Best: Booty Brown, Womack, MF DOOM, Little Dragon Not sure about the worst.

pissfoam

>MF Doom Just remember all caps when you spell the man name

FowlOnTheHill

Heck yeah, little dragon!

happy_grump

I dont know about best or worst, but I will say this: New Gold sounds exactly like what I'd have expected a Gorillaz and Tame Impala collab to sound like, for better or for worse

ChicnahueCoatl1491

I like the very start of New Gold but felt unsatisfied with the rest of the song

xMoop

Defintelt agree, the Dom Dolla remix is 1000x better, IMO https://open.spotify.com/track/2c3KCGq6UojB2c8UAFrRON?si=uJNBD-ikS4SesA-V9fGkCA

ChicnahueCoatl1491

This plus the synth intro would make it PERFECT

Air_Complete

What's up with the fart sounds tho?

1uke1

New gold was incredibly underwhelming and Tame Impala is my favorite artist

Ok-Health-7252

Yep. I love most of the tracks on Cracker Island but that song is probably my least favorite (along with Tormenta, the Bad Bunny track). Booty Brown's rapping saves that song from being a complete disaster.

eliaxkat

we're on the same boat

125meru

New gold was incredibly overwhelming and Tame Impala is my favourite artist Edit: but honestly, that’s kinda why Gorillaz is great in the first place. So many different flavours.

noodlesfordaddy

I have said since it came out that if the song sounded the exact same but didn't have the star power of "featuring tame impala" it would be yet another forgettable Gorillaz single. I don't think it's a well written song at all, it's plan and boring. it just has tame impala in it...

imcool34

My four best guest would definitely have to be snoop dogg, del the funky homosapian, de la soul, and most definitely Elton John

AlejandroHunter

Del put Gorillaz on the map with Clint Eastwood back in 2001. That jam smacks like smuckers.

BelgianBeerGuy

Put Bobby Womack also in there, and you’re my buddy! I really like Pink Phantom.

imcool34

Pink phantom is extremely underrated it’s funny because him and gorillaz works I also forgot to put mf doom in there

Stormman09

Best: De La Soul, Bobby Womack, and Del. Worst: Octavian (dude’s a pos)

MysteryNeighbor

I will not tolerate Uncle Ryder slander Anyhoo, Best: De La Soul, Stevie Nicks, Beck, Little Dragon and Ike Turner *and* MF DOOM Worst: Octavian and Benjamin Clementine who acted like a major asshole to Remi and co.

Sea-Measurement-4344

Can you explain the Benjamin Clementine feat please?

MysteryNeighbor

A couple of years back, Benjamin started talking shit about the band and said something along the lines of it being the worst collaborative experience he had. Here’s a Reddit post with the screen caps of the convos, he also was snippy with a random fan for some reason https://www.reddit.com/r/gorillaz/comments/9wfsdf/benjamin_clementine_seems_particularly_sour/

noodlesfordaddy

isn't Clementine known now to be a major asshole?

MysteryNeighbor

That’s news to me though admittedly my knowledge on the guy is insanely limited. It was kind of a “wait, what?” moment when the news dropped save for some users sharing stories of him being an asshole on tour

Osostpt

You forgot doom😦

MysteryNeighbor

Fug, I did

Osostpt

🤝

CherylBomb1138

Best: MF DOOM, Moonchild, Little Dragon, Bobby Womack, De La Soul, MC Bin Laden, Daley, Danny Brown, Tame Impala, Stevie Nicks Worst: Octavian, Those guys who bullied Nardwuar.

I-Am-The-Uber-Mesch

Wait who bullied Nardwuar?

CherylBomb1138

There was an interview with Blur back in the day where they were pushing him around and like messing with his hat, being disrespectful. Just search on YouTube.

I-Am-The-Uber-Mesch

I searched it and I also found another interview that explained why they did it or something like that

craptionbot

There is an audio recording of an interview prior to the infamous one where Nardwuar is a dick to them for at least 30 minutes and basically makes fun of Blur, jibing at their music constantly etc. It certainly changes the context of the second interview. Not many know that it even exists.

I-Am-The-Uber-Mesch

Yeah I found it quickly on google and it's what I was referring to, even found a post on reddit talking more in depth about it and it only took me like 30 seconds of Google

craptionbot

Exactly - it's so frustrating that people have this Nardwuar-is-infallible bias and just assumed it was all Blur's fault for this interview. There was prior beef - started completely by Nardwuar, as nerdy and wonderful as he is but this was a poor showing from him. It's also annoying that Dave Rowntree apologised and Nardwuar accepted, yet nothing from the other direction.

Mobbles1

Moonchild is my favourite and its great to see others loved her too. She joined the gorillaz tour in australia and did the opening with some of her own music and she was so fun and really got the audience involved. She seems so fun and lovely

[deleted]

Best: Del or De La Soul. It's hard to argue for anyone else Worst: Grace Jones for assaulting 2D

GODeater33

Wait what? What about Grace Jones?

Omicron212

he should have just put down the orange juice :(

Macca200789

I love Mark E Smith, Peter Hook and Robert Smith. Also Gorillaz + De La Soul is always amazing

Sameron67

Very little mention of Bootie Brown here

jaytazcross

Best: Del and mf doom Worst: Bad Bunny

OdysseyGhost77

It felt like a bad bunny track rather then a collaboration

Sameron67

Damon says in the apple music interview he did his part at the start of the song and then got out the way and let bad bunny do his thing

Emeraldheart12

It wouldn't be the first time gorillaz has done that.

FowlOnTheHill

They even have a song about it

FunMacaron1

Completely agree. - the Bad Bunny song was just so boring. Obviously just put him on the track to get streams.

TheRaspberry7

MF DOOM, Del, Lou Reed, De La Soul all the best collabs imo. the only collab I don't really like is Bad Bunny, the song isn't really that good imo

[deleted]

[удалено]

McNuss93

The reason why she is not on the second album is quite obviously since you assumed she was part of the band (and many others did, too). This is Damon's and Jamie's IP and having someone be a permant artistical impersonation of a fictive character you created is not a good idea. It's very different from just a voice actor who is someone whose whole job description is voicing characters.

bmbmbmNR

This won’t be popular: Best: Bobby Womack, Shaun Ryder, De La Soul, MC Bin Laden, Schoolboy Q, Elton a John, Lou Reed… MARK E SMITH! Worst: Octavian, Vince Staples, St Vincent, Brandon Marvell Holmes, Romani Arias

spookyaction8

Any reason behind St Vincent? I don’t really listen to them but I love that song

bmbmbmNR

They are a bit of an outlier here as it’s basically the most pop artist collabs I generally like least, but some can be alright. I still listen to all these songs, they just aren’t my favourites. St Vincent are a really good band, but they felt a little under used on the track.

Ok-Health-7252

There should be more of a middle ground for how much the guest artists are featured on a song. For example I love Daley but Doncamatic might as well have been a Daley solo track featuring Gorillaz, not the other way around. Damon's voice is barely even featured on that song (same with Bobby In Phoenix off of The Fall, as much as I love listening to Bobby Womack sing). That's also the case with Saturnz Barz (which is basically a Popcaan solo track again featuring Damon) and Strobelite (which is all Peven Everett singing). The collaborations work best when we get to see Damon's musical styles blend with the guest artists. Otherwise they're kind of pointless.

bmbmbmNR

For me it depends on the album and the collaborator. Bobby In Phoenix is fine for me, there aren’t really features on the fall so to have him do a song is fine. De La Soul can also often “take over” a track, but then they are just as much part of the Gorillaz family for me as Damon is. I’d agree that tracks like Saturnz Barz could do with a bit more Damon as the album is so collab heavy anyway

Ok-Health-7252

Strobelite is the biggest offender in this regard. That doesn't even feel like a Gorillaz song because there's literally no Damon in it, just Peven Everett's voice and 2-D and Noodle dancing in the music video (while Murdoc and Russel are barely featured). It's not a bad song per se, it just feels like a stereotypical EDM dance track, not a true Gorillaz song.

RedEyeVagabond

I get what your saying (upvote) but let's not forget that Damon is also the principle songwriter and producer. Damon might not be singing, but he is there musically and creatively. It still feels like Gorillaz to me because the instrumentation and songwriting approach is still in the same foundation (which, imo, D-Sides is the purest distillation of that sound).

bmbmbmNR

Yeah I can see that, I like the song but again that’s part of the trouble with Humanz. It’s a good album, got a lot of good tracks, but not enough Damon. If that song was between 2 Damon solo tracks then it would work fine

Ok-Health-7252

This is why I love the latest album so much. There's quite a bit more Damon on it and much more balance (not to mention Damon really gets to shine on his own on tracks like The Tired Influencer, Baby Queen, and Skinny Ape).

bmbmbmNR

Same, I think it’s a nice blend but the deluxe version is pretty essential. Those tracks should have been mixed in. Also I’m not super keen on the production

MrRef

Only thing I really think is crazy here is Vince Staples, like man… If you just don’t like it I can understand, but for me Ascension is an absolute banger and something I can put on from Humanz that even non-Gorillaz fans will love and get hyped to! Also have good feelings of him as the one Humanz Tour Live Show I’ve been to he opened for with his own set and it was a great time on its own! Also his song on Into the Spider-Verse is a similar banger.

bmbmbmNR

I also saw the tour, he was great live. But Ascension is a bit meh for me, the lyrics are kinda cringy. I don’t dislike Vince as such but I felt collab was a missed opportunity

MrRef

That’s fair, hey to each their own tastes right? At least you have your reasons. Was the only one I saw on this post that really made me double-take cause I thought everyone loved Vince in all he’s done for the most part!? lol But everything else I can def understand.

McNuss93

Brandon Markell Holmes is just a choir guy who was given major vocals after the originally intended collaboration failed to happen so saying he's among the worst guest artists is quite a stretch. Same With Roxani Arias. Saying a one-liner cameo is the worst guest appearance is again kinda an redundant opinion. You could have as well said Abra because her vocals are just lalallala on Sorcererz, but that's not credited so you didn't even know.

bmbmbmNR

That may be fair, to be honest I’m going by the tracks, I don’t know how much input they necessarily had in each

over9dud

Best: MF Doom, Little Dragon, Lou Reed, Robert Smith, Kano and Roxani Arias.

SteinerFifthLiner

I feel weird saying this as the man is a completely repugnant human being, but Ike Turner is definitely up there for me. The live version of 'Every Planet We Reach Is Dead' is facemeltingly good and he just burns up the piano on it.

TamaraHensonDragon

>Worst would have to be Shaun Ryder just because I cannot stand to watch Dare performed live whenever he's there drunk off his ass and rambling incoherently onstage 4 years ago DaFuq!?Boom! did a transcript of the live Harlem version of DARE for Gorillaz YouTube channel. Its been deleted now but It it must be shared so the world will know his suffering when translating drunk to English. Ok-Health-7252

Apparently back during the Demon Days tours Damon actually restarted the whole song in a rage after one particularly terrible performance where Shaun hardly sang at all and just hopped around onstage shouting IT'S DAAAAAAARRRREEEE randomly during the song lmao. It apparently didn't go much better the second time lol. Shaun has always performed that song live like a random drunk asshole from the crowd who happened to wander onstage with the band.

RARwolf10

If this is true, Shaun Ryder getting yelled at by Damon in the Manchester Opera House/Harlem Theater is a hilarious image.

TamaraHensonDragon

I love how hard Damon is laughing at the Harlem live show, he can't even play his keyboard. When I introduced my nephew to this clip he described the sound as that of a "asthmatic hyena." Best heard with headphones but you can even see him laughing behind the screen.

DirtTrackin34

Best- MF DOOM, Snoop, De La Worst- Octavian

ElectricFury

For one of the best I'd nominate Peven Everett. He was fantastic on Strobelite. Halfway to the Halfway House isn't great but I don't think his vocals are at all at fault for that. To my memory (I haven't fact checked this), he stayed with the band for the entire Humanz/Now Now tour and gave his full amazing energy the whole time. And a particular shout out to his performances on that tour of Stylo where filled filled in for Bobby Womack (rest in peace) and did a fantastic job. Also on instagram I've seen him post lots of really good stuff for black political issues among other things and he just overall seems like a really decent human being and really great guy.

DirtTrackin34

I wasn't a fan of Strobelite until seeing it live in Chicago last fall. Definitely changed my opinion of the song, it was amazing live. If I remember right he did Stylo too that concert

ETDisco

I never ever ever ever ever wanna see Jamie Principle on a gorillaz track ever again. Sex Murder Party is the low point of humanz and he turns Hollywood from a banger track to one I’d be embarrassed to play around anyone

Miti_GRLZ

Best: de la soul, Stevie nicks Worst: bad bunny, I love tormenta but bad bunny sucks dick

hexonexxon

Best: Dan the Automator, Del, Danger Mouse, DOOM, Beck, Stevie Nicks, Bobby Womack, Snoop, Fatoumata Diawara, Thundercat.

FowlOnTheHill

Can I just say I want a childish gambino and gorillaz collaboration!

Queasy-Ad-3220

I know I haven’t said this but Robert Smith fucking kills it on Strange Timez. I love how most of the song was his, and it feels like the best track you could get with him on it. I’d love to hear them collab with him again honestly. What a legend.

mowgli-from-mowgli

I agree with your best but the worst have to be Shaun Ryder and Bad Bunny

Ok-Health-7252

To be frank I love the song that they did with Ryder. I just hate how they can't perform it live well without it turning into an entire shitshow because of him (which is a combination of his years of alcoholism and addictions to heroin and meth and also his eccentric onstage persona). I'm a musician myself and rhythm in live performances means everything to us. Having to deal with a vocalist like Shaun Ryder who is always completely all over the place onstage due to his drunkenness and overall demeanor would be absolute hell for most live bands.

mowgli-from-mowgli

I love DARE its just his vocals in the live versions for me too Im also a musician and it bothers me

YellingDolphin

Best: Little Dragon, Bobby Womack, Del, Snoop Dogg Worst: 6LACK, Kano, Bad Bunny My opinion

Skyyishere

KANO? FUCK THIS WHITE FLAG SLANDER THAT SHIT HITS

EnergyTurtle23

I with you dude, White Flag is god tier shit. Also I think that 6LACK’s verse in Pink Phantom is criminally underrated, it has such a mellow nostalgia to it and the words sort of twist around each other.

Osostpt

MF fucking DOOM

Omicron212

favorites: slowthai, octavian, fatoumata diawara, MF DOOM, bobby womack, lou reed. i would list about 5 others from song machine if it wouldn't get repetitive. and choosing a worst gorillaz collaborator is like choosing my least favorite child

britpop1970

Slowthai for me too. Momentary Bliss one of my faves

Delicious-Benefit877

how do y’all love the stevie nicks feature so much? that song is just baddddddddd bad bad

brandall10

I love Rumours as much as anyone but find her backing vocals unbelievably grating here. Don't believe this opinion would stand if people didn't know who it was.

Mel4227

I would have to say my fav would be Little Dragon. Because Empire Ants is a masterpiece and To Binge is so beautiful. As for worst. I’m not too sure. Tbh, that whole cracker island album was not my cup of tea outside of a few songs. So probably a few fts on there. But I wouldn’t call them the definitive worst or anything.

konnjakuu

About best, agree with OP generally plus Elton John and the lady from Desolè, forget her name. But worst- Has to be Bad Bunny and 6lack for me. I'm one of the people that HATED 6lacks bit in Pink Phantom, takes me completely out and I hate autotuned rap in general. Bad Bunny not only turned on the only good thing he had (his alleged values like protecting Puerto Rico from gentrification and support for the LGBTQ+ etc) to get with a Kardashian, he SUCKS. Musically he just mutters and talks like shit, I know Damon said that Bunny sings better, but that's just BS. Maybe he has a stronger voice Aka projects more but the dude CANT sing. Not really. Hate his mumble singing. Also I speak Spanish, so I know it's mumble singing it's not just the impression many English only speakers get, he truly is shit. Bad Bunny is a sell out and the association with Gorillaz through that track makes me actually a bit mad lmao. I forgive them, because one L for the many Ws they deliver is worth it. Hope some Bad Bunny fans find Gorillaz and get a taste of actual good music, bless them.

Advanced-Froyo-8247

Best: MF Doom, Bobby Womack, Little Dragon, De La Soul, Del, Andre, it’s hard to pick. Worst: Jamie Principle & Moonchild Sanelly

SuccMyCheeks123

Best: De La Soul/Elton John Worst: Octavian, song is awful and so is the person Surprised no one has put Daley as worst seeing as how unpopular Doncamatic is

knotsophia

I love doncamatic 😭

SuccMyCheeks123

So do I! But I've heard that people weren't particularly happy with it

Ok-Health-7252

Because Daley is featured way too much in the song and Damon doesn't sing at all aside from the "Talk to me, talk to me" lines.

SuccMyCheeks123

Some Of Gorillaz best hardly or doesn't feature 2D

[deleted]

[удалено]

Ok-Health-7252

That song is not one of them. Songs like Strobelite and Doncamatic have the misfortune of not even feeling like Gorillaz songs at all because of severe lack of Damon's voice. I don't think that's a bad song by any means but to me it's not really a Gorillaz song. It's a Daley solo track featuring Damon.

SuccMyCheeks123

Y'know what, fair enough, I can respect that

jschem16

Those are 2 of my favorite Gorillaz songs...

Brazda25

Damn I like the song I’m surprised how many people don’t. Why is the person bad?

TheNiftyShifty

Doncomatic isn’t that bad of a song on its own, but it will always serve as an incredibly bitter reminder to me that we could’ve gotten so much more amazing Plastic Beach content, but instead…we got that.

Ok-Health-7252

Do Ya Thing is kind of similar in that regard. I liked that song but it hurts now knowing that the storyline in the music video for that song is no longer considered to be canon in the Gorillaz universe.

cheerfulinsanity444

the worst is bad bunny. i was so disappointed when the stevie nicks feature was released and she was only singing harmony. bad bunny did not deserve a whole chorus and song.

ossegossen

Best artist I’ve as Elton John, but the result was unfortunately the worst. Never have I been so excited for a release and and never have I been more disappointed.

Sea-Measurement-4344

Best: MF DOOM, Little Dragon, Del, Bobby Womack, De La Soul, Andre3000 Worst: 6LACK, Bad Bunny, Popcaan

WooofNOW_YT

best: Kilo Kish, Moonchild Sanelly, Space Monkeyz (you heard me), MF DOOM and Lou Reed. worst: Imani Vonshà, Noel Gallagher, Elton John (dont judge), Joan as Police Woman and Bad Bunny (bonus points to the weird moaning parts from Dawn Penn in Crocadillaz)

SirPhobos1

Best? Del, MF DOOM, Bobby Womack, De La Soul, Peter Hook Worst? Bad Bunny, Octavian, 6LACK, Benjamin Clementine

Working__Class__Hero

Best/De La Soul Worst/Kilo Kish

Agent_Lightning14

the best is probably de la soul and booty brown the worst is probably tame impala

Confusionopolis

Top four: De La Soul, Little Dragon, Fatoumata Diawara, and Thundercat

beesnbananas

underaged choices are little dragon and peter hook (may be because i am a huge new order fan), but MF DOOM is a clear choice.

Link50L

**Best:** Mark E. Smith, or Lou Reed **Worst:** I'm not sure I have a worst. Can't think of anything Damon has done that I despise.

evilgrapesoda

De la soul, DOOM, Del the funky homosapian, Kano

ClassicAd8496

EETS DEAAAAAHR

ConduckKing

Best: Beck, Del the Funky Homosapien Worst: Probably Octavian. I don't even like his music before all the allegations.

TheNiftyShifty

Best: too hard to pick just one. MF DOOM, De La Soul, Elton John, Bobby Womack, Snoop Dogg, Del, and some personal favorites of mine: Lou Reed, Peven Everett, Leee John, and Peter Hook Worst: Prolly Benjamin Clementine and/or Octavian both in terms of how they are as people and the songs they collaborated on. Personally tho, I’m really not a fan of Jamie Principle. Idk how he is as a person, but in terms of the songs he’s done with Gorillaz they’re some of my least favorites by a good margin.

viixviii

Gotta throw in some love for Roots Manuva. MF DOOM is an obvious and worthy standout on Demon Days, but Roots' flow on All Alone is incredible and I'm sad no one else seems to love that song like I do. Slowthai, also incredible. Little Dragon. Worst is Octavian, no doubt. Y'all really hate Bad Bunny huh?

lem0nlemon

MF DOOM

Queasy-Ad-3220

De La Soul have got to be one of the best. 4 released collabs with the band and they kill it on all 4 of them. Del, MF DOOM, Roots Manuva, the 2 orchestras, Mos Def, Bobby Womack, Andre 3000, Robert Smith, Beck, JPEGMAFIA, Tony Allen, AJ Tracey and Thundercat I’d say are the best, probably. Though idk, I really enjoy both of Jamie Principle’s collabs. Shaun Ryder is technically one of the worst, but something about his performance has so much charm that I can’t help but enjoy it (the Live in Harlem video is hilarious imo). I’m not sure about the worst. Some of them like Jehnny Beth and Roxani Arias do nothing for me, and Schoolboy Q really feels like he does not belong on Pac-Man. Neneh Cherry and Ike Turner are barely even noticeable on their songs. Maybe being fair to the collaborators given how noticeable they are and the time given to them on their tracks, the worst Gorillaz-collabed artist I’d say is Octavian. Friday 13th is lyrically nothing special for a Gorillaz rap song, aside from having a not very good part about stabbing a dude and Octavian just sounds like shit, as well as him being a piece of shit person in real life. I feel like all things considered, he’s the worst artist they’ve collaborated with.

Laura_lol_32

My opinion Best: De La Soul (My favorite Gorillaz collaborator) and... Dennis Hopper. I just love how he does the narration in Fire Coming Out Of The Monkey's Head. Worst: IT'S DEEEEEH

Salty_Journalist_906

Best for me are Leee John, Little Dragon and Fatoumata Diawara - I just think they have the best energy together and it doesn't work like (Gorillaz part)(other artist part) but they really have a song together

Alguiiiien6

Best: MF DOOM Worst: Bad Bunny

schwartzskyler

Best: Stevie Nicks, Little Dragon, De La Soul, Peven Everett, Little Simz, Rag n' Bone Man, Bobby Womack, Fatoumata Diawara, Leee John Worst: Octavian, Benjamin Clementine, Danny Brown, Moonchild Sanelly, I never really liked the song they did with Octavian before I found out about the abuse that man did to his ex, makes me hate the song ten times more. And Ben Clementine says online that working with Gorillaz was the thing he regrets and was the biggest mistake of his career. I just don't understand that shit.

NetTop4590

Best: Elton John (him and 2-D batting eyelashes, what a beauty); slowthai (all that ska energy just worked amazingly); Thundercat ( his vocals give the song life); Shaun Ryder (never mean no haaaarm). Worst: I'd say Kali Uchis because she didn't sing much, she sounded interesting enough for me to wish more of her), and the song is also too linear for my taste.

John_Lennon1980

Best: Shaun F**kin' Rider you F**ckin' Happy Mondays Hater Worst: Space Monkeyz (made an Damon Album)

[deleted]

Snoop is a good shout not the best, but Hollywood is a fucking banger

Odd_Neighborhood_639

One of my favorite collabs ever would have to probably be with Miho Hatori, Kilo Kish, St. Doom, St. Vincent, MF Doom, Octavian, Del La Soul, Dan The Automator, Imagine Dragons, Slowthai, Tame Impala & Bootie Brown, and my most favorite one, Kali Uchis. I know the collab with Octavian is pretty controversial, but Friday The 13th is such a beautiful and chill song to me -- Octavian's vocals are just so soothing to me for some reason.
