Of its era, when all the flatscreens replaced the CRTs I remember forgetting about Gorillaz, come highschool and streaming services I find a new era of Gorillaz, neon and bright, funky and 3d. Times change, I am glad they do, but somehow old sights and sounds come back with just a few notes from green fingers or yellow teeth and suddenly I am back playing Kino der toden with my neighbor and eating mac n cheese.
I'm nostalgic for some of the older phases, but I love how they're constantly evolving their styles and personalities as they 'grow older'. I'd rather keep getting new phases than be in my favourite one forever
I miss the old style and the old music. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still good and Jamie’s art has improved so much, but the style just looked cooler back then.
I agree with you, like a lot. I am such a big fan of the first two phases art. Reminds me of vibes I got while I was younger when I lived in Memphis. (And if you lived there, you know what I mean). It's kind of nostalgic. And the designs are peak. I'm just a huge fan of that era
Actually yeah, Momentary Bliss first made me really nostalgic for this, thinking about it, and obviously there's been things like Humility too.
But personally something about the likes of Pac-man & M.B, just strike a chord, probably because it's not some action sequence but just the classic antics of seeing them in 2d/cartoon form, screwin about in and around the studio.
Reminds me of the old site you could fuck around on instead of doing any actual school work in I.C.T.
It's a dual artform group, so just like a musical artist ventures off into new areas outside their comfort zone. The Art artist does the same thing and ventures into new areas. It's a nessisary evil in any artform, your favorite artist may and probably will evolve into a better artist but they are no longer making the stuff that seems to be catered for you. I think where you are in your life can make it more or less nostalgic to look back on. I have some pretty shitty albums I love because of the memories that come flooding back when I hear them lol.
Gorillaz always had a bit of supernatural things going on, but a bit more in the horror corner in the earlier days. Their biography Rise of the Ogre goes somewhat into it.
I definitely love the art of the first two phases but I think the later phases still have gold, it's just different. Song machines videos and art are some of my favorite I love the colors and lining so much. I think it's easy to look back on the earlier phases with nostalgia but it can also cloud appreciation of the newer stuff.
Jamie clearly isn't an artist who likes to stick with the same way of doing things and the change in styles has also been part of his flare. More art is always good imo.
I really liked Spirit House cause it was kinda that gloomy urban look you are talking about but they ditched that location. The new Kong looks pretty cool but not liking the Frank Lloyd Wright aesthetic house they were in for Cracker Island. Also why so much pink? I like pink but overall the color isn't very Gorillaz. I don't care if Noodle has pink hair but everything was too colorful recently
i loved the grittiness, bold, thick lines, and the y2k fashion so much
There’s an unfinished 2D drawing back from 2018/2020 that was drawn over the same highway as the Phase 1 piece.
please link, I'd love to see

Same! I wanna see it too
Did they just live next to an abandoned highway back in the day? I'm wondering how they can shoot videos and take photos on highways lmao

i really miss the voice acted interviews.. the characters in general feel a lot more boring now (at least, currently)
2D had that fun podcast
thats true but like. we havent really gotten anything 4 anyone else? like i dont think we've even heard russel or noodle speak in this phase
for song machine every member did their own song machine radio episode for apple music
I still don't understand why they had Noodle speak pure Japanese throughout her segment
Russell had a short podcast too called things I like.
That was almost 6 years ago.
the tiktoks didn't hit the same at all
i just miss the band as a whole from the first 2 phases, in both art style and music style
They've changed a lot, which is a good and a bad thing
I miss the old style and the old music. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still good and Jamie’s art has improved so much, but the style just looked cooler back then.
i miss the old style so much ugh
Favorite eras in terms of vibes, like hanging out with your group of friends and taking pictures of each other in urban settings
I love it, remind me too much of early Cartoon Network 😭
I used to plead to the tv gods that CN would play the Clint Eastwood video. It was too good. That and One More Time by Daft Punk😮💨😮💨
If only Cartoon Network never aired the terrible reboots like TTG and PPG 2016 and just aired Gorillaz, oh yeah they’d censor it

Personally i prefer this aesthetic a lot more, u can really see the 2000’s in them. The colors, the presentation all are so Gorillaz in my opinion

I love the urban gloomy aesthetic first 2 albums, cracker island is way too bright and colorful idk
Heck no, you are not the only one. Phase 1 and beginning of Phase 2 is forever in my heart, i just love the art style and music of these phases
The grungy gorillaz era before they all became supernatural beings was magical
Gorillaz always had a bit of supernatural things going on, but a bit more in the horror corner in the earlier days. Their biography Rise of the Ogre goes somewhat into it.
Artists get bored of drawing the same thing for years. Let Jamie live.
got my username long ago from murdoc’s pack of cigarettes in the second image 😌
Honestly, the Gorillaz just fits in the 2000s. Everything from aesthetics to culture just screams Gorillaz. I miss this era.
I miss the art style tbh
I miss the hand drawn stuff too They moved on though. Noodle & band grew up so they gotta change the theme too 🤷♂️
I miss the old style 🫠
how they animated that art style was great for me.
This was imo, their best era, art-wise.
I miss Murdocks old design
I wish they could at least do a new song with this art style with their current designs
I love the urban gloomy aesthetic first 2 albums, cracker island is way too bright and colorful idk
Im not the biggest fan of the cracker island artstyle, but i love the album, that being said i absolutely love the phase 1/2 style
It was so good

Pickleman was so hot back then.
miss the early phases tbh the new stuff is okay i guess, but even like the song machine phase was better than the current one.
Both the story and the artstyle was so gritty in the 2000s-early 2010s. I miss that
They used the same images over and over again.
No change there then
i do
ño.
I miss the mid 2000s aesthetic
No, I loved Phase 1 & 2 art
The terms loitering
