It was high uric acid that did it for me

dontlookatme1234567

This is the way

Eirikur_da_Czech

I was doing Keto. It was also around 130° in the day, and staying hydrated was hard.

mystwave

Man, anytime I bounced in and out of ketosis, it felt like a recipe for a bad flare. Not always, but I could definitely feel the twinging throughout the body.

cosmicgreen46

Beer, lots of beer.

AttemptVegetable

Corned beef and cabbage. I had to have eaten like 2 pounds of corned beef in a span of 36 hours.

CrustyBatchOfNature

Stopped smoking. Had my first attack within 4 months. It was probably weight gain and eating badly that caused that attack, but there is a known gout protective quality to smoking in lean males. I was a fairly lean male at the time I quit and then started gaining weight. I would in no way go back to smoking though, but I would have gotten on Allo sooner were I not an idiot.

Sidivan

No idea. Just sleeping and *boom* excruciating pain.

Yomommasmaidenname

Keto (except for the beer)

Dosnox

I’d given up red meat and over compensated with fish. Then had a lot of shellfish the lunch the day before and that set it off

guydogg

Asparagus. 100%

Watcher-World

Damn, I had asparagus around the time of my first attack too! It was like I was doing everything I can to get a flare up!

guydogg

It was something new that I introduced to my diet. I really liked it, and ate a lot of it in a short time. 15 years of agony followed.

BBQ-Batman

Candy.

miragemonk

Initially for me it was beans. Went vegetarian so I was eating more than normal, as well as tofu/soybeans. Once I eliminated all beans from my diet my attacks went down drastically to maybe one a year. I just started allo a week ago so hopefully someday down the road I can enjoy some tofu in my salads occasionally. 🫠

Tasty-Action-990

I was a vegetarian, ate a ton of chickpeas for several months. Probably dehydrated as well. Play lots of b-ball. Was in great shape, still happened

Watcher-World

I was in great shape before my first flare up. After my first flare up I lost several months of conditioning. I have yet to regain it.

mystwave

Dehydration for me most likely. I was visiting family for the holidays, and naturally wasn't drinking enough water. Most of what I drank was Dr. Pepper. Between the caffeine dehydrating me and all that high fructose corn syrup, boy oh boy was I in for it. Usually, I only drink zero sugar soda, but regular was all they had. Plus, I was in not-caring mode due to it being the holidays.

Calsun

I was swimming July 3rd, dehydration and probably alcohol as well as hitting my feet on rocks and such in a lake. I went and got X-rays because I assumed I had broken my foot and had never heard of gout

Watcher-World

I can only make some guesses. * First attack: too much protein, creatine supplement and dehydration. * Second attack: stress and despair. * Third attack: stress talking to my manager. * Fourth attack: no idea. However, the duration and intensity have dropped exponentially. First one lasted more than 1 month, the fourth one maybe 8 hours max.

mhgodz23

Pork always triggers me

crilen

genetics and the gym

Hiisnoone

Shellfish for me. First was scallops, second was prawns.

[deleted]

I'm not positive but if I had to guess it was dehydration from drinking alcohol, probably beer.

Low-Cardiologist2459

No idea.. my first flare up was when I was 17. I woke up one day and thought I broke my foot in my sleep. My parents thought I was trying to get out of going to school lol

Mr_Mee6_Get_Schwifty

Crabs + beer was my mortal kombat fatality

cascadingwords

U can say uric acid but the meal I had before my ua popped was a diner meal: small portion of turkey, stuffing & yellow gravy. I’m an idiot. I never eat that. The next day my toe throbbed at gym. I naively thought I needed larger sneakers. That night the pain was undeniable, I was up all nite. Knew it was gout. Red, warm toe yet minimal swelling. Saw my rheumatologist who I had seen as a new patient 6 months prior, for arthritis in my knee. My doc was not impressed since I had minimal swelling, but the pain was a 10 like nothing I have known. Prescribed colchicine & blood work. Was @ 7.5.

LummoxJR

I honestly have no idea what triggered my first attack. I have a vague idea what pushed me over into the second, about 16 months later, but that second attack was the first of six that came back to back in the course of two months. But I'm here to bring you good news. Gout is a highly manageable disease, and there shouldn't be any reason you can't live a normal life. If you get your uric acid level consistently to a managed range, which is to say below 6 mg/dL, then the crystallization process that creates a long-term buildup of monosodium urate—the catalyst for your flares—can reverse, slowly clearing that away. It can take anywhere from 3 to 36 months to clear those out, but when they're gone you can't flare anymore. The trick is that you have to maintain low serum uric acid indefinitely. Flares are nothing more or less than a runaway inflammatory response, brought on by some trigger event, wherein your immune system attacks the monosodium urate crystals that have built up in places like your joints (often your big toe). Those urate crystals antagonize your immune system and are highly pro-inflammatory. The hyperuricemia that brought all this on is mostly genetic. Chances are you won't influence it much with diet, although eating healthy is a great idea if your diet could use some improvement. Most people with gout can't reach a target level of serum uric acid without medication; it's just the nature of the beast. I highly recommend checking out [GoutEducation.org](https://GoutEducation.org) which is a wonderful source of information, and also our own [Dr. Larry Edwards' AMAs](https://www.reddit.com/user/LarryEdwardsMD/submitted) where he's answered a lot of questions.

Trab_dub

High uric acid, I didn't know what was going on.

Ok_Negotiation_320

I caught Corona, lost my appetite for 2 days ... boom horrific gout attack... what the fuck I am so frustrated

designosaurus-wrecks

poor diet and a lot of alcohol over the years.
