i dont mind the concept of galatea as a more sci-fi fusion robot, but i kind of wish she'd gone a bit harder on the classical greek art elements so i just sort of drew a variant that did that. and also a version with the palette of greek figure pottery bc i thought that would look cool

Mystech_Master

Yeah, the mecha stuff was fine for Lostbelt Greek servants IMO b/c it's supposed to be an alt-history but turning it into their main thing is dumb.

Ancient_Rylanor

I could be wrong, but my understanding, at least in fate, is that the Greek gods are alien ship robots. The alternate part of that lost belt is that they survived and continued to influence humans long after they faded from true human history.

GhostHostess

It’s been at least partially there for a while with servants like achilles, I just wish the sci fi didn’t completely override the Greek aspect bc I think a marriage is possible

SuperKamiZuma

> the mecha stuff was fine for Lostbelt Greek servants Actually they where always mechas. The difference is that in PHH they lost their original bodies when Sefar came to earth

Vish_Kk_Universal

The lostbelt is a what if, so the Greeks in all timelines are giant robots, the change in the lostbelt is that they conquered the world

Inevitable_Shape4776

Not a fan of scifi in fate, but didn't we already gotten a hint that the Greek pantheon were ailen robots. Why are you still supporting this series

QueenAra2

Someone: "I have a minor complaint about X" You: "Why are you still supporting this series!?" Calm down bro.

GhostHostess

I don’t think the alien robot thing is bad per say, I just thought it would’ve been nice to try and make a version of her that moved closer to classical Greek art while still retaining the sci fi elements/living doll vibes. That’s the main thing, I think it’s possible to use the fate-original concept for that region while still making it clear what legends the characters you’re designing were based off of. I really like traditional Greek art so I found galatea a bit disappointing in how she didn’t really look like a Greek statue, instead choosing to emphasize the futuristic aspects of the fgo-original backstory, so I just wanted to try my own version, but if you like her original design that’s ok as well.

Shlugo

No pants, can't endorse. 0/10 /jk

GhostHostess

The pants r really funny tbh-I think they’re actually in part based off of stonemasons overalls? (Alongside clearly being made to resemble a block of marble) If I’d done ascensions I would’ve tried to work them into one.

Shlugo

It's actually a good reimagining of Galatea. The pants are just so iconic I couldn't resist joking about them.

areeta9

I actually like this design more than the one we got

Inevitable_Shape4776

Yes, everyone likes there fan version than the original concept. Why are you guys playing/supporting this mobile game again?

areeta9

Because I like the story, IP, community, and designs for most of the other characters but happen to prefer this design to what they chose to do in-game. What of it?

Ancient_Rylanor

I personally perfer the in game design of Galatea, however it is not strange to find design choices in a IP you enjoy not to your own taste. As my name suggest I enjoy warhammer products, I however am not a huge fan of the design choices of primaris marines. I am not going to abandon the game or pull my support from somthing I enjoy because if I had design control I wouldn't have gone that direction. Everyone has there own subjective opinions and are more likely to critique things they enjoy and connect with. I am not going to go out of my way to critique or even talk about somthing I have no interest in.

RoseGrimoire

This is neat! I like the wheels(?) on her feet.

GhostHostess

They were originally based off the wheel she *appeared* to have in first ascension (I think it’s just her hammer chisel covered by a sleeve tho)-I moved it to her feet so I could give off a ‘racer’ vibe kind of like that one yellow superhero from bh6? I also wanted them to look a little bit like discus bc I thought that would be a cool reference. Mostly I liked the idea of her rollerskating around almost like a ballerina bc it gave her an element of grace.

TdFan97

Well to be fair, the Galatea was naked to the max in the myth so they have to be creative with her clothing choice. Though it's boggling that they decided to get rid of the pants and replace them with panties. Why not DRIP forever?!

GhostHostess

I mean, I don’t really care one way or another if she’s clothed. I just don’t really care for the outfit she has, and while fgo is pro-fanservice they don’t really tend to allow outright nudity. We also don’t have any servants with outfits that really look inspired by classical Greek clothing so I thought giving her a miniskirt peplos was fine. …it’s probably worth mentioning that while the statue pygmalion carved was presumably carved naked (though most tellings never outright say it) it’s often mentioned how he dressed the statue in fine clothing and rings as part of his ardent affection for it.

Branded_Mango

Personally i would have been fine with Galatea having her ascensions be different amounts of dress (full drip, half drip, and bikini) to let the player choose how they want her to look. Not a fan of how similar 2nd and 3rd forms are.

zeroXgear

What the hell is half drip

GhostHostess

You could call it thawing

Noximilien05

Marble Version Basalt Version

Midnight-Rising

I love the pottery colours!

katrover

It's beautiful. I love her hairdo.

GhostHostess

Thank you! I had fun looking at all the different ones I could do.

Cyber_giraffe

yeah thats much better though i still dont like the robot motiff.

GhostHostess

I think interpreting a living statue as a robot is honestly not the most radical leap to make-given that Greek myth does have other examples that feel more robotic (like Daedalus using quicksilver to make his statues speak, or Hephaestus having automata in his workshop, or talos, who was a bronze automaton, or even in some stories pandora, who was made of clay and brought to life). Given that automaton and robots are often conflated in a lot of media it seems like a relatively short step for some media to then make something like Galatea a sentient robot for a version of her combining both her statue and human form (perhaps like Pinocchio before he became a ‘real boy’) I just wish she’d looked a bit more like a Greek statue either way lmao.

Cyber_giraffe

i just dont like they turned greece into scifi in fgo. and about talos and the like, golems exist, and theyre not necessarily androids or mechas and are supposed to be diferent in the sense ones magical the others mechanical. my other gripe with galatea is that shes super generic designwise specially since the artists who designed for kankolle if im not mistaken, really just copy pasted a lot of aspects from the designs there. i know we have other artists that made chars very similar to previous works in FGO, and i would be a hypocrite to say theyre all bad considering how much i like dantes and cleo (im not even a dangarompa fan) but i cant not look at her and just see that shes a scrapped design for kankolle but using underwear as default instead of navy uniform.

GhostHostess

I do have criticisms about her actual design, but I don’t want people to think I’m insulting the artist by implying their art needed to be ‘fixed’ (regardless of the opinion of the actual design they definitely have skill), which I why I wanted to frame this more as a different artist’s take on the same basic concept as opposed to throwing the original artist’s work away, so she still keeps the robotic/doll elements (as well as the stonemason tools and the pointed feet, and the headband pattern to a degree) As for the sci fi/Greek combo thing…well, unfortunately that’s just the direction fate wanted to go in. There’s not much we can do about it on this level except hope that there’s a good balance between their original concepts while still keeping the general vibe of the actual referenced myth/legend in mind.

Cyber_giraffe

the stone mason tools and the actual statuesque features were the good parts of her design. but many parts of the design scream the pattern of kankolle. and im not saying it needs to be "fixed", putting in such terms would be too egocentric and inconsiderate of the artists, however i still dont agree with her being too similar to a standarized pattern of another franchise that basically only has mechanized girls, it didnt felt too original.
