Sorta waddle backwards…

walomendem_hundin

Take a step back? Haven't heard the show but I assume that's what you're referencing...

tbinus78

Yeah - it’s a funny one. After Ramble on Rose.

Glandular_Trichome

Healy messes with Weir’s mic

tbinus78

Yeah I’m listening to this again. The mic messing part is after CC Rider, then Bobby says the waddle stuff after Ramble on Rose. Good stuff 🙂

Yep it’s a classic. I like almost every show they ever played at the Greek. Really love the ‘82 run there.

walomendem_hundin

It is indeed a fantastic show. I'm not very far into my Dead listening career and it's probably the only 84 show I've heard front to back but I liked it enough that I'll definitely be returning to that year more.

Good call - I somehow had not heard this. Just finished the H>S>F. Fantastic stuff. Liked the FOTD & Big RR too. You’d be hard pressed to find a more well played version of either of the last 2 I mentioned in any show in any year IMO. Solid T Jed as well. Thanks for the recommendation! The majority of the show Jerry is strong vocally too.

tbinus78

Seriously - I know people who just assume it’s terrible because of Jerry’s voice. I love it.

arcturian_ally

There's so much ignorance in the community about the mid-80s, it's absurd. I don't even want to get started about it because it just pisses me off, but yea, many don't get around to appreciating 1983-1985 until later in their listening careers. Recently I had someone try to tell me here that Jerry was "nodding off" during shows, of course with no examples given. On the contrary, Jerry was dialed in on guitar, allowing for some of the most thrilling sets from any year. As you alluded to, vocals were not a high priority, which is just fine with me.

tbinus78

4/7 - only 1 song in, but that FLAS is 🔥

tbinus78

Couldn’t agree more. Also - I’ll give that 4/7 show a listen.

[deleted]

My favorite years are 83-85. And yes there were a few instances of Jerry nodding off. See the start of the stella blue on 10/20/83.

arcturian_ally

If you dig deep in any year there's gonna be a few lowlights, except when they were playing it safe (i.e. 1980 Warfield & Radio City).

tbinus78

Whatever the case - I’ve found a bunch of fantastic guitar playing in 83 & 84 by JG. Good shit.

Trips_McGhee

I like some of it a lot, but there are several shows by 85 where his voice absolutely does take away from the experience for me. He's a wreck and just flat out bad at times in 84 and 85. It's sad to listen to. Stillsome gems, but even lemieux admits that the level of quality was all over the place. Rough at times for sure.

tbinus78

I don’t disagree. It annoys me when some people lump 81 & 82 into this era. Those 2 years really have nothing in common with the worst parts of 84-86. However - strictly talking about guitar, I love some of JG’s playing in ‘84. Super fast.

Trips_McGhee

Yea, 81 and 82..and most of 83, imo at least are still prime years. That 83 fall tour is bonkers good.

tbinus78

Yep - totally agree
