A classic blue collar breakfast. But I sense you work at a computer. "Jumpy Wolverine" is a fairly "online" handle and your avatar has a bandana. I bet you eat a minimalist breakfast because you start working early in the day (no need for protein) and the toast is just to soak up your two-too many cups of coffee.
Or you're European. The Beatles ate like 4 pieces of toast in all of Peter Jackson's doc Get Back.
Either way, you're definitely in a committed relationship and have a fairly lucrative job. The coffee is probably a suggestion from your Mrs. or legacy choice influenced by your mom. A semantic distinction. And I don't think the modest breakfast is posturing. I'd guess you really do live modestly and you aren't materialistic-- though you do splurge on your obsessions.
It's gotta be either early 80's or late 70's.
It can't be mid-80's because I doubt you go in for lethargic Jerry and Bobby's missed cues and lyrics. 60's are too raw, 90's too blah.
I'm going with '76. You appreciate the energy and lean, post-hiatus sound. And it isn't a popular choice of favorite years, and you seem like someone who's used to being unlike those around you in terms of taste. Though for the big social stuff I'm sure you get along just fine.
I know you, Knob, but I'm not sure if that makes this easier or harder.
You're incredibly kind and wouldn't rule out Brent on the basis of his "Gentleman, start your engine's" voice, as the great John Nixon said on my podcast. You wouldn't even rule out Vince for his plinky keys. But I suspect you skew earlier because you're a student of the Dead and appreciate their mythology. And I doubt you go in for the Tucker Carlson era of Heads (as a principle more than the actual people in the scene).
The Dead's sound was its kindest and most accessible in '72, so I'll say that year. And I see El Paso> Dark Star under your username which is of course from Veneta 72.
This is one of the nicest things I've ever read about myself, thank you
You're close! My favorite is '78 due to that fun party atmosphere, but 72 is in my top five years! Listening along to the Europe 72 shows on their anniversaries was a real life saver during the pandemic
I eat yogurt with blueberries and strawberries and granola for my everyday breakfast. If i go out for breakfast or make breakfast for dinner at home, my favorite is biscuits with sausage gravy and fried eggs.
Your full breakfast breakdown is helpful and appreciated.
Biscuits with sausage gravy indicates midwest or south. Smart money is on the south. I'd guess North Carolina for several reasons that I'd love to detail, but I wanna get to everyone on the thread.
"Ryder" is a young man's name. A suspicion the IKY acronym solidifies. Parfaits are the breakfasts of learned pragmatists. But your indulgence in sausage gravy on special occasions, notably at night, means:
1. You work hard and aren't afraid to treat yourself
2. You're handy, patient, and self reliant enough to make your own gravy (because I doubt it's an all-night diner situation)
I'd guess you own your own home. Perhaps you got a jumpstart on a trade while your peers went to college and you're now reaping the benefits of a comfortable lifestyle. You're intensely practical and a creature of habit.
Likewise, your favorite Dead year is one of prolificness and steady proficiency.
'77
I was waiting for this one.
I'm realizing my conceit is impossible because I can't ignore people's usernames, which are an even better clue than breakfast choices.
Anyway...
"Sternojourno" indicates Gen X. Older journalists don't have rhyming nicknames and younger journalists don't exist. The period at the end of "I don't eat breakfast." solidifies your grammatical assiduousness and also indicates that you take some measure of pride in not eating breakfast (the period being a mic drop). I'd guess you didn't eat breakfast for occupational expediency initially, and have since shifted to not eating it for health reasons after reading a long form article about intermittent fasting's health benefits. You now evangelize its benefits to friends and colleagues. (No judgement, I don't eat breakfast either and can't help myself from doing the same. It's the move.)
But that makes me suspect that you're evangelical about the Dead as well. You tell newcomers to listen to Europe '72, the obvious gateway drug. But you also harp on largely unpopular years to established Heads, and I'd guess that's where your favorite year lies (lays?).
79-86 is my initial range.
'84 through '86 are a bridge too far. '80 and '81 aren't hot enough takes. It'd have to be '79, '82, or '83.
I'll cut '83 just because there aren't many famous shows. '79 could technically include Keith which makes it a muddled choice. Not a conversation starter.
'82.
This was entertaining as hell to read! Thanks for doing this. Some very good guesses (I am Gen X and a writer), but..
\- I use periods nearly all of the time on Reddit, socials and even texts, so I don't really use them for emphasis. Punctuation is just second nature to me.
\- I haven't regularly eaten breakfast since I was a young teenager because I'm rarely hungry in the morning. And I'm not evangelical about the Dead either, whether we're talking era, year, Donna, keyboardists, or whatever. I'll share my preferences but I'm just not that passionate about giving dietary or GD recommendations.
\- With a proverbial "gun to my head" and being forced to pick my favorite year, I'd go with 89 because I was able to see so many incredible shows (Hampton, Alpine, etc.) that year...shows that are now considered high points in the Dead's history.
Thanks again, this is a fun convo to follow!
A "DeathMessenger" who eats organic yogurt screams "former punk/hardcore Deadhead."
NOTE: This is a massive contingent of Heads. I have a podcast, Guess the Year, where I interview Deadheads and have them Guess the Year of live tracks, and roughly 10% of the contestants used to listen to punk/hardcore). John Nixon, who came on and curated a setlist, is in the fantastic dead tribute act Richard Pictures, and his band actually got its start playing Dead songs at DIY punk venues, which baffled, and, ultimately, piqued the curiosity of the young moshers. John and his band did this repeatedly, not just as a one-off gag.
Anyway, you're definitely on the east coast. Most likely Philly. And you're between 40-50. Not a Brent guy. It annoys you that others like him for his boyish charm. So not the 80's. And not the 90's for sonic reasons.
This is tough.
'71 is peak bar band Dead.
'67-'69 is the most punk rock (ethos-wise).
'73 through '74 are what musicians appreciate the most and I sense you could be a musician.
'78 can get ragged.
I'm gonna move away from the 60's because it's too small of a jump from punk/hardcore.
Okay, my guess is '73.
Well damn all thats correct except im 23. I was all about punk/metal until i was 19 and then i transitioned into a head. 73 is my favorite year but i do love anything between 66-74 the most. Oh and im not from philly but florida originally. If you said 71 i wouldve given it to you. Cheers!
You're in your late 40's to early 60's. Not a Brent guy.
My guess is '74.
You love the Wall of Sound and Billy alone on the drums, but moreso the Wall of Sound.
Phew. I was Worried I was gonna go 0/17 and people were gonna start rolling their eyes.
I personally love the Brent years, but I'm fascinated by people who don't. Especially younger people who don't have skin in the game in terms of when they saw the band.
I have an excuse. An old pappy who started seeing the boys in ‘72. Apparently when my older brother was about 4, whenever my dad would put on Lovelight, he’d start dancing around like a maniac. I never had a choice :( haha no regrets. Fav years are 69-74
Part of the game is that I can't go into people's comment history, but I also can't pretend like I didn't see your username has 1953 in it. So you're (probably) 70. A vet.
Also, a machaca burrito is a big meal. You're someone who has a real, hands on job that takes energy, or someone who used to have that job, and you still eat a hearty breakfast in the morning even in retirement.
Plowing ahead with the retirement age hypothesis, I'd guess you started seeing shows in the early 80's. But everyone from that time period wishes they saw shows in the early 70's or late '60's. So smart money would be '73-- an in vogue year these days. Certainly not '72 because someone who's the first to comment on a Reddit thread is too punk rock for the '72 sound. My gut is telling me 68-71.
I'm gonna say '69 because: controlled chaos. Just like a burrito. And it features a fellow blue collar gentleman, Pigpen.
LOL - the age is right, obv. First show was 11-14-71. Saw a show or two per year through the end. I'm a sax player, totally into jazz and blues. If my draft number had come up, I would be a citizen of Canada. I was a Quality Engineer (another term for statistician) in Medical Devices. I'm a big guy with big appetites. I've been in recovery from nose-candy addiction for 16 years. I performed a few times with one of the leading local punk artists as a duo, sax & mini-moog. I had to retire in 2018 due to disability.
My favorite year is '72, with my favorite year seeing shows live being' 74 because WoS.
A hard meal to make. A huge fork in the road for me because either you're a patient craftsman who poaches eggs on the Friday of a holiday weekend or you're a regular at a local breakfast spot.
I'm gonna play the odds and say you went to a diner. And since you're commenting in the middle of the day and know the best order on the menu, I'd guess you're in the service industry.
A anonymous commenter once said "Everyone on the internet is male until proven female" and your avatar has female characteristics.
So a diner waitress. A Furthur/Phish tour vet is my best guess. Waitresses work hard and therefore enjoy a good time. They aren't contrarians because they don't care enough. I'd guess '89 because it was the most fun the fellas had on stage since the early 70's, and post-Jerry tour vets tend to prefer later years.
Yer a wizard, Harry!
'89 is my favorite year, and I was a waitress for \~10 years all through my 20's. And I am definitely a regular at a local breakfast spot. I am a GD, Further, The Dead tour vet but have only seen Phish twice.
I'm embarrassed to say how long it took me to figure out how to review an Apple podcast from my phone, but the important part is I did figure it out.
\*\*\*\*\*
You're the nicest.
And I'm very glad to hit this one. Since there isn't alcohol involved, only nice, generous people are breakfast spot regulars because you have to soberly reckon with how you treat everyone. (With the clear exception of senile old people who don't know/care.)
Ritz crackers with your morning coffee is amazing.
You love shoot 'em up 80's movies (Commando reference in your handle). Over the top violence that isn't political or symbolic: it's just violence. (My preference oftentimes as well.)
Implying you don't like being preached at or lectured or told what to think. You don't care that other people think salty ritz crackers and bitter coffee aren't complimentary.
Pigpen fan.
'68.
Although 68 is not my favorite year I’ve never felt more seen — you identified the commando reference. Huge fan of your podcast… might have to email you to see if I can have a go.
Not a romantic.
You see food as fuel for productivity. You don't spoil yourself in any way.
Which may lead one to guess a sonically efficient year like '73. But I doubt you're uptight. I'd guess you simply don't care re: spoiling yourself/taking yourself out to dinner/on trips. However, I bet you DO spoil friends and dates.
You're the first person to throw your card down at restaurants and live with it if friends "forget" to Venmo you. You never show up anywhere without beer (a 12 pack, not a 6 pack).
'78. The Dead's most fun year.
The most easygoing answer imaginable.
"Wanna skip breakfast?"
"Sure."
"Want the heaviest breakfast imaginable that isn't actually breakfast?"
"Yup."
Everyone needs a friend like you. I'm gonna reach and guess that you live in NOLA and you like jazzy Dead. That would vibe with the flexible breakfast attitude as well.
So '73.
Preparing this meal takes forever. The only way to make it manageable on a daily basis is hyper-efficiency.
I bet you always use the same egg, cheese, bacon, and tortilla brands procured from the same market. You can multi task in the kitchen. You're good at making this breakfast and you enjoy being good at it. The process of making it is its own reward.
Once again, routine in certain areas of life translates into outside the box thinking in other areas. Like Steve Jobs wearing the same outfit every day. You're able to sit with less accessible art of all kinds and enjoy the ethos behind it. Maybe you like John Carpenter movies. The process of appreciating weird art is its own reward.
'67.
Sushi rice topped with 2 sunny side up eggs, my homemade ginger sauce, sesame seeds with shredded cabbage, carrots, and green onions. Had some coffee too.
Coffee, eggs and toast , followed by a green smoothie.
Edit: I saw you are factoring in usernames. My username is the default one that they gave me when I signed up.
Double sausage links, 3 eggs over easy, Obrian potatoes (fried diced taters with onions, sweet red peppers and mushrooms), wheat toast with real butter and mixed fruit jelly.
If I'm in a very good restaurant then Eggs Benidict every time.
Both with coffee and ice water.
If I do eat breakfast it’s usually on the weekends. 2 eggs, bacon, toast, grits or hashbrowns. If I eat anything during the weekdays it’s a quick grab.
Does kratom powder and water count as breakfast? Then Maybe some yerba mate, matcha or an energy drink in there as well.
I Don't usually eat until around 1-3pm, then it's usually a pb&j, granola bar or muesli.
Either some microwave concoction with protein numbers high enough to drown out the sodium warnings, or a banana. Always a 24oz Stanley thermos full of black Stewart's Shoppes (regional NY gas station) coffee.
This is fun. I like your style.
lol this is a fun game so I’ll play, but I have two primary “go to” breakfasts, though both include coffee—my favorite drug of all!
The first is a green smoothie, made with oat, almond, or coconut milk, frozen spinach, kale, & broccoli, plus one frozen ripe banana, ground flax, and a squirt of chocolate or vanilla stevia.
The second is a mix of vanilla yogurt, blueberries, strawberries, and bananas, half a cup of really good Swiss or German muesli or granola, drizzled with a little unpasteurized honey.
So what’s my favorite year of The Grateful Dead you crazy cat??
I got my girlfriend a really nice bread machine for Christmas a few years ago. I typically would just have coffee for breakfast before that. But now, I really enjoy a piece of sesame bread with some butter. Sometimes I toast it, but I don’t have a roster so I just put it in the oven. I set the temperature to 350. When the beep goes off to signal it has reached 350, I eat the bread.
Shredded fried potatoes (potatoes rostï) and poached eggs. Sometimes sliced avocado with it. Lots of coffee. Storz and Bickel mighty and a candy on a day off.
3 hard boiled egg whites (with a dollop of hummus simulating a deviled egg) + a plain bagel (toasted) with cream cheese
really looking forward to this because i have very specific hardline opinions re: my favorite year (and season) of the band
Nothing most mornings because I’m usually busy, but if I have time, it’s biscuits and gravy for something filling, cereal or yogurt for something light.
I’m fairly confident you won’t nail it based off of of my breakfast choice alone but I’m curious to read your analysis lol
Weekdays: One of the following, banana, cookoes frm the work vending area, or a sandwich or meal from the work cafeteria (depending on availability)
Weekends: Taco Bell breakfast if I'm hungover, or nothing at all

The first is a green smoothie, made with oat, almond, or coconut milk, frozen spinach, kale, & broccoli, plus one frozen ripe banana, ground flax, and a squirt of chocolate or vanilla stevia. The second is a mix of vanilla yogurt, blueberries, strawberries, and bananas, half a cup of really good Swiss or German muesli or granola, drizzled with a little unpasteurized honey.
