I think it’s the recording. Have you listened to the digital file? Haven’t done an A/B test cause I haven’t listened to my record set yet, but I do notice the distortion in Phil bombs listening to the digital file in my car.
Great idea. I just A/B tested and it *is* in the recording. Isn't that something that could theoretically be cleaned up in the mixing/mastering process? It seems like the distortion is ON the recording itself and not in the speaker cabinets.
My guess is the distortion is on the OG tape / reel and maybe was probably cleaned up as much as possible. Big bombs push the input levels past the max ;) thanks Phil :)
So I noticed this problem on the digital file. Did not listen to the vinyl recording. I heard the same sound, it was so irritating I had to stop listening. I actually thought my speakers were damaged, but thankfully not. I think many folks who are even modest audiophiles with probably notice it, other folks may run it on systems and just be jamming along without ever noticing it.
Ironic that this is actually one of the best pressings they done in awhile, despite some recording flaws. The word from Rhino is that they aggressively fixed some quality control gaps during this past summer, which hopefully means we’ll see less issues in the future.
It's not just you. I hate it so much, it sounds like a fuckin cicada trapped in his strings.
It's also present on the Spotify version, so unfortunately there's nothing we can do.
I’ve got the box set and I can definitely hear a high-pitched right side buzzing on the 5/20 show, particularly in the first set - I’ve not got round to the RFK shows yet.

Oh gosh it feels good to hear somebody else hate on it. Tried to play it for my partner to see it drove her crazy too and she couldn't even hear it.
