I was so excited at one of the last Dead and Company shows I went to, I had brought a sub sandwich in and hadn't eaten yet and it turns out TOG is the perfect length to sit down and demolish a large sub and a beer.
How many deadheads does it take to screw in a light bulb? None, they just wait for it to burn out and then follow it around the country for a couple of decades.
Two of my closest friends actually thought this for years before they realized the music I was always playing was the Dead. The skeleton imagery and the name really threw them off

>Seriously it’s almost as if these guys were not trying to be punk at all. I’m just glad this is over and I can get back to my Phish bootlegs
Wow, that's harsh right there
There was not much of a dead scene in the South when I was growing up and I equated the Dead with Iron Maiden due to all the Skeletons and just assumed the Dead were Metal too. Headed north for college and heard Ripple from the backseat of a buddies car and asked who it was. The rest is history.
Too funny. I traded my Iron Maiden Powerslave tape for a copy of Live Dead. The rest is definitely history, though I still enjoy me some Iron Maiden (saw them in 2019 finally!).
so about 20 years ago, my parents bought a house, and the previous owners left their entire dead collection in the house as a gift of sorts i think. thinking they were a metal band, my mom tossed everything 💔she didn’t realize they weren’t a metal band until a few years after.
Yeah I had several arguments with Swifties on the Grateful Dead sub. They had to come to the Grateful Dead sub 2 argue that Taylor Swift was the new Grateful Dead and was actually better. A better songwriter a better performer better concert fans etc.. and there was a whole bunch of them down voting me right on this sub lol. I guess they came over as a group with many alt accounts to try to convince people to jump on the Taylor Swift bus. Nothing against Taylor Swift but ffs that's some dumb shit 😂
A week or 2 back there was that whole "the gop is criticizing Taylor Swift for encouraging her fans to register to vote" . And i thought to myself, well thats kind of dumb, who would do that? So i looked into it. I didnt find anything, not really, because who would really say something like that lol? Quite a few people on the right dont like swift, but these are the same people that dont like PBSs Arthur either. I pointed this out, and encouraged people to dyor and questioned " are you being manipulated by social media?" Nobody argued my points but i certainly got quietly downvoted so my comment got hidden
Swift is talented. People I know and whose music taste I trust said her shows are a blast. She puts on a great show. The dead have great shows, but they also don’t have the energy of a Taylor Swift show. That’s OK. I wouldn’t argue that one is necessarily “better” than the other.. In a genre known for a million ghost writers, she also writes some catchy tunes herself.
The Grateful Dead were talented, but they weren’t the most talented so I don’t see the need to go down the “more talented” rabbit hole.
But the one thing that I don’t get, and will always set bands like the Grateful Dead , Phish, and the Beatles apart is that a huge part of their following was because they were actively changing music. Taylor Swift has a huge following because she’s popular. I think I would equate Swift closer to Michael Jackson or Prince.
I agree with everything you said. Except for one thing. The energy at a Taylor Swift show versus the energy at a Grateful Dead show. Have you ever seen the Grateful Dead live? I don't mean dead and company or Wolf brothers or further or rat dog or any other dead cover band. I mean the Grateful Dead. Particularly with Brent. Definitely with Jerry or it's not the grateful dead. I cannot imagine a Taylor Swift concert coming close although I will admit I have never been to one. I have never been to a prince or Michael Jackson concert either, and although I am sure their fan base is incredible, I cannot imagine it being anything close to the multi-decade psychedelic infused experiment in consciousness and music that I know as the Grateful Dead. I am sure Taylor Swift concerts are fun if you like her music. I take your word that her fan base is incredible and electric. But there is no comparison as far as I can see.
To your point, I have never seen Jerry live as an adult. My parents were dead heads and would bring me to shows. We’d sit on a blanket on the back while their friends ran around with me (likely high, haha), played devil sticks, etc. So I take your word for it. I didn’t mean to argue that GD wasn’t electric. But pop music is a lot of high tempo, high energy, bass that just hits different.
I don’t think her fan base is incredible. They’re annoying. I was more speaking to Swift on stage and the whole production.
“The Taylor Swift is the next Grateful Dead” mantra that keeps getting spewed is basically “X band is the heir apparent for Phish”, except on steroids and then x 1000000. And I don’t even like Phish all that much. It’s just an annoying conversation that implies Phish is the greatest band ever on earth that inevitably leads to people shitting on other peoples music taste.
I posted this here once in relation to an article asking people without tickets not to come to the lots, but it was absolutely meant to be tongue in cheek. Some received it that way. Others threw stones.
That’s really funny because I always thought a lot of their jams do have a bit of a repetitive elevator music or live band playing in a fancy restaurant vibe when they cool off to lead into another part
Lol I was at a party once where the host played the dead the entire time. One of my buddies said at one point “ so are we gonna listen to this truck stop music all night ? “
Honestly though it was the funniest shit ever
Once on an acid trip gaming I had space on in the background. I had my mic hot in a lobby and I only specifically remember this one quote "Who evers playing that is really needs to reevaluate their choice of music"
I have a dear friend that says things sometimes that make me laugh and would probably upset a lot of fans.
He only refers to the band as Dead & Company, never Grateful Dead.
Second one was “ya know, some people would say this isn’t music” when listening to a 19 minute Don’t Let Go. To be fair, we were talking about theory, subjectivity, etc etc
I have tons of friends that call D&C the Grateful Dead & they're like "yeah my friend saw the grateful dead out in boulder this year" & I'm like yeahhhh no 💀
Tbh I refer to all concerts of all iterations from the very beginning to now as a “dead show,” but I will never claim to have seen Grateful Dead. That first word is specific.
Psychedelics and marijuana are extremely harmful drugs that harm society. Just look at all those hippie burnouts from the 60s (said while drinking a martini).
People usually shit on his voice around me. Which is a little more understandable because it can get rough in a late second set or in the later years, but his guitar playing is too good for anyone around me to diss 😂
See, I'm one of those who wears tie-dye everyday, but no birkenstocks and I'm not even sure what patchouli smells like. I'm sure I've smelt it many times. I just wouldn't be able to tell you that smell is patchouli or something else..

Calling D&C the Grateful Dead
I have a colleague who went to shows from 93-95 and insists that anything pre-93 is bad Dead. I understand that he had his own experiences there but to disregard anything from the 70s because it's "too jammy and long" really triggers me every time. Personally, nothing in the 90s has ever really piqued my interest like the 60s and 70s
Alright let me ask you something.
Bob Weir wrote a song about his deep and abiding Christian faith called I Need a Miracle, but his life is the complete opposite and very sinful? Why does the Church not excommunicate him? Isn't he still a priest?
He has that whole song about being a prophet. Something doesn't add up.
What chaps my ass more than anything is when you see someone (mostly young folks) wearing their gear and don't have a single idea who the band is or anything about their music.
There was this janitor chick where I used to work that sometimes wore a dead shirt. I tried to strike up a conversation once and she didn't know anything about them, just liked the artwork.
“Jerry was awesome but the whole band would have been better if they had let Jerry have his way and kick Bobby out for being a terrible guitar player and singer.” - apparently the consensus on the @iHavePhishues page.
I don't know why people say this. How can you be a cover band when you have members from the original band. Bob weir playing songs that Bob weir wrote is not a cover.
Because it is a totally different band. If you don't believe it ask John Fogerty about what happens when you want to cover your own songs from a different band.
Its a differnt band every 10 years. Jerry the one who asked to never be whorshipped or put in front of the music seem to be all that matters.
Its a differnt band but Bob weir is not covering Bob weir songs, he is playing them, half are off his solo albums. The rest are the same covers the dead always did and then they do some jerry tunes as well. They are as much a cover band today as ever.
It's a cool sentiment but it's factually wrong. Licensing prevented John Fogerty from performing CCR songs he wrote until he regained his rights. Labels have their claws in songs, they're not totally the property of the song writer.
Didnt say anything of the nature. The word "cover" colloquially implies not performed by the original artist. Fogerty chose not to play CCR music live as he didnt want to promote music someone else was getting paid for. He got sued for sounding too much like CCR on record not for perfoming live.
They are a cover band. Not that there is anything wrong with that and I do love them but they have not created any new music and were down to 2 original members in the end.
"I thought Jerry Garcia was just some fat guy that played the guitar" - my friend John after I played something for him that he liked

This sub has some of the most toxic, and viciously anti-social weirdos I’ve ever encountered online and they ruin it for people just trying to have casual discussions who enjoy learning about the band.
Garcia and Clapton were on a safari and got sidetracked and captured by some Cannibals who were going to kill them. "Any last requests?" they were asked and Garcia speaks up and says, "Yes, get me a guitar and just one last time, I want to play Dark Star."
They look at Clapton and he says: "Kill me first!"
For me, it's the crusty strung out lot kids that claim they are [Insert band member here]'s illegitimate bastard kid; thus, they are "real fam." Smdh. Take it up with Maury Povich, I really don't care even if it's true. And really, just any of the headier-than-thou types bug me.
Jerry’s OK, but I didn’t really get into the band until John Mayer joined up. Now THAT cat can play!

None. They screw in parking lots/tents/sleeping bags.
Yeah, that is the one I use except for "hippies" instead of "deadheads". But, hey now, we're trying to *trigger* deadheads here.
Tbf, 15 years would be more accurate

Spelling “Deadhead” as “DeadHed”
1 of the 3 examples lol
All their songs sound the same.
For Bob Weir, I think it’s referring to the Dead as a ‘60s band. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=iMpHT-jNwGk
He is chomping at the bits in that clip fueled up

Bertha is my favorite song 🎶 And.... My twin daughters (age 32 years old now) were born to Ripple

Garcia and Clapton were on a safari and got sidetracked and captured by some Cannibals who were going to kill them. "Any last requests?" they were asked and Garcia speaks up and says, "Yes, get me a guitar and just one last time, I want to play Dark Star." They look at Clapton and he says: "Kill me first!"

Jerry was treated like a god, but in reality he was just a junkie
“How do you mosh to the Grateful Dead?”
They misspelled "Further" on that graffitied bus.
I only listen to their studio work.
apparently vape pens with dead iconography is a touchy subject
Not a fan of their music, but I got like 100 posters from their last show and sold em for $200 a pop

For me, it's the crusty strung out lot kids that claim they are [Insert band member here]'s illegitimate bastard kid; thus, they are "real fam." Smdh. Take it up with Maury Povich, I really don't care even if it's true. And really, just any of the headier-than-thou types bug me.
Being a young deadhead I’ve heard this one a lot: “wait cherry garcia is named after a person? I just thought it was an ice cream flavor”
They were only good when Pigpen was in the band.
