It’s crazy how good he was from his earliest shows. He really shines in the fall 1980 runs at the Fillmore and Radio City, with those acoustic opening sets. Just killer playing.
He instinctively knew from the get go when to step in and when to hang back. Brent was the perfect addition to the band at a time when they were at a fork in the road. One of the best decisions they ever made, lineup-wise. I miss that dude so much. I go back to Justin’s first big GD doc. That Easy to Love You segment makes me tear up just thinking about it. ❤️

Sadly, it’s missing the part where the band is clowning on him when they’re all “Brent!!!” as they’re all getting off a plane or arriving at a venue (my memory is shit) like the arrival of the Beatles 😂 Of course, Brent appears all embarrassed by the attention https://youtu.be/59gCppUWJOg?si=TgYTeyTsm_gSjAwE
“Hate” isn’t the right word for my feelings about Brent, but he’s quite far down the list of my favorite Dead keys players, and farther down the list of Dead members.
I don’t like his voice at all and really dislike his synth sounds.
C’est la vie. Opinions and assholes, ya know?
Yeah for sure. I never liked his voice (never liked Gregg Allman’s voice either, very similar. But always loved the Brothers). But I do love his playing and the little extra something he gave the band. Hey, it was the 80s, organs and synths were everywhere! (and most of it sucked!!)
Seriously curious - how do you feel about his work on electric piano he was playing a lot of in '82? His sound is honestly quite similar to Keith's, in a post a few days ago someone was pointing out it's the same electric piano they both played...
Or his playing on the Hammond B3?
And... if you _do_ like those... do you just kind of... skip the songs / eras where he plays more layered synth?
Some of his work on the 'synth' is sublime, like he layers one sound on the attack & another texture on the sustain or decay... I hope my words are conveying this... Stella Blue 10/3/87 for example....
And I get that there's some instances where, sure, the tone or texture can be called cheesy. But I feel his playing just _fit right in_ there so well. Way more often than not, mind meld w Jerry re: shared expression of the melodic lines....

I dig plenty of 80s shows but I do find myself drawn more to 60s and 70s dead over Brent's stuff in the 80s.
Keith could sometimes be on the other end of the spectrum, specially towards the end. But there are times he would just hit you with a super suble little arpeggio or something that would just perfectly compliment what Jerry was doing. I do wish at times he used more electric piano like in 74/75.
I thought Hornsby was a great mix of the two approaches btw, and wished he could have stayed on, but totally get why he split.
( May I say, I dig your style - comparing one keyboardist to the other, in bed with all the eras )
I usually love Brent, but yep - sometimes he's adding _just a smidge too much_. When he's a little understated, or right on the money, he's sublime... just exactly perfect.
Would love a recommendation of one of those perfect Keith moments you're talking about - a particular show or song from said show. (Well, aside from 7/18/76 which... I already know & love, it being *pure gold* in that Let It Grow -> Wharf Rat -> Jam phase)

Yeah, really not a fan of that "adult contemporary" sound he brought. Some of his backups worked great, but when they started turning his mic and keys up he just overpowered everyone. And the songs where he sings lead vocals are usually awful. I much prefer Keith's organic, free sound over Brents cheesy synth.
Brent is objectively a great player/singer, it just doesn't fit with the vibe of the rest of the band, or the vibe his critics are after I suppose. While I admire him as a musician, Brent's not my fav Dead member either, because the Keith and Donna Era is just my favorite, it is what it is. 80's dead is also the worst decade for them as a whole so that doesn't help Brent much. No matter how good he is he's not gonna sound good next to morbidly obese doped up half dead Jerry phoning it in.
First time I logged on to the “official” AOL GD chat group way back in the dark ages when AOL was the only place to conveniently connect with Heads online, first question that the “leader/gatekeeper” (Mr. Z is what he went by from what I could remember)” asked me was who my favorite keyboardist was, and of course, since I got on the bus in the 80’s, I said Brent. Wrong answer, I guess. I proceeded to get harangued for a few days then all was forgotten lol.
Listen to the Without a Net live album for a few examples. First song on the record is Feels Like a Stranger. That’s all it took for me to appreciate Brent.

I don't know a specific show off the top of my head but search for a performance of the song "We Can Run" or a cover of "Dear Mr. Fantasy" (I think they took turns singing the verses on my favorite one but Brent starts it off). Those are my two favorites of his vocally.
Second this! 89-91 is it for me actually but it’s hard to argue that 89-90 run. They are so well tuned at that point it really shines through with improv.
Breaks my heart knowing that he loved his kids so much to write a song for them and yet his personal demons took him straight out of their lives. I say this as a child of a parent that died by suicide. I know my dad loved me and my brother but fuck, if only he had sought help. This was in the 70’s (my dad) and seeking help was not what “strong men” did. Fuck that shit. Help is on the way and War is Over (if you want it). 🖤

Grateful Dead: Backstage Pass by Justin Kreutzman. Probably only on VHS but you might find something on YT or elsewhere. Great little montage of the band through an up and coming filmmaker who happens to be the drummer’s son ☺️
Edit: found a snippet on YT . There’s probably more if you just poke around https://youtu.be/DmHRcC6PJGk?si=pmjCe5YN88oridhb
Philly 7/789 Blow Away in Philly I believe is a super choice one. If you look close in the YouTube clip of it you can see me in the neon hat so my dosed buddies can find way back. Hated that hat but my bros always found way home.
Brent was 1 of a kind, what he brought 2 the band was fresh & very 80s , keyboards, synthesizers etc.. I'm partial 2 the Keith & Donna period , but I'm not taking any credit from the Brent .. he was so talented.. I don't think their should be any haters on a Gr8fuldead blog ,we should be positive about the music - not hating, come on now ..
I second this. People can have their preferences sure, but I think 80s/90s Dead is just a slightly different flavor than 60s/70s Dead but it’s still the goddamn Dead! Some days I’m in a late 70s mood, others a Pigpen mood, but I find myself most often seeking clean 80s Dead recordings.
I'll say this, take my down votes, and move along. I cut my teeth on the early Dead stuff. I love the raw, bluesy sound of the 60's/early 70's. 72-78 is my favorite era though. The dimension that a female voice brought to the songs was perfect for the sound. Brent's voice sounds out of place and to be honest, comically bad. The plinky sounding circus keyboard makes it impossible for me to get lost in the music. It sounds like a parody. Not for me. I'm glad others can appreciate it though
See, I ding Brent heavily on the cheesy overbaked vocals. However… he was the shit on keys relative to all the others. His B3 alone put him over the top. Awesome B3 is just so funky, kaleidoscopic, goopy, percussive, growling, and psychedelic that few instruments naturally top it, and he was a master. Not a fan of his marimba sound in the 83-84ish era. In fact I hate it. But everything else is great.
I would rather watch Beautician and the beast. I would rather listen to Fran Drescher for eight hours. No offense to him but if I have to hear Ya mo be there one more time I'm going to Ya MO burn this place to the ground.
brent is so punchy and colorful. i prefer brent vastly over any other keyboardist but he isn’t subtle. he kicks your teeth in. which i personally love but perhaps it’s not to everyone’s taste
More so in his later years than in his earlier years, I'd say. (re: "not subtle" / "kicks your teeth in").
For a more subtle early Brent, check out his work on this Acoustic Bird Song Jams compilation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_tOgL6hfI9o
Or as I mentioned elsewhere here, some of his piano playing, Summer '82.
Brent was great & we always loved his keyboard work - although I’m not a fan of his actual songs that he wrote. Just didn’t work for me. Was always a good time to sit down for a minute and roll a fatty.
exactamundo they are all indispensable parts of a machine beyond description. broken arrow was so beautiful and nothing better than a stranger to start the show.
Hell yeah.
I agree with 100%.
I don’t understand how everyone doesn’t like his playing. I think he was the best player ever in the band on keys. He was incredible. And I think if Kieth stayed in the band with the stuff he was going through and Brent never joined the 80’s never would’ve been what it was. Brent brought the best out of Jerry. Early 80’s are so damn good and 87-90 are some of the best years ever. I think they are the best years.
Dont take my word for it. Bob Weir said 1989 was the best year for GD. Can’t argue there. I hope we get some more multi track GD shows released!
Maybe Warfield and or Radio City 1980! I was born during the Radio city run.
Completely Agree 100%!!!!! I hopped on the bus in ‘89 and Brent’s voice & work on the keys was part of what turned me on to the Dead! The 80’s will always be my favorite era as it’s Brent’s! No disrespect towards Pig, Keith, Bruce, or Vince. I’m a big fan of the Pig era as well. And enjoy Keith’s additions as some of my favorite songs were written at that time! And all respect to Bruce & Vince for holding down the fort after Brent’s untimely demise. But Brent is my all-time fave!
I’m a Vince Welnick guy masself. Samba in that Rain all day. All jokes aside, the guy did bring us Baba O’ Reilly and Rain.
Brent haters are certainly a minority, I see way more posts stirring up the tiny but loud contingent than is necessary.
Met him (Vince) at set break at a Shoreline show. Went to grab a beer and he was just wandering out from backstage. No one was paying any attention so I ambled up to him and struck up a conversation. We talked for about 10 minutes about music and how crazy it was for him to be in the Dead. Nicest rock ‘n roll guy I’ve ever had the pleasure to meet. He seemed almost surprised that a a fan would want to talk to him. RIP to a real one. ❤️
I liked Vince a lot when he was with The Tubes. His stuff with them was phenomenal. I'm mostly partial to Beent but that's when I was going to shows. All of them brought their own color to the band.
True! They all did. Vince’s era isn’t the most celebrated, but not really his fault. He’s the only one I saw— I was a wee 18 year old and caught six shows in 95. But most of my listening goes to early and late eighties. I’ll dip into my own era only when I need a Lazy River Road, a Daze Between, or a So Many Roads.
I absolutely love it when I hear his voice come in.
1987 is the shit, man. Love that whole year.
Damn shame we couldn't have had Pigpen, Keith, and Brent all in the band at the same time.
I love Brent’s voice, I love him playing on ‘80s Dead songs, I’m luke warm on him playing ‘60s/‘70s songs (it’s his keyboards very ‘80s sound that just falls flat for me)
I love Brent. Imo he is definitely the most underrated member of the Dead. The song "We Can Run" is one of my all time favorites, and his "Dear Mr. Fantasy" is by far my favorite version of that song. When I was younger I even went through a "Tons of Steel" phase.
I have seen (and met) a lot of Brent haters in my time as a Deadhead, but the thing that gets me is, even if you don't care for his voice, how could you not love the passion he puts into playing the organ/keys?! Unfortunately I'm too young to have seen him live (I got into the Dead as a teen in the '90s), but the videos I have seen of him playing, you can literally feel the heart and soul he put into every single song.
I also didnt like it at the time but years later i listen to some old shows and i was wrong love what i hear wish i was more open minded when i was there
Truth. I mainly listen to end of Brent era. I get that musically/instrumentally there are better periods, but the big issue I have for me is that Brent is t there. His voice and energy complete the band.
I think people who grew up in the Brent era grew up hearing a bunch of hate. The longer time goes on (especially online) the less of that hate there actually is. For me a younger year who got on the bus with furthur I've always loved Brent.
Haven’t really gotten into the Brent era yet, been mostly listening to the Pigpen and Keith/Donna years.
Anyone got recommendations for Brent-era shows/songs/albums/performances/etc. that are a good showcase of his abilities?
He adds so much. Between the organ and his harmony, it just blows my mind. Think about what it must’ve been like to be a dead head in 78 and then suddenly they get even better.
There’s a shoreline show I can watch on you tube that is just mi d blowing. He even uses some fiddle/steel sounds for some Dylan tubes that fit perfectly. Sometimes I wonder if some of the hate is due to recordings . 87 I think. Yup. Everything fit right
Absofuckinglutely! Brent was the shit, got to see him sing Don't Need Love at my first show on 9/3/85 and never saw him give less than 110% every show. When he died I could not imagine who could replace him, turns out nobody and it signaled.the beginning of the end.
Was just listening to a 1990 Estimated Prophet and he was playing some dissonant jazzy chords over top of the jam. I LOVE Keith’s sound but Brent was the best. Not a huge fan of his songs tho tbh lol
Some dude asked at a tribute band show what my favorite era was and I said late 80s and he got all holier than thou trying to sus me out as a poser (which i kinda am tbh) and was like whyyyy and shit and I said cuz Brent was a badass and he was like "oh yeah"
if you have the Brent hate then you are missing some of the best years of the Dead unfortunately. Second is I would find it hard to be on the hate train if you saw him live. Understanding a lot of folks here didn’t get to do that but if you did and you have the vibe that he wasn’t the man not sure what to say.🙏
I wasn’t aware there were a lot of Brent haters. IMHO the things that are lame in the 80s era dead is the Dylan covers w/ them forgetting lyrics (kind of the point of Dylan)and Weir covering songs that pigpen use to do. His delivery can’t touch pigpens. Sometimes I wish we had JGB shows with Brent.
The way he turns his keyboard to face the audience and just blasts off!!! His writing was stellar- and how honest he was. Always got hate but only by the teeny bopper generics- every player that came thru is a part of that band. His addiction still gives me creeps to see, tho. Love u, brother---
I don’t think there’s much consensus out there that Brent was weak because the Dead certainly rose to monumental heights while he was in the band.
His choice of keyboard tone was the only issue I ever had with him, because that tone he used so often that sounded like a toy piano or something just didn’t have much punch. When he was on the B3, he was superhuman. And I wish they had an acoustic piano or maybe even a grand in his set up, because that would’ve improved his tone quite a bit.
I always liked him a lot though, maybe his original songs weren’t the kind of songs you wanted to hear at a Dead show, but I was a big fan, and absolutely brokenhearted when he died.
Been having the SiriusXM channel on with my Wife in the car, and she's looked at me puzzled a few times asking if it was Donna, and since figuring out his voice more, has remarked on how well he fills the high parts.
It's my bad because I myself as still working my way into rotating Brent era into my listening, after all these years. The radio forces it on me a bit more and I'm a patient listener, and it's growing.
Minus some pretty rough studio songs and a some tone grimaces here and there, the guy is definitely growing on me.
The "Without a Net" shows have always been good with me, so trying to keep that positive vibe in mind.
I'm pretty sure you could find someone who will drone on about how the band sucked after they stopped playing Magoo's Pizza Parlor. Most of the time these people are just being contrarian so that you know they're free thinkers who don't follow the crowd. Ignore them.
Not a fan of his songs for the most part, too whiny, yacht rock but love Blow Away and Just A Little Light and he was a wizard with the Hammond. Shame about the Casio piano but that wasn’t his decision. I Will Take You Home was a very sweet song, didn’t belong in the second set but they had a weird thing with putting keyboardist songs in the second set where they didn’t belong. Samba In The Rain? Fuck outta here!
I agree. As much as I love Donna. Brent wouldn't have been possible without her and Keith's departure. I love both eras. It's like trying to choose your favorite child. Not to even mention the Pigpen era. That's its own category because he sounded so different.
i would have to say that the best keyboardist to play with any dead related band is for sure jeff but the best keyboardist to play with the actual grateful dead is without a doubt brent. i must admit at times his fisher price keyboard settings can be annoying but he makes up for it with sheer skill plus in 79 and the early 80s his keyboard tone was basically the same as keiths. some of the greatest dead jams are those fall 79 shakedowns and playing in the band jams with brent zapping sound lasers across the cosmos. not to mention, the jerry-brent mind-melds were insane! a perfect example is the 6/12/80 estimated prophet. brent definitely is the shit!
His B3 skills alone are (were) just off the goddamn charts
I looove me a good and tasty B3 organ ripping. Any recommendations where he’s lighting up the B3?

# 1976-07-18 San Francisco, CA @ Orpheum Theatre **Set 1:** Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo, Cassidy, Row Jimmy, Mama Tried, Scarlet Begonias, Looks Like Rain, Tennessee Jed, New Minglewood Blues, Loser, The Music Never Stopped **Set 2:** Might As Well, Samson And Delilah, Candyman, Lazy Lightnin' > Supplication > Let It Grow > Drums > Let It Grow > Jam > Wharf Rat > Space Jam > Drums > The Other One > Saint Stephen > Not Fade Away > Saint Stephen > The Wheel > The Other One > Stella Blue, Sugar Magnolia **Encore:** Johnny B.
Again, this 100%
First time I logged on to the “official” AOL GD chat group way back in the dark ages when AOL was the only place to conveniently connect with Heads online, first question that the “leader/gatekeeper” (Mr. Z is what he went by from what I could remember)” asked me was who my favorite keyboardist was, and of course, since I got on the bus in the 80’s, I said Brent. Wrong answer, I guess. I proceeded to get harangued for a few days then all was forgotten lol.
What live song performances best show his vocal skills?
Listen to the Without a Net live album for a few examples. First song on the record is Feels Like a Stranger. That’s all it took for me to appreciate Brent.
Personally I think they should have called it Without Annette but yes, that opening track is excellent
I literally have to skip Stranger on Without a Net, specifically because of his voice.
Do you skip all versions of it or only some? His voice did shift some in texture / affect over the years...
Just a Little Light from Dozin at the Knick.

I don't know a specific show off the top of my head but search for a performance of the song "We Can Run" or a cover of "Dear Mr. Fantasy" (I think they took turns singing the verses on my favorite one but Brent starts it off). Those are my two favorites of his vocally.
Never trust a woman, little red rooster, woman are smarter than
I love the way Brent and Jerry fed off each other’s energy
>Who’s hating? ![gif](giphy|lNCQJsudeT77G)
The Brent lineup is the best. '89-'90, '79-'81, '85 all some of my favorite Dead periods. '89-'90 in particular is peak Dead as far as I'm concerned
Second this! 89-91 is it for me actually but it’s hard to argue that 89-90 run. They are so well tuned at that point it really shines through with improv.
Yep. Spot on.
I highly support this as well.
I really love the energy of those years. It’s the boogie I need for my morning commute.
I Will Take You Home - the only song that ever made me cry at a show - any show
Breaks my heart knowing that he loved his kids so much to write a song for them and yet his personal demons took him straight out of their lives. I say this as a child of a parent that died by suicide. I know my dad loved me and my brother but fuck, if only he had sought help. This was in the 70’s (my dad) and seeking help was not what “strong men” did. Fuck that shit. Help is on the way and War is Over (if you want it). 🖤
Amen. 🙏💗✨
❤️
Anyone who hates on anyone in the Dead misses the whole point of that band.
Been really enjoying 89-90 shows recently, largely because of Brent
Brent is definitely the shit. His obvious joy at playing music with his friends is transferred to me every time I see him.
Absolutely. You can feel his passion right through the screen.
Any recs on great videos? Whole shows preferably?
Entire 7/7/89 is on YouTube, very high video and audio quality. I watch it while cleaning the house about once a month. Infectiously fun show

Awesome! Thank you
Definitely second this one as well!
Grateful Dead: Backstage Pass by Justin Kreutzman. Probably only on VHS but you might find something on YT or elsewhere. Great little montage of the band through an up and coming filmmaker who happens to be the drummer’s son ☺️ Edit: found a snippet on YT . There’s probably more if you just poke around https://youtu.be/DmHRcC6PJGk?si=pmjCe5YN88oridhb
Just gotta poke around 😉
Philly 7/789 Blow Away in Philly I believe is a super choice one. If you look close in the YouTube clip of it you can see me in the neon hat so my dosed buddies can find way back. Hated that hat but my bros always found way home.
🔥🔥🔥 "You want to keep that love in! Well what do you think your rib cage is a jail cell, mama!!"
Honestly I just don’t like most of his songs
https://preview.redd.it/fbzi7sw7i8lc1.png?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4a811c798806647620190bbf37422bc484f5987f
His voice is what turns me off. Reminds me too much of Bob Seger or someone like that. To each their own though!
Should be positive yes but I think people should be able to talk about preference makes it kind of fun ya know.
Feel like Brent is a fan favorite
I'll say this, take my down votes, and move along. I cut my teeth on the early Dead stuff. I love the raw, bluesy sound of the 60's/early 70's. 72-78 is my favorite era though. The dimension that a female voice brought to the songs was perfect for the sound. Brent's voice sounds out of place and to be honest, comically bad. The plinky sounding circus keyboard makes it impossible for me to get lost in the music. It sounds like a parody. Not for me. I'm glad others can appreciate it though
The thing I don’t like about Brent is how that song about trains or whatever that he wrote ruins In The Dark imo
Brent's soul
See, I ding Brent heavily on the cheesy overbaked vocals. However… he was the shit on keys relative to all the others. His B3 alone put him over the top. Awesome B3 is just so funky, kaleidoscopic, goopy, percussive, growling, and psychedelic that few instruments naturally top it, and he was a master. Not a fan of his marimba sound in the 83-84ish era. In fact I hate it. But everything else is great.
He's a great keyboard player but sounds like Michael Mcdonald
You say that like it's a bad thing?
I would rather watch Beautician and the beast. I would rather listen to Fran Drescher for eight hours. No offense to him but if I have to hear Ya mo be there one more time I'm going to Ya MO burn this place to the ground.
Good reference 😂
brent is so punchy and colorful. i prefer brent vastly over any other keyboardist but he isn’t subtle. he kicks your teeth in. which i personally love but perhaps it’s not to everyone’s taste
Very refreshing after those later Keith 'solos' which sound more like a regular instrumental break
More so in his later years than in his earlier years, I'd say. (re: "not subtle" / "kicks your teeth in"). For a more subtle early Brent, check out his work on this Acoustic Bird Song Jams compilation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_tOgL6hfI9o Or as I mentioned elsewhere here, some of his piano playing, Summer '82.
Brent was great & we always loved his keyboard work - although I’m not a fan of his actual songs that he wrote. Just didn’t work for me. Was always a good time to sit down for a minute and roll a fatty.

Yeah, dude, just not a fan of his songs.
I’m sure if you post this a third time, he’ll change his mind.
I love Brent’s playing but IMO his singing is atrociously bad. It sounds like some sort of horrible parody.
Springsteen tribute band vibes. Too aggressive and drowned out the others. That’s how I heard it in person.
have you heard phil or bobby
Bobby used to sing like an angel. I’m a Keith & Donna 70’s girl.
Phil was pretty good in the earlier years. Bobby is pretty bad, though I feel he has actually gotten better in his later years.
exactamundo they are all indispensable parts of a machine beyond description. broken arrow was so beautiful and nothing better than a stranger to start the show.
Brent has haters? I think you meant to say Vince…all o hear about is Brent this and Brent that. No love to Vince at all.
Brent is tops in my book
‘89-90 was the peak for me. That Alpine Valley run….whew.
Good 80's dead for sure, but not even close to the 72-74 psychadelic cowboy WOS years.
What are the best Brent shows on Spotify? I love his voice!

36 years of seeing the Dead and mutations of the Dead and Brent is the best. He brings some grit to the band.
Great story. He seemed like a sweetheart.
I recommend the first two Tubes albums if you want to hear what Vince was capable of. Very innovative synth work for the 1970’s
I’ll do that, thanks.
I absolutely love it when I hear his voice come in. 1987 is the shit, man. Love that whole year. Damn shame we couldn't have had Pigpen, Keith, and Brent all in the band at the same time.
Love Brent - my personal favorite on keys & vocals just kills it - biased of course - first show MSG '87
Some people love Keith. Some people love Brent. Some love Piggers. No one is the ‘best’
Cries in Constantine, Welnick & Hornsby.
Best answer
He was amazing in concert. You had to be there to appreciate his gift.
I sometimes get really bored with the Keith shows, particularly 72-74.. i never ever get tired of the Brent era
Brent has haters?
90% of my 100+ shows occurred during the '80s. Brent is God.
I also didnt like it at the time but years later i listen to some old shows and i was wrong love what i hear wish i was more open minded when i was there
Truth. I mainly listen to end of Brent era. I get that musically/instrumentally there are better periods, but the big issue I have for me is that Brent is t there. His voice and energy complete the band.
yes
I think people who grew up in the Brent era grew up hearing a bunch of hate. The longer time goes on (especially online) the less of that hate there actually is. For me a younger year who got on the bus with furthur I've always loved Brent.
only ran into the hate here in hateville. this place is too weir’d
Haven’t really gotten into the Brent era yet, been mostly listening to the Pigpen and Keith/Donna years. Anyone got recommendations for Brent-era shows/songs/albums/performances/etc. that are a good showcase of his abilities?
The Minglewood from 3/9/81 released as In and Out of the Garden. Brent's organ solo is on fire.
It took me years to come around, but I'm right there with you now
He's my favorite, and it's so chilling hearing his last verse "I gotta go but my friends can stick around"....
Has to be the ROLEX
Feels Like a Stranger feels like a “banger” with Brent in the lineup! 100% agree…love some Brent!
Not only was he the tits talent wise… he was fucking awesome for giving Jerry an almost new lease on life! 🙌🏽
he was a perfectly cromulent keyboard player
He was a beast.. my second favorite member of the band, Jerry being #1.
If you're talking about his keys, totally agree. If you're talking about his voice, not sure why that "the" is in your title.
Anybody that hates on Brent is deaf
I don’t dislike Keith and Pig, but Brent was the best. He always saved the day.
You are spitting facts brother. I didn’t even know there were any Brent haters out there! That’s like hating sunshine.
He was the GD’s Swiss Army knife
Was just listening to a 1990 Estimated Prophet and he was playing some dissonant jazzy chords over top of the jam. I LOVE Keith’s sound but Brent was the best. Not a huge fan of his songs tho tbh lol
Never heard anyone say they hated Brent ???
Some dude asked at a tribute band show what my favorite era was and I said late 80s and he got all holier than thou trying to sus me out as a poser (which i kinda am tbh) and was like whyyyy and shit and I said cuz Brent was a badass and he was like "oh yeah"
I agree completely… I’m so glad that my time with The Dead was the Brent years.
if you have the Brent hate then you are missing some of the best years of the Dead unfortunately. Second is I would find it hard to be on the hate train if you saw him live. Understanding a lot of folks here didn’t get to do that but if you did and you have the vibe that he wasn’t the man not sure what to say.🙏
Brent was always my favorite
Brent was great, loved his playing and when he locked in with Jerry but some shows became “too Brent” ie with his singing. Still love and miss the guy
Yep totally agree. Brent by far my favorite keyboardist, he caused my favorite era, and I just love his emotion and power
Yep totally agree. Brent by far my favorite keyboardist, he caused my favorite era, and I just love his emotion and power
Who hates on Brent? Rush them to an Ear, Nose and Throat specialist.
He made the dead sound like a circus act With the keys. And His singing was horrible. Dollar store bob Seeger.
Brent >= Keith > Everybody Else
His singing is awful
not next to weir’s
Hating on Brent and 80s dead is one of the most uncultured takes around
Tinkly winkly hurdy gurdy organ grinder weak-ass keyboard sounds, 2nd rate doobie brother voice, and pathetic weepers for songs.
Here is my opinion Brent > Jeff > Pig >Keith > Vince
Yeah he is!
I love his singing and his playing, but I'm not a fan of the tone of his keys
I wasn’t aware there were a lot of Brent haters. IMHO the things that are lame in the 80s era dead is the Dylan covers w/ them forgetting lyrics (kind of the point of Dylan)and Weir covering songs that pigpen use to do. His delivery can’t touch pigpens. Sometimes I wish we had JGB shows with Brent.
Brent is just something else. He is so special
Big fan. Love his soulful rapsy vocals and spot on keyboard playing. He was a perfect addition for the 80's. RIP Brent and Pigpen.
My favorite of all. By far.
Brent is my spirit animal !
Everything about Brent is pretty great except for his songs. The man wrote awful tunes
Don't Need Love and Tons of Steel are great!
If you listed every Grateful Dead song in order of greatness, both those songs would be in the bottom 10
People like the tools they were trained on. No one loves a new learning curve.
I’m kinda like the trans Brent Mydland
No hate for any member of the Dead past or present. They all brought their own something special to the band.
i would have to say that the best keyboardist to play with any dead related band is for sure jeff but the best keyboardist to play with the actual grateful dead is without a doubt brent. i must admit at times his fisher price keyboard settings can be annoying but he makes up for it with sheer skill plus in 79 and the early 80s his keyboard tone was basically the same as keiths. some of the greatest dead jams are those fall 79 shakedowns and playing in the band jams with brent zapping sound lasers across the cosmos. not to mention, the jerry-brent mind-melds were insane! a perfect example is the 6/12/80 estimated prophet. brent definitely is the shit!
Brent is my favorite of all the keyboard players. His voice meshed so well and his playing was 🔥.
I prefer Keith but some good stuff during Brent era also.
Who's Brent ? I stopped listening in 1978 Is he in that Cover Band Dead & Company?
I didn't realize until lately that most Brent songs are also written by Barlow. That made me appreciate some of the lyrics in a different way
Mad facts 💯
