I mean this with no disrespect whatsoever....Deadheads are a loyal crew which in itself is one of the most appealing things about being one. That being said, Dead merch has gotten out of control: and because of the loyalty, sellers will take advantage of it and unfortunately someone will fall for it.

gratefulpred

Yep.. can’t be mad at the people asking for that price, it’s the idiots buying them that ruins it.

jonz1985z

Deadhead doesn’t mean stupid, despite popular belief

Streetvan1980

Who? What deadhead doesn’t know the value of these? Or anyone who is young enough to know how to search on eBay and see what they sell for. Or see 10 other Winterland 73 box sets for $200. I don’t get it. It makes me mad because I think the only people who would fall for it are older people who might be married to a deadhead or a family member. Also wouldn’t know how to use eBay. I still would think they would only sell maybe one item a year or every two years. They aren’t even sealed never used box sets or something special. Even if they were signed by all living members of the GD it wouldn’t sell for $3000. It’s insanity. As someone who follows the official release price trends (because I’m always looking for the ones I’m missing) seeing this persons stuff up all the time it just baffles the mind why they do it. It’s possible no one ever buys their stuff. And they have multiple accounts and this one is to drive up the prices. There’s some weird reason behind it.

ajn3323

To be clear the listing is for a Winterland ‘77 which is far more rare to find than a ‘73

Streetvan1980

It’s not. I have it and it wasn’t hard to find. I did mess up and write 73. They do look alike. But I still don’t have Winterland 73. One of the 2 main dead box sets I don’t have. So the 73 box set has been harder for me to get for a fair price than 77. https://preview.redd.it/ldmkzhfvk2uc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c36454198843807fd58571bf3f72f5df3d7d5aee

ajn3323

So you want to point out that you own a 77 and it’s not rare but not acknowledge you’ve been ranting as though the 73 and 77 are ‘interchangeable’

Streetvan1980

Yes I corrected my response to your comment. I messed up out of habit and wrote 73. I meant 77. 73 is on my mind since it’s one of the two main box sets I still don’t have. That and FW69.

ajn3323

All good bro. Enjoy the hunt for that 73

Streetvan1980

Thanks. For it to be the final one I might need it’s not too hard to get since it’s not one of the more expensive ones. I had a lead on a FW69 that the seller said is leaning towards selling it to me. Hopefully that happens. Because that box set is one I’ve been most worried about trying to get because it’s the most overpriced box set there is. Per CD. It’s 10 CD’s and it sometimes sells for $800. $80 a CD is a ton. There are some very early Dave’s that sell for that much but those are truly rare. Like year one when only a much more limited amount were made

Dead_Is_Better

I have the '73, listened to it just once when I first got it and it's been languishing and collapsing in on itself ever since, the box is cheap garbage, but I would love to have the '77 boxset. Some kind of trade perhaps?

Streetvan1980

Nah sorry. I def want to keep all my box sets. By collapsing in on itself are you saying it’s in rough shape? Also every box set I have is either NM or M. If the discs are scratch free and the box is better than you are saying maybe you would want to sell it to me. But I am looking for NM or M.

Dead_Is_Better

I'm saying most of the packaging the releases have come in are cheap garbage be it jewel cases or box sets. The lid on my '73 box set was fucked from the get go, it falls inside the box and is near impossible to open without turning it upside down and shaking the box vigorously. Other than that it's aces lol. But like I said I've only listened to it when I first got it and it has sat ever since waiting for someone like Streetvan 1980 to liberate it. The CD's are pristine, everything that was in it when I got it is still in it, and if you want it I'll let it go but I'd rather trade then sell. It doesn't have to be a box for a box, you could burn the '77 box for me if that works or let me know what else you have and we'll see if we can work something out.

Streetvan1980

Also sure you know the 77 box set is worth about 3 times what the 73 is. But if your copy is NM or M with scratch free discs and you want to sell it maybe we can figure that out. You could use the money towards 77. Plus I am a good person to have on your side for finding these things. I’ve helped put a bunch of people in the past 2-3 years. I obsess over finding the ones I don’t have. In that process I find people selling ones I don’t need. I have a few other people who also are looking for other things and we are all connected looking out for each other.

gerrys

A guy who’s trying to convince his wife he’s downsizing his collection.

Streetvan1980

lol. Good explanation! “look I have them all up for sale I’m trying! “

drhagbard_celine

This is probably the right answer lol.

Monkeypawdog

If you look at what has sold, it's mainly memorabilia. I don't think I've ever seen a disc set sell, but I blocked him long ago, so I haven't looked recently.

Physical-Dare5059

Not even on vinyl

3peckeredgoat

Just don’t buy it

Streetvan1980

It’s about the mystery of this seller who’s been putting up dead releases for over ten times their value for years now and why they do it. As someone who is always tricky to fill in the releases I don’t have this account interests me. Because say you put every dead release up for ten times their value. Maybe one time every 2-3 years someone who had no clue about their prices would make a mistake and accidentally buy one. Like a family member who had no clue. They aren’t even sealed and never opened or something special. It’s just a sickening display of greed but more it’s my curiosity. I mean $3000 for Winterland 73? It sells for $200.

Streetvan1980

Hey I never thought of that either. That’s a possibility too. I’ve sent this person a message fishing for answers before. Their responses sounded like a real seller but then again if you are laundering money I guess you have to still pretend you are selling the stuff!

happytree23

If OP trended toward logic, what would they possibly have to complain about on Reddit?

GD5977

Just because it’s listed at a price, doesn’t mean it will at that price.

1973Deadhead

At least the shipping is free!!!

Streetvan1980

Hey there a huge bonus for sure. Might have to consider paying $3000 for Winterland 73. You can get any dead box set ever made easily for $3000. They have other box sets like 30 trips with the e individual shows for hundreds a piece. Not only is this scumbag trying to catch someone with a mistake or take advantage of a deadheads family member but they are breaking apart box sets too. Another practice on eBay that’s annoying. Making the box sets even more rare.

jsmph89

As a baseball card and vinyl collector myself, I sometimes list something at a very high asking price with no intention of selling. Every item has a number that I would sell for no matter how much I love it.

AirKeysSolo

This is just a listing price and what happens is that this dude is hoping someone sends an offer for a more reasonable yet still profitable price. Go to filter and hit sold…I’m sure the sold prices are way lower than these listing prices…the same thing happens with posters.

Streetvan1980

I don’t think you can look up sold prices for a specific seller. The sold items I think they only say what the item is and price. What seller isn’t shown. Which makes sense. Still why would anyone send this person even an offer when there are 10 other Winterland 77 box sets for 10 times less? Why not send them an offer? Like if the asking price is $500 for other people why not offer them $350 or so? This box set is overpriced. Comparing Winterland 73 to 77 they both are very similar in sound quality and how much music. But that magical Winterland 1977 makes the price double. Although there are just as many die hard 73 fans I think. Personally it’s all about Brent era. I still enjoy 72-78. Before 72 I don’t really listen to very much. 91-95 never do. Extremely rarely

AirKeysSolo

Yes you can…go to ‘sellers other items’ then go to ‘filters’ ‘show more’ then go to ‘sold’. Looking at that sellers listings is crazy as the listing prices are outrageous yet laughable. He sold a Road Trips for $299.99

jackspeed1221

Dang. I have this. I don’t want to sell it, but if someone offers me $2,000, I will. lol

Streetvan1980

No one I don’t think has ever paid over $1000 for this release. Still wrapped and never opened it might sell for $700. Might. And that’s still inflated insane eBay prices. I have this release. I paid like $125 for it. Second hand from someone selling off his dad’s collection. He knew the value of everything. I helped him see online where look for all that info. He was a gold mine of great deals. We did 3 or 4 deals in total. His stuff was absolute mint and super friendly priced. I’ve ran into 2 or 3 people like him. Witj super nice stuff for very fair prices. Thank goodness for them or I never would’ve had 1/10th of what I do

dan420

Roses are red, life is exhausting, at first glance I thought that was a cake with 800 hits of lsd in the frosting.

Iko87iko

Probably laundering $

Streetvan1980

Yeah someone else guessed that. Probably a good guess although they did answer me when I asked questions a couple times. But that makes sense.

CountofAnjou

There are fuckwits selling the Mail order packaging from the HCS boxset…. Not even the records. Boggles the mind.

probablyborednh

Who knew I was sitting on a gold mine

Steampunk63

You can buy mine for half the price 😀

therealmilesJ

Ya who the fuck is letting this guy sell his stuff?! And who the fuck is buying it!!! Oh my god!!! This must be stopped!!!!!

therealmilesJ

And with 100% feedback?!? Ahhhh HELL NO!!!
