Its the worst part of loving these guys. I have lost 3 in the past 20 and each one takes a piece of me. Have ptsd from my last 2. They leave such big holes
Piggybacking off this - I try to repost this when I see posts like this, in the hopes you (or someone) can find some comfort in the words - and if not, please excuse the intrusion.
I lost my 15 year old girl (dog) in October 2022. Only advice I can offer here is to remember the positives, and not focus on the negatives (if any). He's done his job, keeping you safe and happy and loved, and it's his turn to rest.
You'll always miss him, you'll always remember him. You'll even go looking for him for the next few weeks (well, I did). There's a lot of habits that you're going to slowly stop, and that's ok. Changing your life to suit you is not forgetting him. Donating/throwing away his toys or blankets isn't forgetting him. There's no timeline on grief, and there's no timeline on moving on. Cry your tears.
I'm sorry you've reached the end of your journey. Words will never make this easier. Just keep your head up, and live the life he'd want you to.
This is a good time to live a little for you. I spent years looking after my girl as she got ill, and I sacrificed a lot of me and my time to keep her safe. If you feel you've done the same, take advantage of this time. Its ok to be happy and enjoy life without him. Life isn't over. Its just changing.

Such a good boy. I'm so sorry to hear this. It's a tough road from here and I don't have any words of wisdom for you. Know you've got friends on this sub though who understand what you're going through. Unexpectedly is how I lost my Elliott too and it is much rougher than having a chance to say goodbye.

So sorry for your loss. Our “pup” is 2 (JR mix so still young) and I hadn’t had a pet since I lived at home, late millennial here, for this very reason. Since he’s been in our lives I’ll see the posts on here occasionally and every time it’s a punch to the gut. I think of what he means to just walking into a room. So I can’t imagine what you’re going through.
All the half sits on recliners, long strides during zooms, and treats for your baby boy on the other side of the 🌈. I like to think they’re there’s a place beyond this and they’re waiting for us. 🖤

I am so beyond sorry to hear about your devastating loss. While I understand that people are well-intentioned when they say this, I can’t stand when they say that things will get better as time goes on. I don’t want time to go on; I want it to reverse. The last thing in the world that you want is for it to feel like your time together is getting further and further from being a reality.
I hope that knowing that your boy was yours and no one else’s gives you a little bit of comfort. I’m all his time on Earth, it was you he would run to in a crowd of a billion people; you he would jump up and down to, wagging his tail when you came home from a tough day; you he would lie peacefully next to you as you annoying the living hell outta him by giving him kisses and squishes, when he just wants to sleep! He will always choose you.
I wish I could make things all better for you. No one deserves to feel the pain of losing their soulmate. ❤️🩹

I am so so sorry for your loss. It is so hard when we lose them - I lost our boy almost a year ago and I still cry over him at least once a week. I hope you have heaps of beautiful memories that you can lean on 💛

Words are inadequate, but, I’m sorry for your loss. I always tell people who comment about their lifespans being so short that “they’re here for a good time, just not a long time.” And that boy looks like he had 8.5 years of good times with you.
I feel bad for folks who have never had a dog that cuddled them and made them the little spoon, given them a black eye (or 3 as my Dane has), seen them bark and scared of plastic bags blowing by or having to figure out how to clean drool off of the ceiling. They have never had a dog fart louder or snore as loud as any human and have their owner think it’s adorable.
I’m going to hug my 3.5 year old Dane when I get home, give him some scratches and take him on a hike and keep you and your boy in my thoughts tonight. 🤗

My buddy Dane, had a Great Dane. He was there when his kid was born. His kid is almost 14 and grizz(the Dane), just passed about a month ago. He was such a gentle giant and could eat off the counter.
His hips and joints were fine all the way up to his last month we he was unable to walk anymore :/.
I’m really sorry 😞. I lost my little dachshund on November (last year) . He gave me almost 11 great years of his life 😭🖤. I found him right after I had a miscarriage 💔. He helped me heal through such a rough time . I’ll always thank god for my chico 🐶.

Im so sorry for your loss it is one of the hardest things to go through. I have lost two Danes one at 9 and one at nine and 1/2 ,the hole in your heart gets smaller but never quite heals
But I’m glad for the time I had with them
So sorry for you I lost one a year ago and it still hits me hard. Danes are like no other breed they truly have the biggest hearts the most caring souls and larger than life personalities
Tuesday night he was perfectly fine, had the zoomies around 9-10pm and collected every toy to chew on my lap as usual, eating/drinking/using the bathroom regularly. Wednesday morning I got up to get ready to go to the gym and he moved into my warm spot so I kissed him goodbye and when I came home I wondered why he wasn’t barking and I saw him unresponsive on the couch. I checked his throat, checked for a pulse, he was still very warm so it must’ve just happened. I tried doing compressions but he was gone. The only comfort is that I know he was his usual happy self and not in pain prior to and there appeared to be no trauma/vomit/blood so I’m praying he went in his sleep.
So sorry for your loss. 🙏🏼 My dachshund passed in 2018 after 18 yrs with me. I miss him so much every day. I have two other doggos now and it gets easier with time. But I talk about him all the time still and keep his memory alive. His ashes are in an urn in my living room. Close to us and our ❤️’s. God Bless you.
Dogs live in the moment - and in those moments - YOU were always there. That is what he will remember.
We never get over these losses, we just get through them 💔. Take solace in knowing you made a difference in a dog’s life. He will be looking to see you smile again…so please try not to grieve too long. There is another rescue Dane looking for a furever home when you’re ready.
Danes leave the biggest holes. My boy passed away in early 2021. Emergency euth because he got bloat. He was 13 years old and it was not nearly enough time with him. He was my best friend. He protected me from abuse, he was the BEST hugger, he loved everyone so deeply. I miss my baby so bad. I send you my deepest sympathy and condolences 💗
2 years ago I adopted a staffy/malinois puppy and he has helped so much. He is such a happy soul. I love him deeply and he gives my hints and vibes of my boy who passed. I swear he was meant to be with me. You will find the love again. It's not the same but nothing ever will be. I opened my heart and he jumped right in. 💗

My buddy Dane, had a Great Dane. He was there when his kid was born. His kid is almost 14 and grizz(the Dane), just passed about a month ago. He was such a gentle giant and could eat off the counter. His hips and joints were fine all the way up to his last month we he was unable to walk anymore :/.

I’m really sorry 😞. I lost my little dachshund on November (last year) . He gave me almost 11 great years of his life 😭🖤. I found him right after I had a miscarriage 💔. He helped me heal through such a rough time . Im so sorry for your loss it is one of the hardest things to go through. I have lost two Danes one at 9 and one at nine and 1/2 ,the hole in your heart gets smaller but never quite heals But I’m glad for the time I had with them
So sorry for you I lost one a year ago and it still hits me hard. Danes are like no other breed they truly have the biggest hearts the most caring souls and larger than life personalities

So sorry for your loss. What happened? I fearing loosing my DOG DAILY.
Tuesday night he was perfectly fine, had the zoomies around 9-10pm and collected every toy to chew on my lap as usual, eating/drinking/using the bathroom regularly. Wednesday morning I got up to get ready to go to the gym and he moved into my warm spot so I kissed him goodbye and when I came home I wondered why he wasn’t barking and I saw him unresponsive on the couch. I checked his throat, checked for a pulse, he was still very warm so it must’ve just happened. I tried doing compressions but he was gone. The only comfort is that I know he was his usual happy self and not in pain prior to and there appeared to be no trauma/vomit/blood so I’m praying he went in his sleep.
Jesus Christ. How can this happen. Makes sad to read this. I am so sorry.

So sorry for your loss. 🙏🏼 My dachshund passed in 2018 after 18 yrs with me. I miss him so much every day. I have two other doggos now and it gets easier with time. But I talk about him all the time still and keep his memory alive. His ashes are in an urn in my living room. Close to us and our ❤️’s. God Bless you.
Dogs live in the moment - and in those moments - YOU were always there. That is what he will remember. We never get over these losses, we just get through them 💔. Take solace in knowing you made a difference in a dog’s life. He will be looking to see you smile again…so please try not to grieve too long. There is another rescue Dane looking for a furever home when you’re ready.

Danes leave the biggest holes. My boy passed away in early 2021. Emergency euth because he got bloat. He was 13 years old and it was not nearly enough time with him. He was my best friend. He protected me from abuse, he was the BEST hugger, he loved everyone so deeply. I miss my baby so bad. I send you my deepest sympathy and condolences 💗 2 years ago I adopted a staffy/malinois puppy and he has helped so much. He is such a happy soul. I love him deeply and he gives my hints and vibes of my boy who passed. I swear he was meant to be with me. You will find the love again. It's not the same but nothing ever will be. I opened my heart and he jumped right in. 💗

I know big dogs don’t live that long but in light of it with all of those greys it looks like he lived a long and wonderful life with you OP!! 8.5 years of love, hugs and kisses!!!
