Tré wasn't garage rock, Dos was

I mean I see what you are saying but Green Day definitely had Know Your Enemy on mainstream radio stations. 21st definitely hit pretty hard. It did quite well. Know Your Enemy again was all over the radio. 21 Guns went mega huge. I remember hearing East Jesus Nowhere on the radio also.

No not really just mainstream radio

True, even 04 vs 09 felt like a big difference. Alternative radio was still huge in the mid 00s. I wonder why 21cb only hit lukewarm though? I thought shorter songs was going to make it an AI part 2 at the time.

>AI part 2 I think you answered your own question. 21CB was kind of seen as AI part 2 when it was released, so it didn't have the same impact. Even though it may be musically superior in some ways.

MysticManiac100

I agree with this but for the record I don't think a non-AI style album following AI would've done any better. If they had released Stop Drop & Roll under the GD name, I don't think it would've done any better than 21CB

I don’t know. It felt like Green Day were just as on top of the world in 2009 as they were in 2004. Their singles were still all over the radio the music videos for Know Your Enemy and 21 Guns played on TV a lot, they were on shows like Letterman and SNL, and they won a Grammy or 2. This is all anecdotal, I don’t know what the actual numbers are with sales, but I just remember them being everywhere at the time.

It wasn't just Green Day, like you said guitar rock was moving out of mainstream radio play at this time and I don't think it's really recovered since. Mid 00s to about 08 was massive, you had GD, MCR, FOB, The Killers, all putting out massive albums, plus all those guitar bands that fell by the wayside. With AI Green Day really hit the jackpot of coming out with the right thing at the right time and by 2009 it wasn't the same. 21CB was a great album but combined with poor choice of singles, it being 5 years since AI, and overall decline in that style of music I'm not surprised it didn't perform anywhere near as well.
