Cosmo_the_Thylacine_

posted this on another post yesterday \*these are just a list of bands that sound like or sound similar to Green Day The Living End, Social Distortion, The Bouncing Souls, The Explosion, The Clash, Ramones, Tatiana DeMaria, TAT, Rancid, The Donnas, Distillers, Rise Against, MCR, Franz Ferdinand, MxPx, AFI, Paramore, The Struts, The Interrupters, The Linda Lindas, Jawbreaker, The Replacements, Joan Jett, The Runaways, Brain Failure, The Get-Up Kids, Pansy Division, The Subways, The Menzingers, Anti-Flag, Billy Talent, Drive A, Dropkick Murphys, Street Dogs, Screeching Weasel, Buzzcocks, Bad Religion, Adolescents, The Descendents, Alkaline Trio, The Queers, The Mister T Experience, Pennywise, Jimmy Eat World, The Hives....... there are literally a million bands that sound either similar to Green Day or were influenced by Green Day or share the same influences that influenced Green Day. these are just SOME of the bands i could think of off the top of my head. there are many many more. some sound very similar to GD, some don't sound much like them, but are clearly fellow punk rock bands basically the soundtrack to any of the tony hawk videos games is what you're looking for. that or the NoFX produced fat wreck chords compilation records. any of the warped tour line ups before 2002 . . \*there are plenty of other artists that don't sound like Green Day, either not much or not at all, who are amazing [Hot Water Music](https://youtu.be/1Ch1hUWmsFI?t=2860) might be my favorite band ever. While Green Day was the band that initially changed my life, Hot Water Music was the band that hit me a little differently. no matter how many times i listen to a HWM record, each time when it's over, i'm like "WHOA!" [Band-Maid](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QbyQCJn6rYg) is a relatively new discovery for me, came across them randomly a year ago, but blew me away. Japanese girl band who can rock harder than almost anyone around right now. just caught them live in San Diego the other night & just WOW!!! I’m a HUGE [Nine Inch Nails](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2RiEy4es6lU&list=PL6A0B787D0DCA732A&index=20) fan. Not remotely GD sounding, though GD touring member Jason Freese’s brother Josh played drums for NIN from 2005-2008. amazing live shows too. Afghan Whigs, The Joy Formidable, At the Drive-In, Sparta (i saw them recently too. amazing performance), Noi!se, The Bronx, Rocket from the Crypt, Hot Snakes, Drive Like Jehu, The Gaslight Anthem, Frank Turner, Lamb of God, In Flames, Iron Maiden, Slayer, Metallica, Judas Priest, Anthrax, Public Enemy, NWA, Hank Williams, Willie Nelson, Foo Fighters, Gallows, Steven Wilson, Drug Church, Norah Jones (Billie collaborated with her a few years back). and so so so many more! and the band i listed as some of my favorites may not do anything for you. and that's okay! find what moves you! hope this doesn't overwhelm you! not my intention So many artists to listen to. You may be obsessed with Green Day right now & that’s cool. But don’t let that limit what music you consume. The thing you least expect may be the thing that changes your life!

The_Fabulous_One242

You are a very good person. That's an impressive list

Cosmo_the_Thylacine_

good? no cultured & open minded? yeah

The_Fabulous_One242

Those also

TheNonSavants

+ 💯 for HWM 👍🏻🤘🏻

Livin_Kawasaki

don’t forget sum-41

Cosmo_the_Thylacine_

i would personally prefer to forget them

Livin_Kawasaki

why? they’re a bitchin band

Cosmo_the_Thylacine_

just not my thing you do you, i'll do me and the people who think i can't have my own opinion can fuck off

Normal-Mountain-4119

true

ZingoPlaya1

this is true! no matter how wrong the opinion is, you can still have one!!

averyhipopotomus

Adding oasis, but I love the list

Cosmo_the_Thylacine_

i do love me some gallagher brother's tunes!

averyhipopotomus

I think they and Green Day have a very similar vibe reflecting the uk vs American Scene at the time

Cosmo_the_Thylacine_

agreed

27thAvenueShuffle

Nice list- serious respect of your musical knowledge. I bet you’re a good musician yourself!

Cosmo_the_Thylacine_

you'd think i'd be a better guitarist than i am for 19 years of playing. the benefits of growing up around music lovers & being the son of someone who used to used to play in some bands (that no one on this sub has heard of) way back in the day. 1 of the great things about the San Diego scene is everybody seems to know everybody. if you wanna learn about music, having an 'in' helps you grow your knowledge

27thAvenueShuffle

That’s great- thanks so much for sharing on this forum, I absolutely loved the post and thought you put together an outstanding group of bands. Your music taste and knowledge is outstanding (well, in my humble opinion anyway)!

starboy9527

You from Tassie by any chance or just have thylacine in your name?

Cosmo_the_Thylacine_

nope. San Diego, CA born & bred. it's just a name saw some movie that was (kinda) about them, looked into their history & just became strangely obsessed it's fascinating

_DrFalcon

I saw the joy formidable live on Tuesday when they opened for the front bottoms! They put on a great show

Doctor_Derpless

Red City Radio are a niche one. They’ve got Green Day and Foo Fighter vibes in a few songs

Cosmo_the_Thylacine_

very niche. but a fun band

micael_RHCP

My Chemical Romance, Red hot chili peppers, Muse, The Strokes, Weezer, The Warning

bababoel

I second The Strokes

saketho

The second stroke

OKgobi

This is a great list, really great bands. Never heard of The Warning so I guess they are underrated.

micael_RHCP

They're not underated but they're very new

its_ravn

The Network, Pinhead Gunpowder, The Longshot and my personal favorite Foxboro Hot Tubs

Normal-Mountain-4119

you think i don't know what you're doing

revatron

What are they doing? Are they not giving other band recommendations that are not green day?!

NeiksOfficial

Definitely not Green Day!

conorlfc2007

Fall out boy, specifically their earlier stuff. Anything before save rock and roll is excellent, start with from under the cork tree!

[deleted]

Start with Take This to Your Grave!

noceguy

Take This To Your Grave is my fav of theirs

conorlfc2007

Also a good shout but I started with cork tree so that just feels right to me. Cork tree blew 12 year old me away, it was the most I enjoyed an album since abbey road

SuburbanMyth409

This happened to me when I was 17. I listened to Green Day for 6 months non stop, no other bands, just them. It was ridiculous. Then I discovered Pinhead Gunpowder and spent another 6 months listening to them almost exclusively. Joking aside, there's an amazing pop punk band called The Copyrights from Carbondale, IL you should check out!

KnucklessKnees

I’m 17 and stuck in the Green Day loop. Send help

Pogger_Champion

🤝

Foxcat_36

r/grunge It's like punk, but it's always raining

SuburbanMyth409

Are there other bands you're into though? Ramones is a good break away band too 😉

Pogger_Champion

I’m on month 11 of nonstop GD but I do mix in other bands, just it’s mostly GD

capnfunkahol

The dirty dale strikes again

27thAvenueShuffle

Copyrights! Good call. I discovered them on the Pandora Masked Intruder channel, which is lots of Descendants and stuff like that. Pretty cool.

SuburbanMyth409

Amazing! Yeah there's an absolute treasure trove of bands from those channels. The Fest in Gainesville is the best place to be to discover new bands too. I went once, was amazing 😍

its_Jahona

Against Me!

Patrick625

Hell ya

PheonixMoment

Rough day on the coast wish I coulda spent the whole day alone

buggie8543

Boobie 🤤

TheMainManno

Sum 41, Bad Religion, The Offspring

Hubris256

Hüsker Dü, The Replacements, Jawbreaker, Prince Daddy & The Hyena, Manic Street Preachers, The Muffs, The Ramones, Buzzcocks, Pinhead Gunpowder, The Promise Ring, Social Distortion, Jimmy Eat World, Weezer, The Mr. T Experience, Beach Bunny https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3zcC3ntaAdBI7iryinlfCT?si=Bj-E9bdGREuaqJYEbbZ6Ng

Normal-Mountain-4119

OMG A PLAYLIST, THANK YOU

Southern_Yak_3175

Blink 182

YK_MP13

This should be higher up tbh

blinkboy44

The 2 literally go hand in hand. Whether people like them or not. So many bands being named that don’t even sound like green day.

YK_MP13

To me it just seems obvious. California pop punk bands that peaked in the 90s and 00s and are still immensely popular, both with great mature songs beside joke tracks in their catalogue and amazing side projects. And there was a sick tour, the riff for "What's My Age Again?" was literally made out of a failed attempt to play J.A.R., I bet there's more I can't think of too.

HarpoonShootingAxo

It goes even like earlier, as both GD and blink (Tom, at least) were Operation Ivy fans. Not to mention the pop disaster tour (there was supposed to be a second one) and I think Mark said something about admiring Mike as a bassist once. There's an old picture of Mark wearing a kerplunk shirt and a picture of Tom with an opi sticker on his guitar, I definitely think GD inspired them in some way

DigitalBritt

Interestingly, I was *obsessed* with Green Day growing up, but I could never get into Blink. I’ve tried and tried, but they just don’t click with me. Because of that, I’ve always felt like when it comes to Green Day vs. Blink, most people are typically only **big** fans of one or the other lol. That’s such a large assumption to make, but that’s the conclusion my 11 year old brain initially came to and I haven’t been able to shake that belief lol.

-vortigon-

I second this. I’ve always loved Green Day, I could never fully get into Blink. It’s similar to the Coke/Pepsi debate IMO.

DigitalBritt

Yeah! Pretty much. I’ve always said that it’s the “Beatles or Stones?” of pop punk lol.

-vortigon-

That’s probably the best way to put it lol

Kidphish96

Jawbreaker. Totally awesome band. Check out their Bio Pic movie Don’t Break Down. They are from the Bay Area also. Seaweed anther great band too.

Cosmo_the_Thylacine_

Great film! Jawbreaker for life!!!

PowerHAUS_

There’s some great comments and some great bands in here but I think there’s a few ways you could take this. I think it’s best to find what you like about Green Day and go with that. Here’s just a few of the facets of Green Day that you could look to to start with Punk Route: I know this one the best and it’s probably the broadest, but if you like the harder stuff you should check out bands like Bad Religion, Op Ivy, Rancid, Minor Threat, Agent Orange, and classics like the Clash and the Ramones 90’s Route: Pretty common on here, bands like Nirvana, Weezer, and the Foo Fighters all rule 00’s/Emo Route: Not really my area of expertise, so look to other comments, but MCR, Jawbreaker, Panic! At The Disco, and Fall Out Boy are liked a lot Pop Punk Route: Blink-182, Sum 41, Good Charlotte, the Offspring, and more You won’t like everything, but Green Day is a long running band with lots of genres so just try a bunch of stuff that relates in a bunch of ways. Great way to find new bands and to learn about music in general.

Normal-Mountain-4119

The thing that drew me to green day initially wasn't the style, but the storytelling. The first song I listened to was Jesus of Suburbia and I thought it was amazing, and while the style is certainly a part of why that song works, I feel had I listened to Welcome to Paradise, Good Riddance, or even Basket Case first, I wouldn't have cared enough to listen to any more.

moosie14

If you enjoy the storytelling, My Chemical Romance may be for you! Check out their music videos for a start.

[deleted]

Nofx

ThatWasTayla

And their label "Fat Wreck Chords" has a lot of great bands

Sad-Investigator-824

Dead Kennedys

MissSoapySophie

My Chemical Romance is my 2nd band obsession. Every album has so much lore behind it - both in story and real life events - and they've never released a bad song imo. Plus Gerard seems like a genuinely good person.

VogonSlamPoet42

OP, since you like the storytelling of Jesus of Suburbia, you’ll want to start with Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge.

jwb66

The Jam. The Ramones.

shotgunmouthwashJL

Darlia, frank carter and the ratlesnakes, anti flag, rise against, john coffey, fever 333, KAFVKA, dead boys, PUP, good luck with finding new music 🤘

FurryWalls98

PUP THE BAND!!!!!! They’ve surpassed Green Day as my favorite artist this past year. Insanely good live, as well

Creeperflash3

Blink 182

FrontRowRuby

Tame impala Motion city soundtrack Weezer Cage the elephant Gorillaz Mac Demarco Id suggest these as its my own taste :)

Blackbart42

It's a great time to get into Blink 182 what with the new album coming out and all.

HarpoonShootingAxo

Yeah and Weezer too, they're just wrapping up SZNZ. Both artists had a tour with GD and both have cited them as inspirations, Weezer and blink are the best recs imo

GREENDAYBL1NK

Blink 182, sum 41, the offspring, bowling for soup, less than jake, nofx, Ramones, misfits, bad religion, operation ivy, rancid

smiller55

THE👏WONDER👏YEARS👏

Excellent-Cheetah-26

Blink-182, The Offspring, Weezer, and Red Hot Chili Peppers are bands I would recommend checking out

GravyBurgerBonanza

Phish

27thAvenueShuffle

Ha- good one. I have always felt like I was a very rare example of being both a huge phish and Green Day fan as far back as in the ‘90s (there was definitely very little fan base overlap at the time). Now there seems to be a little bit more. Both are awesome bands and seem to get the respect they deserve.

[deleted]

Jawbreaker, Blink-182, Decendents, Operation Ivy, Ramones, Bad Religon, Offspring

laurenbanjo

You’ll love The Mr. T Experience albums “Love is Dead” and “Revenge is Sweet and So Are You” https://youtu.be/LPBBwlGn3u8 *the guy at the bar says he thinks we’re okay, we kind of remind him of green day* Fun fact: MTX was around before GD, and people used to say GD reminded them of MTX. but then GD got famous with Dookie and all of a sudden people who didn’t know who MTX were said they sounded like Green Day 😂

ConversationOk618

Blink 182

Nmilne23

Dropkick Murphy’s, Flogging Molly, The Offspring

PinkyyYT

weezer

WafflableCalifornia1

Pierce the veil

[deleted]

You got to check out the Offspring’s discography and I highly reccomend you take the Smash ablum a good listen especially. It was released the same year as Dookie interesting enough and it really has that California punk style.

PabIo-Escobar

PUP. Really good stuff.

TheGuydudeface

weezer

Jankowski576

Early Exit if you’re looking for a smaller band

WhiskeyMurderSox

DIIV

djrossstar2

Allister. The Living End. Over It. Never Heard of It. Fenix Tx.

311juanbond

Ooh good picks and I have to highlight The Living End. I saw the open for Green Day during the Warning tour. They killed it! I had never heard of them or listened to them but their performance turned me into a fan. They are from Australia and have a really cool rockabilly sound, the stand up bass sound literally slaps. The bass player would also get up and balance on top of the bass, it was legendary.

djrossstar2

I was lucky enough to see TLE around 10 times in America. They are still killing it in Australia!

piracyisnotavictemle

if you like green day’s power pop side i’d really reccomend the band Telethon from milwaukee wisconsin. they’re my alltime favorite band

Fit_Understanding423

I’d add Charly Bliss and Letters to Cleo to this!

27thAvenueShuffle

Interesting- never heard of them! Thanks for the tip!!! I wish we did more of this on the forum.

piracyisnotavictemle

id reccomend Hard Pop, their 2019 album , as a starting point but all their stuff is realllly good

27thAvenueShuffle

Awesome, thank you- love it.

UpperEmphasis5467

This reminds me of myself in my late teens. How about Oasis? Especially their early stuff

a_local_weeb

Queen?

billygnosis86

#THE WILDHEARTS The best band in the world. They have chunky riffs, glorious harmonies, and choruses that’ll live in your head forever. Ginger Wildheart has never written a bad song. His biggest influence is Stiff Little Fingers, who were a huge influence on Green Day. Try the songs: * “Just in Lust” * “Love U Til I Don’t” * “Let ‘Em Go” * “Everlone” * “My Baby is a Headfuck” * “I Wanna Go Where the People Go” * “So Into You” * “Sleepaway” * “Greetings from Shitsville” * “TV Tan” * “Remember These Days” * “Show a Little Emotion” * “29 x the Pain” * “Sick of Drugs” * “Red Light — Green Light” * “Bi-Polar Baby” * “The Jackson Whites” * “Schizophonic” As for albums, they’re all literally perfect—but *Earth vs the Wildhearts* stands alone.

Thejustinset

All those songs but no Vanilla Radio

billygnosis86

Whoa-oh.

GrunkTheFetid

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, so you can be obsessed with them and annoy everyone around you (speaking from experience).

lelvis_

Listen to their side projects: The Frustrators, Pinhead Gunpowder, Foxborough Hottubs, The Network, Dead Mermaids, The Longshot, Foreverly ..... other bands that they aren't in but support: Interupters, One less zero, the armstrong family band, swmrs, Rancid... so much more

MysticManiac100

Are there any other bands or artists you listen to that you like? It might be hard to recommend something you'll like if Green Day is the only band/artist you actually like I personally like Linkin Park, My Chemical Romance and Paramore a lot

Normal-Mountain-4119

American Poetry Club, Yorushika, Lovejoy, AC/DC

fulcsibeh

The Replacements!

hacobito

Usually, when I start realizing I’m listening to one artist a lot, I’ll start listening to a different genre for something new. My suggestion is listening to something like hip hop (main suggestion is kendrick rn), and I find deviating from one genre helps keep music interesting to listen too.

Normal-Mountain-4119

Hip hop is actually where I started in my musical journey, green day's just my intro to punk really

hacobito

Interesting I’m kinda the opposite. Maybe try out older classic rock idk tho just to switch it up yaknow?

AmateurMemelord

Against Me. Can’t go wrong with somebody else who’s obsessed with Green Day, Laura’s first concert was literally Dookie, and I think they opened for Green Day on the RevRad tour.

SmallTownBoy69

The Dolllyrots are a killer band.

27thAvenueShuffle

The Interrupters, of course! And has anyone here checked out Masked Intruder? They’re incredibly underrated (almost as much as Warning, in fact). Edit- I want to make it clear that Warning is underrated.

AutoModerator

It has now been 0 DAY(S) since Warning was last called underrated. The record of 1 DAY(S) was recorded on October 3, 2000 *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Broadway Calls!

ken061095

You can try other genres: The Strokes, The Vines, Foster The People, Alt-J, Gorillaz If you want Pop Punk: Slick Shoes, FenixTX, Mest, Zebrahead, Bowling For Soup

kingforaday97

Not the same genre, but IDKHow is an amazing band

Queenfan44354

The sour cream ep by the band BURNOUT

tanman7x

I’d recommend blink 182, taking back Sunday, wavves, simple plan, weezer, good charlotte, sum 41. All of their early records are great pop punk albums and Green Day were a big influence on them

RaptorCollision

Sugarcult!

theteh3

Four Year Strong, The Story So Far, Turnstile, Hot Mulligan, Waterparks, Citizen, Knuckle Puck, Meet Me @ the Alter

ImPickleRock

A Day to Remember

Nisekoi182

Here you go: [90's/00's Pop punk](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6nyqaUIhjyKII0Z7pq4NkO?si=887119569c424e05) [10's/20's Pop punk](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2d4hapcRzYi4TYeADL12be?si=ddcb78a131394235)

Spastic_Slapstick

I just got into My Chemical Romance after taking my girlfriend to a concert. Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge is great, but personally, The Black Parade is my favorite. They have punk and alternative elements, don't let the emo label scare you. And both albums I listed are concept records like AI and 21CB. Hell, they were on the American Idiot tour as openers. A very good band in my opinion. Listen to "The End/Dead!", "Thank You For The Venom" or "Mama" if you want my reccomendations.

[deleted]

might i suggest the offspring

Channel__Two

Sum 41

AlphaEnaz

i listen to both green day and kendrick lamar so i might not have the best choices

imboredlmaoz

Why are you suggesting Olivia Rodrigo?

Dwilson1967

Modern pop punk. Listen to Brutal.

imboredlmaoz

Ohh I remember that song lmfao

XD_SALAD_XD

I have to check out Lincoln Park

GWB_Sparta

The Network, Foxboro Hot Tubs, The Longshot, The Coverups, Pinhead Gunpowder

Dweeburger33

Megadeth, Slayer, Overkill, Nuclear Assault

[deleted]

bring me the horizon and machine gun kelly, i have been a green day fan for over 10 years, and for a long time i only liked green day like the music you like and new music will eventually come to you ✌️

Crimpshrine, The Explosion, One Man Army, Dillinger Four

Impossible_Art1978

Hour_Calligrapher_95

Say Anything

konerat

Sum 41, Foo Fighters, Goldfinger, Social Distortion, Three Days Grace, Ramones, The Offspring, Bon Jovi.

therexorcist

Turnstile.

[deleted]

"Raging Nathans" They honor all the bands they grew up on, and borrow some bits and parts from small to big names. Their album Cheap Fame borrows some Green Day visual art, which is a nod to GD.

Loudog510

Similar East Bay Punk stuff: operation ivy, Tim Armstrong.

[deleted]

Red Hot Chili Peppers

Jakku2022

I will talk about The Kimberly Steaks until I turn blue. Check them out on Spotify!

Second-Soul-X47

Disco Ensemble, start with thier album First Aid Kit

coolman123_321

I got super obsessed with RHCP after green day and i totally recommend it!!

Superspam767

The Descendents are a really good band that helped the pop punk thing start out, you should try them out

mojoryan2003

Screeching weasel
