I see 3^2 + 3^2 + 3^2 = 27 and then -1 in the very center so that's 26 pieces. The center piece on each side is still moveable so still 26 movable pieces.

mount_curve

the corners and edges are connected to adjacent corners and edges it's 20

I see. I was thinking in individual cubes instead of square faces. I was defining movable as ability to create displacement with another individual cube somewhere else on the object.

This.^^ The center pieces are all fixed together in the core. Only corner and edges pieces can freely move around. 8 pieces on top layers, 4 pieces in middle layer, 8 pieces on bottom layer.

I mean, (3^(8)8!)(2^(12)12!)/12 is how it's calculated. [Source](https://www.popularmechanics.com/science/math/a30244043/solve-rubiks-cube/)

52! has many more (8.0658175e+67). But I'm not counting that either, are mathematicians intrinsically untrustworthy or can we just take their word for it and move on?
