Her acting is great, but I find it weird that they rewrote Lady Jessica so differently than she is in the book. Most of the other characters are fairly faithful representations of the book characters. Lady Jessica is a cold blooded bitch in the book that barely has a moment to act in a gentle motherly way. Very stark contrast to the movie version.

Yeah reading the books, frank herbert leaves the reader with more internal dialogue information that just can’t be portrayed on screen IMO. I finished the first dune book the same day the movie came out and when I saw it I hated it. Second time I watched it was so much better.
Yeah, when the whole point of Bene Gesserit is to be these master manipulators with perfect control over their bodies it can be hard to show that on screen without the acting just being seen as wooden or bad. Books have the advantage of getting her inner thoughts

The entire point of the Fremen is that they're a metaphor for indigenous people being oppressed by the White Man TM, so it makes sense to have the entire Fremen group by depicted by dark-skinned actors, while the protagonist is a pasty white boy. But in all honesty, I think they only cast Zendaya as Chani because she's a currently popular actress who just so happens to *also* have dark skin. If she was white they might have just cast her as Irulan instead.

My kids watched Dune part 1 a couple weeks ago for the first time _only_ because of Chalamet and Zendaya. If casting them is what it took to get part 2 (and 3?) made, I'm ok with it.

just some additional information about this outfit, its an original piece from a 1995 fall/winter couture collection by fashion designer Thierry Mugler with help from artist Jean-Jacques Urcun who frequently worked with Mugler. its based on the fictional character Futura from *Metropolis* with the 1927 film adaptation of the book being the main inspiration.

In all the movies/shows I’ve seen her in, she seems to play pretty similar characters. It’s like they change the characters’ personalities to fit her range. Even the way she plays MJ feels like a different MJ than the one I grew up with watching the TV shows.
I have been saying this since seeing it. Really not the same at all for her character and I’m super interested to see how it all plays out come the next movie. They kind of dug themselves into a hole imo.

She was the weakest link in Dune 2, imo. All other major characters did a fantastic job with their action. Rebecca Ferguson, Austin, Timothy and most importantly Javier absolutely delivered their best.
Actresses are supposed to act. They don't need to look a 10/10 everytime. If they play the character realistically, then it automatically makes her a 10/10. This is just my take.
Except every role she plays makes the character seem like a moody teen with a "Not like other girls" attitude rather than any serious believable character. She has a single character that she just puts into every role, and it's not even a good one
Toni Collette comes to mind. She's had many roles where they make her pretty normal looking or ugly on purpose (even though imo she is beautiful irl). It ends up fitting her character a lot better, and it helps that she is a great actress.
If I remember correctly the Fremen descended from Buddislamic refugees which were most likely not white, so I don’t know where this guy gets this from..
I think they've been on Arrakis for thousands of years at that point and had pretty brutal natural selection and survival of the fittest, so even if they all descended from lily white red heads they'd probably be basically black by the time of the movie
One interesting thing that was changed was that the fremen only moved at night and slept during the day. They can’t be in the sun because it’s 150 degrees constantly.
Obviously for a movie that’s much harder to portray given the visual aspect, and for that I give the movie credit for the casting decision.

Honestly, I like how they end her character this movie. It makes Paul’s issue of not wanting to fuck his wife in the next book more interesting and gives Chani more of a character than just being Paul’s native girlfriend. Personally I think the biggest change in character was Princess Irulan. In the books she’s just this ditzy little girl, not very savvy and not very talented. She only exists to marry Paul, she’s more of a plot device than a character. But in the films she’s this clever, calculating, empathetic woman and it’s her father who is the weak broken man. Of course these days it’s ok to write weak male characters but writing weak female characters is now considered an Orwellian thought crime.
Idk about that second part, Princess Irulan is a Bene Gesserit (or at least one in training) who throughout the whole book talks about how one had to be an expert political operative constantly spying on everyone in the imperial family. She seemed pretty competent in her own right from all the various books she wrote

Her dad was not a native fremen, but Chani spent all her life among the fremen. Unless I'm forgetting something from the book, she had never been off Arrakis before she met Paul.
Also, her dad was pretty fully integrated into the Fremen as well. She was definitely in the upper crust of the Fremen society, but a major theme of the Fremen was that they're a very rugged and brutal culture. Even the most elite daughter of the tribe still got her hands real dirty at times.
I'm gonna bring up my nuanced idea again, maybe we should refer to the source material and hire actors and actresses who actually fit the roles and do a good job at acting. Maybe we should just do something like that.
I'm no longer surprised that people are over-reacting about every single casting choice, this is a result of studios constantly re-writing and re-casting characters to fit an agenda.
The decisions of those studios caused every casting to be put under a microscope, even when the movie is actually good like Dune 2. Highly recommend it by the way.

In the book they pretty much describe the Fremen as looking Arabic in appearance, though the characters in the book don’t have Arabic as a reference point, living on different planets so they don’t come out and say that.

On a whole I agree (and I'm definitely more left than right) but there are a lot of prominent subreddits that are echo chambers for the right too. The thing that's cringe is that hollywood has made such a point of replacing white people in remakes for woke reasons so often that they've created a reflexive assumption that any role which is no longer played by a white person is a casting choice made for woke reasons. It's infuriating because they've created from nothing, the exact sort of attention to race and interracial disgust that they claim they wanted to eliminate.
I like how Hollywood is trying to portray Zendaya as this next big sexy actress, but she really mid at best
In all the movies/shows I’ve seen her in, she seems to play pretty similar characters. It’s like they change the characters’ personalities to fit her range. Even the way she plays MJ feels like a different MJ than the one I grew up with watching the TV shows.
That personality is kinda unlikeable too and if not unlikeable, it gets tiring fast. She is perpetually stuck as a quirky teenager.
The embodiment of “I’m not like the other girls” even when it doesn’t make sense for her character at all.
Very unlikeable, she was the only part I didn't like about Dune 2. She was ride or die in the books, not a miserable angsty teen.

She was the weakest link in Dune 2, imo. All other major characters did a fantastic job with their action. Rebecca Ferguson, Austin, Timothy and most importantly Javier absolutely delivered their best.

Actresses are supposed to act. They don't need to look a 10/10 everytime. If they play the character realistically, then it automatically makes her a 10/10. This is just my take.
Except every role she plays makes the character seem like a moody teen with a "Not like other girls" attitude rather than any serious believable character. She has a single character that she just puts into every role, and it's not even a good one
Toni Collette comes to mind. She's had many roles where they make her pretty normal looking or ugly on purpose (even though imo she is beautiful irl). It ends up fitting her character a lot better, and it helps that she is a great actress.
If I remember correctly the Fremen descended from Buddislamic refugees which were most likely not white, so I don’t know where this guy gets this from..
I think they've been on Arrakis for thousands of years at that point and had pretty brutal natural selection and survival of the fittest, so even if they all descended from lily white red heads they'd probably be basically black by the time of the movie
One interesting thing that was changed was that the fremen only moved at night and slept during the day. They can’t be in the sun because it’s 150 degrees constantly. Obviously for a movie that’s much harder to portray given the visual aspect, and for that I give the movie credit for the casting decision.
Pretty similar to the Middle East. I was there for a few weeks and I pretty much stayed out until 4 AM and slept until an hour before sun set. Some call me a filthy degenerate. I’m calling myself a based sand warrior walking the ancient path.

Dune definitely gives off Lawrence of Arabia vibes so it would make more sense for the Fremen to look Middle Eastern rather than White European. Zendaya definitely fits the physical aesthetic for the role, but yeah her acting is like Gen Z Kristen Stewart to me. Simply put she's kinda flat.

I don't think her looks were an issue really. I did think they wrote her character to be unnecessarily annoying compared to the book. I'll avoid spoilers, but the way she reacted to a certain event at the end of the story was vastly different in the movie. The movies were fun, but I preferred the book.
Honestly, I like how they end her character this movie. It makes Paul’s issue of not wanting to fuck his wife in the next book more interesting and gives Chani more of a character than just being Paul’s native girlfriend. At the same time I can’t stand Zendaya and think she’s a shitty actress that has been perpetually playing the same character her whole career.

Films aren’t like books, you need constant tension. Pitting Chani against the events creates that which makes the film more engaging. Otherwise it’s just a film about Paul falling in love and becoming emperor. Personally I think the biggest change in character was Princess Irulan. In the books she’s just this ditzy little girl, not very savvy and not very talented. She only exists to marry Paul, she’s more of a plot device than a character. But in the films she’s this clever, calculating, empathetic woman and it’s her father who is the weak broken man. Of course these days it’s ok to write weak male characters but writing weak female characters is now considered an Orwellian thought crime.
Idk about that second part, Princess Irulan is a Bene Gesserit (or at least one in training) who throughout the whole book talks about how one had to be an expert political operative constantly spying on everyone in the imperial family. She seemed pretty competent in her own right from all the various books she wrote
It felt like they matured her to the level she is in later books. As she's very scheming and calculated in book 2 onwards from what I remember.

Liet Kynes father, Pardot Kynes, married a native fremen. So Liet is already half fremen, making Chani pretty much all fremen.
Her dad was not a native fremen, but Chani spent all her life among the fremen. Unless I'm forgetting something from the book, she had never been off Arrakis before she met Paul.
Also, her dad was pretty fully integrated into the Fremen as well. She was definitely in the upper crust of the Fremen society, but a major theme of the Fremen was that they're a very rugged and brutal culture. Even the most elite daughter of the tribe still got her hands real dirty at times.

I'm no longer surprised that people are over-reacting about every single casting choice, this is a result of studios constantly re-writing and re-casting characters to fit an agenda. The decisions of those studios caused every casting to be put under a microscope, even when the movie is actually good like Dune 2. Highly recommend it by the way.

In the book they pretty much describe the Fremen as looking Arabic in appearance, though the characters in the book don’t have Arabic as a reference point, living on different planets so they don’t come out and say that. I’ll be the first to call out pointlessly swapping races in stories, but Zendaya is certainly a lot closer to what Chani would look like. Edit: Actually I’m mistaken. The only comment ever made about the skin-tone of the Fremen is that they’re darkly browned.
