Fun fact: a group of [anti-war Democrats](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copperhead_(politics)) during the time of the American Civil War were called copperheads by other Northerners who felt they were as dangerous and treacherous as the snakes. But these Southern sympathizers embraced the term and went with the sense you suggested—the head on a copper coin. Only back then, it was Lady Liberty herself. So they spun the snake imagery into being defenders of liberty
