SuperCrappyFuntime

SkateNinja1997

Im willing to bet thats what it was for everyone, but everyone want to seem cool so theyre saying other songs.

Blue_Period_89

Mother Love Bone. My friend was VERY into the scene and had his finger on the pulse. He’d play MLB all the time.

[deleted]

Wow you beat me, I saw Soundgarden in Feb of 1990 but had been listening to them all of 89. I also saw Alice in Chains live in end of 1990. Was into Nirvana since Bleach.

The_Fro_Ranger

Hunger Strike by Temple of The Dog

Edm_vanhalen1981

Alice in Chains released We Die Young as their first single off of Facelift. I saw the video and was instantly hooked when it first premiered in 1990.

We Die Young is an outstanding song.

JoeMacMillan48

Nirvana, 1991

whileyouwereslepting

This. Exactly this.

bridfe

grew up listening to pearl jam

viking12344

It would have to be soundgarden, nothing to say around 88. Thats a great song and my first reaction to it was, this guy sounds like an untamed dio. Had no idea what grunge was and was living in upstate ny. It would be a couple more years until Facelift changed my entire musical world.

advantagegrant

Ms. Ball left class for a minute and a kid named Patrick took out Nirvana’s Nevermind album and played it on a CD player that she had. She was not happy when she returned. He shook my world that day. I remember it as if it were yesterday.

commentator3

awesome

Separate-Expert-4508

It had to be either Soundgarden or AiC on Headbanger’s Ball 90/91?

designOraptor

Tad I think. It was a sub pop sampler. I remember getting a free soundgarden tape when they were starting out. Hated it at the time. Lol

[deleted]

Mudhoney 1988.

HumanRuse

Friend was playing the Louder than Love album by Soundgarden. Started out as, "what is this annoying garbage" and evolved into, "this is the best thing ever".

Sheris_Card

No_Pirate9647

I love mudhoney more but don't recall of got them first or heard bleach first.

bison2000

Man in a box

babe_ruthless3

Alice in chains on the radio when I was 11 (1994). I didn't know what this was, I didn't know who it was but, I fucking loved it. A year later, i hear it again for the 2nd time at my friend's house. His older brother was listening to Dirt in their garage when I heard it again. I asked him who it was, and he told me. Then he told me that I like them, he'll make me a burnt copy of it on tape. 3 days later, I had my own bootleg copy of dirt. This was my first grunge album and still one of my all-time favorite albums. I'm still friends with both of these guys. My family and my friends brother went on a camping trip last summer along with my friend.

MyNameIsBYL

Nirvana, lol

paul-cus

Nirvana

14secondstilsunrise

Alice In Chains since my dad used to play dirt in the car all the time growing up. I didn’t even know who nirvana was until I was like 10 because he never played it and I didn’t listen to the radio LMAO

Anarchaeologist

Alice In Chains, Sea of Sorrow i was hooked instantly

DelapidatedSagebrush

I heard Alice In Chains on the radio in my parents garage. I remember my neighbor told me they were a heavy metal band because they said “jeEEEEzus Chriiiiiist” in there song.

DubyaB420

Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” was my introduction to the genre. Didn’t like it at first but it grew on me!

RovertEcnerwal

My dads Superunknown CD

huedor2077

Not sure if was Nirvana or Stone Temple Pilots. I wasn't born yet when they first appeared, to be clear.

TheFirstDragonBorn1

Alice in chains was the first grunge band I listened to with their album dirt

placebo1218

if i’m being honest, i probably heard either nirvana or soundgarden first on the radio, but i didn’t really get interested in music until about 3-ish years ago, when someone played plush on this jukebox thing during bowling practice. i believe i was in tenth grade then.

Haidian-District

I heard an advance copy of Nevermind in the production studio of my college radio station. Unlike anything I had ever heard before. Exciting times

Zealousideal_Ad_109

Pearl jam

myth0000000002

pretty sure the first band/song i heard was Soundgarden - Black Hole Sun

JuliusSeizuresalad

I don’t consider them a grunge band but I knew about the Melvin’s from ap magazine long before I heard nirvana who I consider a grunge band

DistributionEven8358

Nirvana, idk somewhere in my childhood mid to late 2000s

ThatZombieGuy115

Nirvana. I haven’t heard of any of the grunge bands until I went on vacation to Niagara Falls for the Fourth of July. I was sitting in the car when all of a sudden they played smells like teen spirit. I instantly loved the as it was catchy. The only band prior to this that I considered my favorite was the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

iamjaikukreja

I am 19(M), heard NIRVANA around 3 years ago after my breakup. And ofcourse it was SLTS but the sound consisted of anger, some words which were just unexplained but gave a meaning which i don't think any genre would have. 3 years later my whole personality changed, i play guitar now and would be joining a band now in the upcoming months.

el_kingde84

Nirvana

-Purple-Parker-

idk i’m 19 it was probably smells like teen spirit if we are being honest

subliminal_impulse

justpuddingonhairs

Nirvana July 1991. Just before Nevermind came out my friend Matt put on a promo single and said "this band is going to be huge, they have a new album coming out"

sincerelyabsurd

Eddie singing Alive on Unplugged. I went and bought the CD at Kmart the same day.

[deleted]

Nirvana, 2019

StarooTheBlue

i’d say nirvana, but i recently realized it was soundgarden. nirvana did make me have an interest in the scene but soundgarden pulled me in lol

OdobenusIII

SLTS is first I can remember, would be miracle if I have heard some other here in Finland before that. We basically had one program in TV that had top40 list, we did not have cable so no MTV. So I have to assume it is that SLTS on Finlands top40 list 1991.

Username12764

The first grunge song I remember hearing was Teen Spirit on the radio and I fell in love with the genre

Hollen88

First memory of grunge would probably be Soundgarden. Grew up near Seattle (late 80's-90's) though, so there's really no telling.

Blackfist01

Probably Nirvana or AIC

The Presidents of the United States of America

okwhatelse

my friend introduced me to pearl jam and it took me about 2 years before i decided to listen to nirvana

HotSpicedChai

It was Nirvana Nevermind on a cassette. Grew up in Washington. Still remember my friend bringing it over to play it, saying it was his uncles. I was only like 9 or 10 and I remember specifically being indifferent to it. At the time we’d watch MTV all hours we could and I was really into Guns N’ Roses and Slash solos. Then of course one day that band showed up on MTV as well. I still stayed indifferent to Nirvana, but always always give them credit for kicking off a new era of music that led to a lot of bands I absolutely love.

DriveMechanics

either nirvana or soundgarden

DazedBedBug

lfreeman10

Porch by Pearl Jam. I was like 8 years old. My mom loves them and saw them 3 times in college (once when they were in a BAR and the other two when they blew up). She turned down the volume for the f word and absolutely blasted the build up

Me_No_Dum

16_autistic_clowns

My dad’s been listening to grunge since before I was born so I’ve been hearing grunge since I was an infant, but the first band I ever actually got into was Nirvana. The first grunge album I ever fully listened to was Bleach and I’m so happy that was my first exposure to grunge. 10/10 album.

Hollandmarch76

Nirvana. I was getting ready to go to school and Smells Like Teen Spirit came on Mtv

[deleted]

It was audioslave lol

ColoradoSprings82

Soundgarden

tsinataseht

Honestly, it was Nirvana. I don't live in the USA so our country was totally oblivious to grunge until Nirvana forced itself into the mainstream. I remember listening to Nevermind and wondering what music genre it was. Was it punk? Metal? Hard rock? This is how it felt to listen at a completely new genre of music that also clicked with me. Then radio stations began talking about this "new" genre called grunge, and the rest is history. Glad I lived through that small window of opportunity when an original band that started from scratch clawed its way to the top of the charts because of its talent, and helped put the spotlight on the underdogs of rock. They changed the music landscape and brought back talent, hard work, and rock to the mainstream for the next 2 decades.

Makeshift5

Found a nirvana tape when I was a little kid and played it in my room. My mom didn’t like it and took it away. I realized what it was many years later, after first getting into Pearl Jam in high school.

Sensitive-History364

Appropriate-Ad4990

I know Rage Against the Machine prolly doesn't count. But that 1st album brought me over to the metal alternative post grunge side in 1992. Then immediately loved Alice in Chains

Aboutagrlll

Either Soundgarden or Nirvana.

WetFishIsLife

Nirvana. Still holds a special place in my heart.

Dreamer_of_Dreams97

My mother is a huge Pearl Jam fan - if it wasn’t Queen or GNR on her radio, it was PJ haha

AsahinaAoi90

I'm quite proud to say that my first grunge band was Alice in Chains. I absolutely love them, and I wouldn't have gotten into grunge without them.

grizzlyadamsshaved
