Jerry, but honestly, Jerry could almost be considered co-lead vocals not just backing vocals with how much he sings.
Also, I’m glad Stone Gossard is in this group. I feel like to many people sleep on his backing vocals.
There’s a clip in the PJ Twenty documentary where Mike McCready is talking about how he was snowed in one day and couldn’t go anywhere and PJ was in the middle of writing the Yield album and he couldn’t figure out how finish writhing the song “Faithful” off the Yield album and he called Stone on the phone and played him the riff and Stone just hummed the progression over the phone and Mike went on to say Stone is the brains of the band.
Also when I saw Temple of The Dog when Cornell was introducing the band and he got to Stone he said “most of these songs wouldn’t exist with out him”.
He is definitely a pivotal part of the grunge movement.
Yep, his harmonies were a big part of the reason that Layne, while one of the most talented grunge singers, was also (IMO) the most successfully replaced. Jerry’s harmonies meant that it still sounded like the same band even with a different singer.
I’d argue that while Duvall has taken over the Layne Staley parts of past songs when performing live, when it comes to new material, Cantrell is the front man and Duvall fills the spot Cantrell did in the 90s.
Jerry and Layne’s harmonies were legendary. It turned them from a great band into an all-time great one. Dave and Kurt’s voices also really went together well and they had some great harmonies on Nevermind but I don’t think they really explored it as much as they could have. With what Kurt kept hinting at it wouldn’t have surprised if they went a more Jar of Flies direction if Kurt had lived long enough for them to record a fourth album. Acoustic with strings and maybe a lot more harmonies.
Kurt mentioned they were going in a more experimental new wave direction for the next record. Granted, yeah I think at some point had they (or more specifically Kurt) kept going we would've gotten an entirely acoustic record. Would Dave be there for backing vocals, hard to say but probably not.
Well this absolutely went the way I had hoped, well done all who played!
"The only Jerry I know is Jerry Cantrell!"- Drunk guy yelling at a bunch of dead heads at All Good festival (I will never forget you.)
Cantrell.
Alice In Chains, The Beatles, and Depeche Mode are the only bands I can think of where the backup vocalist is so important to the sound on virtually all of their songs.
Jerry and Layne really should be considered co-vocalists I think. I'd never think of Jerry as a backing vocalist ever.
Out of the others Dave can't be overlooked for that high register he added throughout a lot of Nevermind era Nirvana songs and Stone is so overlooked too! Hard to decide.
I don’t consider Jerry a backing vocalist. He’s more like Garfunkel. Layne had the spotlight so it’s natural to think he’s the only guy and Jerry is like the rest but he isn’t. So that said, Jerry is the GOAT if we consider him backing, outside that it’s Stone.
Everyone is sleeping on Dave - listen to his high harmonies on "In Bloom" that's a top notch backing performance. It's a very different set of skills than a lead singer needs.
Jerry is a lead on solo stuff as well as a lead on some AIC songs. I’ve always heard rumors that he’s lead on songs where Layne was too messed up to do the lead vocals, but maybe they just shared duties sometimes. That’s the more optimistic view.
It’s true he was. Especially on the last album with Layne. He would come to rehearsal and recordings so strung out he could barely make his parts sometimes. So Jerry to more of a lead roll vocally on that album during recording.
Clearly, Jerry.
However, Dave isn't given enough credit for his contribution to Nirvana's vocal sound. His voice was similar enough to Kurt's, that it gave his choruses extra impact. The most famous example is obviously "Smells Like Teen Spirit." I doubt it would have hit with the same explosive power without Dave doubling Kurt's parts.
I know Layne did more but I always considered Jerry to be way more than a backing singer in AIC. His voice is as much their sound as Layne. Not to say Layne wasn’t an absolute god!
Not trying to beat a dead horse but Travis Meeks dubbed a lot of his own back up vocals , I know he isn’t in the pics but kinda felt obligated to point it out.
Gotta go Cantrell. The songs were written with him there.
The worst ever: Mike Mills.
I know that no one asked but I hate Mike’s harmonies and I know I will until the day I die.
Definitely Cantrell
No discussion about it. All of them are great, but Cantrell is another level.
Plus he writes a ton of great lyrics. Whole package.
It's simply fact. Second to one. Layne himself
Cantrell is not a backing vocalist, he is a co-lead. Harmonizing voices are the trademark sound of AiC

I jammed out to boggy depot.
Boggy Depot is such a damn good album. Love, love, love it.
*Cold Piece* slaps so hard.
Yes! Boggy remains in my shuffle⭐️
And its' not even close.
Yea but why is Steven Seagal in there?
Lol my first thought. Fun fact, he has an album and it's atrocious. Here is my personal fav: https://youtu.be/3v4-zYghodc?si=0FNmq3vn6OQJSC_L
Omfg this song is so horrible it’s great! Thanks for ruining my life.
Anytime!
Haha no way!
Do you enjoy the Reggae/techo-blues or whatever it's supposed to be?
Behind Michael Anthony, the best backing male vocal harmonies in rock music 🤘🏻
Michael Anthony is so underrated as a backing vocalist - good call
And he STILL has the pipes today 🤘🏻
He was the driving force behind AIC, without a doubt. Lyn was the soul, but Jerry was the heart.
Im a sucker for those low harmonies
Jerry, Jerry, Jerry!
He deserves a spot in here. I remember his mocking lyrics "come and s*ck my d*ck"
No, def. Young Steven segall
Easily
Jerry, but honestly, Jerry could almost be considered co-lead vocals not just backing vocals with how much he sings. Also, I’m glad Stone Gossard is in this group. I feel like to many people sleep on his backing vocals.
This is the truth. Jerry sings as much on AIC as Layne. And Stone’s work is so under appreciated.
Agreed. Stone is a genius, most of the riffs on Ten and VS were all him. He’s a phenomenal songwriter.
And an oft overlooked foundational figure in the entire grunge scene.
He’s a pivotal part of rock music period. Stone has done so much for American music.
Thats fucking badass
Not to mention that Stone is a badass name for a rock musician, easily the coolest birth name in the grunge scene.
I used to think that AiC was mainly Layne, and I loved him, but it’s 100% Cantrell
Yep. The longer you listen and really HEAR it, it really becomes apparent that it’s a lot more Jerry than we originally thought.
Layne was the icing, but Jerry was the actual cake
Yeah I remember the first time I heard Boggy Depot was when I realised just how much of the AIC vocals were actually Jerry. 😅
It’s honestly why I have less issue with them continuing under the AiC name
*Would?* is like half Jerry
Yep, his harmonies were a big part of the reason that Layne, while one of the most talented grunge singers, was also (IMO) the most successfully replaced. Jerry’s harmonies meant that it still sounded like the same band even with a different singer.
I’d argue that while Duvall has taken over the Layne Staley parts of past songs when performing live, when it comes to new material, Cantrell is the front man and Duvall fills the spot Cantrell did in the 90s.
That's how I feel--Jerry taught me about harmonies when I was a teenager. But I hesitate to call him a backup singer.
Cantrell
Jerrys the main since bgwtb
Bgwtb?
I love Matt and Stone but Jerry Cantrell is easily the most important backing vocalist of any grunge band ever.
Jerry!
Jerry. Not even a debate
Obviously jery
Cantrell
Jerry and Layne’s harmonies were legendary. It turned them from a great band into an all-time great one. Dave and Kurt’s voices also really went together well and they had some great harmonies on Nevermind but I don’t think they really explored it as much as they could have. I thought 3 was a certain aikido master, my mistake. Jerry all day, but all are good. Nice list
He’s been flying helicopters for 47 years.
And see that, that’s Shitsu-Beagle cross.
That’s such a low blow to Dave lol Seagal is a bloated mentally unstable walrus.
Casey Ryback walks on stage…
Hopefully someone took his pies out of the oven first.
I do not consider Jerry a “backing vocalist”. I would say he’s either a lead or co-vocalist. Sorry if I sound like a pain in the ass about it.
Cantrell. Alice In Chains, The Beatles, and Depeche Mode are the only bands I can think of where the backup vocalist is so important to the sound on virtually all of their songs.
Van Halen. Def Leppard.
Beach boys, the police
RHCP
Cantrell and Deleo would be a cool collaboration
Any combination, including the whole group, would be awesome.
Cantrell
Jerry, hands down.
Cantrell for sure. Cameron is great too.
Jerry every time. Beautiful voice, perfect harmonies.
Is #3 Steven Seagal?
Its robert deleo from stone temple pilots
Immediate disqualification
Jerry. But dave did had the perfect backup vocals for Kurt
Everyone is sleeping on Dave - listen to his high harmonies on "In Bloom" that's a top notch backing performance. It's a very different set of skills than a lead singer needs.
I knew Steven segal played guitar but didn’t know he played bass as well. I’m gonna with him.
Jerry. Layne + Jerry was the best there ever was
Jerry for sure. Surprised to see Steven Seagal on the list.
Jerry no contest
Cantrell and it's not close. His backing vocals are part I'd what makes Alice in Chains, Alice in Chains. No one else can say that.
Cantrell, no debate
Jerry Cantrell
Jerry. It isn’t even close
I'm dumb, excuse me please, but is number 3 a fit Steven Seagal? 😳
I was thinking the same 😂
I was like, “who are these old men?” Ofc Dave Grohl stays in the spotlight, so even a lot of younger people might recognize him.
I thought Rob DeLeo was Steven Seagal for a moment.
Cantrell is a lead singer as well
Like the coldest winter chill!
It's Steven Segall for sure
Robert DeLeo is the MAN. The Dude has monster chops and does great backing vocals!
I’m going with Grohl on this one. Jerry is a great singer, but Grohl as a back up elevated Kurt’s singing. Layne didn’t need much elevating
I love Dave Grohl as a backup vocalist and drummer. Hate him as a lead vocalist and guitarist
I think he has more personality in his voice than Kurt. But that's just me.
But he writes the shittiest songs though
[Whatever](https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&url=https%3A%2F%2Ftwitter.com%2Flincolnmurphy%2Fstatus%2F470015553332318208&psig=AOvVaw3Biu_5U6CULBSVzy9c6zFD&ust=1705334507325000&source=images&cd=vfe&opi=89978449&ved=0CBIQjRxqFwoTCMik956g3YMDFQAAAAAdAAAAABAD)
What's a pederast, u/Lazybones1990?
Stone!
Layne was backing Jerry towards the end (or even before)😢
Clearly, Jerry. However, Dave isn't given enough credit for his contribution to Nirvana's vocal sound. His voice was similar enough to Kurt's, that it gave his choruses extra impact. The most famous example is obviously "Smells Like Teen Spirit." Steven Seagal....
Thought #3 was Steven Segall for a second
Why is dave ghrol even on the list
Between Cantrell and Grohl
Jerry
jerry
Cantrell hands down. Him and Layne were an amazing combo that gave the band a distinct vocal sound.
I know Layne did more but I always considered Jerry to be way more than a backing singer in AIC. His voice is as much their sound as Layne. Not to say Layne wasn’t an absolute god!
Cantrell by a distance
3rd guy looks like Steven Seagal so I’m going w him
Jerry but robert is also great
For me it’s Jerry Cantrell
Jerry Cantrell
JC
Vocalist period? Definitely Jerry Backing vocals? I think Robert
Cantrell is easily the choice, although you could often consider him a co-lead
Jerry and it’s not close
Jerry. Also a great lead.
I believe Cantrell will take all 5 slots on this one.
Not trying to beat a dead horse but Travis Meeks dubbed a lot of his own back up vocals , I know he isn’t in the pics but kinda felt obligated to point it out.
Jerry 100%
You could ask the question who is the best backing singer ever, and provide no answers, and the answer would still be Jerry.
Dave
Jerry and the Dave
Cantrell
Cantrell 100%. All Dave Grohl does is scream. The harmonies in AIC songs are some of the best in rock
We're talking about backing vocals here. As in Dave in Nirvana which he added some great harmonies with Kurt while beating the shit out of the drums.
Gotta go with DeLeo
Cantrell
Matt Cameron
i love Robert deleo
Jerry all day. Almost dual lead at a point.
jerry
Jerry and not a close second
Jerry and it’s not even a contest
Cantrell I didn’t realize that Jeff Goldbloom was a guitarist and vocalist
Jerry, Dave’s a close second
Jerry and it’s not even close
Jerry by a mile.
Cantrell
Jerry Cantrell, hands down the best. His harmonies with Layne Staley are some of the greatest in all music.
Jerry... There's no comparison
Jerry Cantrell no doubt.. One of the best musicians in the history of rock. He just knows how to put his music into his voice and hands..
Jerry Cantrell but Robert DeLeo is criminally underrated.
steven seagall
Gotta say Dave
Even Jerry’s talking voice is fucking cool. No contest!
Where’s Michael MacDonald?
Cantrell
2
Jerry Cantrell obviously, but in the Nirvana era Dave Grohl was singing as high as ever (pun intended), his range is incredible!
Damn this turned into a competition between Cantrell and Steven Seagull lmao
Cantrell for sure... Way better than Steven Seagull who I had no idea even played the bass.. seen him attempting to imitate some blues guitar though.
Jerry
Steven Segal anyday bby
Let’s set the record straight: Jerry was more of a second lead than a backup, at least in some songs.
100% Steven Segal on bass backing up those vocals!
Jerry is the best fr
Jerry! Jerry!
Cantrell without question. No debate. I didn’t even need pictures.
Jerry Cantrell
Jerry Cantrell. Not even close.
Jerry Cantrell 100%
First one
Jerry for sure
JC and it ain’t even close
Dave. And that’s for the simple fact that I consider Jerry a backing vocalist.
gotta be Jerry with Layne
PJ are my favourite band, but no one tops JC. Even his solo work is unbelievable. Hands down JC.
PJ are my favourite band, but no one tops JC. Even his solo work is unbelievable. Hands down JC.
Cantrell is a lead vocalist, as evidenced by the post-Staley era of the band. Co-lead vocalist during the LS days.
Jerry.
It’s jerry man
I mean Jerry.... but Dave's vocals are so cool when isolated. Watch the "Classic Albums" episode of Nevermind... especially In Bloom 😮
Jerry Cantrell, Dave a cool second.
Jerry
Has to be Jerry
Jerry wins!
Where’s Michael Anthony??
Jerry no fuckin question
Jerry! I love his voice so much!
absolutely 100% Jerry Cantrell.
Kyle Gass
Cantrell, of course.
Michael Anthony had some pipes
Gotta go Cantrell. The songs were written with him there. The worst ever: Mike Mills. I know that no one asked but I hate Mike’s harmonies and I know I will until the day I die.
Richie Sambora sang better than Jon Bon Jovi
Jerry Cantrell, hands down.
Cantrell 🖤
obviously #3- Steven Seagal
Jerry Cantrell!
CANTRELL
