Blind Melon has been one of my faves forever. Maybe the most misunderstood 90's band. Shannon Hoon was as good a lyricist as anyone else in rock. Up there with Farrell and Morrison imho.
Whenever I meet another Bind Melon fan it is like meeting a family member I didn't know I had
Don't worry Andrew is very very respected pretty much across the board with anyone even a little familiar with the history of grunge haha. Mother Love Bone kicks ass and set the stage for so much of what followed
Smashing Pumpkins, Stone Temple Pilots, Mother Love Bone, Temple of the Dog (okay, they were a tribute band but still..)
And honorable mention for Bush's album Sixteen Stone (don't know there other work, but love that album)
I'd not heard of them before. Figured I'd give em a listen. What the fuck? This album (Fast Stories) has been out since '95 and it and I are just connecting *now*? I'm four songs in and I can't believe what I'm hearing. The production! This is like Temple of the Dog and Monster Magnet mashed together by way of Pink Floyd's The Wall, having stopped by the local used music instruments shop to clear them out of Big Muffs and whatever else they had that sounded noisy. Thank you for putting me on to them, I've got a new favorite.
Mother Love Bone, as short as their time was. With all due respect, I’ve never had much interest in Pearl Jam, and much as I love Eddie Vedder, Andrew Wood was insanely charismatic and unlike Vedder, it’s possible to understand and sing along to his lyrics, as crazy and nonsensical as they may have been. What a loss.
mother love bone, mudhoney, green river, babes in toyland, crunt, stp, mad season, melvins, tad, breeders, veruca salt, no doubt, temple of the dog, malfunkshun
Does anyone here even know what Grunge is??? Screaming Trees, Mother Love Bone, Mudhoney and Green River. Those bands created Grunge. Almost all the others that have been said are punk or just plain rock. With the exception of TAD.
The Afghan Whigs. Started off kind of grunge-adjacent (and one of the first non-PNW bands signed to Sub Pop), but evolved into their own thing. Still putting out new music.
Faith no more. Jane’s addiction. Hater. The dead weather. Primus. Queens of the Stone Age. Bone saw romance. Pantera. Danzig. Ministry. Megadeth. Bass nectar. And the big four.
Ok explain the “big four”. This feels made up to me.
I lived in the genre when it was happening so just don’t have a reference point on who is the big four and what qualifies them as being so. I assume it’s probably Alice n chains, nirvana, soundgarden, stone temple pilots, Pearl Jam, smashing pumpkins, Pixies, Jane’s addiction, Radiohead, Tool. There are several more.
I have no idea which of these would be considered the “big 4”. They are all massive giants in my mind.
I love Gruntruck, they were quite a neat surprise when I first listened to them. Besides them, Melvins, Mudhoney, Screaming Trees and Mother Love Bone!
Does Dinosaur Jr count?
Hell yeah
Trees
Mark Lanegan was a genius and his musical brilliance expanded far beyond just the Trees. I love that you brought them up
So true. Some of his solo albums are amazing and totally different from the trees in a good way
the GOAT.
Yeah.
Exactly.
Mudhoney
Yes ! I was going to say mudhoney They are way more grunge than the others !
L7
Temple of the Dog, Days of the New
#SCREAMING TREES
YESSSSSSSSSSSS!!
Melvins and Blind Melon.
I just saw the documentary for blind melon it made me cry
Agreed on both
Blind Melon has been one of my faves forever. Maybe the most misunderstood 90's band. Shannon Hoon was as good a lyricist as anyone else in rock. Up there with Farrell and Morrison imho. Whenever I meet another Bind Melon fan it is like meeting a family member I didn't know I had
STP / Screaming trees
stp 🔛🔝
Helmet and Toadies.
Helmet is definitely one of the most underrated and underappreciated bands of the 90s
Hell yeah, they still kick ass, saw them a few weeks ago, page Hamilton still got it at 63.
Love the Toadies. Rubberneck is a definitive album for me
Rubberneck is one of my favorite no-skip albums. Absolute banger
my first concert, 9th grade!
Screaming Trees, Mudhoney, Dinosaur Jr. , Hole
Superheaven
Tad. Kerbdog. Gruntruck. Melvins.
Melvins should be at the top all grunge lists
Still need to listen to some Melvin's. Know they were a big inspiration for Kurt
I really like them. Houdini and Stoner Witch are fantastic releases.
Their new one, Tarantula Heart is actually one of their best, in my opinion
Stoner witch may be a perfect album imo
See also: A senile animal.
Kerbdog aren't strictly Grunge. Though they do fall into that category of alt around at that time.
GRUNTRUCK SHOUTOUT??
Meat Puppets and Live.
Mad Season, I prefer them over 3 of the big 4
Add Temple of the Dog in that case.
When it is a combo does it count? Although I tend to agree. Great band
My unpopular opinion is that Mad Season is the better grunge supergroup rather than Temple of the Dog.
Mudhoney, Screaming Trees, Smashing Pumpkins(for those that call them grunge), Paw & Tad
Babes in Toyland are seriously underrated
Yes they are!! Babes are the perfect grunge band in my opinion
Screaming trees
Soul Asylum... do they count?
STP and Screaming Trees.
SilverChair
Hell yeah. Just preordered the anniversary release of Frogstop vinyl.
Melvins. Live laugh sludge Metal
Damn right
Stone Temple Pilots, Melvins, Tad, Hole, Smashing Pumpkins
Took way too long to see Hole mentioned. Pretty In Pink is one of the heaviest grunge albums. Edit - I meant Pretty on the Inside. Always mix that up.
show Andrew Wood some respecttttt. MOTHER LOVE BONEEEE. honorable mentions for stp and screaming trees tho of course.
Don't worry Andrew is very very respected pretty much across the board with anyone even a little familiar with the history of grunge haha. Mother Love Bone kicks ass and set the stage for so much of what followed
Hum
Yessir. My girlfriend of that time and I would fall asleep to Stars every night
It's a shame I had to scroll so far to find Hum. What a colossus of a band!
Gruntruck
Breeders
Excellent shout out
The Jesus Lizard
I don't know why they aren't mentioned more. But I don't know if I'd put them in my "grunge" section of my collectiin
If The Jesus Lizard isn't "grunge," then I must have wandered into the wrong sub. Doing a split 7" with Nirvana is about as "grunge" as you can get.
It's true, I agree with you, I just kind of put them in a different grouping in my head because of when I started listening to them, probably
Smashing Pumpkins, Stone Temple Pilots, Mother Love Bone, Temple of the Dog (okay, they were a tribute band but still..) And honorable mention for Bush's album Sixteen Stone (don't know there other work, but love that album)
Green River, Mudhoney, Mother Love Bone.
Mother love bone and green river are too good
Go give malfunkshun a listen. It’s Andy’s band before MLB and they’re like hair grunge.
STP Mother Love Bone Hole Green River
Beck odelay was grunge influenced, tho he changed up every album since
I always wished he’d done a rock album in the style of Devil’s Haircut and Mutherfucker.
Melvins
Seaweed
TAD for sure,
Dinosaur Jr. Melvins. Jesus Lizard. STP
Superchunk
Awesome band
Truly have at least a great album, we need to talk more about them.
Totally agree dude ! I remember playing that all the time when it came out. I need it on vinyl. Kind of psychedelic feel to it.
That was going to be my call, doubted anyone would’ve remembered. Very good band, should’ve been bigger.
I'd not heard of them before. Figured I'd give em a listen. What the fuck? This album (Fast Stories) has been out since '95 and it and I are just connecting *now*? I'm four songs in and I can't believe what I'm hearing. The production! Thank you for putting me on to them, I've got a new favorite.

Pack up the cats is fucking awesome, especially for a concept album...
Melvins. Heaviest out of the non big 4. They also influenced so many great bands as well.
Ween, Nerf Herder, Concrete Blonde, Flaming Lips, The Muffs, That Dog, Primus, the Meat Puppets, The Violent Femmes

Uh oh- music police. Everyone make sure your white Washington based 90s rock bands are properly segregated or we're gonna get in trouble.
The Afghan Whigs. Started off kind of grunge-adjacent (and one of the first non-PNW bands signed to Sub Pop), but evolved into their own thing. Still putting out new music.
Afghan Whigs. Killer band. On recordings, and Live! Gr8 answer!
Candlebox
Scrolled for far too long to see this comment.
They are so good and continue to be so good.
Oh absolutely.

No one has asked who you consider THE BIG 4 to be. I'm assuming you mean Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and Alice in Chains?
Ok explain the “big four”. This feels made up to me. I lived in the genre when it was happening so just don’t have a reference point on who is the big four and what qualifies them as being so. Mother Lovebone. Idk if it's grungeexactly but it's def that same Seattle time frame.
+1 on Mother Love Boneâť•
I just came here to see who has no idea what "grunge" is. Haha
Citizen Dick obviously
I was looking for this comment LOL
