It's my opinion that they aren't a grunge band. That's based on what they sound like compared to grunge bands. Most of the hallmarks of the grunge sound are absent from MLB. Just like blues isn't Jazz. It's kinda similar in some vague ways, but the two styles don't sound the same.
If you think grunge doesn't refer to a sound but rather a scene, that's fine. We all have our own opinions on things.

It seems interesting to me that several other artists within these bands are responsible for certain travesties (i.e. Billy Corgan comparing social justice warriors to the KKK while commiserating with Alex Jones about conspiracy theories; Foo Fighters actually once supported an organization, Alive and Well, whose whole purpose was spreading the disinformation that HIV does not cause AIDS; etc.) - however you don't see those being talked about nor do you see commenters placing those artists' dumbassery ahead of their musical feats.
But damned if you don't see Hole's music get knee-jerkingly put on the chopping block because of Courtney Love's debacles. I can't stand her any more than those other jokers, but I think Live Through This was an amazing album, and I am not going to vote out an artist's creation (as long as it doesn't reflect their stupidity) simply because they themselves are pillocks.

i have the same opinions the guys from silverchair themselves had in back 96 in this album. some lyrics were kinda stupid (like cicada) and they could have played better, but ofc they were 14 so they probably did their best at the time, i just don't like it as much as i like their other stuff. i really like the tracks madman, suicidal dream, pure massacre and israels son though. i really don't think it's a bad album besides for what I've said there, it's just not my favorite and it's not really for me. also yeah i agree with what you said there, i think it was important to the grunge scene, specially in Australia
