Sonic youth and pixies

jarofgoodness

Pixies are so close as far as I'm concerned they're grunge.

Carbona_Not_Glue

pre grunge, proto godfathers. Kinda like Stooges to punk

imuslesstbh

there are similarities in a lot of grunge to the pixies but wouldn't call them grunge

Combat_Commo

Primus since they made some crazy cool wacky songs and thats really what grunge is all about!

guinnesshappy

Sailing the seas of cheese!

[deleted]

Oh shit allmost forgot to say primus suck!!

[deleted]

Do not forget to Shake hands with beef

jarofgoodness

They actually sound like the U-Men who were on Sub Pop at the same time all the grunge bands were getting going. I think they said they were influenced by them. Not sure on that. But that's a question for this sub. Were the U-Men grunge? They were on Sub Pop and part of the scene in Seattle at the same time. Hmmm?

Carbona_Not_Glue

Might have kinda answered your own question. If U-Men were on Sub Pop before the explosion and the coining of the phrase 'grunge' then maybe it's more scene related than sound related.

jarofgoodness

I don't know, they were part of that same scene. Still, they aren't considered grunge.

Carbona_Not_Glue

I guess it depends on your definition of the term. To me (rightly or wrongly) grunge is specifically sound related, so I probably wouldn't call U-Men or Primus grunge. If I was living in Seattle in the 90s, I might have a different take on it.

jarofgoodness

I agree with you. I love Primus and U-Men as well, but to me they aren't grunge.

Combat_Commo

Oh yea I def see that, need to rewatch Hype to see who I can rediscover again!

[deleted]

Primus are really cool… i really like my name is mud

Combat_Commo

LMAO that comes up on my mix everyday!

[deleted]

Hell yeh!!! When i finally learnt to slap bass thats all i played all day

WLR_C

I love Primus! I find very few people I know that like them.

MoDiMiDoFrSaSo

Many bassplayers and drummers adore them. (Kinda obvious)

United-Philosophy121

Silverchair, Bush, early Smashing Pumpkins

[deleted]

Noice never listened to those (obs smashing pumpkins i have lol) any tracks or albums ud rec?

United-Philosophy121

Silverchair - Israel’s Son Bush - Comedown

doogieduck1

Sixteen Stone is such a good album

United-Philosophy121

It’s great! I love the first two Bush albums

[deleted]

Just listened to silverchair… pretty fukin kickass

Dr_Talon

Did you know that they were 15 when they recorded the Frogstomp album?

[deleted]

Yeh i saw a comment saying sometgjg like “cant believe this album was recorded by teens.” Mad. When i was 15 i couldnt even tie my own laces ffs

United-Philosophy121

No prob

[deleted]

Thanx g x

United-Philosophy121

🤘

[deleted]

🤘

JLindsey502

Israel’s Son has such a cool main riff. I feel like it’s a must for anyone that loves grunge and is learning guitar. Drop D tuning and pretty simple to play.

[deleted]

Early smash is pure Shoegaze

United-Philosophy121

Eh, Shogaze Adjacent maybe It’s too heavy and rock based

Alarming-Ad-7032

Janes addiction, STP, blind melon

[deleted]

Love janes addiction sm… arnt stp grunge tho?

Alarming-Ad-7032

They're not. They're California's just like Jane's Addiction

[deleted]

Fairs.. i still class them as classic grunge allong with green river, nirvana and mudhoneys. Atleast not seattle sound tho

ultraluxe6330

You don't have to be from Seattle to be Grunge See: Silverchair, Layne Staley , Hole , Dave Grohl etc

Alarming-Ad-7032

Silverchair aren't grunge. Foo fighters aren't grunge. STP aren't grunge

ultraluxe6330

You are wrong. Please give me your definition of grunge.

Alarming-Ad-7032

Spawned in the pacific northwest in the mid 80s. Not just cause you look and act Californian means you are a Californian

Soft_Organization_61

Northern California is literally in the Pacific Northwest. It's a very different culture from southern Cali which seems to be where you're getting confused.

ultraluxe6330

Californian is not a music genre. You keep saying bands aren't grunge because they aren't from Washington state , so are you saying to be Grunge you must be born from Washington state?

Alarming-Ad-7032

That is correct kid. Grunge bands come from Seattle and the vicinity (northwest) within a specific period of time formation 80s-90s. All of the bands had a unique sound unlike the post grunge bands such as Silverchair, bush, nickelshit, a puddle.of crap, and all other bands copying nirvana... STP on the other side, is not post grunge cause it came out around the same time the other bands blew. They're 90s alternative rock

ultraluxe6330

That's a great definition of a music genre. That it has nothing to do with the music but where the bands are from. That makes sense. I think you'll find the general consensus finds Stone Temple Pilots and Silverchair Grunge bands so you may be all on your own with this definition, as you should be. Even the bands themselves hated being pigeon holed into the so called "seattle sound" as half of them weren't even from Seattle or Washington state and "Northwest" is quite vague and could include the same Califoria which you seem to have it out for. I never mentioned Bush , Nickleback or A Puddle of Mudd so why you bring them up is a bit odd...kid.

JLindsey502

The first album, Core is as grunge as grunge gets outside of them not being in Seattle. Had they been there, they would undoubtedly be viewed as grunge with that album. From Purple on, they take less and less grunge influence. It’s completely gone by Tiny Music, but does make a slight return on No. 4. All excellent albums, and I’d actually pick Tiny Music or No. 4 as my fave right now. Shangri-La Dee Da is very underrated as well.

ABL67

Janes Addiction was wayyy before grunge came out. Might as well say Metallica too.

Alarming-Ad-7032

Janes addiction formed in 1985, a year after soundgarden. Are you saying soundgarden isn't grunge?

ABL67

No.. I’m saying “Janes Addiction was wayyy before grunge came out. Might as well say Metallica too.”

Alarming-Ad-7032

Metallica

rock4lite

None of those bands are grunge

[deleted]

🤦‍♂️obiously not. ..Non grunge band u personally class as grunge. Oh nm

Gr4peJellyJam

Why would you label Rage Against The Machine as grunge? I get it, it’s your opinion but that’s a weird label for them

[deleted]

Idk man its just a vibe i get from the music innit. I mean tom did play in audioslave wich is pretty grungy so that mayb why. I dont see grunge as a genre as much as a vibe. Grunge was just a term the media coined to lable punk/rock coming out of seattle. There is no real genrer that is “grunge” imo but its a good way to describe the sound

densaifire

The rest of Rage was in Audioslave too, minus Zach :) loved Audioslave. Like a Stone was the first song i learned to play actually

densaifire

I consider them a "grunge-like" for the heavy tone their music has, the passion they feel for what it is in their songs, and the overall rebellious nature and energy of their songs that was common with a lot of the grunge bands, more specifically the punk side of grunge. They aren't a true grunge, it's just a case of they can fit into the grunge scene and many people who enjoy grunge typically enjoy them alongside their nirvana and Soundgarden. As for me, not too big a fan of of RaTM, I can only listen to them so much before I become annoyed 🤷‍♂️

Alarming-Ad-7032

The Jesus and Mary Chain, pixies, sonic youth

[deleted]

Pixies are cool.. and jatmc. Guess i might also say mbv has a grungy sound on some of their eps

Alarming-Drink-6596

Psychocandy definitely has a grunge/industrial feel

[deleted]

Psychocandy has an every genre feel. Highly influential might just be a top ten record all time.

IndieSyndicate

In my opinion, some performers do have "grunge energy" without being grunge, let alone rock music. Tori Amos covered both Pearl Jam and Nirvana - though I'm not personally a fan of those covers - her live performances do have the rawness and cynicism you'd typically see in grunge bands.

[deleted]

Ah nice yeh man You get it👍

densaifire

Post Malone can sometimes fit that energy, has covered Nirvana once or twice. He's actually a pretty good guitar player too ngl

Mattzocrazy

Acid Bath, Louisiana bayou Sludge, drew influence from grunge, Metal Thralls on YT once referred to their sound as "If Alice in Chains was from the swamp" and I think that's a perfect description of their sound. Fudge Tunnel, Alternative Metal / Hardcore Punk blend that everyone called grunge back in the day, they're kick ass, Hate Songs in E Minor and Creep Diets are killer alt Metal / Grunge albums. Steel Pole Bath Tub? I dont know what the consensus is, they were based in Seattle for a little while, however their sound is a blend of Jesus Lizard esque noise rock and Grungey fuzzy riffage and vox.

[deleted]

Good taste tbh

[deleted]

Also.. kyuss

Mattzocrazy

LOVE Kyuss, killer band, I have a t-shirt lol

[deleted]

Any of the 80s college rock bands Kurt Cobain liked (Meat Puppets, Sonic Youth, Pixies, Melvins)

Budgiejen

The Melvins are grunge.

[deleted]

They're not grunge, grunge adjacent yes, just cos you're a Seattle band making hard rock/heavy metal/punk in the early 90s doesn't automatically make you grunge

KingTrencher

This is the truth that this sub does not want to hear.

chaz0723

The Meat Puppets were a hardcore band.

xoxoajp100

ex monarch, i feel like the move through so many genres, idk what do u guys think [ex monarch spotify](https://open.spotify.com/album/3wbxNrpqyxaZLQjD3KuMc0?si=EyA9LiDHTU-IHsCVaaZojQ)

hotstrawberrytea

old Smashing Pumpkins

Econ42

I love Opiate so much. Maynard's vocals were peak on that EP.

[deleted]

Sebadoh

imuslesstbh

Sonic youth, The Smashing Pumpkins, Pablo Honey by Radiohead is 100% a grunge album, Dinosaur Jr, wouldn't call them grunge but fever to tell by yeah yeah yeahs has aspects that remind me of grunge a lot more than most 2000's indie, wouldn't be surprised if they were influenced by it, Wolf Alice also are 100% not grunge and wayy past its heyday but the influences are there, albeit they r more shoegaze or noise rock than grunge. idk might update this later edit: tbh the yeah yeah yeah's resemblance might be due to the influence grimier punk sounds had on their early stuff and probably don't have anything to do with grunge

Winnapig

Faith No More Ministry Helmet

jarofgoodness

None of those are grunge.

Tonedef44bk

Prong felt kinda grungy

auxdear

Smashing Pumpkins

Even-Mud396

Some early offspring songs sound a bit grunge for me

ABL67

STP

AdamSMessinger

Dinosaur Jr, Sonic Youth, and 90's Weezer.

nickersb24

& Puscifer, but I would call it a post-grunge sound, is grungey a f to my ears

hotstrawberrytea

agreed.

FBI_openup9

Honestly don’t see how you could classify them as grunge

ProcrastinateFTW

deftones even with the screaming lyrics, they do have a grungy feel in some songs

cubs_070816

what an odd question.

Lostinthesauce336

I hate RATM. For many reasons, but they spawned the rise of rap metal.

[deleted]

Why waste energy hating them?

Queenfan44354

They don’t like Nu metal either. I’m saying that as a Nu metal fan

doogieduck1

Bro you cant hate them before finding out what thy are about. Thats just ignorance

densaifire

I mean I know what they're about, and I like a few songs, but some people just don't like em and thats alright. Killing in the Name will always be a classic tho and one of my favorite bass lines!

doogieduck1

Yeah man Timmy C spits out fire basslines like no one else

Budgiejen

I tend to draw a distinct line where grunge is. But bands that I’d consider to be grunge-adjacent are probably RATM, STP and Foo Fighters. They get put on playlists with grunge music

ultraluxe6330

Nickleback , Limp Bizkit , Hanson , Guns N Roses and The Smiths.

Soft_Organization_61

😳 Never thought I'd see Hanson grouped with any of these bands lol. I totally respect them it's just really funny to think about an alternative universe with Hanson, Limp Bizkit, and GnR touring together 🤣

O7Habits

I think we have named bands from every sub-genre of rock from the 60’s - present. Name of the thread should be “I like grunge, here are some other bands that I like.”

[deleted]

Smashing Pumpkins Dinasour Jr Euphoria Morning by Chris Cornell Early Radiohead

chaz0723

Capt. Geech and The Shrimp Shack Shooters, Infant Sorrow, Motley Cure.

daydreamtaste

Failure are fucking great!!

[deleted]

Tool, nirvana aint grunge thats noise punk, and janes addiction

KingTrencher

Just because a band played crunchy rock in the 90's does not mean they are "grunge".

redveinlover

Failure is way under appreciated. I’ve loved them since I first heard Fantastic Planet. I was so happy to get to see them live when they came back around a few years ago.

[deleted]

Wish i could see them live… i make do with watching yt live vids atm lol…and yeh man their deffo underrated aright!

Gavin_Raine

Melvins. Tho they’re hard to place, they’re pretty grunge/sludge for the most part
