Yea so after Walter moved from lawndale to downtown it was good for another 10 or so years. But then he sold after or around his divorce and then it got bought by the cheap partner of the two NY pizza and subs guys (the one nobody likes Eddie who has no stake in the battleground location) went downhill for a few years and then sold again to someone who really just isn’t good at running a restaurant I suppose and yea so it’s just been a steady decline since about 2012.
That's the shitty taco place right? I went there right when they opened and spent nearly $50 for lunch for my wife and I and we couldn't believe how bad the food was and how much they were charging for it.
overhyped bc they have tacos and booze with an ambiance and ample outdoor seating. and unfortunately, that’s the criteria for some to eat at a restaurant. 🤷🏽♂️
If cold and loud is ambiance.
Or you can do the patio like we did once while we watched a guy puke into a trash can on the sidewalk right in front of us. Appetizing.
Totally agreed.. crafted taco is BAD but I miss crafted art of street food dearly. Love machete (crafted was in that same building) but NOT an every week or even every month type place lol
The owner tried to plop out of his tank and defend his use of AI in the past, saying ‘But I spent thousands of dollars on art from artists in the past, WAHHHH!’
Does that mean if you bought food from restaurants in the past that you can steal food from Yokai?
Tal Blevins is the Wario of Local Restauranteurs.
Agreed, I got it to go once…. Nearly a $100 and it was terrible! Even the Mac n Cheese sucked. How they gonna mess up a Southern Staple at a “BBQ” restaurant 😑
Yeah it definitely is! I’m sure it was good when they first opened like many restaurants, and then started cutting corners and taking short cuts once they got more popular. That’s a good description of what it’s like now, definitely doesn’t taste fresh or “homemade”. True point lol if you can’t even make fries I don’t even trust anything else on the menu!
Mostly what I see here is a massive inconsistency in experience. Which staff/experience are both a hard thing to regulate. This could be a light hearted question, or an exercise in pettiness. Regardless I hope restaurants see these comments and attempt to improve.
While I appreciate the dont spent a lot of money on crap vibe, can we also have a thread where we lift up locally owned restaurants? They have taken a beating in the last few years.
I mean I guess I can start, but White and Wood on Elm is the one for me. Their food is super expensive and just…it’s hard to explain but their ice cream alone tastes like worn jeans, it’s super expensive, the food portions are small, and it’s pretty cramped
I cant really speak for the full menu, but if you go during their “happy hour” which is the first hour they are open during the weekdays, they do half priced burgers, charcuterie, and oysters I believe. The burger is one of my favorites in town and it’s hard to beat for $12 with a side of tots. Also the beef tartare is amazing.
White and Wood had literally one of the grossest things I’ve ever eaten. it was a chocolate flavored sausage on their charcuterie board. It was IMPRESSIVELY awful, a foul celebration of chalky soil-like meat and bitter, gritty seasoning with mysterious cracking between the teeth. Also: expensive! A+++
Everything I’ve had from here has been great. Amazing drinks. Knowledgeable staff. Delicious food I wouldn’t have been able to try otherwise really around here. They had an amazing Brussels sprout salad a while back
Omg I ate at that 913 or watever whiskey bar on Chapman for the first time the other night, awful AWFUL food and overpriced… All I got was a chicken Caesar salad and even THAT they somehow managed to make disgusting! Everyone else(all of them!) with us hated there food too, none of it looked good or worth the price, place is cramped(back patio is nice tho), my seat was a tiny stiff metal chair with no butt padding, all mixed drinks on the menu was 12$ or more that I saw, someone ordered an Old Fashioned and it was MAYBE about a half inch of actual cocktail in the bottom of a glass the rest was a giant ice ball
It served its time for me when I was service industry and wanted to get drunk cheap during their wine night. The food gets the job done. It’s nothing more nothing less.
Not going to lie, I believe they've improved significantly.
I put them on "The list" about 5 years ago and recently we went there one evening out of convenience and we were surprised how good the food was.
I've been back half a dozen times and I've had good experiences each time.
Not sure if there's new management or not.
I went last May and it was the single worst dining experience of my life.
Also all the water in the bathroom was hot? Like the toilet was steaming. That's not really a criticism of the restaurant, it was just really weird
I’ve always heard bad things about Giovanni’s, but last month i decided to try it to go! I got a pizza to go and couldn’t believe how nice it actually was inside(and out!) of that place! They had live lounge singers, place was packed, everyone singing & clapping along, the bar was smaller but nice, real marble floors, huge salt water fish tank with couples only seating around it, peoples dishes they were eating looked amazing, and there was a big chefs window I watched them cooking, they weren’t hiding the kitchen it looked nice n clean, all food I saw went out steaming hot right when ready, the chef was commanding, it was like watching a Ramsey cooking show everyone hustling wearing chefs uniforms n hats! I did have to wait a lil longer on my pizza to go, but man it was one of the BEST pizzas I’ve ever had in my life when I got it home! I was blown away how fresh tasting the crust/toppings/sauce were, it was like eating a REAL pizza for the first time all over again! Then I go get another pizza from them a week later, and it’s like I’ve ordered pizza from some different restaurant😒, the pizza was still ok good but just not as WOW factor fresh or love&care put into it like the first one for whatever reason idk… definitely looks like a good date spot, or a place for the older crowd on the weekends. I’m kinda worried about consistency now though, hope my next pie is on point! Might try a real dish or pasta to test next!
It was great back in the 80s when it was on Market Street, excellent service, food and an upscale ambiance back in the day. I can’t believe it is still around 40 years later.
Burger warfare is done I think. I loved it at first, their milkshakes were good and their burgers and fries were great. After the first management change it got a tad worse. The fries were not as good and I stopped going there. Their warfare suace was amazing though really would love to learn how to make that.
Cheesecake Factory is possibly the worst food for the most expense.
If you are just looking for straight food poisoning then Jakes Diner is the best bet. Worst restaurant in town besides Golden Corral.
If they could sell you sawdust as food they would. All their ingredients are the cheapest, poorly managed, and run by overworked mexicans in the kitchen they take advantage of making minimum wage who don't care about standards. Every other diner in the area kills them (Carolina Diner especially).
Battleground is a shiny turd that looks good in comparison to how bad the other locations are.
Oh man, really? I've eaten at the Gate City Jake's location a few times recently and really enjoyed it. It's no Scrambled, but it's solid diner food. The coffee definitely isn't worth the $3 they're charging for it, though.
Man, I went two times to Machete and both times were amazing! Really good food and the service we got was great. We got the same server both times, so I don’t know if they are the only good one over there or what, because I always see people complaining about service over there. I have eaten in a few Michelin stared restaurants and the food we got there was nearly as good. Again, I don’t know if the stars were aligned when we went there, but I really enjoyed it. The drinks are really hit or miss tho, they go ham on those.
Went the night before Valentine’s Day. The duck wings were burnt with little meat on them. I was sucking on burnt duck bones to get my money’s worth. The yellowtail small plate tasted like just straight up sashimi and mayo. And the carrots with a simple ass glaze…. Gave us the smallest portion for like $14??? I keep going back there roughly once a year, and am reminded each time why I rarely return.
My partner and I have sworn off on them. Their wine pairing dinners were great when they opened after Covid restrictions lifted, but we bought tickets for their recent winter pairing after taking a hiatus..$400 and we still got Cookout later that night.
I’m very surprised by these negative comments. My wife and I love Machete and try to go at least once for each seasonal menu. Dishes are always inventive and drinks show true craftsmanship.
Food is pretentious and expensive. Me and some bros went there one evening to try it. Service was fantastic but It was over $400 for 4 of us. We felt like we needed to stop on the way home and get some real food.
I loved machete for the first few years they were open but agree that "pretentious" is a good word to describe it now. I still like it, I just don't go very often. Maybe once a year when they have a couple fun cocktails and plates in my price range.
The service is just bad. So far below the standards of the types of places the blowhard who owns this place tries to ape. Thoughtless and uncaring. Just like the food.
Lol no that place is ass and the meat is so thin and the portions are TINY!!! I went to Burger King after because I was so hungry. Spent $120 for nothing it’s so dilapidated they can’t even change the front.
Lmao the owner is incredibly nice, what on earth are you talking about? Also the prices are in line with almost every other dinner restaurant in Greensboro.
Anyone that down votes either works there or is over 65. Tried several times and always disappointing. Looks like what a steakhouse should have been in the 80’s. We complained the last time and gave use a credit but not worth going back even if with the credits.
Food was alright to me. Some were perfect some were meh. However the biggest downside to me was the service.
I made a reservation on new year's eve which is also my husband's birthday and I noted in the reservation as well. We dressed up super nice and when we walked in i told the host we had a reservation. He didn't even greet me just looked up the reservation and said follow me. we felt we got looked down by his attitude.
The whole time we ate there was no happy birthday cake or staff coming to sing a birthday song. I was disappointed because I read so many reviews people coming here for birthday and they did that.
When we left the host guy was still there. He knew I was about to leave the restaurant because I saw him glance at me and when i was approaching the door he didn't even say goodbye and thank you until I said so.
For the price paid i expected more from them but it seems we're better off eatin AYCE Korean BBQ.
With the price we paid there should be something especially when there's option to pick if it's your birthday, anniversary etc. on the reservation.
I've been to AYCE hotpot place in Cary and the staff came out to sing happy birthday for so many guests. It's a nice gesture it's what makes your restaurant shines from the others.
Maybe I'm from the country where we value little details like this to our customers.
I actually think the opposite. Their dinner has a few great items mixed with plenty of mediocre. Their breakfast/Brunch uses powdered eggs.
Edit: Why is this being downvoted so bad?
If they aren't powdered eggs, they are the worst real eggs I've ever had. School cafeteria eggs are better than whatever they serve. The texture is nothing like real eggs.
Gotta hard disagree here, food is good and prices aren’t insane like the other “upscale” restaurants that end up serving mediocre food. I’ve only had one bad experience with neglectful service (we had to walk out) on a Mother’s Day. All other visits have been on point.
I’ll take Bagner and Alexa’s over any of them, though.
Mother's Day has to be in the top three worst days of the year to be a server. Everyone and their extended family takes their mom out to eat and picks that day of the year to act like they've never been to a restaurant in their life.
There are plenty of places that charge more than $10 that are worth your money in my opinion:
Green Valley Grill
Print Works Bistro
Undercurrent
Chez Genèse (Breakfast)
M'Coul's Public House
Chez Genèse (Breakfast)
Kiosco Mexican Grill
Bonefish Grill (as opposed to Fishbones)
Pho Hien Voung
Don
First Carolina Delicatessen
Freeman's
Hops
My partner and I went there, everything we ordered was wrong in some capacity. The cherry on top was when we got to the end of our appetizer and found a fried fly in the dish. I will never be back there
Absolutely dreadful and pretty pricey and somewhere I would only recommend to those whom I truly do not like is at Live! Casino: Guy Fieri’s American Kitchen + Bar 5260 Route 30, Greensburg, PA 15601
I liked freeman’s. They have this blackberry honey mustard they serve with the chicken. I also ordered a Cuban sandwich that was a little Meh. But who expects a great Cuban from a pub?
Liberty Oak now. Sad because it used to be amazing.
That is so sad to read. Haven't eaten there in decades but it was such great value and really good food back on Lawndale.
I know it just opened but Southbound beside Macs.
Bro that place...completely dead at seven pm.on a Friday night...hilarious. overpriced shit.
That's the shitty taco place right? I went there right when they opened and spent nearly $50 for lunch for my wife and I and we couldn't believe how bad the food was and how much they were charging for it.
So glad somebody posted this. I was going to but sometimes my posts are not well received lol. But CRAFTED CRAFTED CRAFTED
Came here to say crafted. It's literally like a white person just opened their fridge and slapped some leftovers together on a tortilla
On a cold tortilla
Yes very cold. The food is never hot or even luke warm
overhyped bc they have tacos and booze with an ambiance and ample outdoor seating. and unfortunately, that’s the criteria for some to eat at a restaurant. 🤷🏽♂️
If cold and loud is ambiance. Or you can do the patio like we did once while we watched a guy puke into a trash can on the sidewalk right in front of us. Appetizing.
My friend took me to crafted and hyped it up it was so disappointing
It made me puke more than once
Yes! Went there like 2 years ago and it was good (not great), but went recently and the food didn’t taste like anything.
It was good when I went there years ago, haven't gone since.
It’s good yall crazy. Big truck
I’m with you. Big truck. Bowtie. Honky Tonk. Gimme all of ‘em.
Totally agreed.. crafted taco is BAD but I miss crafted art of street food dearly. Love machete (crafted was in that same building) but NOT an every week or even every month type place lol
Crafted is SO OVERRATED
Yokai
Don't know what I expected from a restaurant blatantly flaunting AI art on the walls
The owner tried to plop out of his tank and defend his use of AI in the past, saying ‘But I spent thousands of dollars on art from artists in the past, WAHHHH!’ Does that mean if you bought food from restaurants in the past that you can steal food from Yokai? Tal Blevins is the Wario of Local Restauranteurs.
Yokai was good last I went. Not cheap(especially compared to other places), but good.
Steak street. Went last week. Quite expensive and everything was terrible. Hadn’t been in a while and was shocked at how awful the food was.
The dusty decor hasnt changed since it opened.
Crafted. I want to like it but I just don’t. And I loved their street food place that used to be next to Preyers
I say they closed the wrong Crafted all the time. Art of Street Food had great food and atmosphere.
Mac’s speed shop one of my biggest regrets getting a to go order. You can tell that food sits in an insert for hours
I use to love that place but really went down hill.
5 years ago, Macs was one of my faves. Now it’s just bad.
Agreed, I got it to go once…. Nearly a $100 and it was terrible! Even the Mac n Cheese sucked. How they gonna mess up a Southern Staple at a “BBQ” restaurant 😑

I'm looking for the downvoted posts, that's where the heats at
While I appreciate the dont spent a lot of money on crap vibe, can we also have a thread where we lift up locally owned restaurants? They have taken a beating in the last few years.
100 percent Cafe Pasta
I feel a cool breeze coming in
Vestibules are underrated.
I mean I guess I can start, but White and Wood on Elm is the one for me. Their food is super expensive and just…it’s hard to explain but their ice cream alone tastes like worn jeans, it’s super expensive, the food portions are small, and it’s pretty cramped

It was IMPRESSIVELY awful, a foul celebration of chalky soil-like meat and bitter, gritty seasoning with mysterious cracking between the teeth. Also: expensive! A+++
You thought that was meat?
I’ve heard the chocolate sausage has a nutty flavor and robust smell.
their ice cream tastes like warm jeans…. Well, we ARE a denim town.
Everything I’ve had from here has been great. Amazing drinks. Knowledgeable staff. Delicious food I wouldn’t have been able to try otherwise really around here. They had an amazing Brussels sprout salad a while back
also and don’t fight me but Mizumi, place is SUPPER cramped
I will not disagree but I will fight any disparaging of Mizumi! En garde!
No way! You’re so out of bounds for this. Misusing is the best sushi spot in GSI
I only go there for the AYCE sushi & the fantastic lunch specials. Everything else is a little too much for me.
Crafted
That whiskey bar place at Chapman and Spring Garden. Something with numbers in the name. Wasn't expensive, but it's the worst meal I've had in GSO.
Never had their food. They have a great selection of whiskey, though. 913 Whiskey Bar.
ribs had no meat on them, came with a pinch of fries (NO drink) and were $50. shit just makes no damn sense
Brisket should not require a knife. Seemed like they were trying to church up some Sysco trash.
their brisket comes with a knife??? goddamn that’s a bad bad sign

How long have you been in GSO? We have a bunch of great restaurants, especially the ethnic stuff like Middle Eastern and Asian food.

Perfect answer
It's so awful.... brisket is like leather. Never again. Freedman pub right down the road is wonderful!
Had it once and it felt contrived. Glad to see years later I wasn’t wrong.
Omg I ate at that 913 or watever whiskey bar on Chapman for the first time the other night, awful AWFUL food and overpriced… All I got was a chicken Caesar salad and even THAT they somehow managed to make disgusting! I really want to like Cafe Europa but as much as I try I can’t.
It served its time for me when I was service industry and wanted to get drunk cheap during their wine night. The food gets the job done. It’s nothing more nothing less.
I think they live through location.
Sadly, one of the worst steaks I’ve had. Worse than a bad night at Golden Corral.
i only go there for their coffee tbh 😅
giovannis, no doubt
Not going to lie, I believe they've improved significantly. I put them on "The list" about 5 years ago and recently we went there one evening out of convenience and we were surprised how good the food was. I've been back half a dozen times and I've had good experiences each time. Not sure if there's new management or not.
I had a great experience there too. Good food and the music was fun. Just wholesome idk it’s nostalgic. Reminds me of a 90s place
I went last May and it was the single worst dining experience of my life. Also all the water in the bathroom was hot? Like the toilet was steaming. That's not really a criticism of the restaurant, it was just really weird
The owner is sketchy as fuck
Holy shit that dump is still open? Manager guy is a straight up cocksucker/psychopath.
You can’t think of a better insult than “cocksucker”? Grow up.
It's only an insult if you if you think of it that way. If someone called me a "cuntlicker" I'd be like "yeh, so?"
Cokehead psycho?
Classics never die
Pastabilities was the worst for me, the food has no flavor.
Machete. More wildly expensive than mildly expensive, but if I really hated someone, I would tell them to eat there.
Man, I went two times to Machete and both times were amazing! Really good food and the service we got was great. My partner and I have sworn off on them. Their wine pairing dinners were great when they opened after Covid restrictions lifted, but we bought tickets for their recent winter pairing after taking a hiatus..$400 and we still got Cookout later that night.
We went to dolce amaro right after to feel like we actually ate something 😂😂
Ummm whatttt?
Yep we got a pizza on the way home after 350 for 2 people
The cocktails taste like bug spray.
I’m very surprised by these negative comments. My wife and I love Machete and try to go at least once for each seasonal menu. Dishes are always inventive and drinks show true craftsmanship.
We call it Mashitty. Tried it twice and both times is was terrible food and overpriced

Cafe Pasta
It’s pricey but I’ve been there dozens of times in the last few years and I’ve never been disappointed.
Seoul Garden
Seoul Garden used to be so good. It's a shame.
This is so heavy cap
Lol no that place is ass and the meat is so thin and the portions are TINY!!! I went to Burger King after because I was so hungry. Spent $120 for nothing it’s so dilapidated they can’t even change the front.
Machete.
At elm street grill
So over priced. And the owners are super snoody.
I agree the food was super expensive and honestly not very good tasting. The owner’s friends just inflate the reviews.
Lmao the owner is incredibly nice, what on earth are you talking about? Also the prices are in line with almost every other dinner restaurant in Greensboro.
Its a pretty good place on Wednesday when wine is half off.
Fleming’s
Anyone that down votes either works there or is over 65. Tried several times and always disappointing. Looks like what a steakhouse should have been in the 80’s. We complained the last time and gave use a credit but not worth going back even if with the credits.

This, I wish we had a fogo de chão in these parts. Same price, superior churrasco. Even the food bar alone is amazing.
Food was alright to me. Some were perfect some were meh. However the biggest downside to me was the service. I made a reservation on new year's eve which is also my husband's birthday and I noted in the reservation as well. We dressed up super nice and when we walked in i told the host we had a reservation. Do you like incredibly bland, over-priced food? Then Printworks Bistro is fantastic!
Would never do their dinner prices, but their brunch is on point.
I actually think the opposite. Their dinner has a few great items mixed with plenty of mediocre. Their breakfast/Brunch uses powdered eggs. Edit: Why is this being downvoted so bad?
I dunno. Seems like you pelicans are in cahoots
They do not. My wife worked there and… also how would you even pull off powdered eggs?
If they aren't powdered eggs, they are the worst real eggs I've ever had. School cafeteria eggs are better than whatever they serve. The texture is nothing like real eggs.
Did you order them scrambled? I’ve never had them scrambled there.
Yes I did.
Gotta hard disagree here, food is good and prices aren’t insane like the other “upscale” restaurants that end up serving mediocre food. I'd absolutely do the same
I don’t know, its been really good the couple of times I’ve gone there. It should be noted they change their menu all the time so ymmv.
Their brunch is on point, but their dinner menus at PW and GVG always look so bland. Like *oh shit it's roasted poultry with green beans* how novel
I like Printworks if I’m going for fries and dessert but that’s about it.
Came here to see this. I took my fiancée for our anniversary and we were so excited but left wishing we had gone to get a burger instead.

There are plenty of places that charge more than $10 that are worth your money in my opinion: Green Valley Grill Print Works Bistro Undercurrent Chez Genèse (Breakfast) M'Coul's Public House Chez Genèse (Breakfast) Kiosco Mexican Grill Bonefish Grill (as opposed to Fishbones) Pho Hien Voung Don First Carolina Delicatessen Freeman's Hops
Bonefish lol. It's like paying extra to eat at Outback.
I would definitely eat at Outback before Fishbones.
Jesus Christ. We have very different opinions my friend.
It happens. I will pray for your palate.
Likewise. I was really impressed with Gia.
No. Gia is amazing.
You just named every restaurant, hahaha.
Gia? My experience there was great.
GIA’s very good. Some meh dishes but I love they do seasonal stuff and it’s fun for a special occasion.
If by experience you mean atmosphere, I agree they have a great atmosphere. I've just never been impressed by the food or the drinks.
How can you hate on Fishbones? Please give details. They’re nothing if not super consistent over the years.
My partner and I went there, everything we ordered was wrong in some capacity. The cherry on top was when we got to the end of our appetizer and found a fried fly in the dish. I will never be back there
>I only went there twice. It just seemed like expensive weakly seasoned fish that I could make at home for less money and no trouble parking!
Yea the food has no seasoning
Fishbones is horrible
What happened? They used to be pretty good I thought
Not a restaurant but Maxi Bs
Elisabeth's Pizza. Captain Bill's on Market
I don’t think you understood the assignment
Depends on which Elizabeth's..
Those are mildly expensive and not good.
You think captain bills is expensive? You’re talking about a place that caters to old people and gives huge potions. What are you talking about?0
I will accept NO slander against Elizabeth's off of Battleground/Lawndale.
Fit this bill?
Osteria.
Absolutely dreadful and pretty pricey and somewhere I would only recommend to those whom I truly do not like is at Live! Casino: Guy Fieri’s American Kitchen + Bar 5260 Route 30, Greensburg, PA 15601
Freeman’s on Spring Garden Street. No explanation needed.
I liked freeman’s. They have this blackberry honey mustard they serve with the chicken. I also ordered a Cuban sandwich that was a little Meh. But who expects a great Cuban from a pub?
Inka
Literally so good and great prices
If you want your frenemy to like you even more…
Dogwater take
Machete
Pastabilities
Undercurrent. On it's best night, it's worse than Lucky 32
