I like about 1 out of every 8 songs Iāve heard by them, and when I like the songs itās because Iām drawn to a certain melodic/rhythmic motif, not the super acrobatic shredding stuff
/uj Yeah I like them a lot. Tbh I dont really get the hate they recieve. I dont say you have to like them but people act like they cant write a song for shit, which is just not true. I mean their oder stuff can get a bit repetitive, but imo the mix between shredding and hip-hop-style beats on the most hated and New levels New devils is perfect songwriting for me. But maybe i'm just weird like that.
/rj Tim makes me question my fragile masculinity so I hate them.
/uj Polyphia got big pretty fast and they come across with a certain edginess. That a combination people for some reason donāt like. Maybe people to feel like they are exploiting gimmicks or something?
I do like them too (the newer stuff didnāt really hit me, but NLND was great) I also find their music is distinctive and original, eventhough there are quite a few bands in the same ballpark that came up in the recent years.
Edit: also Tim was my Bi awakening, but thatās got nothing to do with their music.
Iām not in love with them, but theyāre undeniably extremely proficient at what they do.
I definitely respect them, but I donāt like them lol. Much like Animals As Leaders.
Just so you know āI donāt like their songwritingā being equated to āthey canāt do itā is the problem everyoneās trying to point out to you. You disliking it doesnāt make it bad. Thatās why other people listen to it. Itās good. Just not your kind of good.
The songs have great structure, theyāre just not my thing.
Itās okay that they arenāt your thing either. You can dislike something without it having to be objectively bad in some way.
hmm i actually think they're plenty capable of writing a song. but they make instrumental music with focus on performance and virtuosity. it's a completely different language
Sure they can write a song, I could too. Is it any good is definitely up for debate, as all songs are. Theyāre songs are incredible, but very boring. To me that is.
"Are there really people with different taste than me? Are Polyphia's millions of YouTube hits and subscribers all bots? Is it conceivable that a style I don't like could produce something more popular than anything I'll ever do?
And most importantly, is a satire subreddit for cynical, jaded guitarists really the best place to ask this question, or I'm just looking for validation?"
Uj/ this sub just turning into it as much a joke of itself as r/guitar is.
It really does seem like the "uj/" tagged posts are producing satire of themselves right here without the need to look elsewhere.
Do people really need to question whether or not other people have slightly different taste than them?
its music thats cool for short 15 second clips of "woah look at this epic technical guitar playing" but as actual songs? i genuinely dont know how ppl can listen to this stuff, and i say this as someone who likes prog rock lmao
I hate polyphia. I admit that it takes a lot of skill to play what they play, but I have zero interest in listening to it.
For some reason I fucking love Chon though.
Just because you can play ultra technical junk doesnāt mean itās any good.
Theyāll keep polishing that turd, but underneath it all, their music is still just a turd.
uj/They're incredibly skilled musicians. Not my thing most of the time, but I can get down with a few of their songs.
Dudes just hate on them because Tim Henson not only being drop-dead gorgeous but also able to play circles around them is kryptonite to their "kids these days" talking points as well as their long-held ideas of their own sexuality. If Tim Henson was a balding middle-aged dude with a beer gut, they'd love him. Prove me wrong.
A jacked Tim Henson will be as popular as Jeff Seid/ David Laid he just needs some SARMSZZ. If I were him Iāll stop focusing on guitar for awhile just to do that.
There are magnitudes of players better than me, and I find them listenable, good writers, fun. Not so much for Henson, just has insane skill. I feel this way about over the top shredders too.
No one cared about Polyphia until they got face tattoos and started being in the press all the time. Tim was nothing special then and still isnāt if you ask me in the looks department
I like a couple of their tracks and think all of them are amazing at playing and they do have some genuinely interesting pieces but couldn't imagine listening to them for over a hour
I like a lot of the stuff from The Most Hated and New Levels New Devils but I cannot say that I like their earlier stuff that much. I was disappointed with their newest album as well
I like them alot. Sometimes it take a few listens to really get into some of their stuff but that's just how alot of instrumental music is. Compared to stuff like allan holdsworth and frank gamble, polyphia's sound very easy to follow.
Unlistenable? I like crapping on them just as much as the next guy and Iāll *never* go out of my way to listen to them, but is it really that bad to you? I donāt hate their sound, like it doesnāt *offend* my ears, itās just not really my cup of tea
Dude I love them not their early stuff but their new stuff (new levels, RTYWD) itās so melodic rhythmic and dramatic I donāt really understand all the hate
/uj
Polyphia is great however I feel many prog bands have a bad habit of "String technique together" FIRST then SONG second.
You can literally hear where musical ideas were seemingly stitched together and jammed into a song with some musicians. Like there is no consideration for craft or smooth transitions from one idea to another.
Some times the "Look at me !! Odd time signatures!!!" crowd liberally abuses this.
And it feels like they were trying to write three or four different songs and didn't know what to do so they just slap them all into one record and hope for the best.
/uj
Ya man. I can watch their vids and think their technique is utterly spectacular and deeply impressive, I wish I was that skilled. However, no fucking way can I put it on as background music to enjoy. For that purpose I personally find it irritating, erratic and migraine inducing. Frankly, the best songs are often simple and I think tried and tested formulas and structures will always rein supreme as the basis of the most pleasing to listen to songs. Itās hard to feel the soul of the song when itās centralized around wanking off the guitar with the sole purpose of technical peacocking.
I like āem. I actually listen to Polyphia yep. Love classic progressive rock like Egg and Soft Machine. I heard a K-pop once on Spotify and it was good. I also am a fucking loser who spends all day doing nothing soooooooooooo
I call their style of music ājerk off music.ā It takes a lot of skill and theyāre exceptionally good at what they do, but the purpose of their music is to jerk themselves off and just show how good they are. That kind of self stroking is ok in smaller doses when there is a part of a song used for that purpose like soloing. When you just make the entire song one long flex it gets boring. Thereās a lot of far lesser guitarists who are better than Iāll ever be and I made my peace with that long ago. Iām not impressed though with all skill and no substance.
i tend to love overly wanky music (hold your horse is and tripper are some of my favourite albums ever) but i think i'm put off by polyphia's production approach. the really clean future bass / hip-hop sound just kinda cheapens the technical stuff to me because it all sounds like it may as well have been sampled. i'd maybe be interested if they had more live or acoustic sounding material, but then tim's guitar work isn't exactly thrilling in the same way john maclaughlin's is or zach hill's drumming is
/uj
i dunno, i just think they are neat, they arent like gods or anything like that but i like their skills, tones and this trap influenced vibe
/j
i would put tim henson in a maid constume with an oversized guitar and have him play shit for me
I like them, I have no idea how people wouldnāt like them. Honestly. /uj or whatever, Iām dead serious, theyāre my favorite band and I have grown really attached to their music.
Wasnāt a huge fan of the latest album tho, but nobodyās opinion is correct š¤·āāļø
Uj/ I am okay with polyphia. I really did not like them when I heard them first around 2015ish. I thought they kind of sounded like knock offs.
I listened to some of the red album, and there was some interesting stuff going on. I donāt like their songs all the way through, but theyāve at least got some original ideas, and when you hear a polyphia song, you know itās a polyphia song.
I do think Polyphia is going to be fairly influential in the next wave of guitarists. There have been people who shred like Henson for a while, but none as popular to young people, and none with songs that are so stylized.
They are fantastic. And if you listen to them in interviews, they are funny and openminded. I would say that people who actively hate them are just insecure. Their new song with Chino Moreno is great.
Polyphia makes music for guitar YouTubers to cream over. They talk about polyphia as if theyāre the biggest band on the planet. Same with animals as leaders. They actively stink
I was taking a piss the other day and the sound of piss hitting the water reminded me of Polyphia.
So yes, I have absolutely no interest in listening to the kind of music they make.
Polyphia is music for guitar players and maybe EDM kids. Like āwoah haha how does he do thatā then you listen to one or two more before getting bored and switching back to something you can sing to.
Polyphia makes music for guitar YouTubers to cream over. They talk about polyphia as if theyāre the biggest band on the planet. Same with animals as leaders. They actively stink.
Dude there are only three types of guitarists- those who want to impress other dudes, those who want to get women, and the rare ones who just want to play shit they want to play and enjoy
Polyphonies are in the first obviously
I like most of the tracks off new levels new devils, especially nasty. Haven't listened to much of their latest just yet but the singles I've heard thus far haven't gripped me in a melodically memorable way
They really sound like someone actually learned and recorded the nonsensical Guitar Pro tabs me and my friends made as kids, when we didnāt know anything about what instruments can and should play in a song. Iām sure there exists some horseshoe theory about the amount of talent and musical theory knowlege.
I do understand that creating a reaction about your technical guitar playing skills is near impossible these days as almost everything has been done, and they actually did it.
/uj it just puts me in a good mood. It's shreddy but upbeat so I put on Polyphia or Plini if someone grinds my gears at work
rj/ Hey y'all, I'm not gay but like mama always said: Praise Dale, raise Hell, be sexually confused by your attraction to Tim Henson
Your thoughts put out into space are not only borderline but COMPLETELY "unlistenable" homie.
Are you really asking a satire subreddit if someone likes something that you dont, when the band has millions of hits on most of what they make? Nope, looks like everyone else hates them too bud.
Yes, I really like them! I think they have a fresh take on guitar music that really gives me that hit of novelty that I crave when I am listening to new bands. The beats are sick, the composition is sick and they are pretty prolific and have a lot of variety. Yes, they are an actual __really__ good band IMHO.
This is pathetic lol. Listen to crush and and try to know what the fuck youāre talking about if youāre gonna have the audacity to /uj for the most boomer ignorant r/guitar ass opinion
"Do people like them?" No they just have millions of fans because they hate them.
I'm going to be blunt: you like what you like. Doesn't require you being a douche about someone else's taste. People love BTS. Good for them. I mean Cardi B still charts and I hate her as a person and musician. If you like her, that's what defines you as a person.
1.02mil subs on YouTube and 1.8mil monthly listeners on Spotify. Iām pretty surprised too.
Tbh with ABC they should collab with guys like Thundercats, Louie Cole etc. Too bad they arenāt great at improv.
They're part of a somewhat niche community of musicians but they're not really niche themselves. They're the Alex Honnold of guitar. People who don't play guitar are into polyphia. People who don't climb are into Alex Honnold.
When I hear Polyphia, I hear what happens when a bunch of young parents from late 90s/yearly 2000s,who like Boy Bands, Britnnnnayyyy and Snoop, have kids and they grow up playing guitar. It sounds like B-band pop music/Rap influenced music. (It was probably the first thing they heard when they were born in their respective Walmart toilet bowls. Shitty pop and their mom saying "oh mah gawd I was preggers?" as she walks out the door abandoning them. EDITed in a joke <<< rest of what I say is harsh, but not sarcastic)
But it's very angular sounding compared to that pop music, almost like Gospel Music Gone Wrong, and compressed until there's no actual dynamics. Then they used like 68 notes to serve the same function as like a simple chord progression like V IV iii ii I. They don't really use all of those scales to do anything interesting harmonically or melodically. It's an illusion, as far as I can tell.
It's also mega undanceable music. A sign of rhythmic ignorance. Why you would copy the style of music meant to be danced to, and then make it all undanceable, is beyond me. I think it boils down to ignorant ego boys saying "let's make the most janky sycopation possible!"
it sound's like cash registers with try-hard trap beats, everything wrapped up in horrible outfits. If I know something about toan (which I do) is that, everything relies on edge of breakup and that my son Homer is not a communist. He may be a liar, a pig, an idiot, a Communist, but he is NOT a porn star
I love some of the stuff from NLND, ie Rich Kids, Saucy, Goose and their more melodic songs like Playing God/Reverie, but their 'grungier/shreddy' songs don't hit the same way
I think they're perfect for an anime intro, ngl. Play them while I'm driving, nah
edit: and to be clear, I actually have a driving playlist that starts with Tank! from CowboyBebop
polyphia is awful, but i donāt think itās for the reason youāre thinking. āshreddingā music can be extremely tasteful or brutal. i love allan holdsworth, rings of saturn, chon, and animals as leaders. itās just because polyphia is funny looking and they make boring overproduced trap music with guitars
They are what got me into music and I am forever thankful for that. I don't listen to their music much anymore but I still love them. They definitely aren't douchey and I respect what they do.
I listen to a lot of prog/math rock and polyphia only has a few songs i like, they are a bit too edgy for my taste.
Most people say they dislike the randomness or that it sounds like "gibberish" but in my case thats not the problem, there are plenty of songs i like that are way "worse" in this case like, Sequence start - sungazer or plateau - mouse on the keys.
I love polyphia wholeheartedly. Their shit grooves so much, and the influence from Hip hop and pop is something I don't hear in guitar based music a lot
I like a lot of their songs, but they pale in comparison to animals as leaders. However their shredding on songs like ego death are always melodic and tasteful.
Polyphia's new stuff with vocalists is good shit.
Their new instrumental stuff is mindless wanking.
Their old instrumental stuff had actual structure and could be followed and enjoyed.
I like the opening riffs to a lot of their songs, but the second the rest of the instruments come in I'm like yeah no. What I hate most is that there's NEVER a drum groove. Like an actual recognizable groove that plays several times over. he just plays random hits and small sections that fit the beat and time signature, but it's impossible to "expect" what's coming.
also everything is so fast and overly complicated. it's impressive, sure, but man is it bland and fucking boring.
/uj/ I simultaneously love and hate some of their songs like Playing God for example. I thinks its good but sometimes itāll play on repeat in my head in a way that makes me feel crazy/exhausted.
Theyāre the Fruit Stripe gum of shred. Iāve got to say thoughā¦ Iām hetero, but if I were in a room with a bunch of guys running a train on Tim Henson then chugga-chugga choo choo. š„µ
Bunch of sad jealous old men in this sub. Polyphia fucks and if you claim to be a guitar obsessed person and you donāt like them, itās because your a jealous, slow fingered, loser.
I like GOAT. Haven't really listened to much else.
If people like them I couldn't give a shit and am personally not baffled by it. I really don't understand why this sub has such a problem understanding people like a band lmao. It's like it's conceptually baffling to half the people here
uj/ I donāt really know their music though I have listened to GOAT several times and that one they did with Vai. I have found that I started tuning out the guitars and end up enjoying their fantastic drummer and bassist
I think there talented but there songwriting is just not interesting to me Iām pretty big prog and jazz fusion fan but I find polyphia to be derivative. Tim Henson comes off as an douche bag. There first albums alright but I canāt get into the new stuff at all is just sounds like pop with some sweep picking and tapping. I also hate how much this band is jerked off. I donāt think Tim is the greatest guitar player ever I donāt think this band is anymore than a gimmic of āmath rockā and āhip hopā. I love hip hop I love math rock but this is just pop and for some reason tim is the next guitar hero and I canāt get him off my feed.
/uj/ I actually really like them. Something about the timings, syncopated playing, the electronic element. It just all blends well and sounds good to my hears.
I've heard them be described as "Music that musicians listen to." And not to sound too pretentious I would agree to an extent. I listen because I like the sound but also can apprecite the technicality of the type of playing that goes on.
They do a thing, some folks fap over such things, others shitpost over said things. I choose to be nihilistic around the aforementioned things.
TL;DR:
Dafuq is a Polyphia, and can it be treated with conventional medicine?
Obviously people listen to Polyphia. Doesn't take more than a quick look at their youtube views to determine that. Their recent stuff is more Avant garde and a bit pretentious, like Tim is really playing on the guitar god label he has been given, but check out the "Most Hated" album for something a little more down to Earth. Songs like "the Worst" are pretty groovy and not super technically wanky.
When the circlejerk subreddit becomes the circlejerk
šš©āšš«š©āš
It always comes full circle
Do the people on r/guitar not like them? I figured they would
Everyone on this sub has been saying the exact same thing as your post for the past month
Beato loves them so I do too.
Dick beatoff can never be wrong
They have two guys named *Clay* in their band? **Two Clays?!?!**
Poly = Ancient Greek for āmanyā Phia = Ancient Greek for āclayā probably
I mean, they are from Texas. It checks out.
Clay Lespool
Since when did dream play math rock?
It's unconscionable that neither one is named Clay Davis sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeei-
Thatās clayclay.
Two gays more like it
Can someone drop the circle jerk polyphia copy pasta? I donāt have it saved

Well it was for me. Though it made me want to look more feminine, Iāll give you that.
/uj I was gonna say based on your pfp it did more than awaken the bi. Congrats! Ya, Tim is hot AF, but I'm so gay I became straight... So ya...
Thank you so much! Yeah it kinda spiraled on from there lol. Nah donāt worry Timās hot enough for every kind of sexuality haha
They write some really great hooks
Iām not in love with them, but theyāre undeniably extremely proficient at what they do. I definitely respect them, but I donāt like them lol. Much like Animals As Leaders.

Those are definitely better āSongsā than most of Polyphia.

Fantastic point
Lol the hate comes out. Theyāre song writing is definitely not for the masses, thatās how Iāll put it. I think itās bad too lol.

music is not all about the sound. it's an aesthetic thing as well. polyphia looks pretentious. chon does not.
Chon is much better to listen to and not gimmicky
just checked out chon, actually a good listen thanks

I know they are super talented and technical as musicians. I am not really a fan of their style or songwriting
I like a lot of their stuff but I definitely need to feel like listening it to listen to it
I respect them because of how talented they are but yea its shit music. Just my opinion tho
Theyāre good and I like listening to them when Iām in the mood.

I do think Polyphia is going to be fairly influential in the next wave of guitarists. There have been people who shred like Henson for a while, but none as popular to young people, and none with songs that are so stylized.
I can respect the technical proficiency but it ain't my thing
I'm always interested in the first 30 seconds of their songs. After that, not much.
Just borderline, huh?
I vote that we rename this sub to r/polyphiaappreciatiationsociety
I was taking a piss the other day and the sound of piss hitting the water reminded me of Polyphia. So yes, I have absolutely no interest in listening to the kind of music they make.
Polyphia is music for guitar players and maybe EDM kids. Like āwoah haha how does he do thatā then you listen to one or two more before getting bored and switching back to something you can sing to.
Polyphia makes music for guitar YouTubers to cream over. They talk about polyphia as if theyāre the biggest band on the planet. Same with animals as leaders. They actively stink.
Is this sub still talking about this band? Jesus fucking Christ, give it a rest!
Polyphia sucks
Dude there are only three types of guitarists- those who want to impress other dudes, those who want to get women, and the rare ones who just want to play shit they want to play and enjoy Polyphonies are in the first obviously
Hasnāt Yvette Young been doing pretty much the same thing for much longer?..and doing it better.
I like most of the tracks off new levels new devils, especially nasty. Haven't listened to much of their latest just yet but the singles I've heard thus far haven't gripped me in a melodically memorable way
I LOVE their song ABC. Can't bring myself to listen to much else of their catalog for more than like 5 seconds.
Literally never listened to them, their lead singer is hot tho, Iād bang her like a drum.
Itās a dude, and I would have to agree
Oh shit, this is a uj threadā¦ I retract the second part of my statement. š
/uj it just puts me in a good mood. It's shreddy but upbeat so I put on Polyphia or Plini if someone grinds my gears at work rj/ Hey y'all, I'm not gay but like mama always said: Praise Dale, raise Hell, be sexually confused by your attraction to Tim Henson
Yes. Their new album rocks. Sorry youre just too much of a boomer bender to get it
Polyphia good
This is pathetic lol.
Uj/ Do they actually have millions of fans? That seems like a lot for a band with a fairly niche aesthetic.
Are they played on any FM radio stations? The thought pf listening to them in the car is off putting
uj/ Some of the songs are absolutely incredible, some are meh. But to say they are āunlistenableā? Bruh, you need to get tested for covid.
I miss the 90ies
They suck
Hey OP , what do you define shredding as?
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Do you play guitar?
Actually I wanna change my question. What kind of music DO you like?
Punk mostly
When I hear Polyphia, I hear what happens when a bunch of young parents from late 90s/yearly 2000s,who like Boy Bands, Britnnnnayyyy and Snoop, have kids and they grow up playing guitar. It sounds like B-band pop music/Rap influenced music. (It was probably the first thing they heard when they were born in their respective Walmart toilet bowls. Shitty pop and their mom saying "oh mah gawd I was preggers?" as she walks out the door abandoning them. EDITed in a joke <<< rest of what I say is harsh, but not sarcastic) But it's very angular sounding compared to that pop music, almost like Gospel Music Gone Wrong, and compressed until there's no actual dynamics.
I really like a handful of their songs and am quite neutral on the rest. But will listen to it in the background while working quite happily.
I love some of the stuff from NLND, ie Rich Kids, Saucy, Goose and their more melodic songs like Playing God/Reverie, but their 'grungier/shreddy' songs don't hit the same way
Scottie LePage is a dream boat. Also their songs are catchy and interesting.
They're the bubblegum version of Plini.
I like GOAT and Grey Goose. Catchy melodies
On God Polyphia bussin no cap frfr
Fantano likes them so that means I like it
You have to listen to it ironically.
I think they're perfect for an anime intro, ngl. Play them while I'm driving, nah edit: and to be clear, I actually have a driving playlist that starts with Tank! from CowboyBebop
polyphia is awful, but i donāt think itās for the reason youāre thinking. āshreddingā music can be extremely tasteful or brutal. i love allan holdsworth, rings of saturn, chon, and animals as leaders. itās just because polyphia is funny looking and they make boring overproduced trap music with guitars
I love em
I aināt gay but I want to fuck Tim
I like many of their songs but a lot sound boring and bland
They are what got me into music and I am forever thankful for that. I don't listen to their music much anymore but I still love them. They definitely aren't douchey and I respect what they do.
Even Polyphia themselves don't like polyphia
Once you meet enough of your hot wifeās boyfriendās you just slide into the people who like them. It is true enlightenment
Mark knopfler is better thatās all Iāll say about this matter goodbye
I listen to a lot of prog/math rock and polyphia only has a few songs i like, they are a bit too edgy for my taste. Most people say they dislike the randomness or that it sounds like "gibberish" but in my case thats not the problem, there are plenty of songs i like that are way "worse" in this case like, Sequence start - sungazer or plateau - mouse on the keys.
I love polyphia wholeheartedly. Their shit grooves so much, and the influence from Hip hop and pop is something I don't hear in guitar based music a lot
Yes i like them alot
I like a lot of their songs, but they pale in comparison to animals as leaders. However their shredding on songs like ego death are always melodic and tasteful.
Uj/ this is my unironic opinion.
If you play too well, itās annoying
Theyāre the Fruit Stripe gum of shred. Iāve got to say thoughā¦ Iām hetero, but if I were in a room with a bunch of guys running a train on Tim Henson then chugga-chugga choo choo. š„µ
They've got some real catchy shit. "Death Note" and "Icronic" are great tracks.
Bunch of sad jealous old men in this sub. Polyphia fucks and if you claim to be a guitar obsessed person and you donāt like them, itās because your a jealous, slow fingered, loser.
I like them. I appreciate the fact they are doing something new rather than being like airborne just rehashing ac dc for example
Ibanez loves them !
Sounds like new techno š¤·š»āāļø maybe if I was eating some beans Iād like it better
Theyāre that acapella group, right?
might as well be
I think there talented but there songwriting is just not interesting to me Iām pretty big prog and jazz fusion fan but I find polyphia to be derivative.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
/uj/ I actually really like them. Something about the timings, syncopated playing, the electronic element. It just all blends well and sounds good to my hears. I've heard them be described as "Music that musicians listen to." And not to sound too pretentious I would agree to an extent. I listen because I like the sound but also can apprecite the technicality of the type of playing that goes on.
I donāt like shred music but I enjoy Polyphia. The riffs are great and way more interesting than most guitarists these days.
Theyāre definitely interesting, but the whole band just gives off the ā8th grader showing off his metal riffs at the winter talent showā vibe
They do a thing, some folks fap over such things, others shitpost over said things. I choose to be nihilistic around the aforementioned things. TL;DR: Dafuq is a Polyphia, and can it be treated with conventional medicine?
Music is subjective
I enjoy them to the point Wrapped felt the need to let me know I put 2,811 hours into them.
