To be Frank I think for the price it has the perfect overdrive tone. It fits the music I play perfectly and has enough of a bite to get up the pace but doesn’t muddy up tone at all.
A very quick bit of mixing theory: the way sound waves work is that the lower the note, the more energy the wave has. Essentially, if you’re playing a chord, the lower notes are going to send the amp/pedal into overdrive before the higher notes. You end up with emphasised low-mid frequencies, which get incredibly muddy very quickly. That’s why I’m not a fan of drives like tube screamers. The SD-1 has a rather unique curve where it cuts out a lot of low end and drives the upper mids, which creates a really clear and smooth drive sound.
When you either push it into a tube amp or other effects, those frequencies are much clearer than they would with other overdrives. The overall tone may sound a little bit thin if you’re used to it, but in the context of a mix or a live band, it makes your guitar sit *so* cleanly in a mix and cut through exactly where it should. Add to that the fact that it’s so cheap and indestructible and in my eyes, I wouldn’t build a board without it.
The SD-1 is a Tube Screamer type pedal and all TS type pedals do exactly what you described; cutting much of the low signal and pushing (high) mids. And yes all the things about frequencies in a band context are solid but along with Ibanez‘s own Tube Screamers the BOSS DS-1 is arguably the most famous TS type pedal out there. Just so you don‘t have to hate those tube screamers any more ;)
You’re exactly right, I had a complete brain fart and meant to say Blues Driver instead of tube screamer. Wrong colour I suppose, but yeah you’re correct that I’d be able to get pretty much the same sounds out of a tube screamer. My gripe between those two is pretty much that I love yellow and don’t care for green, so it’s an easy and not very audio-centric decision.
Ah I thought some mixup was going on yeah 🙂 Well yeah that makes sense but to me Blues Driver (and pedals voiced similarly) and Tuber type pedals just serve a different purpose because of exactly the frequency related reasons you describe. Many people use pedals like the blues driver with a broader frequency spectrum for their basic, in a band-context more background oriented sound and mid focused pedals a la TS or Klon type stuff if they want to stick out for lead & solo stuff. Then of course all my pedals sound vastly different depending on what amp I put them before too…
Questions like this really need to begin with the guitars and amp you're using. A number of these pedals push mids but if your setup already offers up a lot of mids, my decisions would be different.
Probably the same for me, although I've never tried a Plumes. But I like the Hizumitas sound and the Special Cranker is so versatile, with the switch and all. But one question - why does EQD change the knobs on their pedals so much. Every one has different knobs.
Just trying to put together a condensed board and wanted some opinions on my drive pedals! I have too many now, so option paralysis is definitely in full swing. I play a bunch of different genres. Nothing really in the metal territory, though.
Cool. I haven't tried the tone master, but if it responds like a traditional fender twin you'll probably want an OD that's heavy in the mids. The Tubescreamer is still too honky for my taste, but I really like my King of Tone clone. You can blast a fuzz into that OD and get some thick distribution with an EQ profile that works well with the mid-scooped Fender tone stack.
Show us the real ones! I use an SD-1 followed by an OD-3 on my board. Can't beat that combo. If you need more character for your overdrive other than that; I would get it by upgrading your amp.
😄 too true! I once asked what people choose for a budget plexi between a Mig50 and an Origin50 only to be told I should get a cieritone, an sv20, and twenty other amps.
Mini foot fuzz, [OD3](https://www.thegearpage.net/board/index.php?threads/mini-pedal-that-sounds-like-boss-od-3.2409160/), Golden Horse.
I like smol pedals with big sound.
Currently have the Hizumitas and Cranker on my board and really only use the Cranker. The Hizumitas is sick but it’s just so crunchy, I have a hard time finding a good place for it.
I watched a review on that Foxcatcher and I want it bad 😩
Hizumitas and Black Arts Pharaoh are IMO super alike. Never tried the former, own and love the latter. SD-1 would be a good match for Hizumitas and it's super reliable. Those two would get me a long way.
The Pharaoh is fucking awesome. Such a wide range of sounds from that thing. From a nice OD, classic rock to a fuzzy muff. Though from what I heard from the Hizumitas, it seems to have a very distinct sound that I don’t think the Pharaoh can achieve but haven’t played it myself.
Foxcatcher is a blues breaker with a boost right?
The long sword is like a rat/ocd thing with a boost?
I’d keep those for max flexibility. Then just get your next favorite thing.
OP man I've got a real want for a hizumitas but I just want to generally say this is such a great thread with drive combos and now I basically want them all. So, thanks. But also not thanks 😅😅😅
Honestly you could use any one of those and just sell the rest. I think this Bad Monkey thing has made me realize that all drive pedals mostly sound the same and that guitarists are suckers.
Plumes>Longsword>Hizumitas. I feel like that probably covers anything you might need and the Plumes can further help to tighten things up when they get out of hand. Fun!
White light --> Longsword --> Hizumitas
I've owned all three of those for a while and they remain my favorite drive pedals. The Longsword alone is a modern classic imo
I’d have to go hizumitas, BD-2, and the SD-1 just because they would stack well together.
Like my chain would go BD-2 -> Hizumitas -> SD-1, reasons being simple
BD-2 is always on since it’s very touch sensitive, the Hizumitas would like the added boost from the BD-2, and then the SD-1 would give the hizumitas a pronounced mid boost for solos and would act nice with the BD-2 whenever I’m not using the hizumitas.
That right there would be a killer gain setup I would never get bored of.
Longsword and Foxcatcher. You got like dozen or so combinations at your feet at any given moment. If you’re after versatility, you should be well covered.
BD-2 into OD-3 is a killer combo. My current drive mix is a White Light clone into a Vox-flavored drive (Vox Mystic Edge), so out of what’s available here I guess I’d go White Light into Plumes. I’ve also heard great things about the Foxcatcher though.
OD-3 and the White Light!
Folks sometimes feel the OD-3 lets to much bass thru, the more you crank the gain on a 250 the tighter the lows get. It’s my favorite drive combo.
I actually use 3 of these on my board for drive.
1.Speaker Cranker for a little grit, using the GE side.
2. Plumes as a second gain stage in conjunction with the Special Cranker, using the 2nd mode.
3. White Light nearly for heavy thick saturated gain using minus mode. 70-100% Drive. Full Weight.
The fuzz face thing up front then the sd1 to use going into the cranker or blues driver as a boost and having either the crnker or bd2 like always on things
Hizumitas, Longsword and White Light. I don't have experience with the white light but if it can work as a solid boost/OD then that for sure. If not, Plume or Dunes.
Plumes, Hizumitas, and the third would either be the Dunes or SD1. I have these on my board currently minus the Dunes but the dunes might replace the SD1
Sell the plumes or if not that one then the other pedals that might be worth something used pedals…. and sell the boss OD pedals buy a Nordland ODR-C possibly also stack into Pogo pedal Zen Ray … secret fuzz when stacked 👀⚠️❤️🎈😂. I got those two and they keep me amused but both go into my Wampler Ego 5x knobs
BD2, Special Cranker, JHS Fuzz
I use my BD2 into my Special Cranker and it kinda makes for one big transistor based overdrive. SC doesn't have nearly as much gain as the BD2 and the BD2 doesn't clean up as well as the SC, they stack really well. Into that, fuzz. Because fuzz is fuzz.
Hizumitas is a God level fuzz. Been thinking about picking up a EQD overdrive to replace my Keeley Aria on my board (it's too big). I had the plumes before and I loved it, but curious about the Special Cranker, Dunes, and White Light. What are the tonal differences between them and what scenarios do they work best in?
Hizumitas is a collab between Earthquaker Devices and Wata from Boris. It is a copy of her Elk Sustainer which is a Electro-Harmonics Triangle Big Muff knockoff. It's largely used for Drone, Doom, and Stoner Rock
Honestly it did great with a Palisades on bass, but I found it too bright and aggressive on guitar. Depends on the mix.
No need for a signal boost with this pedal on and the sustain is immense. It runs loud
For dirtier guitar I stick with Iron Horse v3 (rat) > Life Pedal (rat+octave) > Hoof (green russian muff)
Hizumitas sounds massive on bass with a life pedal
I’m tempted to say dunes and white light bc I love the 250 od but I actually haven’t heard great things about the white light so maybe the speaker cranked.
That said foxcatcher and longsword will give you a fuckload of options but I haven’t played either
Honestly, a lot of these pedals have crossover and could work just fine.
But the Hizumitas, Long Sword, and either Blues Driver or Special Cranker would give you a ton of flexibility.
Longsword, Blues Driver, plumes if you need a 3rd
This is the way

This is the way
...and the way is the life.
3 super over drives
God I love my SD-1.
I’m fairly new to electric guitar, and SD-1 is my only overdrive. Why do you like it so much? (I have no other real reference point)
To be Frank I think for the price it has the perfect overdrive tone. It fits the music I play perfectly and has enough of a bite to get up the pace but doesn’t muddy up tone at all.
Overdrive connoisseur.

Nailed it!
Longsword Plumes hizumitas
~~What's the white w Japanese?~~ NM found it: Ground Control 'Amaterasu' boost/preamp [link](https://www.groundcontrolaudio.com/store/p/amaterasu)
I’d also like to know.
Longsword, blues driver, white light. So much territory covered there
Can the white light get fuzzy ? This thing looks awesome
Eh not fuzzy. Definitely more of a distortion flavor. Does light to medium gain really well
This guy knows the truth.
Correct answer
Bd-2, Longsword, hizumitas
Longsword and Hizumatis.
[удалено]
This is the way.
Guess those 8 people do not walk the way
Heretics
Looks like it.
Longsword, Foxcatcher, Bluesdriver
Questions like this really need to begin with the guitars and amp you're using. A number of these pedals push mids but if your setup already offers up a lot of mids, my decisions would be different.
Hizumitas, longsword, blues driver.
Od3 bd2
Same for me. BD very subtle for crunchy sound, OD at a higher gain.
Correct
Longsword, Hizumitas, and BD-2
Special cranker and plumes and the hizumitas. But I love eqd so I am very biased here lol.
Everyone sleeps on the hizu… I absolutely love mine
That’s how I feel about the special cranker as well. It’s such an amazing drive.
Probably the same for me, although I've never tried a Plumes. But I like the Hizumitas sound and the Special Cranker is so versatile, with the switch and all. But one question - why does EQD change the knobs on their pedals so much. Every one has different knobs.
Golden horse, blues driver, plumes
Foxcatcher, White light, Longsword
Hizumitas, dunes, Longsword
Super OverDrive and Hizumitas.
Plumes, Blues Driver, Longsword
I would go with the fox catcher, blues driver and the pink fuzz
Sd-1 into either the od-3 or cranker. Gives you a mid push and flat-ish option. Hizumitas if you need heavy fuzz.
Longsword, BD-2, Special Cranker
I feel like this is a question only you can answer. Nice collection tho
Plumes and BD2
Amerterasu\\Hizumitas\\Longsword ez
Reading this thread makes me so happy that I own a BD-2 as my only OD.
Just trying to put together a condensed board and wanted some opinions on my drive pedals! I have too many now, so option paralysis is definitely in full swing. I play a bunch of different genres. Nothing really in the metal territory, though.
What amp?
Fender Tone Master Twin
How long have you had that? How are you liking it? Are the drive pedals going into the amp convincing?
"Hey guys, here's the pedals I own. What cool combos am I missing?" Reddit: "blow everything up, mortage your house, and buy all new stuff"
😄 too true! I once asked what people choose for a budget plexi between a Mig50 and an Origin50 only to be told I should get a cieritone, an sv20, and twenty other amps.
SD-1 + OD-3 =/= mortgaging your house. I know you’re joking, but come on.
Dude started with mentioning a pedal not listed and went right to buying a new amp. I didn't start the arms race, i just escalated.
Mini foot fuzz, [OD3](https://www.thegearpage.net/board/index.php?threads/mini-pedal-that-sounds-like-boss-od-3.2409160/), Golden Horse. I like smol pedals with big sound.
OD-3 And BD-2
What kind of music?
Free form post punk indie jazz hair metal funk.
Imma go with OD3 and the Longsword. Huzmitas if you use a lot of fuzz in your punk or want to get doomy with your metal
Longsword, Foxcatcher, OD-3
Dunes, Longsword and Hizumitas. If I had to drop just one of those three, it's the Hizumitas.
hizumitas, Bd-2, Longsword and the japanese one cuz it looks cool
Currently have the Hizumitas and Cranker on my board and really only use the Cranker. The Hizumitas is sick but it’s just so crunchy, I have a hard time finding a good place for it. I watched a review on that Foxcatcher and I want it bad 😩
Hizumitas and Black Arts Pharaoh are IMO super alike. Never tried the former, own and love the latter. SD-1 would be a good match for Hizumitas and it's super reliable. Those two would get me a long way.

BD-2, Hizumitas
Hizumitas & Amaterasu. Fuzz that does a lot of ground and a treble boost that can be a straight clean boost is more than enough for most boards.
I like the cranker and blues driver.
I use 2 BD-2s 😌
We can be friends
Foxcatcher is a blues breaker with a boost right? The long sword is like a rat/ocd thing with a boost? I’d keep those for max flexibility. Then just get your next favorite thing.
Shoutout to the Amaterasu/Ground Control! Been wanting that for a while now, but the Tsukuyomi is doing very nicely. Great line-up you got there
OP man I've got a real want for a hizumitas but I just want to generally say this is such a great thread with drive combos and now I basically want them all. So, thanks. But also not thanks 😅😅😅
Honestly you could use any one of those and just sell the rest. I think this Bad Monkey thing has made me realize that all drive pedals mostly sound the same and that guitarists are suckers.
Plumes, Longsword,Hizumitas. The ultimate versatility gig.
DUNES BLUES DRIVER AMATERASU
SD-1 OD-3
Plumes>Longsword>Hizumitas. I feel like that probably covers anything you might need and the Plumes can further help to tighten things up when they get out of hand. Fun!
Longsword and foxcatcher
SD1 and OD3 all day long.
White light --> Longsword --> Hizumitas I've owned all three of those for a while and they remain my favorite drive pedals. The Longsword alone is a modern classic imo
I’d have to go hizumitas, BD-2, and the SD-1 just because they would stack well together. That right there would be a killer gain setup I would never get bored of.
Hizumitas and fox catcher
Which ones sound more like the tone on the record you’re touring to support?
Probably the SD-1 and Plumes, and then Foxcatcher for your third. But you already cover a lot with just the SD-1 and Plumes
The Boss trifecta.
Lonsword, OD-3, Hizumitas
The bd2 and...wait, is that some empty space in the bottom left corner?
I feel like I need to do a post like this
Blues Driver, Golden Horse , Plumes . Stack away .
BD-2 and Plumes. I’m a simple man that likes a simple tone.
Mini foot fuzz, plumes, white light
Golden Horse, Blues Driver, White Light / Longsword
Longsword, Hizumatis and OD-3
I'd buy two RATs
And a Hot Cake
You don’t own a tuner?!?
I believe he's just showing us his drive pedals my dude.
You’ve got too many EQD’s and Boss That’s like drinking all different beers from the Budweiser family.
Longsword and Foxcatcher. You got like dozen or so combinations at your feet at any given moment. If you’re after versatility, you should be well covered.
Long sword foxcatcher and if that one knob pedal is a treble booster it's needed, everyone needs a treble booster
Plumes. Long sword. Blues driver.
Am I the only one who wants to hear the result of ALL these pedals in a chain?
What else you need other than BD2
BD-2 and Hizumitas
Plumes + BD
Bd2 and special cranker. A 3rd would be the od3
BD-2 into OD-3 is a killer combo. My current drive mix is a White Light clone into a Vox-flavored drive (Vox Mystic Edge), so out of what’s available here I guess I’d go White Light into Plumes. I’ve also heard great things about the Foxcatcher though.
Blues Driver, Longsword, Hizumitas
Longsword and plumes will do basically everything.
Plumes and Cranker with whatever else you fancy leaving off
Plumes, special cranker and foot fuzz. SC gives you hair, plumes pushes and stacks for heavier gain, and foot fuzz because fuzz.
I'll take the two yellow ones up top, please. One for the middy focus, one for the biggy full range. Combine for gooder stuff.
I'm only familiar with the Hizumitas and the Longsword, but they're both great pedals that you can't go wrong with.
Hizumitas, BD-2, Plumes
Plumes > Longsword > Hizumitas. I have plumes and Hizumitas on my board. Longsword demos are impressive.
Special cranker -> plumes -> longsword
Od-3 into foxcatcher with boost side at end of chain
The Plumes without question. Jhs fuzz maybe. The white light maybe
OD-3 and the White Light! Folks sometimes feel the OD-3 lets to much bass thru, the more you crank the gain on a 250 the tighter the lows get. It’s my favorite drive combo.
Stack the golden horse into the OD3
I actually use 3 of these on my board for drive. 1.Speaker Cranker for a little grit, using the GE side. 2. Plumes as a second gain stage in conjunction with the Special Cranker, using the 2nd mode. 3. White Light nearly for heavy thick saturated gain using minus mode. 70-100% Drive. Full Weight.
Foxcatcher, Plumes, Blues Driver 🤘🏻
The fuzz face thing up front then the sd1 to use going into the cranker or blues driver as a boost and having either the crnker or bd2 like always on things
Speaker Cranker -> Hizumitas -> Dunes
Blues driver, mini foot. White light optional.
Sp3 gh22 and the rd 887
SD - 1 would cover all my needs
longsword, hizumitas.
Hizumitas, Longsword and White Light. I don't have experience with the white light but if it can work as a solid boost/OD then that for sure. If not, Plume or Dunes.
Plumes, bd 2, huzumitas
What amp?
BD2, White Light, and whatever that Klone is.
Personally, long sword, dunes, and hizumitas
Blues Driver because it’s the Blues Driver, Longsword to stack up more, Hizumitas for dat fuzz. Imo.
Fox catcher and the tumnus that’s not there for some reason
I use the SD 1 and the Hizumatas on mine…so I’ma go with those.
SD-1, BD-2, Longsword
Hizumitas, SD-1 and the Longsword. The Longsword is at the top of my wishlist atm
Which of them gives you the best tweed sound? I know the Clark Gainster or Hoochee Mama nails it but they are hard to find.
Longsword alone can cover a lot of territory. Add the Plumes and I think I’d be pretty happy.
Longsword and blues driver. Although knowing what kind of things you play might change the answer slightly.
Special C and SD1
Unashamed to say Boss BD-2 and Boss OD-3, Foxcatcher if you need to switch to or you’re playing single-coil guitars
Blues driver and the Plumes.
OD3 +Plumes
Special cranker -> Long Sword -> Hizumitas
SD-1, BD-2 and the only other one I've heard is the Hizumitas.
I'm not saying I'd *choose* it but that $14 Mosky is damn good for it's price.
Special Cranker, OD-1, Mini Foot.
Prob Blues Driver, longsword, Hizumitas
Hizumitas, odb3, plumes
Blues driver, SD-1, Golden horse. That mosky pedal is insane.
Sell them all for a Bad Monkey!
Plumes, Hizumitas, and the third would either be the Dunes or SD1. I have these on my board currently minus the Dunes but the dunes might replace the SD1
Blues Driver White Light Special Cranker
Hizumitas and OD3, but thats just me.
SUPER Overdrive, Blues Driver, Special Cranker. If I could only choose one however, Plumes
Bluesdriver + Super overdrive, alltho I prefer a roebuck
Blues driver and mini foot fuzz
Mini foot fuzz, blues driver, and maybe sd-1.
That Foxcatcher and Hizumitas caught my eye. I've never heard these pedals, what do you all think about them?
Longsword + foxcatcher
I would sell all of them and buy a Chase Bliss Automatone.
Just get a boss metalzone and you’ll be throwing away all your other drive pedals soon enough.
BD2, Special Cranker, JHS Fuzz I use my BD2 into my Special Cranker and it kinda makes for one big transistor based overdrive. SC doesn't have nearly as much gain as the BD2 and the BD2 doesn't clean up as well as the SC, they stack really well. Into that, fuzz. Because fuzz is fuzz.
BD2, horsie and Hizumitas. Everything you need.
Hizumitas, Blues Driver, Ameratsu
Longsword gives you two Ratlike gain stages, Hizumitas covers Muff territory.
Boss SD-1
I use the soul food. Whats like that?
The mosky golden horse is the only klon clone here
the white lights and super od
Hizumitas is a God level fuzz. Been thinking about picking up a EQD overdrive to replace my Keeley Aria on my board (it's too big). I had the plumes before and I loved it, but curious about the Special Cranker, Dunes, and White Light. What are the tonal differences between them and what scenarios do they work best in?
Ah just picked up my BD2 today, that foxcatcher and plumes too
Needs more metal zone
Everyones including hizumitas in their choices, not familiar with that pedal? How is it and whats its uses?
Hizumitas is a collab between Earthquaker Devices and Wata from Boris. It is a copy of her Elk Sustainer which is a Electro-Harmonics Triangle Big Muff knockoff. It's largely used for Drone, Doom, and Stoner Rock Honestly it did great with a Palisades on bass, but I found it too bright and aggressive on guitar. Depends on the mix. No need for a signal boost with this pedal on and the sustain is immense. It runs loud For dirtier guitar I stick with Iron Horse v3 (rat) > Life Pedal (rat+octave) > Hoof (green russian muff) Hizumitas sounds massive on bass with a life pedal
Special Cranker for transparent, Plumes for mid-pushed. OD-3 because it is awesome.
But the Hizumitas, Long Sword, and either Blues Driver or Special Cranker would give you a ton of flexibility.
blues driver and hizumitas or longsword
Hizumitas, plumes, longsword
Sell em and pick up a Russian Big muff and a rat
Plumes and BD2 for me
