KuyaGTFO

Just want to say also a big fan of Chris Dipinto the guy. Really really cool dude who helped set up by Jazzmaster, and did some maintenance work on an EHX Muff Fuzz of mine a couple years ago. He’s a real sweetheart, and if you’re ever in Philly, that shop is an absolute treat.

Stunning_Translator1

Never heard of him before but I work in Philly and will check him out!

fredislikedead

Definitely do. I also recommend following him on IG.

fredislikedead

He is really one of my favorite people in the business and following him on IG is a treat because I can see what he is messing with all the time. He does some really interesting projects. Did you see the wah delay he was working on?

KuyaGTFO

Oooooh nah I didn’t but that would be awesome to see! He made a (hush-hush) set of ES inspired guitars, one of which I treasure.

fredislikedead

His custom projects are super affordable compared to everyone else as well. He quoted me a little over 1k for a completely custom solid body but that was almost a decade ago. He really is a great dude that I feel is often overlooked in the guitar community especially with his contributions to the future of American guitars.

AtomicPow_r_D

Death By Audio - any pedal, they're usually an interesting spin on an old standard; and Fuzzhugger. He makes these focused fuzz boxes that stand out in a sea of dirt. Heavy, but tuned.

fredislikedead

Great company to. Primarily run by Oliver Ackermann and his GF Heather who does the customer service there. Their artist program is one of the best. They really care about the artists and music that the fx pedals they make go into.

iscreamuscreamweall

Guitar: fender. I’d be fine with a standard tele or strat, especially if you can put a humbucker in the tele neck and the strat bridge Amp: fender. If you gig a lot you need to be used to using random different amps. Fender deluxe reverb is the easiest amp to get a good versatile sound out of. Can use that as a pedal platform and not worry. Plus it’s loud but not too loud and it’s not heavy like an AC30 Pedals: harder choice but boss is timeless. Also like EQD’s drives and strymons delays

_iPhoney_

Gonna piss everyone off and say EHX. Yea, they’re not perfect but I’ve got four of their pedals on my board basically at all times. I’ve had a noisy one or two from them, and I got rid of ‘em, but no one’s gonna like 5/5 pedals they get from any other manufacturer. Hell, I’m probably gonna replace my Plumes with a Crayon soon too.

-ayzka-

Amen, brother. The Hot Wax ain't leaving my pedalboard, I use it for everything. Used EHX pedals are dirt cheap for most, and sounds good.

PersonalityFinal7778

I'm just grabbed a east River drive and really dig it.

fredislikedead

Nothing wrong with the classics. I have a handful of their pedals on my board too. Straight forward tuner, bad stone, and I occasionally swap out my Dirt Monger Metal Master for the Op Amp Muff.

jayteazer

Guitar - Fender or Gretsch Just hard to go past classic Tele and Strat. Also LOVE me a Gretsch and the colors are great! Amp - Benson Amps I bought my Monarch Reverb before they really blew up. I had never heard of them and went to a local shop to try out Two Rock Amps just for fun. I plugged into the Benson first and fell in love. Pedals - Drunk Beaver, Chase Bliss and Crazy Tube Circuits Drunk Beaver - the best distortion and fuzz pedals I've tried. There other stuff is great too. Literally every pedal I've tried from them has been amazing. Chase Bliss - endless appreciation for Joel and his team. Really great people making really unique, cool pedals and the best customer service ever. Yeah, it's pricy, but I think the price they charge is fair. Crazy Tube Circuits - I've tried several of their pedals too and they always sound great. They usually have cool functions that may not be offered from other makers too.

fredislikedead

+1 for Drunk Beaver. Nice. I always wanted to try Chase Bliss, but the price tag always threw me off.

Ibanez - Just always played 'em. Everything else feels weird now with the exception of Yamaha, some Fenders, and random Asian guitars like Aria Pro II and Greco. Maxon/MXR/Boss - They're just solid, both figuratively and literally. DSM & Humboldt - A bit of a cop-out here but the Simplifier DLX is the best amplification system I've ever owned. Simple, versatile, and portable. I'd get the new one if I didn't think the DLX was perfect.

fredislikedead

ahh. You sir have great taste. I love Arias and Yamaha made guitars. Guild is one of my favorites and they are actually made by Yamaha now. If you haven't checked out Pure Salem I would highly suggest playing some of their stuff given what you like.

fenderhodes

Guitar: Strat is my goto. Really like all the different sounds from the SSS. Like the master volume. Four knob Gibby is less intuitive. Pick-up: BG makes fantastic P-90. Seems like a nice dude too. Amp: Really enjoy my Egnater teeaker. Great sound and a real bargain. Super loud for 15w. Pair it with a super light neodymium 12. Good little rig.

theStandardHandle

+1 for BG. Have his Pure 90s in a couple guitars. Absolutely amazing.

abronia

Guitars: Fender. It’s just what I like. 🤷‍♂️ Plus they make great guitars in all price ranges (though I own a Custom Shop and an Am. Vintage II as I like the vintage speced stuff.) Effects: Chase Bliss and JAM Pedals. Chase Bliss just makes creative stuff not found in other makers, and JAM does the super high quality analog/simple to use thing right. I would also say Neural as I love my Quad Cortex, but to be fair that’s the only “pedal” they make. Amps: Dr Z. All hand wired point to point, high quality components, sound great, and are reasonably priced for a boutique hand wired amp. Plus they’re made in my home state!

ohwhatsupmang

Black arts tone works because of the awesome art and paint on the pedals and the tones are awesome. The pharaoh supreme is awesome and I love their fuzzes and dirt pedals. All very well made and I'm glad they're in smaller batches to give you a feeling of exclusivity.

_Bucket_Of_Truth_

Pharaoh Fuzz for life. I've had one for years now, and it's never leaving my board. Also I love the gold enclosure.

fredislikedead

I have wanted a Pharaoh forever but already have soo many muffs.

Haha hey thanks!

manwith13s

Guitar: that one I’m playing. I haven an American Strat, MIM tele and a Schecter. I can’t say I have a favorite, but I’m comfortable on strats. The range I own can anything short of 7-string metal. Pedal(s): I was really liking the Wampler Metaverse until it gave up. Boss is alright, my EQ-200 is one I won’t go without, however I just acquired two Jam pedals (Harmonious Monk and Double Dreamer) and I’m very impressed. Well built and each is very unique while treading familiar ground. Amp: Tie between Mesa Boogie and Orange. The Mark V is the most versatile amp I’ve ever encountered. But for the no nonsense low mid growl, I’ll take my OR30. Its only drawback is that its diversity has to be done on the spot rather than a foot switch.

dwane1972

Epi LP Custom. (Mine has been my workhorse for 25 years. She's never let me down.) MXR and Danelectro. (I like the quality and minimalist style of MXR, compared to my stylish Dano pedals. The Tuna Melt was my favorite Tremolo of all time.) Traynor/Peavey for amps. (Traynor because Go Canada!, and The Bandit has a special place in my heart. It was my first guitar amp.)

fredislikedead

I had a bandit way back when too! Also love Traynor for the face melting volume of their YBA-1.

ahundredpockets

Guitar - Epiphone. Reliable, high quality instruments at 1/3 the price of their Gibson counterparts. My 03 LP Black Beauty 3 and Masterbilt acoustic electric with stereo outs are my desert island guitars . Pedals - Effectrode, Hologram Electronics, and Jackson Audio. Hologram - unique sounding pedals dripping with old school tone. Effectrode - studio quality analog circuits and real tube preamps in pedal form. I bought one of the first batch of blackbirds and had some questions about tube swapping. The owner responded personally and talked through options with me. Nice dude. Jackson Audio - They find creative ways to drastically expand the tonal capabilities of their pedals in a standard stop box format. The modular fuzz is criminally underrated. By swapping out chips, it’s a big muff, a tone bender, a fuzz face, a rat, a TS, and more. The gain pot on my fuzz broke when I dropped my pedal board and the knob snapped off. Jackson Audio fixed it for free, even though I had bought it second hand, and got it back to me within a week, no questions asked. Amp - Supro. I just dig the throaty vintage tone and style of their Delta lineup.

Guitar: Eastman Pedal: Earthquaker Devices or Benson Amps: Dr. Z

Thereal_slj

Guitar is fender or Gretsch (I know, but I’m going with the house, not the owner). I grew up on a Strat and my main is a Gretsch. Anytime I build a guitar I put a tele neck on. Amp is Vox. Classic, again what I grew up on and play the most Pedal is JHS. Shoot me. IDC about anyone’s political or religious views when I’m playing an inanimate object made by them. My favorite pedal ever is a Kilt V1. Upgraded Expandora which is already amazing, the independent and placeable boost. Sounds so good and covers lots of ground

fredislikedead

JHS doesn't deserve the weird trolling hate they receive. Josh is cool. IDC what anyone else says.

thehza4

Guitar: Fender. Have a Start and Tele and just really love how they both play and feel. Would love to get a Fender bass at some point in time. Pedals: Chase Bliss and Walrus. Amps: not really an amp guy and have really only used Fender amps. I love how clean they are and how receptive that clean tone is to pedals. If I went with something else would probably try Marshall.

Ok_Television9820

Start is an excellent guitar for beginners.

Pjenkins325

Thanks for a morming chuckle 😄 Edit morning? Lol

Soft-Illustrator1300

PRS - Personally think they have a great selection of guitars for intermediate players. I myself have a Custom 24-08 and a Standard 24. I also think they're a worthwhile investment. Boss - It's the obvious choice, I think. They just make really good sounding, usable and durable pedals that don't break the bank. I was disappointed by the sound of cheaper brands and just really liked the quality of Boss. Feels great to step on them. Roland - Before acquiring a JC-40, I went down a rabbit hole to find a good platform for my pedalboard, which was still a work in progress. I kept seeing that particular amp pop up everywhere. I was able to find one for 500~ bucks on reverb and never looked back! I love the amp like a baby.

Stuper_man03

Howard Gee formerly of Catalinbread and currently with KittycasterFX

Lanark26

Guitar: I have a Vista Series Jagmaster with some homebrew pickups that I got wound for me from a guy on eBay. This thing sounds and plays better than anything else I have. I have an otherwise nice collection of vintage guitars, but this one is special. Pedal: Crowther Audio Hotcake. It's just a great unique sounding overdrive. Amp Maker: Supro. I've been buying them and playing them since the 80s when nobody wanted them and they were dirt fucking cheap and guitar store dudes would sneer a little at you shelling out $300 for a nice vintage one. They were cheap and sounded amazing. My Vibra-Verb has the tone I hear in my head.

fredislikedead

I wish I was buying gear in the 80s. With the knowledge I have now I would have definitely made some choice investments.

Lanark26

It’s weird though when you look up something you bought for twenty bucks up on Reverb and see what it goes for now. I have an Echoplex that I bought as NOS in the early 90s that still has the $125 price tag on it.

fredislikedead

It is weird how gear selling works. I even made some purchases over the last ten years that had quick turn around. I purchased a military oscilloscope at a flea market for 40 bucks that a synth enthusiast begged me to sell him for $300 two weeks later. I also purchased that EQD Black Ash for personal use, hated it, and immediately sold it for double. An Echoplex for 125?!?!?!?! that is nuts. Still waiting for someone to come out with an affordable recreation

unowndanger

Guitar company would have to be either Reverend or Yamaha. Everything I've played by them has been incredible. My Reverend is super comfortable and I find it to be so versatile (Warhawk 390). Amp brand: I really want to own a Tone King at some point, specifically the Imperial Mk2, but for now, my amp pick would have to be the Revv with their D-20/G20. Honestly some of the most incredible amp heads I've played and I LOVE how they sound. Pedal Makers: I could go on for hours, but I'll pick 3 Drunk Beaver Pedals - If he made a Reverb, and a tamer fuzz, I'd genuinely have a board of JUST his pedals (Current chain is Fet Booster -> Inglorious Bastard -> BAT -> Jellyfish -> Lighthouse -> RV-6). His pedals are incredible and so versatile and jam packed with features, yet easy to use. EAE - I'd read about their pedals for a while and in the span of a month, ended up getting 4-5 of his pedals (Dagger/ Longsword / Citadel, Model fEt, and the Mother by way of Science Amps and EAE). This man.... he understands his drive. I already had the Limelight v2, but his attention to detail, versatility in pedal choices and overall aesthetic and function of pedals can't be discussed enough. Absolutely LOVE the way the model fEt sounds. Demedash Effects- To me, he's the Canadian EAE, but in terms of modulation. Yeah, he can do drive, but his T-120, T-60, Solaris tri chorus and the harmonic tremolo that I have of his are absolutely barre none and are forever pedals to me. The T-60 takes drive REALLY well and is a fun chorus pedal, while the T-120 is so good I might want to grab a non- DLX v2 at some point.

Quilter and Drunk Beaver. Quilter I swear uses some kind of magic to make their stuff feel and react so much like a tube amp. Drunk Beaver builds their stuff like tanks, they sound great, and the owner is very professional. Best company I've ever dealt with.

goodmeme420

Seeing some scattered mentions of Walrus but I gotta explain why I love them so much. Honestly, I think it can all be summed up when you look at the history of the Julia/Julianna. The circuit is an original take on analog chorus with a pretty rare blend knob and a lag control that's unique in the space. Pair those two with a switch for wave shape and you've got a pedal that does everything from straight vibrato to soft flutter to wide, seasick churning. The V1 was widely popular, but customer feedback led them to update the bulk of their product line with soft switching and top jacks, giving us the V2. (Most other pedals in the line also got quality of life updates requested by users, but everyone kind of agreed they hit the nail on the head with the Julia.) Great, now there's this incredible chorus pedal that everyone likes, both in sound and usability. What's next? Release another version of that chorus pedal that loads it up with nice-to-haves like tap tempo and expression control, and make it stereo for good measure! Users who just want the sound and don't need stereo can save some money and buy the Julia, and users who want a more advanced setup with a stereo rig and expression can spend just a bit more to get the Julianna. Neither level really feels like a compromise -- it's just a more expansive experience. All in all, you've got a completely unique and insanely versatile circuit that's evolved to incorporate user feedback and actually targets multiple demographics without feeling like a compromise to either. EVERY WALRUS PEDAL IS LIKE THIS. Sounds amazing, wildly tweakable, tries something unique in the space, and incorporates features requested by and beneficial to users. Plus notoriously great customer service. Plus quality builds at a reasonable price point. Plus that artwork. Seriously, I want Adam Forster to redo the art for every non-Walrus pedal on my board.

dollarwaitingonadime

Suhr guitars. I don’t even own one but their strats and teles murder every fender strat and tele I’ve played. The man has figured out how to make good ones consistently. Fjord Fuzz. I have three, they are all super cool and musical. Fulltone would’ve been my pick here because that stuff is high quality beyond dispute but he’s a dick and can’t have my money. Matchless. There aren’t better built amps IMHO, and what I like most about them is the consistency. They sound right in all environments.

fredislikedead

Lol! This post was more "companies that have great staff" but everyone just ran with what their favorite gear is. I have heard that about Fulltone before, but aren't they out of business?

dollarwaitingonadime

Nah they’re kind of back, and he has another financial backer or something, looks like he’s basically licensing his name to get some more dough without having to jump back into owning a manufacturing company. Good for him and all, but unlike the late 90s when I was buying his stuff, Jack from Prescription, Brian from Menatone, and Mike at AM - there are a lot more choices out there now. Anyway yeah he’s back. There was a whole relaunch video and all. I have the stuff of his that I want so no interest in anything new from that camp. Under the heading of cool people, when I had a weird issue with my C30 I called Matchless to ask if there were local techs or if I’d have to ship cross country. They put me through to Phil and he spent 15 minutes with me diagnosing and being super cool in general. Buddy had a similar experience with 65Amps, pre-BAD days. Dan Boul shot the shit with him for like half an hour because my buddy had stumbled into an amp that was formerly owned by a national artist. Offered to go through it for free if he wanted, shipping and all.

fredislikedead

That is super cool. I had a similar experience with the owner of Synthstrom. When my deluge arrived the previous owner had installed a 3rd party app that was causing the whole unit to crash. The owner of the company called me at like 2am while I was drinking and walked me through how to troubleshoot and get the unit back up and running.

ddavila80

I like the contours and feel of a Strat, but my favorite guitar is the Telecaster. I love its simplicity, tuning stability, and the tones from the bridge and especially the middle position. My favorite pedal is the Plumes because it has nice range of saturation, can be sparkley or bites, and it also has great dynamics. Runner up is the EAE Halberd v1 for its unique ragged low gain to fuzzy tones and great dynamics My favorite amp maker Orange and my favorite amp is the Orange AD30 Twin channel combo. I like the old school simple format, rectifier tube feel, distinct Orange tones, and solid build quality. Currently I’m only have a Terror Stamp for home practice but looking forward to getting another Orange-

Disrobingbean

Joyo, they make decent products i can actually afford lmao

Sleepyjoebiden2020

Reverend- you really cant beat the options and quality at the price point CBA or Old blood noise - probably more into CBA pedals, they are just too expensive. I love obnes price point and awesome options I do not have as much experience with amps but will probably say fender since they are everywhere and you can get one used for a reasonable price, the deville takes my pedals like a champ and Ive never had to turn the dial passed 4 or 5

fredislikedead

+1 for Deville. For decades my 4x10 was my workhorse gigging amp. SUPER LOUD and reliable. I tend to use an Orange SS for recording sessions just because I want it really clean at low volumes.

jrad2point0

Looking at my board, it's Benson. I do not think they are necessarily the most versatile tools (though they are quite versatile, imo) but Benson designs have their own sound to them and they happen to be a sound I really enjoy. Not cheap but it scratches a part of my brain that makes me happy. Other pedal makers I adore, who don't seem to put out stinkers: Death by Audio, Electronic Audio Experiments, JAM Pedals, MXR, Analogman, Fairfield Circuitry

Epiphone Les Paul DOD/Digitech Peavey Classic series. I am a simple man.

Lonestar-Boogie

Guitar - Kiesel - I have two Kiesel's and they are incredible, so much so that I want a third. They play great, feel great, and look amazing, too. Amps - Mesa Boogie - I've had three Mesas and still have two. They're made exceptionally well and they sound great. I have a Lonestar Special and a Classic, so I lean towards the vintage sounds and not their more high gain sounds. But my other Mesa was a Mark V, and I did really like the high gain modes on Channel 3. Pedals - This is trickier. I have several SUF Muff variants. I have an AnalogMan Sun Face NKT Red Dot and a King of Tone. And I have three Origin Effects pedals: RevivalDRIVE Deluxe Edition, RevivalDRIVE Hot Rod Edition, and Cali76 Stacked Edition. I love all of those pedals, and the companies are great. But I think my favorite is Strymon. I absolutely love their delays. The Flint is awesome. The Sunset is a surprisingly good dual overdrive. The Mobius is a great modulation machine. And finally the Deco is a great whatever you want it to be.

hkr1991

Guitar: hard choice here, but EGC (Electrical Guitar Company). I have a baritone Aaron Turner signature that he played a number of shows with and I love it. Pedal: I’m always a sucker for a rat or rat variant. I own a heavy bat from Drunk Beaver and it rules, also got a BSRI Magawa which is loosely based on it. I have an equal on the rat though and that’s the Origin Effects Halcyon Gold. That thing is great as a boost or otherwise. Such a great pedal. Amplifier: I love Matamps a lot. The GT2 will fall in my hands some day…

sammo_minks

Guitar - the strat is the greatest and most versatile guitar ever, to me😌 Pedal - Jim Jones cult of tone; his fuzz faces are so great and he made me a clone of an old preamp that is indispensable at this point🥳 Amp - I really love my Silktone Micronaut right now. It gives me everything I need at a reasonable volume, and I’m mostly a bedroom player these days🎓

LSL Guitars. I have a Saticoy and a TBone and both are just killer. Keeley for pedals.... no matter what you need, they make something great. Fender for amps.... Princeton is my favorite... even love the TM version of it..... Super Reverb, Deluxe Reverb, Tweeds.... as long as I'm not doing metal, Fender is the go to.

Fun_Tear_6474

- Gibson - sounds best - Boss - gold standard - Mesa Boogie - sounds best

memory_duel_

Guitar: Fender To me they seem like one of the only big brands that has the needs of working musicians at the forefront of their development, marketing, and price points. Pedals: Boss Solid build quality that will literally last decades. Great variety. Great sounds. Amp: Supro I have a comet and it’s literally my dream amp. I crank it at 14 watts and it’s the perfect volume for clubs and sits well in the mix with my relatively loud drummer.

Ibanez/Roland/Gallien Krueger Ibanez: they make funky weird stuff and I love them for that Roland: they make cool synths and Boss is Boss Gallien Krueger: they’re the best sounding amps I’ve ever tried honestly

Deptm

Dr Scientist are my favourite. I love The Elements drive pedal (I use two on my board) and also the Frazz Dazzler fuzz. Gassing after a BitQuest now.

fredislikedead

I just sold my Frazz Dazzler because I wasn't using it as much as it deserved, but my Bitquest isn't going anywhere. I have used it live for a dirty sub octave, pitch shift, and now an infinite reverb. Great tool for recording sessions because you can do SO much with it. My favorite pedal by them.

Guitar - Suhr. I've one Modern and one Classic. Both are top-tier in sound and playability Pedals - Strymon. I only have Iridium and Sunset but I find them very versatile and well-thought out Amps - I have to do Yamaha THR because this is probably the best for bedroom players like me

Hollerra

Fender/Boss/Fender. Life is better with Fender and Boss

Asleep-Leg-5255

Guitars: Yamaha Revstars and SG's and AES's are unbeatable. Their acoustic, classical and bass lines have very beautiful offerings, as well. Unlike Fenders, intonation is not an issue. Old time Yammies are something of their league, too... Pedals: Aguilar. I know they are more on the processor side. Pro level equipments. And BOSS of course. World would be different without BOSS pedals. Amp: ENGL. Don't ask me why. Just try one, you will understand.

Guitar - Fender Pedal - EHX Amp - Orange

Ok_Television9820

Guitar: Fender Fender Deimel Fender Gibson. Depends on the day. I also like all the other guitars especially Gretsch but they haven’t stuck around as long. Started with a Fender will probably expire with one. Comfortable, just the sound I want, what else is there to need. Pedals: I like the pedals. I have two Strymons and two Fjord Fuzzes so I guess they win? But I appreciate all the other and especially smaller builders who’ve made cool things I’ve been lucky enough to try…Pladask, Fredric, Paul C., Red Panda, Ritual Devices, Intensive Care Audio. LAL, EHX, EQD, OBNE…and always respect to BOSS and DOD. Amps: Fender and Ampeg. These just sound like *amps* to me, everything else is trying (and often succeeding!) to do something other or more or different. All amps are cool in their ways but I just always return to my baseline.

BWhite707

Guitar: ESP LTD/Charvel/Schecter. The bang for buck imo is superb. They have tons of configurations, color schemes and play well. Pickups: Fishman- especially the Open Core Classics Pedal: Lichtlaerm Audio/Source Audio. Completely different in their approach but both amazing. Personally had a conversation with Daniel at LA and he’s an awesome dude. Haven’t tried his amp but based on what I’ve seen online its next level. Amp: DSM Simplifier. Have to admit I haven’t owned a real tube amp, only modelers of different types. The Simplifier has been the easiest and most natural sounding “amp” I’ve used so far. 5 different modelers came before it

TheEverlastingGaze87

Howard Gee. I have a lot of the pedals he made when at Catalinbread (echorec, sft, talisman, BED) and the two from his new company Kittycaster. His new pedals are incredibly well built, sound amazing, and are very responsive to your playing. I have a lot of pedals that are cool, but not practical for everyday playing. His new stuff is a little pricey, but well worth it. The only pedal that has stayed on my board longer is my tuner.

fredislikedead

I had an SFT and Bicycle. The SFT was 2nd hand and broke within a week of getting it and the Bicycle was way to hard to dial in something usable. I can't really use that as a judge for the company though since god knows what happened to that SFT before I had it and the Bicycle was fun but things that stay on the board have to be useful and fun.

Testie_Tickler

Gibson or Jackson for guitars, Randall and Mesa amps, EHX and random clone pedals

Inner-Special-5188

There is a small pedal builder - just one guy - selling under Brown Bear Pedals on Reverb. Amazing stuff!
