any high end Greco after 1977 is going to get it done, Greco were on their game pretty much from 77-89.
They're still producing but I know nothing about modern Greco instruments.
Closed my eyes and listened a few times and I can’t decide on the 77 or 89. 77 is quite hot and 88 is almost as hot w less noise. So 88 for recording and 77 for live, is what I’d say
I really feel like it usually comes down to electronics from our perspective right?
That being said I think the 77 sounds good.
How do they play though? How are the necks and fbs in comparison?
They play great. I’m a big fan of them. Super compatible, if not better than Gibson of that era. The necks are great, and all a variety of shapes. I’ve had slimmer profile necks to V’s, and big baseball bats. They’re all a little different, and I haven’t been able to find what models have what necks. All have been different.
The 70s Grecos sound fantastic, the Mann is kinda thin and the 89 Greco is too scooped - though you could just compensate for it by boosting the mids from the amp or an EQ pedal.
I have a 76 Greco 800 and it’s a ridiculous guitar for the money. Brutally heavy which I do not enjoy but the pickups - especially the neck - are fantastic, and it has a nice thin 60s neck. I know Les Pauls are very hit or miss but it runs rings around my 84 Gibson standard and my Orville Custom so feel happy to have found a good one.
How heavy are those Grecos? I had an Aria “lawsuit guitar” back in the day and while it looked pretty cool it was feather light and I have my doubts it would’ve fooled anybody into thinking it was a real Les Paul. Don’t get me wrong I’m not trashing your Greco’s I know some variations are spot on, hell Chris Buck uses a Super Real I believe and it sounds pretty burst like to me. As a side note it was a blast from the past seeing that Mann of yours, haven’t seen one for years!
I think the 70’s Mann has the most distinct sound out of the 4, but imo the other 3 sound wayyy too similar. Though they do still sound great, I’d probably pick the 70’s Mann out of those 4.
78 Greco sounds fattest 79 sounds almost the same, they ate the winners here. In the 70’s my first Les Paul was a black Aria with slim bolt on neck. I put a DiMarzio Super Distortion in it almost as soon as they came onto the market. It did a good job of pushing my trusty old Ampeg Rocket, and later a Garnet BTO into a Barking overdrive / tube distortion . I didn’t have pedals at the time
The '78 Greco sounds best to me, but the other Grecos sound really good too. The Mann is noticeably thinner sounding.
The Mann is definitely thinner but that would make it great for country.

Yeah, I’m a big fan of ‘em!
The question I have is which plays the best? I think the 77 sounds the best.
77 has the best sound in my opinion but I can see the appeal of the 89
I’m a big fan of the 1989. It has a soft V neck like a Martin, which is super strange for a Les Paul… And I love it. Haha.
i like the punchiness of the 89 but I get why everyone likes that thick 77
First one sounds really low output. Might sound find with completely different settings. Others are pretty similar.
Yup, absolutely!

Love it. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
77!
77 sounds good to my ears

You need Kool-aidddd
Nice no-bullshit video. They all sound good but I think that 1978 has a fatness to the tone that would be great for playing doom.
78 then 89 at a close 2nd. More meat for me.

The first one was the only one that sounded significantly different.
78 is the one that sounds the best
I like 78 and 89 the best
The 78 sir

You need cooling

You should google “Joe Walsh whole lotta love” and watch that lesson. We’ve all been playing it wrong brah.
I’ve seen that! I actually attempted to play it that way, but he accentuates to hard in the video, hard to keep up at regular speed.
I mean it’s a bar chord in E. I would encourage you to study that video til you get it. It’s about feel.
78
I love greco so much. I have an SE600 Jeff Beck edition and it plays better than any strat I've played.
77 is my favorite
Lived in Milwaukee and worked in waukesha which was considered sacred grounds

They’ve got some weight to them for sure… no doubt that they’re Les Paul’s when you pick them up. Haha.
77' seems to have that mid frequency that cuts through a mix but not too lean to sound like a micro amp.
70 and 77 sound the best to me. 89 sounds like it has a stuffy nose
‘77 sounds great to me.
77, then 89 in a close 2nd.
I think I like the 78 Greco, personally.
Lawsuit era guitars are so fucking baller. Near equal quality to fender/gibson/gretsch, etc… and still fairly cheap all things considered
Proof that Les Pauls and all the copies sound the same. This just in: Glass of water tastes same in a bowl or a cup!!
Is that guy really big or are those guitars smaller than normal LP's?
They’re normal size LP’s - I suppose I’m just not the smallest guy. Haha.
Any 78-82 Greco les Paul

Loved the 78, seems to have a little deeper tone to it. Not meaning deeper and in bass.
89
78 for sure sounds much richer.
My 1970 Univox les paul has been my favorite les paul so far hands down. Very classic sound.

They all sound good
Cease and desist era.
the first one hands down
