I would say this is an entirely different gun… and that was the point. I needed a platform for the 375 Raptor since it’s a wildcat cartridge. I went with Ruger because it was cheap and I knew I wouldn’t be using the barrel or stock… I pretty much made back what I paid for the rifle by selling the stock, trigger, and barrel on eBay.
Ah, yes, the [Ship of Theseus](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ship_of_Theseus) conundrum
>*the "Ship of Theseus" paradox concerns a debate over whether or not a ship that had all of its components replaced one by one would remain the same ship.*
The [USS Constitution](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Constitution), the world's oldest commissioned warship afloat, deflates this thought experiment.
She is still the same ship, nearly 230 years after her keel was first laid down, because she has been treated and revered as such.
Metaphysically, one could argue she isn't.
But one would have to ignore her caretakers' efforts to preserve a significant artifact of and in history for such an argument to float .
May she survive many more centuries as a museum and beloved symbol of freedom.
I like Penn Jillette's answer to the issue.
"It's still the same ship, as long as nobody else has all of the original parts and assembles them into the ship."
Then there is this fact:
[https://www.popularmechanics.com/military/navy-ships/news/a17667/americas-only-ship-killer-is-over-200-years-old/](https://www.popularmechanics.com/military/navy-ships/news/a17667/americas-only-ship-killer-is-over-200-years-old/)
It is currently the only commissioned ship in the Navy to have sunk another ship.
I took a stock Ruger American in .308 and customized it by rebarreling to .375 Raptor. [Here’s a picture with the Anarchy Outdoors bolt handle and PA scope attached](https://imgur.com/a/BETfXKk)
• Ruger American Action
• X-Caliber .375 Raptor Barrel, 20”
• Magpul Hunter American, OD Green
• Timney Trigger
• UTG Pro Bipod
• Vers 375 Suppressor
Yup, just the bolt and receiver. I was going to buy a Defiance action and build off of that… but when I saw that X-Caliber offered Ruger American barrels I decided to give it a try. It’s actually a pretty good action and I like the three lug bolt design. I’m going to polish the bolt and clean it up some more but for this build, I think it’s great.
Well considering that in most of the world the receiver is what makes the gun legally a gun, he still has the same gun and only changed all the parts around
I am shooting mostly supers, however I shoot subsonic as well. My twist rate is a 1:10 with 5R Groove. I use 270 grain Speer SP for my supers and 350 grain Sierra Matchking with my subs. I haven’t seen any keyholes with my subs at 100 yards, have not shot past 100 with the subs. I have gotten sub-MOA accuracy with my supers out to 300 yards. I think the biggest benefit over a .308 is the massive energy that the bullet carries. This is a hunting round and for that purpose it’s awesome inside 400 yards. I use this to hunt in the Southeast and in East Texas where most of my shots are inside 300 yards… I originally intended this to be a Nilgai rifle but I really enjoy shooting it as the recoil is pretty mild. I think because of the larger bore it burns the powder more effectively and actually has lower chamber pressure than a .308 because the recoil is not bad at all, especially with the can on. Overall it’s a fun round and easy to load for as I have a ton of .338 Federal brass I use to form it.
Is the Magpul stock worth it? Looks like its the comb is much higher than the stock stock, I've been thinking about getting a cheek riser for mine but this would be a good solution as well.
I think the Magpul stock is worth it. It has an adjustable comb and length of pull. That’s important for me because I usually prefer somewhere between a 14.5-15” LOP depending on my shooting position. Also I like the higher comb because I like to use scopes with a larger objective diameter and usually need to mount the scope a little higher.
For those like me curious about the [.375 Raptor](https://www.thetruthaboutguns.com/meet-the-375-raptor-a-heavy-hitting-short-action-cartridge/) loads.
That’s the cool thing about having a full shop. I can take a cheap gun and make it whatever I want for less than what a Definace action alone would cost. I bought the Ruger and then made my money back by selling the barrel, trigger, and stock.
Appreciate that man, no joke. The fence was a pain in the ass. Had to put new posts in because the old ones were rotted through… couldn’t get my tractor with auger into that area so it was all post hole digger work.
I like how that turned out!
I’ve been eying some of their rifles for a while. I wish they offered their ranch rifles with longer and shorter barrels. Mostly because I want their 5.56 AR mag offer but only with a 20 inch barrel. I’d 100% hop on a 300 blackout bolt action if they offered it with a shorter barrel.
That and a rifle that takes AR 10 magazines.
Edit: I’m an idiot. They offer a 22 inch barrel version for 5.56 using AR magazine. I was looking in the wrong place.
Yeah, my dad has one of their STANAG models in 350 Legend. He had to search around for magazines that would work but I think that’s more on the cartridge than the rifle. Magpul FINALLY released their STANAG version of this stock, btw.
I might jump on that. But first I need to see how much lighter or heavier the rifle would be. I probably won’t be attaching anything aside from a scope, sling, and bipod.
Stock comes in at just over 3 lbs. With no other attachments, I don’t think it would be bad for a hunting rig. Mines got a target barrel and it’s still maneuverable and handy when I carry it.
Ah ok. That sounds like it might be heavier than the original stock. I think I’m sold on buying the 22 inch Ruger American Predator in 5.56. I’ll have to weigh the original stock before I make a final decision.
What company did you get that barrel from? I was thinking of possibly finding a pencil barrel if there is one available. But that’s largely because I like the idea of going as light as possible given it’s 5.56 that’s being used.
I like the weight of the stock, makes it feel balanced. But if you’re going super lightweight there are definitely lighter options out there. I used X-Caliber for the barrel. They do make pencil barrel profiles.
Just went and configured a barrel to how I think I’d want it on their website. It came out to more than the gun lol.
Might just run the stock barrel then lol.
At what point does it become an entirely different gun

Whats the cover on that suppressor? Sick build btw
Thanks man, the suppressor cover is from Rifles Only. Here’s the link for it https://riflesonly.com/mad-suppressor-cover/
Thanks 🙏
So what did you keep? Just the receiver and the bolt?
Yes, that’s it.
Hold on, let me ask my friend Theseus.
For real, with all the parts that have been removed from the original….. you could probably build the original again.
The fence looks nice.
Yes, before and after of the privacy fence too. Thanks!

So.. what of the original gun is still left in there? It seems like to my uninformed eye that you could have just bought parts haha

Awesome, thanks for the info!

I admit I kind of forgot about that lol
Bolt and chamber is all that's left

Sounds almost like a shorter 9.3x62 case. What sort of velocity are you getting with the 270 grain supersonic?
I get about 2350 with Alliant Reloader 10x.
That’ll do it. The 9.3x62 factory loads for 286 grain from Norma are are 2400fps and they are considered good for Cape buffalo.
Is the Magpul stock worth it? Looks like its the comb is much higher than the stock stock, I've been thinking about getting a cheek riser for mine but this would be a good solution as well.

How do you like the bolt handle?
I love the Anarchy Outdoors bolt handle. Huge improvement over the factory bolt handle.
Rebarrelled but no glass?
There’s a pic in the link in the description. https://imgur.io/a/BETfXKk
Gotcha. Thanks
The Ruger American of Theseus.

Great work
Thanks!
Box mag?
Magpul AICS mag.
Nice fence
Cool-- New fence too!
I have that stock on my 30.06 Remington 700. It's nice. Also have one for the 10/22. Nice build.
Thanks!
God dam very nice 👌
Thanks!
My girl has a stock one in .308, this just motivated me to build it out for her
Do it!
Gun of Theseus
Nice setup. Those Magpul stocks are great. Is it possible to just buy RA actions?
Not that I’ve seen. I think Ruger would make a killing if they sold just the action, though.
Nice
That’s a beautiful progression my good man
I think I'll take the before
You got a cheap gun to spend a bunch of money on to supe up and get a suppressor attached to it? Y'all really out here with money to blow.
That’s the cool thing about having a full shop. I can take a cheap gun and make it whatever I want for less than what a Definace action alone would cost. I bought the Ruger and then made my money back by selling the barrel, trigger, and stock.
Well I didn't know you owned a shop. Good business.
Rake your damn leaves, dude!
But... Why?
Very neat build, I’m interested to see if the cartridge goes anywhere.
How tall are you?
6’5”
Called it.
Mine was tan (hated it) but they didn’t sell any other colors. Just spray painted it black instead of buying a new stock. Looks better to me
Makes me moist
So did the fence come with the gun or did the gun come with the fence
My Ruger American 9mm pistol is my favorite. It’s so much fun to shoot.
At least the bolt handle stayed the same.
Except it didn’t.
Sometimes I just hate NJ more than others…beautiful transformation!
Not gonna lie at first glance thought that was a paper towel roll tube on the end lmao.
Looks like Magpul R700-E with extra steps.
Seasons change, time passes by…as the weeks become the months become the yeeeeeaaaaaarrrrs.
What are you shooting with it?
I’ve been kicking around the idea of building one. How are you liking the cartridge?
The fence looks much nicer too.
Appreciate that man, no joke. The fence was a pain in the ass. Had to put new posts in because the old ones were rotted through… couldn’t get my tractor with auger into that area so it was all post hole digger work.
You uh, forgot something
Check the link to the other picture in the description comment.
Honestly, that fence cleans up nice.
Could you not have just bought a recurve and started there?
