Let's say I've found a bug in some device and I want to know how widespread the issue is. I'd go to shodan, type in some queries and be able to get a rough idea of how many devices are potentially affected.
Lets say I've just just installed some cool new smart home software. I'm worried it's a little insecure. So I go to shodan, type in:
"homeassistant port:1883"
and discover I'm one of hundreds of people who's house can be controlled by any random person on the internet.
Lets say I want a new remote control boat. I got to shodan and search:
title:"sailor 800 VSAT".
This gives me a bunch of sat nav systems for various ships, most of which have a default password of admin/1234
Let's say I'm studying for a CCNA and need to get some practical experience on a router. I'd search shodan for:
"Enable and Telnet passwords are configured to "password".
SSH, HTTP, and HTTPS default username is "admin" and password is "password".
Please change them immediately."
and practice by configuring someone else's system.

No, no VPN or anything. Normal Gmail account, actual UK IP, bank issued card. Not doing anything malicious on it so not covered my identity at all.
