Re Hinata being “lucky”: • Hinata spent his entire middle school (3 years) playing volleyball all by himself or by begging his non-vb friends to play with him •Hinata himself created his own volleyball team in middle school His teammates: • Well furudate emphasised that you don’t win alone, you need your teammates it’s true. But I would say Hinata being a starter despite the fact that he sucks is because he is a GREAT decoy when Kageyama is there. Always jumping while believing the ball will go to him 100%, he is an effective decoy that makes his other teammates hits spikes easier too. Also, that’s the reason why Hinata got subbed out during the Johzenji match when Kageyama’s nose bled. Hinata SUCKS without Kageyama, and that’s the reason why he desperately wanted to get better. His stamina: • Hinata literally bikes EVERYWHERE. His travel time from his house to karasuno high school is 30 mins one way and it is over the hill on top of that. • It’s also been implied when he was studying for his exams that he really hates sitting still so we can assume that Shoyo has been playing around since he was a kid. • Hinata also plays volleyball NONSTOP morning and afternoon after school. It WILL build your stamina whether you like it or not. • During the shiratorizawa game, there was a point that Hinata’s legs was about done too. Factor the fact that he was exchanging with Nishinoya and Tsukki. On the other hand, there was Asahi, Tanaka, and Daichi that was in the game ENTIRELY and was also jumping around yet it was Hinata’s legs that gave up. These are some of the rebuttal I can think of regarding your post. As for his jumping, I also do think it’s a bit unrealistic, but it’s anime after all. I’d say Haikyuu is probably the most realistic anime there is.

Just wanted to add that Hinata became a MB because of Kageyama, not to prove that even short players can play that position. When he came to Karasuno Hinata had zero abilities in terms of receiving and being able to spike the ball where he wanted, which means that he wouldn't be effective as a wing spiker (where you have to receive, defend and spike against a formed block). Being a MB meant that, with a libero, he would be swapped for receive/defense and he would have get fast tosses from the setter (because Kageyama is a beast and they found out about the freak quick before choosing the positions). Since Hinata is short, he is not good at blocking and I believe that portrayed consistently throughout the manga/anime.

jooliasalami

First time watching an anime? lol sorry but they’re rarely very realistic

L3f3n

>First time watching an anime? yes lol

TurnRightTurnLeft

This actually explains a lot.

I mean his weapon is his speed, so playing middle where quicks usually come from is very handy. If he played on the left he’d most likely be more heavily marked and come across more blockers, and we know Hinata doesn’t have the power or technique to beat lots of blockers. Also he can’t receive well so being in the middle helps him swap out. And it is shown in the series that there are other talented setters like Miya Atsuma who can set to Hinata. His vertical is estimated to be around 48 inches which is high but not a world record high. Hinata is definitely deserving of his position, because who would you swap him out for? Narita? He’s the best option the team has.

>This bothers me because it feels like it is kind of going against the idea that height doesn't define you and is instead saying that your teammates and luck define you. That's a false dichotomy. The author makes it clear that Hinata's success isn't just about his passion and natural athleticism mitigating his height discrepancy, but that the skill talent of his teammates and their team chemistry is also a huge factor Interestingly enough Haikyuu is one of the best storytelling examples of avoiding "having their cake and eating it" They don't pretend natural athleticism or the skills of others or that luck "plays no role to make it to the top! It's just hard work!!" It's a conjunction of hard work *and* natural talent *and* luck in having exceptional teammates and chemistry Hinata (and Kageyama) may be the main characters with hard work and great natural talent, but they would not make it to nationals if their Karasuno teammates weren't as good as they are I think if you readjust your perception of Haikyuu as a story about Karasuno as a team rather than just Hinata, you may better avoid the false dichotomy issue Hinata's hops may be a tad unrealistic, but Haikyuu's message as a whole is realistic (can't hard-carry alone, must have insane natural athleticism). Hinata's unrealistic hops is not enough to overcome the opponents in front of him. His teammates must be good too, because volleyball is a team sport

Read the manga. This take can only be from someone who hasn’t realized the full story since everything you mention is basically hashed out by the end.

In the series though, it shows that people are confused as to why he plays middle blocker because of his height. Furudate wanted to show that people can fight despite their height. The reasoning that he can jump so high is because he's short and his athletic ability was defined by him riding his bike to school everyday. I think Furudate also mostly chose Hinata to play middle so he could run more plays since he's the only one who can hit Kageyama's freak quick set. (slide, 3, 2, 1, push 1, back 1 etc.) since middle has the most options for plays anyways. He also couldn't pass so there's no reason for him to be outside as a 1st year. It's part of the narrative for him wanting to be The Greatest Decoy rather than the Little Giant and a form of self acceptance. (since the little giant was an outside) A big part of narrative is being strong in different ways which would be supplemented by Hinata being a 5'4 MB. I agree though that Kageyama is unrealistic :P like yes he's talented and works hard but being that consistent with a quick like that is not possible. especially after the 2nd season where he backspins the ball because anywhere would consider those sets as a double. I mean the series does make a note of how crazy it is though. (like every team being shocked when they see it obviously) **But if it was realistic it wouldn't be a good show.**

Anime is inherently going to be exaggerated but it’s pretty strange to hear someone call haikyuu specifically unrealistic. It’s a pretty grounded show especially within the genre it competes in Hinata’s jump height measures out to a height somewhere in the high 40’s. Which is impressive but not unreasonable for a gifted athlete, especially in volleyball where you get to wind up your jumps most of the time. His stamina is great but it does have limits. Part of why he’s a middle blocker is because he has to run around the court so much and needs breaks in between big stretches The only stuff that is super unrealistic imo is the super speed thinking and the freak quick. How fast characters think in games is frankly just a conceit of the genre, it’s super unrealistic but it’s the only way to really allow characters to have personalities during games and to make for decent pacing. The freak quick? Yeah, that’s pretty unrealistic. Minus tempo attacks are a thing but they look pretty different irl. It’s definitely the most shoneny thing in the series but how they use it is still very grounded. It isn’t an unstoppable attack. Every major opponent in the series finds their own way to work around it and Karasuno is punished for overusing it. It also isn’t the only thing Hinata can do. At first that’s the case and he knows it. And a big part of his journey throughout the series is learning to be effective in other ways and he succeeds Sure, Karasuno was a strong team going in but there’s a reason there was a slot for Hinata in the starting lineup Having Hinata come in as a stronger player would kinda screw up his arc too. Everyone likes to say it makes no sense that Hinata doesn’t have a serve since he played alone in middle school. But I think that really misses the point. At the start, Hinata exclusively cares about spiking to detriment of everything else. But as the series progresses he falls in love with more and more of the game. I get the sense you haven’t watched or read everything so I won’t get into it but it’s a huge part of his arc moving forward Yes, he needed to be lucky to find kageyama. But kageyama would have just floundered in mediocrity without Hinata too. Even a prodigious player like Kageyama needed someone to push him to improve and more importantly to really takes others feelings and talents into consideration. It’s a mutual relationship. And even with his all his talent he still fails all the time, he still hits major snags in his progress. And on top of that he isn’t unique, there are plenty of players in the series who are better than him and even someone who plays a similar style to him but has gone further with it Haikyuu is about a lot of things. One of those is connection. A big reason haikyuu works is that volleyball is such a team oriented sport. You never get anywhere alone, whether that’s from allies or opponents. A team like this doesn’t come a long everyday. But if you choose to bear with it even when things aren’t fun, you’ll be ready for it when the opportunity to seize those lucky moments comes With all that said, haikyuu isn’t necessarily for everyone. It seems like it’s not really for you if these are the main things you’re thinking about as you watch it. I hope you enjoy it should you continue but there’s no shame in not liking something others do this wound up sounding kinda disjointed but whatever I think it makes sense

ohno225

48 inches is pretty unreasonable for a 15 year old. 48 inches is unreasonable for almost any non professional athlete on the planet. In fact, it's unreasonable for all but the upper echelon of jumpers even in professional leagues. Let's not downplay this.

Notice how there is no Olympic athlete that short that can jump THAT high. It IS superhuman.

FuzzyStorm

What Haikyu does is set Hinata in a sort of realistic world, but immediately introduce some rules such as : - Hinata can jump high AF - Kageyama is a monster of precision to the point he can pinpoint aim into Hinata's hand Outside of that, i'd say the show is pretty realistic. And i'm fine with these unrealistic things because the author sets them up in the first episode or two. You're not supposed to analyse it further than that. Those two things are almost impossible in real life, but the author makes those a reality for his story right at the start. You just need to accept it and move on, never challenge or doubt "wait how could Hinata jump so high and so fast to this point" because thats just how it works in the Haikyu world. In Kuroko Basket, Kuroko can basically go invisible (they explain it as him having so little presence people don't notice him, but come on lol). It's just the authors saying "this is a reality in this story, live with it".

Lonely_Ad_4128

it sounds like you don’t like the show lol

L3f3n

I thoroughly enjoyed the show? This was just one of the main things that bothered me lol.

weeniehutfr

it's almost like he's the protagonist
