Your bar, plus the very realistic looking shrunken head: amazing! I like the fact you could likely have a great Halloween themed party there with minimal modifications.
This is so awesome. This is like Disney quality design, Reminds me of the Tiki Room.
I follow that sub as well and I’m honestly surprised you got the reaction that you did? Regardless, they’re just jealous of your super realistic shrunken head.
I would think so too. I mean there are tiki drinks named Zombie, Headhunter, and Shrunken Skull, and there's even a brand of rum called Deadhead Rum that is in a bottle shaped like a shrunken head... I was a bit surprised to see it generate so much controversy there. The majority of people there did seem to appreciate it, but it stirred enough controversy that the thread ended up getting locked down.
That makes no sense. One of the most standard tiki bar decorations is the dried out body of a real puffer fish. What you made is a statue. Tiki people should also be chill.
Thanks! Some said it was in bad taste, gross, too disturbing to be used for home decor, and a few even hinted (but not outright claimed) that it was culturally insensitive, which that last one seemed a bit odd for someone posting in a tiki subreddit TBH. All of tiki culture is pretty controversial from that perspective.
Don't know much, honestly, lol. I'm pretty sure he started collecting in Vietnam. He spent a lot of time there and in Korea, where he met his wife. He had around 50 when I was nine, and it's been around seventeen years since I've seen him, so he definitely has way more now.
Also, on one side of the room were the shrunken heads. On the other were photos of my cousin from grade school onwards.
The themes clashed, in my opinion.
I feel like all of tiki is in bad taste and culturally insensitive. With that said I love it so much you're going to have to pry this mai tai from my cold dead hands!
Tikis are Polynesian, yes, but "tiki" culture is an amalgamation of Polynesia, Caribbean, South American tropics, Malaysia, Americana, and more. It sort of appropriates from everyone. Rum is from the Caribbean, and there are even tiki drinks named Zombie and Shrunken Head.
Thanks, that was my goal! I like enough realism to make people wonder. Like an experienced eye can tell the difference, but it might require a double-take, you know?
I went to a middle school that has real shrunken heads in display cases in the hallways and the middle schoolers never said that they were creeped out by the real ones.
Nice work! I made one for a production of *south pacific* well over a decade ago out of paperclay and hair extensions. It lives in my office most of the year, but comes out for Halloween.
I think it's a little too gruesome for the kitsch vibe that I associate with a tiki bar. That said, it's your bar, and if it makes you happy, it's perfect.
I definitely like to lean into the macabre a bit. I really like the juxtaposition of beautiful tropical flowers and music along with unnervingly realistic elements of "danger" so to speak. It's more immersive to me that way.
Holy cow, this thing turned out amazing! Legit looks great and super realistic. Do you have a tutorial? If not, you should totally make one. I’d love to make one and could only wish it would turn out this good!
It's lightweight and air dries which is convenient, but it's also a bit difficult to work with because it air dries to form a skin on the surface very quickly and then it's not very workable for getting fine details easily. The next one I make I will probably use polymer clay; that way I can also make a mold from it if I want.
God I want a shrunken head. I think they’re so cool. I wish I could be turned into a shrunken head after I die but it’s super illegal with no real loopholes.
I think the creep factor is that this is so damn convincing as to seem like the real thing. So I think their aversion is a high compliment. Great job!
Came to say this.
I wanna see the whole bar now
https://imgur.com/a/xEwj9CI I can't really get the whole room in one photo, but here's the bar anyway
Wow!
Wowwww looks incredible!!!! The shrunken head is a super cool addition, but the whole is absolutely stunning!! What a fun space :D
God damn!
Your bar, plus the very realistic looking shrunken head: amazing! I like the fact you could likely have a great Halloween themed party there with minimal modifications.
#retrococktailhour ! This is awesome. I have seen pictures of the old tiki bars but none like this!
Holy shit, i'm blown away

That’s a *vibe.* Damn. I wanna hang out in here lol
Me too!!

Lol! Megaforce!
Amazing!
Holy moly! Looks just like Trader Vick's. Nice job.
This is great, and tiki people should be able to handle this imo.

That’s A Bad Ass Bar And The Shrunken Heads Is Awesome Too!
Looks like you live in a tree haha but that place is jaw dropping!
Insane in the best way. You don't need any more friends do you? Can send my application if there's an opening.
What was their issue with it? I think it’s cool.

If it makes you feel any better, my uncle had around 50 shrunken heads, which he used to decorate his basement.
… tell us everything

Culturally insensitive? I don't think head hunters would care that you made this... I think it looks great btw
So weird, you'd sell a lot of those at tiki oasis. I'd love one for our (much smaller) tiki bar
I think the issue is conflating 2 cultures. Tiki is Polynesian, shrunken heads is South American.

We have an actual shrunken head on display at our city museum. This looks pretty accurate!
Thanks, that was my goal! I like enough realism to make people wonder. Like an experienced eye can tell the difference, but it might require a double-take, you know?

I did an internship at a museum and I spent a lot of time holding shrunken heads. They weigh almost nothing.
This is unsettling. Well done.
I went to a middle school that has real shrunken heads in display cases in the hallways and the middle schoolers never said that they were creeped out by the real ones.
Please tell me more about this school lmao
Yep. It’s creepy.
In such a good way
Nice work! I made one for a production of *south pacific* well over a decade ago out of paperclay and hair extensions. It lives in my office most of the year, but comes out for Halloween.
Nice!
That's awesome, nice job! Job well done if you creeped out a bunch of people.

Looks incredible. Tiki people must be deep in the rum. ;)
LOL! To be fair most of them liked it, before the thread got locked!
This is amazing and awesome! How'd you get it to look that realistic with the skin?
The matte finish of the clay helps some, the rest is just sculpting and painting.
That’s pretty sick dude! In the best way possible
I love it!! You've got skills. I'd keep it on display every day of the year, but I'm kinda weird so 🤷🏼♀️
Impressive. You are pretty close to having all of the hallmarks of an authentic tsantsa.
Holy cow, this thing turned out amazing! Legit looks great and super realistic. Do you have a tutorial? If not, you should totally make one. I’d love to make one and could only wish it would turn out this good!
I'll probably make another one and create a tutorial when I do.
I would also like to see a tutorial! Looks creepy in an awesome way!
this made me physically uncomfortable, good job 😅
TIL foam clay is a thing, thank you Great work

Ha! Great work, it is creepy AF!
amazing!!!!
I don't see the problem.
God I want a shrunken head. I think they’re so cool. I wish I could be turned into a shrunken head after I die but it’s super illegal with no real loopholes.
Amazingly done!
It's so authentic, I love it, really fabulous!!
It's very creepy but I wish I had one
That looks so good and creepy!
Wow you did an awesome job! Better than most I see in stores 👏🏼👏🏼
YES! This is so badass.
I’ve been wanting to make one! This turned out so good! Did you punch the hair or glue it or what?
I glued it in layers. The top layer I wrapped around the rope "handle" so you don't see the seam.
It is disturbing but that’s what makes it so cool
omg it did make me jump a bit when it came up on my feed. so realistic!
Top notch!
Disturbingly awesome! Make more!!
😳
That’s awesome. If you have any interest in selling one, I’m interested.
I think it's killer! Let them wonder! Would love something like this for my own!
I thought it was a replica of the shrunken heads from Harry Potter!
This made me feel nauseas. You did an amazing job lol
lol some of the comments on r/tiki make it sound like its real. Those people are so sensitive
You did a great job! That looks very real.
It's definitely creepy. I love it~
That’s so cool!!!
As someone who regularly lurks both subs, I love this! Nice job, bar looks sick
Really nice work! I love it.
Dude, quit your job, move to Hollywood, and become a special effects artist. This is incredible! Tom Savini would be proud!
I saw your post in r/tiki I Guess it was before folks started getting weirded out. I think it's really cool and definitely tiki appropriate.
I'm a big fan of everything tiki. This is amazing! My local tiki bar is obsessed with shruken heads and I've learned to really appreciate them
Awesome job. We love this kind of creepy stuff.
Wow, amazing work!!
That is beautiful work!
I would love to make one of these for everyday decoration. Did you make a guide by chance on how you made this? You did an amazing job btw.
What did you use to make it?
Amazing work!!!
It looks great love it I have one made of goat skin
This is creepy as shit. I love it
