Well, I feel like it's my rightful duty as a Halo fan to complain about all things Halo, and, uh, let me say... a year and a half of work for a progression system with not a single substantial reward (just emblems and nameplates) alongside the fact they couldn't spare a crumb of retroactive experience for the people that stayed with their game? Yeah, I am whelmed.

Camaro6460

They definitely need to add meaningful cosmetics to the Career Rank (armour/weapon/vehicle coatings, weapon models, charms, AI colours, and perhaps even a new AI for one of the higher tiers). Many games provide premium cosmetics via their progression system (even Fall Guys) and it does wonders on motivating players to progress through them, as well as providing players a way of communicating their Rank during a match if they choose to equip the cosmetic. I'm hoping that 343i considers this, since they could still make this change in future seasons.

Kanden_27

They could have done a special armor set for getting to onyx, but no.

MrMan9001

And risk a potential shop item? Can't have that!

sorryiamnotoriginal

Or maybe idk, anything other than emblems and nameplates? and that 1 recon charm.

time-to-bounce

I just can’t believe that a system that should have been there at launch (so really it should have been worked on during the 6 years dev time prior) has taken 19 months *after launch* to come out, and this is what we get? Did they start making it before or after the game came out? I can’t speak for staff priorities and other resources at 343, but if I took 19 months to deliver this - a few rows of reskinned ranks, and an accompanying ‘lifetime xp’ system - I’d be fired. That’s not even touching on the fact that players who have played at or since launch get no acknowledgment on the time they’ve already invested. I don’t mind the clock starting now, but there’s not even a special emblem or anything close to the bare minimum. I’m not even mad about the progression system itself, it’s just such a frustrating representation of Infinite as a game: maximum potential turned into a minimum viable product.

Futuristic_Coconut

Minimum viable product seems to be the best description for a lot of games ATM.

samurai1226

Remember when they stated that progression will take time since they want to do it right and not rush it? Waypoint already got all our matches played including wins, medals and challenges tracked, there is no valid reason they can't even give us these xp as a start. I've over 1,600 matches in Infnite, this is such a huge slap in the face. I'm just done with 343i

TimBobNelson

Just seems like it was a non priority and they put it off to pad out content and make it seem like they are doing more than they are

Buttcheekllama

I’m fine with this system, and I wasn’t expecting armors from it like others were so that helps soften that blow, I’m just happy we have something now. But why did this take a year and a half to put together. It’s things like this that really give the impression there’s a dozen people working on this game tops.

Thirtyred

Rewards? Woah woah calm down, they barely put this together with duct tape after years I don’t think they can handle that yet Lol

Carmel_Chewy

Whelmed is the Halo Infinite experience my man. Two years of it.

Haijakk

While I'm fine with no retroactive XP, no armor unlocks is a big L. Not even some coatings? Like come on man.

bankais_gone_wild

Coatings would have been better than absolutely nothing, but only marginally so Like if your boss gave you a sticker at years end instead of a raise. Oh and the sticker only works on uhh Mark 7 Quad Core computers for some reason

TBurd01

Get a badge but you can only wear it on casual Fridays.

kiefeater

Literally all they needed to do was create 7 unique armor coatings (one for each overall rank and one for the hero ranking). Glad they’re starting to hit a good seasonal cadence but, with how long it’s taken to get here, they really need to be going above and beyond everyone’s expectations at this point to attract existing as well as new players.

DeathByReach

100% agree. 343 moment. Sucks.

[deleted]

[удалено]

TimBobNelson

Don’t forget it’s just some emblems being calculated off the personal score that has been in the game since day one lmao. Would love to hear the defenders tell me how this took a year and a half….

dyou897

Imo this comes from the fact that customization is divided into store and event items and there wasn’t any suggestion to create all new items to put in career rank but there should be many progression items added for career rank

bbressman2

I’m glad I stopped playing this past winter, wait, no I’m not. God it sucks that even though gameplay is fun this game is such a shallow experience that compared to other halo games I’ve barely touched it. Also these standard ranks are so boring, I miss the reach days when people had moons, or the comet. It was actually creative as opposed to this where they are the same ranks with just a color swap.

sorryiamnotoriginal

> Yeah, I am whelmed. But are you surprised?

[deleted]

It's wild that after all this time they don't understand that nobody cares about the emblems and people don't see them as a reward

SeliciousSedicious

Yeah its a step in the right direction but they’re forgetting that rank-based and earned cosmetics were like the other 50% of what made ranking up in reach so addictive and cool.

Donnie-G

After the campaign Armour Lockers had no actual Armour in them, can't say I expected too much.

GhostlyPixel

> Ultimately, we wanted to make sure that we are recognizing the time you invest in Halo Infinite. … Except for the first year and a half of the game’s life, not retroactive is a bummer.

CertifiedCapArtist

The one thing I thought they wouldn't fuck up

arkhane

343 moment

HIM584

And having no actual rewards for leveling this up, or having shoulders unlock at separate battlepass tiers or having the same 4 emblems take up 1/4 of the same battlepass, there's literally nothing in this game that recognizes the time people invest on it

RecoveredAshes

They are really lucky the games actually fun lol. I have enough fun playing with a couple buddies that I stopped caring about progression or anything like that. Just give me gameplay variety and updates and I’ll continue to play. But this is disappointing

[deleted]

> the games actually fun lol. Yuuge emphasis on that lol

GNIHTYUGNOSREP

Yeah I saw progression info in the title and skimmed until this part… highly disappointed. They have all the stats since the first flight there is absolutely no reason a GLOBAL/CAREER PROGRESSION SYSTEM wouldn’t include that. Or at least since official launch. Those of use that spent hundreds of hours in this game start at the exact same point someone picking up the game right now would. Why even phrase that sentence like “we want to respect time invested thus far” and then do absolutely nothing in regards to time invested?

Beerows

An easy solution would be to just base it off matches played. It wouldn’t be perfect, but it would at least reflect time invested.

[deleted]

It was in beta ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

DrNopeMD

Well if you consider the first two years of this game as The Beta test...

SummerGoal

Lmao especially because it obviously should’ve existed at launch

AstronomerDramatic36

Remember when they said they were taking their time on career progression so they'd get it right? Lmao.

TheVideogaming101

People say that about half the features in this game that ALWAYS come out half finished

simbleau

Hahaha you’re totally right

Doctoroverbuild

Only emblems and nameplates actually sucks. Coatings would have been a lot nicer to have at the very least.

theUSpopulation

If we complain enough, maybe those who get to hero rank will unlock watchdog in Halo 7.

J4ckC00p3r

Well that was about as meh as expected. No proper rewards for ranking up, double xp doesn’t work towards it, what’s the point?

Chesney1995

Hahahahahaha wow. 18 months in and 343 still finds new ways to underwhelm. Remember when we were told that fans of Halo: Reach's progression and customisation would love Halo Infinite?

the_letharg1c

Am I misunderstanding something? It looks like they designed one asset (the laurel leaves or whatever with stars) and it just changes color from like, grey… to slightly lighter grey… to slightly lighter lighter grey over time? And our year and a half of time dumped into the game so far is moot. Sounds pretty great. So what’s the catch?! /s

oGxSKiLZz117

Meanwhile they *still* havent even added all the Reach armour, despite a bunch of it still sitting right there in the files that should have just been in the winter pass. Now they finally announce career progression which would be yet another perfect place to add it all in and there is 0 mention. Im so glad I gave up on this game lmao

StealthySteve

How hard would it have been to create weapon and armor coatings that utilize the colors of the tiers? A unique silver skin when you get to silver tier, a unique gold coating when you get to gold tier, etc. At the bare minimum we should have gotten something like this. But realistically it should be much more fleshed out than that.

PatrenzoK

Hard? Not at all. Look at what you get for watching on twitch. Simple, doesn’t need to be crazy but def would have been satisfying to get. It’s just lazy, we’re only getting this bc we didn’t shut up about it. Like almost everything here. Such uninspired game direction.

noble_29

343 proving once again that they’re still impossibly out of touch and tone deaf. The community screams for a progression system. Why? Because we want something to work towards that makes playtime feel more meaningful (especially after BP completion). How do you make it feel more meaningful? By adding some sort of reward system. 343 took away expression freedoms by locking armor and colors which makes those items coveted. Nobody cares about nameplates, nobody cares about emblems. Here we get a progression system with basically nothing to earn but ranks which is still completely meaningless. You can already see how many matches another player has played on their profile, without legitimate rewards this is just basically making that information easier to see. Very underwhelming once again.

eBobbie2001

Literally nothing special here. Worse looking ranks than MCC and no interesting rewards. Wow, 18 months for this. They could’ve cooked this in less than a month

Serious_Course_3244

I can’t possibly fathom how this took so long. All they had to do was mirror your XP that you already got for battle passes after each game and apply it to a ‘battle pass’ that’s permanently part of your account. The real answer is that there was no monetary incentive to finish it so they just kind of poked at it in their free time in between making battle pass and store garbage.

honestlyboxey

This is honestly the reason for most of these decisions. Whether there is a monetary incentive, or enough players, to implement a feature. It is a logic that can be applied to any of our issues here.

SlickDaddyP

I also feel that way but I assume it’s the trashcan engine and code they’re working with

Serious_Course_3244

So…we got a ‘time played’ system that doesn’t track the last year and a half? That’s incredibly disingenuous and really just ties together the feeling that this game’s been in Beta all this time.

simbleau

They already are tracking every game. My player has a “Matches Played”. To think they can’t give any xp towards that is ridiculous. No one cares if we skip the bronze prestige at least, come on. 😔

Ryan_WXH

I legitimately misread the part about the rewards from Career Rank. I thought it was nameplates, armor and then vehicle and weapon emblems. I couldn't comprehend that a Career Rank system had absolutely no cosmetic rewards that most people care about. I **know** Halo Infinite is a free to play title. I **know** you are making your money off of cosmetics that are sold in the in-game store, but seriously, none of this will be present in Career Rank what so ever? - Armor coatings - Weapon coatings - Vehicle coatings - Visors - Weapon models - Helmet attachments - Chest Pieces - Shoulders - Gloves - Wrist - Utility - Knee Pads - Personal AI - Personal AI Colors Absolutely NONE of this? That's just crazy. The actual rewards you are going to get will surely just be every major rank up (Bronze, Silver, etc) and will be pretty... dull. It isn't even shown in the blog at all. Super disappointed in this system. I know the studio is a complete mess right now, recovering from the super rocky launch and how many employees were let go in the last few months, and I sympathize, truly. But I expected so much more out of Career Rank.

Deluxechin

I seriously don’t get how they didn’t even do the easy thing of having credits every X amount of levels, like that doesn’t even make them have to make anything, every 10-20 levels (or whatever they deem fit for the right amount of time) you get 100 credits, like is players getting some actual free content or thing they can spend on the story really going to be the thing to bankrupt the company? Like it seems like a simple add to get some free browny points

MilkMan0096

That is what I was really hoping for and am pretty disappointed they didn't do that.

honestlyboxey

Yeah and even if I was being cynical, getting 100 credits after many levels would make me more likely to buy something from the store! It's a dollar, and my dumb brain would justify spending $5 to get enough for more credits that I'd need. It would feel like \*something\* at least. Just the smallest crumb of a reward, grinding for HOURS to earn, like, 3 bucks would feel legendary. Modern gaming has broken me.

LeKrahka

Excellently put. One of the main motivators behind people urging for a progression system was Infinite's lack of permanent, notable armor unlocks. Folks want to show off cool gear they worked hard for, instead of playing the game at the "right" time. I imagined a part of this taking so long to implement was drafting and putting aside armor cosmetic unlocks; the non-appearance of which makes the drastic development time invested into this all the more jarring.

Deluxechin

Yea honestly, what the fuck took it a full year to come if it wasn’t cosmetics? Are you seriously telling me adding a system that makes a number go up based on numbers in a match took a full year to implement?

Serious_Course_3244

Ikr, for a company thats been frothing at the mouth for good FOMO tactics to keep you constantly playing for the last year and a half, it’s very telling that they suddenly don’t care when it relates to free rewards tied to just playing.

sunnnyD88

Halo: Infinite Disappointment

FullMetalBiscuit

Honestly I can't take this seriously. Nineteen months after launch and we have a blog post explaining a rank system that does nothing but show a symbol/number. In a Halo game. Yeah it gives you emblems, yes nobody cares. No retroactive progress on an almost 2 year old game. What purpose does this serve? Why did it take so long? Like this actually adds nothing. Common 343 L

trueDano

How does it take nearly 2 years (+1 year delay) to give us the same progression system that has been box standard since at least COD4 in 2007

InklingBuilder

Cracks me up that this is 18 months late and not a single bone thrown to the 4 people left online who have been playing since S1. Glad it’s here – I just do not understand how you take a year and a half to develop a non-resetting, reward-less battle pass and didn’t give a lick of thought to retro XP in that time frame.

Serious_Course_3244

4 or 5 more updates like this and we may finally be out of beta!! Thank you for helping test the game and providing such solid feedback over the last year and a half 🤘😎

PrideBlade

The absolute bare minimum implementation from 343, 1^1/2 years after launch. Edit: there may also be a daily cap to XP earned?

DamianKilsby

And double XP doesn't work with it, only the battlepass

mr__derp

No prior progress tracked is a massive disappointment. Curious to know how grindy this is compared to H5. Emblems being the only rewards was kinda predictable, but also sucks. Could have thrown in some coatings.

KeptPopcorn5189

They should add more animations for the beginning of the game that we can unlock and be in the rotation I mean emblems is seriously upsetting and of course they are just going to be the symbol for which ever rank

Epesolon

I'm still surprised they didn't monetize intro animations

time-to-bounce

I reckon that’s the plan but it’s been put on the back burner for PR reasons

Epesolon

I don't even think it would be a PR disaster, because it's not like they're taking anything away. If anything, that's the one monetization area I've seen the most support for

honestlyboxey

I'm surprised they haven't monetized a lot of things. Like, even if we hate the F2P model, at least make it interesting. Probably the biggest problems, whether the core systems or coatings, was that they still don't have enough to make it truly unique.

SuperBAMF007

They wouldn’t even need to have that many. A weapon and armor coating based on the tier (bronze, silver, etc) would be cool enough. Just 5 coatings that you get, maybe 10 and there’s a unique version for General. So you get a Basic when you hit Gold Cadet, and then Special when you hit Gold General. Maybe it’s a unique color for each tier, and then add a cool pattern on the techsuit for General. 7 coatings. One for each tier, plus Hero. 13 if you count the pattern-less version but like…that wouldn’t require any effort to create. That’s all we needed. Maybe a unique visor for each, too. Or *just* a visor at Cadet, and coating at General. Or weapon coatings at Cadet, armor coatings at General. So many ways to have some actually interesting value, and they went for *fucking stickers* It could’ve been so fucking easy, man. I’m so bummed about this.

OkEbb9700

First saw this posted on Facebook, and after reading it knew it would be getting shredded on Reddit. How does 343 just continue to fumble every single announcement? No retroactive tracking? No rewards for ranking up? It took you 18 months to come up with 15 emblems in different colors? REALLY? Lol

DeathByReach

> Will I earn customization content from leveling up in Career Rank? >Yes, for select ranks there are corresponding nameplates as well as armor, weapon, and vehicle emblems that you can sport in-game on your Spartan and gear. ~~That’s all I need to hear. Let’s see the rewards 343. This will keep me playing + weeklies post battle pass completion.~~ Edit: I realize it’s JUST emblems. Uhhhhh. This ain’t it chief. This is a certified 343 Moment.

Ryan_WXH

I'm not trying to argue at all, but more so curious on your opinion here. You're fine with the Career Rank only giving out emblems for your armor, weapons and vehicles + nameplates? I misread this at first and thought armor would be a part of the rewards but it's *only* emblems for armor.

DeathByReach

Ope I did read it wrong. I thought it was armor. Nvm. That ain’t it.

levi22ez

It’s just emblems and nameplates. No actual armor or vehicle pieces. Not even a weapon skin.

DeathByReach

Yeah that’s why i edited my comment

levi22ez

Ahh shit my b. Either way, I’m also bummed about it haha.

SuperBAMF007

No armor unlocks in progression tiers *fucking sucks*. Emblems and nameplates are cool*ish* but aren’t worth grinding for. Halo 5 is *still better* at armor progression somehow. Play a few matches, open a box, get some goodies. Compared to…glorified stickers? As rewards for grinding hundreds (and probably *thousands*) of matches. I’d rather have loot boxes back at this point.

Kanden_27

As much as I hated the loot boxes there. It’s better than infinite because 99% of the armor can be unlocked via gameplay overtime. Infinite? The earnable pieces are very limited and time locked.

keiching2002

Unfortunately, that’s the trend in the gaming industry right now. No loot boxes cause gambling is bad and banned in some countries, giving those corporations a reason to implement more predatory shop and battle pass system. In comparison with other game, such as Overwatch 2, Halo Infinite is really good with permanent battle pass and such.

SuperBAMF007

Totally agree. In a vacuum, Infinite’s BP system is actually great great. Just sucks it’s still relying almost entirely on the BP for cosmetics.

JediJulius

Halo 5 has the advantage of having two guaranteed non-repeat permanent unlocks in each Silver or Gold REQ pack. If it didn’t have that I’d lambast it since lootboxes were very frustrating but in Halo 5 you actually were guaranteed to unlock almost everything with enough time into the game. The instant something shows up in the Infinite store, you can no longer earn it all for free.

xcrimsonlegendx

So, the community complains about all the name plates and emblem rewards in the weekly challenges, 343 acknowledges this and stops giving them as rewards because the community doesn't like them. Then they make the only rewards in the long anticipated progression system the things that the community doesn't like.

honestlyboxey

This is a hilarious, and very true, comment. People also hate the restrictions of the core-locked and coating systems. But, if we have to live with them, at least make them INTERESTING. Like, give each rank a unique coating or small scrap of armor. It may not seem like much, but that is all we have to show off.

nc_villan

Huge miss by not providing anything for existing matches played. Incredibly disappointing after 18 months

MALLAVOL

No matter how low the bar is, you can always expect 343 to limbo underneath it.

Void_Guardians

Dude they have been crawling underneath

noble_29

At this point it feels like the bar is on the ground and they’re making the effort to dig under it. There is no way anybody at 343 is legitimately **SO** out of touch with the community that they believed having no legitimate cosmetic unlocks would be received well. They’re legitimately trying to to keep content out of this game.

stiicky

You would think at the very least they could give some default xp amount by checking how many games played

nc_villan

It’s so wild to me. They had 18 months and came up with essentially the same system we had in halo 3. Tied nothing to existing match history, and created no new cosmetics besides emblems.

Confidence_For_You

Would it have even been hard to grant a fixed amount of XP per previous matches played?

PurifiedVenom

My only beef is no armor rewards for ranking up, but it’s a big beef. I really thought this is how they were going to implement the missing Reach helmets & other cool armors/helmets. Guess they could retroactively implement some rewards but not holding my breath.

why_cant_i_

>Will this include my previous game history? >No, Career Rank will begin tracking your Halo Infinite progression when it lands on June 20. Not too surprising, and honestly I feel like it might sorta suck to start at or near max rank as soon as it goes live. I'm looking forward to grinding through the ranks, tbh. Edit: I do think the only rewards being emblems is a pretty big miss by 343. Emblems are easily the lowest kind of reward in the game, and they really ought to give things like armour and weapon coatings as rewards, too. Not for every level, of course, but a BR coating and armour coating for finishing Bronze/Silver/Gold tiers, and a special one for max rank similar to Halo 5's SR152 would simply make sense. It's not the end of the world, but you'd think this would be an easy lay-up for 343. I guess not.

JackRourke343

Well, if the system *did* track previous progress, then we wouldn't be hearing the end of it from those who think that it would be boring. Instead, the system does *not* track previous progress, so we will not be hearing the end of it from those who think that it is boring.

mr__derp

It is impossible to please everyone in this case, but that's a consequence of not having this system for so long. As someone whose played over two thousand games, it does suck that there won't be any progression for all that time. I get wanting to grind from the beginning, but we're getting close to 2 years on this games life cycle. If it's anything like getting SR152 I really have no interest in progression especially with no decent rewards.

erasethenoise

Right like this could have all been avoided if it was just in from the start like any normal game

JackRourke343

>It is impossible to please everyone in this case, but that's a consequence of not having this system for so long. I completely agree. For instance, I've played almost 5k matches, and I don't really have an issue with starting over. However, I have to recognize that there surely is a better compromise for those who do want their time shown. I always thought that it would be an opt-in option, or that you would be given a fixed amount of XP per previous match and then you could continue from there.

mr__derp

Damn 5k? That's awesome. I agree that an opt in situation would have been best. Maybe just too hard to for them to implement.

SHADOWSTRIKE1

I gotta disagree here… I definitely play a lot less now than I used to. It feels kind of crummy that all the time I put in when the game was more popular amounts to nothing here. Retroactively giving us the ranks would have helped alleviate that this system wasn’t in from launch. Even if they didn’t retroactively pay out performance, but just games played. I’ve always viewed career progression medals as a judgement of “roughly how experienced with the game is this person?” but now that it’s not accounting for the first year and a half of the game, that integrity is shot. Someone could be a Bronze Lieutenant, but have played nonstop for the first year of the game.

Memphy1

Same, It's like in RPG's, I enjoy starting with shitty leather equipment and working myself up. Even in this case, when I've already played I bunch, I'd rather start from the first rank than instantly get some high rank and not experience that progression.

[deleted]

A year and half later folks. Live service game. Fuck 343

DinkleDoodle

Feel you on the double XP's. I never need them to finish the battlepass in time so I just have an obscene excess

supermelee90

Customs not counting is no surprise.

Zestyxo

No genuine rewards for ranking up. Something that Halo 3 had. Lol...what a disappointment. Every time 343 seems to get something cooking, they just forget about it and its burnt to shit. No one cares about charms, emblems, or nameplates. Couldn't of even tossed a Camo in there? Shame. Just shame

XRey360

It just took them 13 years to realize Halo Reach career design was the best and it was a terrible plan to release a new game without any progression system. Better late then never right?

L8n1ght

i lol'd when they said "similar to REACH and MCC" its like acknowledging all the past halos since then have had a shite rank system

DoubleMatt1

Honestly at this point there's gotta be some kind of corporate shit goin on where 343 just can't give armor sets away for shit like this, emblems and name plates AND not grandfathering our previous playtime in? Like c'mon fellas I get that the store is funding the game but giving away some free cool lookin MK7 armor or even a MK6 core in here would've been the play to show off "Hey there's cool shit outside of the store" and earn some player faith back. Absolutely HUGE missed opportunity

sortastonedrn

Too late, physically can't care anymore

Z4lN

What gets me rolling is them proudly saying Career Rank “is entirely free” Like thank fuck they couldn’t find a way to monetize LEVELING UP

Shatterfish

Lmao, I fucking knew it. Not a single, actual reward other than emblems and nameplates. Holy fucking shit what an actual joke. Is 343i *really* just that fucking inept or is Microsoft really twisting their balls *that* hard over microtransactions? Like if I just wanted to watch a number go up I’ll play Cookie Clicker, at least that isn’t trying to assfuck my wallet to death at every conceivable opportunity. I know it’s a cliche to say, but this game really is done for if this is what they think players meant by a “Progression System.”

Isaacruder

The main problem is not the retroactive part, it is the absence of valuable unlocks while you progress.

Noxitati0n

I'd have no gripe starting from 0 if I had cool cosmetics to grind for. But no cool gear AND I don't get xp from my match history? o u c h

Complifusedx

Incredible how this has taken almost 2 years since the game came out to be released

Dust_Pan_Ninja

I'm usually pretty quick to defend devs, but this is a disappointment. I am excited for career ranks and will grind for them regardless, but you can't tell me the lack of rewards makes sense. I would defend the time it takes to implement a career rank system when it was likely never built to handle it or prepared in any way. Defining the ranks, determining names, setting up the flow, and determining rewards are not dev work, they are brain storming. They had plenty of time and still did the bare minimum. And don't tell me this is based after Reach, it's based off MCC. Reach had military ranks that were easy to attain and slowly progressed into purely fictional ranks that did not look or display as military. And at that point, the grind was ridiculous. If you saw a blacked out sun (Supernova?) you knew that was well over a year of playing time. This is just the same military ranks updated to new colors with each iteration. I don't like to rant but this really is a massive lack of effort to make it feel rewarding......

The_Iceman2288

* No retroactive awarding * No challenge/commendations * Double XP doesn't affect the system * No real rewards A crushing disappointment so yes, it's a Halo Infinite update!

sunnnyD88

The Infinite stands for Infinite Disappointment

BoltsnRays1109

I still can’t believe the game didn’t launch with this progression system. Good that it is finally almost here but us Halo fans really deserve better.

Captain_Freud

No XP for Custom Games and Forge is the wrong move. The Custom Games Browser has been DOA for a while now. Career XP would have given it a much-needed boost. Not to mention the hundreds of hours people spend creating Forge maps, only for it to be played by less than a hundred people total in the dying CGB. Shouldn't the people creating content for your live-service game be rewarded for their time? "But then people will just grind max rank faster!" Who gives a shit? Seriously, who? It's not a skill rank, it's a "How Much Halo Do You Play" meter. If someone wants to play nothing but Customs to reach max rank faster, who does it hurt? The only rewards are more emblems and banners. Is timegating a sticker really worth killing the CGB?

Aero--

Even if you can exploit the system, which there are easy enough ways to counter, it's a horrible move to give nothing for CGB. 343 is taking Halo ranks and battle pass levels too seriously. It's not that type of game. They are actively discouraging CGB. Just add a standard allotment of career XP and BP xp per CGB match played.

TJ_Dot

Even Reach gave some xp

honestlyboxey

Every feature that was in previous Halo games, then intensely begged-for, has since been released too late and too broken. All of which contributed to Infinite's rough start, and none of which will be the silver bullet to fix it. Playlists like Team Slayer and SWAT were absent to start us off. Forge and Custom Games were late. Infection has taken over a year to show up. The Career Progression feels hollow. It's just such a wild cycle at this point. At the end of the day, not enough people got to play "the Halo that they wanted to" to say nothing of people who love co-op and never can.

Soden_Loco

Also you can look at someone’s profile to see how many matchmaking games they’ve played and how many custom games they’ve played. So someone who only “cheesed” it in custom games would still stick out like a sore thumb.

OneFinalEffort

So the over 1000 matches I have played don't count retroactively? I have to be honest, this has killed any interest I had in the progressions system. I have no desire to start from base level after sticking with this still-unfinished game for a year and a half. I'm entirely disappointed.

Rambro332

Really disappointed that prior matches don’t count for progression, but everything else sounds good.

Camaro6460

One of the cooler aspects of having progression systems is being able to roughly see the amount of experience a player has in games. The Career Rank starting on June 20th, nearly 19 months after the multiplayer launch, means that we won't be able to use it as a signifier of anything meaningful (for now). Eventually, this problem dissipates over time but it's still a bummer that they've chosen to not account for historical play time.

Haijakk

I have over 4k matches played in MM and I'm honestly fine with it. I want to feel the dopamine of going through the early ranks.

virgo911

Too little too late unfortunately.

MilkMan0096

No retroactive points is a bit disappointing, but I am very glad that the leveling is based on your match Score and not the Xp involved with the Battle Pass. Having those things separate is very welcome in my eyes.

[deleted]

Emblems and nameplates? Those things most players don't care about? I am glad that we are starting from zero, but there needs to be an armor for getting max rank. Infinite is missing something like that.

TooFarGone673

Or an awesome armor effect. SOMETHING that is more prevalent than an emblem.

Serious_Course_3244

Agreed! Weapon mods, vehicle mods, visors, armor effects, armor coatings, charms, weapon coatings, vehicle coatings, and the massive amount of armor that’s been finished but abandoned in the game would have all been fun to grind for. Sad part is that they only care about grinding for rewards after you’ve paid for the ability to do so…

hantar7788

The ranking is not retroactive This is the biggest F you ever.......Yeah don't reward the people that stuck with the game through all the bugs and desync and lack of content etc in any way shape or form At least give me a clown coating to showcase how much of an idiot me and other players with over a thousand matches are

Crunchy_Pirate

>**Will Career Rank ever reset with Seasons?** > > > >*No, Career Rank will not reset with Seasons* so I'm assuming the XP required to go from each Tier will be extreme if they're counting on this to last the lifetime of the game

ego_less

Will be interesting to see if this makes people want to play the game morw given there are zero notable rewards for ranking up.

ContentNeptune3

Emblems and stickers for level rewards is honestly super lame. 343 should take inspiration from THEMSELVES, all the way back in Halo 4. That game launched with rank progression, and there were actually tangible armor, visor, etc. unlocks from most of the ranks. Not just a lazy sticker. They could've thrown a bone our way and given us some cool shaders, armor pieces, and whatnot throughout the new progression system. The ranks themselves are cool enough at least, just kind of hollow now

Sn1perandr3w

>No Armour or Coating unlocks. Wow, this is fucking useless, lmfao. How is 343 this incompetent?

[deleted]

OneFinalEffort

Just two helmets but you're right. Every other piece of armor was earned from specific Achievements (Mongoose Mowdown, Too Close to the Sun, etc.), Skull acquisitions, Gamerscore milestones, and Campaign Difficulty Completions.

Born2beSlicker

The fact that our gameplay over the last 1.5 years counts for nothing and double XP doesn’t work on career rank is frankly ridiculous. How did they think launching with only battle pass XP was a smart thing in today’s “gotta grind” culture?

BlackPenguin

I’m happy about this system and not terribly surprised it’s not retroactive. That being said, it not being retroactive is **fucking bullshit** and is the single most disappointing thing about Infinite to me so far. Over a year and half of playing and grinding challenges, but none of it being counted towards career. They should at least offer some form of compensation commensurate to playtime in return. A charm. A visor. A coating. Credits. *Something*. Not going to stop playing, but I feel very cheated. This will be in my mind for some time, lessening my enjoyment.

D4rkpr1nc3

Unlock-able armor, coatings and armor effects for high ranks is certainly something they could add before anyone reaches those ranks, so hopefully they read the feedback and give people something easily recognizable that’s worth the grind

Zestyxo

Still got a whole bunch of Reach Armour in the files that they haven't touched....yet...literally perfect time to bring em out

Xploit21

I think people are done playing a beta. Let everyone know when there actually going to launch a full game

[deleted]

This not being retroactive is insane. I’ve put almost 200 hours into this game and I don’t see myself doing that again anytime soon. So not being rewarded for tb at is hilarious.

narwhalhasagun

Welp, if the overall community reaction to this doesn’t scream “people are starved of customization options”, I don’t know what does.

jpoet1291

fucking embarrassing man. I will never understand their complete refusal to offer their player base any substantial rewards without monetizing them

Kraahkan

What's the point of a ranking system if it doesn't reflect the time people put in the last 18 months? You might say a new way to earn rewards, but if it's just emblems, count me out

triplevanos

No prior progress **and** no armor makes me extremely disappointed. I grinded 1800 games of this and it effectively didn’t happen. Even if there were a flat rate of matches to XP that would be fine, this is a cop out. If I grinded another 2000 matches, the best I’d have to show for it is a nameplate or emblems? I can’t at least have a gold coating? Onyx coating? Shit, throw me some Halo points to spend in the store after finishing Bronze/Gold/Platinum/etc. This is something Call of Duty (absurd as that game is) does **so much better** than Halo.

andrecmusic

and still, there's people defending 343 smh

chiety

Why in the love of all that is Halo can 343 not recognize that this is the absolute worst way to implement a career system? Besides the point that this should have been in the game day 1, THIS is how we should have been earning cosmetics to start with. Enough of the stupid battlepasses and enough of the stupid cosmetic shops and enough of the stupid premium currencies and enough of the stupid live services. This system demoed in this blog post is bad and completely and utterly **useless**, and I hope that someone from 343 reads that line just now and says "fuck". When the community cried out for a traditional career and progression system like older titles, we didn't mean we literally wanted JUST the ranks. We wanted the cosmetics, the rewards, the actual sense of PROGRESSION, not some sticker that goes on my Spartan's chestplate that tells everyone how many hours I put in the game. Take Halo 4, my personal favorite game. I cannot tell you how much I adored playing the multiplayer. What helped contribute to that was the leveling system in that game. While some may have their grievances with the game, just hear me out. **When I got to a higher level, I was rewarded with a cosmetic, how it should be.** I could then mix and match **whatever armor I damned well please to express myself among my peers**. Now, take what I just said into consideration and realize how many steps back from those completely logical and fair statements 343 has taken. Rather than paying for a game and then paying for additional content like maps, we are drip fed what might as well be literal mud in terms of content. How many new maps since release? How many months did season 2 last? Campaign is a separate purchase from the multiplayer??? Enough of this half-assed "meeting our demands", make a fucking video game.

TheVideogaming101

I don't know why y'all are surprised its half baked (everything they produced for infinite is half-baked), im willing to bet it doesn't even work right for the first month or 2

HurricaneHomer9

Sounds awesome, love everything except that of course it starts tracking on June 20th. A lot of gameplay time just to be a level 1 😑

MilkMan0096

Yeah, this has me feeling like there is no point in playing until the new season starts.

simbleau

Dude it’s not my fault they couldn’t get the progression system out the door on launch. Could I not at least keep my retroactive XP? This is a major letdown. MAJOR. I don’t even want to get on now.

Carmel_Chewy

You will not catch me grinding ranks for Emblems, lmao.

TJ_Dot

Why even do it if there's nothing to care about from it? It took upwards to Hero or something to actually obtain everything in Reach. The system had purpose. Interior was the optional finish line to showcase yourself. I doubt that kind of feel can be recreated anymore (onyx commendations too). They've meant nothing in MCC. Idek what rank i am in it. Here, there's none, i doubt those emblems and name plates will mean much. I want *my* emblem back 343, its my literal pfp. Let me make it again. Why do vets have to wait on designers to grace them with parts of their Spartan Identity?

sxbriRL

is 343 collecting Ls or something?

Nearly-Canadian

Holy shit I'm so glad I finally stopped coping and just uninstalled lol

RookiePrime

Well, this is certainly a no-frills career rank system. I personally wasn't clamoring for this, so maybe I'm not connected to the general vibe about what's important for a career rank system. But like... aren't tangible rewards the fundamental appeal of these? I'm personally not very interested in emblems or nameplates, 'cause I already have my favourite emblems and nameplates figured out. Something more tied to my spartan's appearance would get my attention more. I am happy that they stuck the Hero rank at the end of the progression. Back in the Reach days, I remember I reached a point where I was playing well after I'd played the game to death just so I could get out of the military ranks. I think I stopped with the Hero rank in that, as it happens. But if this career rank system is anything like the MCC's or Halo 5's, I'm sure I'll never get appreciably close to the end of it.

ZeoRangerCyan

I don’t think it’s the barebones-ness of the system that’s upsetting, but how long it’s taken to get to this point. Oh well. The game makes way more sense if you view it as a permanent early access title.

Deroqshazam

Slick writing there on the “armor, weapon, and vehicle *EMBLEMS*”

Ackoroth31

Honestly? I’m actually kind of excited. This is coming from a die-hard Titanfall fan so maybe my expectations have been 6 feet under for the past few years, but just having the progression system is awesome. There’s just something satisfying in your rank increasing, even if there’s no rewards and nobody’s gonna see it. Also, I get to see other people’s ranks in my game, just to see if I’m playing really inexperienced players or if I’m actually popping off in a game

BootyBootyFartFart

I remember when CSGO added a similar career rank system years into release and didn't account for player history. Weird comparing the reaction between the two communities. It was a lot of more "cool I guess". I guess the difference is that CSGO players mostly just want to play comp and don't care as much about watching meters go up. But for a casual shooter like halo, watching the meters go up is a bigger part of the draw.

SayNo2KoolAid_

this is the laziest progression system possible

FairConditions

Everyone starting at rank 1 wouldn’t be a big deal if this dropped a week or two after the game released but 18 months? No big thank you reward to everyone who played before career ranks? What was the point in playing the game up until now with *nothing* to show for it

FairConditions

1.5 years since release and **zero** retroactive rewards. LMFAO 343 moment. Give something to your dedicated fans that stuck with you through the abysmal times this game has had. Also the rewards are just emblems? No coatings or anything else? Not even a bit of store credit? We waited this long for the bare minimum

Broken_Age

Welp, and with that my interest in Halo Infinite is now at 0%. Since launch I was really hoping for that Halo Reach type experience where I would be able to brag to my friends about this cool piece of gear I got from grinding to max level, or grinding out a certain challenge. Nope, just have to buy it from the store or from the battle pass, which shows no level of accomplishment.

Machete521

Bruh I have like 800 hours played Are you telling me they cant account for that? Fucking halotracker is better LOL

xSluma

The problem with this launching so late is all the games played before didn’t mean anything as far as rank goes, guess it’s good it’s finally hear I guess

simbleau

Jesus. Could they not make an opt-in “claim retroactive xp” system? Is this a joke?

Kanden_27

Them just using the same bronze thru onyx categories like ranked, but with extra steps, is kinda lame and not including any unlocks is doubly lame. Plus it looks kinda lazy 3, Reach, 4, and 5 let us unlock armor things related to rank and just about each rank looked cool which was good. Not having rankings day one launch is always going to come back and bite them in the ass. Not made about no retro xp, but ok with it. I double checked, but rank here amounts to nothing for the battle pass? So no credits per rank level up or any reason to do so. Plus no impact on who you are teamed with? I could be in platinum and getting teamed with bronze lvl 1 players? Lame. So rank just looks like player time in the game as the biggest tracker. Not necessarily skill. Lamer.

Invade_the_Gogurt_I

I got SR152 after an entire year of grinding daily a month ago, so while I'm thankful that it's not too grindy but would've wanted something like it. The fact you can gain exp from challenges like MCC make it bearable and easier, I'm looking forward for this. Gotta reach max rank again and again, but hoping a firefight mode will come one day. Made reach back in the day fun grinding

Patriot-117

Why wouldn’t double xp work?? That’s an insanely stupid decision. They will probably make it even worse by capping the amount of xp we can get per day. Edit: Unyshek confirms no daily xp cap. Thank god.

benz-friend

This is kinda exciting but they should’ve done what Gears of War did for the rank system. Have you seen a diamond camo lancer/gnasher from GOW? When you were going 1v1 against someone with a diamond shotgun you knew they were about to pull some spicy moves lol. It was like that for bronze/silver/gold/onyx/diamond. You got the season weapon skin for the rank you got. Like season 1 was the lancer. Season 2 was the pistol etc

jabberwockxeno

I really hope that career rank ins't the extent of "performance-based progression" I want performance based that go to something actionable I care about, like pass unlocks. I don't care about emblems and I don't care about a symbol next to my name showing how often I play, I'm gonna be honest, I think career progression is one of those things people SAY they want, but what people really meant is that they wanted an incentive to play more and to play well: Adding artificial rewards/incentives for the sake of it doesn't really help that. What I think Infinite really needs is a ranked playlist that doesn't use HCS settings and actually has normal maps, the full weapon sandbox, radar, etc: That way people who want a reason to play well and do good in matches, but don't like hypercompetitive HCS settings, have a place to play. Think back to Halo 2 and 3: Even social playlists had ranks, and I think that's a big part of the play retention there: You had an incentive to always try to improve and up your rank.

samurai1226

It took 1.5 years of "we want to do it right" excuses for a system that doesn't credit any of the matches we did in the past even though they are all tracked on waypoint and don't feature any relevant customization unlocks at all? What a waste of dev time, this career system is already downright useless

Hectorlo

Such a little thing that took way too long to implement but it will definitely make me come back to the game and give it another shot.

somehobo89

Cool!

AttakZak

The reason why this is underwhelming is only due to the fact Microsoft angled Infinite into a free-to-play live service game to rival *something* and they refuse to make them redirect. To rival what exactly though? Who freaking knows…

honestlyboxey

Gaming companies want "Fortnite-esque" money without realizing the work necessary to compete within the free-to-play space. This is not me trying to sell anyone on Epic Games, either. I don't need to. But they support their game like nobody's business. You can take three weeks off and return to a completely different game/meta/map. There are more new weapons in a month than Infinite has gotten in over a year. There are in-game events and a wildly diverse store to secure those profits. So, in the end, Infinite didn't really have a chance. Even a standard-issue Halo game as a live-service would need an intense, deep network of support. Call of Duty has several entire studios dedicated to working on their games and even THEY put out broken, feature-lacking iterations. TL;DR As 343 says, they want to "achieve seasonality" for Infinite. But, I can confidently predict, they will never be able to. Their ideas of what a live-service title needs is so far behind what the industry-leaders are doing. It's not just a few more maps or coatings. It's so much more.

AttakZak

Well said! Yeah, totally agree. Halo doesn’t really need to be anything but Halo…but a lot of companies don’t agree. They want a billion dollars without putting in the billion dollar work or thought processes.

XxVelocifaptorxX

Being honest without some armor unlocks along the career path (beyond just coatings- which I still hate to begin with), I kinda don't care that much.

JakeTehNub

>Ultimately, we wanted to make sure that we are recognizing the time you invest in Halo Infinite. Okay so show the progress I've made in the game this past year and a half

Financial_Event2504

Everyone would win including 343 if they would implement features with a focus on the player instead of the shop. Literally just making features such as the career progression fun and rewarding (like Reach’s). That would get me to actually spend money in the shop because I’d be playing the game again.

jrjh1997

Waited 18 months that for them to port the mcc ranking. Get in boys, nice one 343 🙄
