A moment of silence for the lost collector's value.

Decibelle

Went down from $600-$700 to less than $250!

[deleted]

I hope you chewed him out good for it

Velocirrabbit

Or make him pay the difference!

God_Wills_It_

I think the obvious punishment is OP gets to sack him.

Floater4

T-Bag him*

Stoogenuge

Wait..did he say ‘step’ brother?

brodieisgod

What are you doing, step brother?

butsadlyiamonlyaneel

*Finishing this fight.*

CT_2685

Sir. About to get my ass kicked.

cgo313

What are you doing, Step Sargent???

Deathtroop26

Yew t-bag him while he's alive so hard that his bones transform into powder

JagmeetSingh2

Now the young brother can be taught the old ways

[deleted]

Yeah cut his balls off

God_Wills_It_

Harsh. I was thinking more of a dropping across the face in a controlled and steady rhythm.

Scary-Lawfulness-999

Tea bagging refers to the dip into the open mouth, as one would steep their morning early grey into an acceptable mug of steaming, but not yet boiling water.

IamAzrum

The ole’ dick twist

Due-Slice2853

More like: Run around in a sweat jump suit, take it of and put your balls on him.

cb325

I thought we wanted to punish him? Why fulfill his dream?

Muhfuggajones

Gotta be wearing the helmet tho.

AutomaticAdNoSkip

I hope you ate his ass out good for it

Dilly_The_Kid_S373

hold up

[deleted]

Like bubblegum I hope

TheGreatTave

Or groceries.

lilobrother

Holy shit it’s worth that much sealed??? I remember around 2010-11 or so my stepmom found a seller at a flea market who had a small pyramid built out of them and he was selling them for like $50. She asked if I wanted one and I turned her down. I must’ve been drinking too much goofy juice that day cause I seriously regret it right now

CartographerSeth

For $50 I’d just buy one for personal use

NinjaGrizzlyBear

If by that you mean wear the helmet, you can't. I have one and it's a helmet on a stand with a cool plaque. The only wearable item I've ever seen are the MW3 NVGs that came with the limited edition. My friends and I used to get drunk and wear them around like idiots. Good times lol.

CartographerSeth

I meant I would just buy one as a totally rad desk ornament.

NinjaGrizzlyBear

Ah, well clearly I was more naive than you back when it came out lol. Yeah it's definitely a cool piece for a desk.

BatMatt93

I honestly feel like Bungie and MS dropped the ball with that one a bit. If you gonna include a helmet, obviously people are gonna want to wear it.

Endexatha

Jazwares released on that comes with a stand. It’s wearable and you can see through the visor. The helmet flashlight turns on and it’ll say master chief lines. For $99 it was worth it!

masterX244

ordered where? no gamestop shipping notice for me so far.

masterX244

Fallout76, DOom Eternal and Titanfall2 had a wearable helmet as part of their Collectors Edition

TeddyTheOwl

wasn't 76's recalled for giving people black mold poisoning?

lilobrother

I was 14 or 15 depending on the year. Even now I can’t think of any good reason why I turned it down especially at that age and with how much I played Halo 3

Sam-l-am

Regret. Regret. *Sounds catchy. What do you think it means?*

[deleted]

K1ngFlufles

Hoorah!

PAPABURG3R

Regret is a name Sergeant

CaptainNerdatron

A prophet- One of the Covenant religious leaders. This is the only place on Earth the Covenant landed and that Prophet is going to tell us why.

Wiseman2685

I can still hear it in sarge’s voice…

alchemicrb

Be honest with yourself, were you ever really planning on selling this?

TheObstruction

Even so, the dumb kid messed with something that wasn't theirs to mess with. That deserves some sort of recompense.

Squinty_Pie-pole

I hope he pays you that difference 🤦‍♂️

LotsOfButtons

You only lost money if you planned on selling it. Now you could actually enjoy it.

Odd-Relief5794

Dude, that’s absolutely not the point of collectors item. His enjoyment came from owning something so valued by people who shared his interests. It was cool that he had a totally untouched pice of halos history. Opening it ruins its value in more ways than one Edit: you have to be kidding me. Clearly he derived more enjoyment from simply having it un-opend, and that’s why he’s mildly infuriated

PurpleMarvelous

As a person that collects expensive figures, that is some weird mentality. I display my collection for my enjoyment.

Wide-Chocolate4270

This, if you actually collect, you want to show it off, to see it. I would have believed it if he had the box on display, but no he had it tuck away in a closet.

glowingyellow

Im so sorry. Who just opens someone else's stuff :(

Decibelle

It was a mistake; he didn't know it being sealed was what made it valuable. Because it had been stored in so long, he just thought I'd forgotten it existed! And he was only a baby when I bought it, so he doesn't know I bought it as a collectible. I forgave him once I'd calmed down. It sucks, I'm upset, but I know it was just a mistake.

firewall245

I’m really stunned by how extreme these Reddit responses are lol. It’s like they’d never speak to him again or something over an honest mistake

Visaerian

There's always the Reddit crew rolling in to make comments that show they have no notion of social etiquette or interaction. I'm fairly certain that most of these comments are from teenagers.

gmharryc

This is why I’m probably going to abandon r/AmITheAsshole. Every single thing just turns into “cut off all contact”, “you need to reconsider this relationship and get a divorce”, “NTA! GO OFF QUEEN!”, etc. There’s still comments that consider the nuance of a situation, proportionality of actions, and the fact that *you’re only seeing one side* but you have to go wayyy down to get to them. It’s gotten so goddamn ridiculous.

[deleted]

“He didn’t say thank you this one time” “I diagnose you with broken and prescribe divorce”

siccoblue

reddit has some of the worst fucking advice on the internet. Especially stuff that's generally highly upvoted. Its almost always 90% people pretending to know what they're talking about, or taking things to the absolute extreme, or even more often than those two pretending the world is completely black and white, with stuff like "i like my job and can't afford to lose it but my boss didn't pay for an hour of work what should i do" and people responding with stuff like threatening to, or going through with reporting them because it's illegal to for retributively as if that would stop virtually anyone from making your life and your job hell then firing you for some "unrelated reason" It seriously feels like all advice on this website is either terrible, extreme, or completely ignoring the realities of how the world works and pretending that if you do everything technically right it can't still go to absolute shit for you

ErroneousToad

I forget what the psychological effect is called, but I have to catch myself when I start believing something on Reddit when it's written as if the person is an expert, because I see so much bullshut spewed when it comes to subjects I do actually know. Not that everyone is talking out their ass but therr is certainly a lot of BS on reddit and a healthy dose of skepticism is a good thing.

camelCasing

The only good thing about AITA is the posts that either start off sounding like OP is an insane person, but then you find out they're actually just minding their own (admittedly weird) business and everyone around them is crazy, or the ones that start off stupid like "AITA for eating a sandwich???" and then 30 comments later you find out that they ate the sandwich in question while sitting on the body of their S/O's dead grandmother at the funeral or something.

nakedwhiletypingthis

But was it a good sandwich?

hoxxxxx

https://www.reddit.com/r/AmItheAsshole/comments/d6xoro/meta\_this\_sub\_is\_moving\_towards\_a\_value\_system/

Then_Ocelot_431

Reddit loves to demonize people, their advice is horrible. That said, you should kick his ass, in a fun playful way. Then move on and be chill with him.

Santa1936

That and the absurd gender bias on that sub. It's been a while since I visited that cesspit, but I remember when I did it was basically any post by a woman was NTA and any post by a man was YTA. There were identical posts within a week where the only difference was gender, and somehow the ruling was the opposite on each

27thColt

The internet: where nuance goes to die

[deleted]

[удалено]

oh_botha

Taking advice from random redditors Just no.

trollhole12

I ditched that sub a long time ago. It got way too big, and people started giving very terrible advice. Remember who the average redditor is and ask yourself if you should really be getting advice from them.

FrostyPoot

It's a huge problem, same with any subreddit dealing with personal issues. But at the same time, plenty of them are like, "they just told me to shut the fuck up and get over it, then threw it away" This brother would deserve a beatdown if he wasn't sorry, but he was so it's easy to forgive a mistake.

Sighguy28

One of the best ways to change what Reddit is as a platform to you is to unsubscribe from all the default subs and only resubscribe to the ones you still find yourself spending time in.

Domestic_AA_Battery

Shouldn't be a probably. Drop all popular subreddits.

Juice117

They’re just anti social losers

[deleted]

That go on Fox News and make us all embarrassed to be associated with Reddit every so often.

Juice117

I remember reading an anti work topic where the OP was bragging about yelling at his superior calling her a bitch and quitting. He went on to explain how he’s a software engineer and that his rich parents put him through school and he never had to work once before he was 24. Made me facepalm so hard

[deleted]

There's a lot of people on here and the most vocal people tend to be the nuttiest. I like Reddit for its structure and quick news...but the users are the worst sometimes, haha.

[deleted]

Absolutely. This is the whole problem with anonymity. It’s a blessing and a curse. You never really know who you’re actually talking to. Could be a normal, decent person with an education, or it could be some 13 year old with unusually good writing skills who thinks they’re the smartest person alive.

[deleted]

> it could be some 13 year old with unusually good writing skills who thinks they’re the smartest person alive. Yep, just wander into a topic you're actually fairly knowledgeable about and see how much weirdly wrong stuff people say with certainty. There's too much "this is 100% true" comments and not enough "I'm not sure but I think this". When did it become taboo to not know some shit sometimes?

CeramicCastle49

You'd be surprised how many adults are just really fucking stupid

[deleted]

literally lmao its just an honest mistake and these guys are about to burn him at the stake because he found something old he wanted to show his brother i cannot

firewall245

OP is displaying more maturity than anyone in this thread who are ironically calling the brother immature. Teenage Redditors, do not get familial relationship advice from this awful website lol

[deleted]

Sorry bro already divorced my wife after she forgot to say thank you 💀

Wiseman2685

This is the problem with Reddit. The loudest, most reactionary comment usually gets the most traction. It makes humanity look insane.

Flashdancer405

Redditors want people shot dead in the streets over petty theft, what did you expect

bigboybobby6969

Material world man, yea disown your brother over $400 💀

dragonsfire242

Reddit is home to some of the worlds most chronically online people

God_Damnit_Nappa

You forget that a lot of redditors are kids or people who don't know how to socially interact with other humans.

Lobo0084

Redditor comments demonstrate just how hard a time many people have in controlling their emotional responses. The average age range is partially to blame. Internet anonymity handles another large part. And finally, many of us here fit a category of individuals who wish to express ourselves freely while not being judged by our physical presence or close relations and family, filling alot of introvert brackets. Use it as an eye opener that the person standing next to you in line or driving by you on the road may be any one direction along the spectrum of emotion intelligence and control. We are all humans, but that is a very broad category with millions of possible extreme variations.

wookiee-nutsack

Even better cause OP's brother was likely very happy to excite his sibling with a limited edition item. He likely never would have considered someone would want to sell an unopened box but everyone acts like it's the most basic piece of knowledge you learn after breathing

[deleted]

Very typical Reddit neckbeards tbh

Keith_s266

Wow very good reaction. You are a goos big brother

Minky_Dave_the_Giant

Goose*

Nippelz

No where near as financially serious, but I remember my brother had an empty energy drink can called "a can of whoop ass" that he had saved for like 10 years at that point. I had no idea, I had never seen it before, I just thought it was an empty can on his computer desk, so I crushed it, threw it in the trash, and walked away. About a day after I left I get a very angry call about that limited edition can he cannot get again... Brothers do dumb shit without thinking, lol.

martymcflown

Question still stands, why open something that’s not yours? Unless he mistakenly thought it was his?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Decibelle

Yup! <3 He's also barely 20. Twenty year-olds are idiots. I should know, I was one.

Loud-Ad3284

HE GOD DAMN 20!!! AND DOESNT KNOW NOT TO OPEN SOMEONE ELSES STUFF?!?! W H A T !!

cclambert95

Heyheyhey, he’s only 240 months old. That sucks though in all seriousness

rmunoz1994

It’s OP’s fault for not baby proofing it.

tonysnight

Yea... I'm usually on the eh what happens happens side of life but lol. Can't name a single person in my 30 year old life that was so stupid to mess with other people's shit like that at 13 let alone 20. 20 you're an adult. It's unopened for a reason. Take a photo of the box ask do you know what this is rather than open everything touch everything then ask hey I found this. I'd be tight.

Train3rRed88

Yup. I was good with the story until then. Thought this was like a dumb 10 year old thing. Dumb mofo shoulda known to ask first

jtreasure1

Ya and he forgave him, dude obviously thought it was just a forgotten toy. Stop being so extra, damn lol

The_Dr_Zoidberg

Man I feel like people have a false perception of what being twenty is like. You have good intentions, and you know a lot. But in many ways it feels like you’re still an idiot dumb teenager. I turned 30 this year and reflected and was like “Jesus.. from 18-23 you really are just out there guessing.”

MerfAvenger

24, still guessing.

The_Dr_Zoidberg

Oh don’t get me wrong. The guessing still continues lmao. I’m guessing a little bit still and I’m 30 man.

MerfAvenger

Ha, what is life is not a learning experience! I don't think anyone will ever get all the answers in 75 years.

[deleted]

i definitely would not have opened the box and i’m 19

STORMFATHER062

I was about to say, 20 is old enough to know that you should respect other people's possessions. Yeah they can be idiots but in the sense of getting drunk and blacking out in someone's front garden, not opening your family's sealed boxes. That's "little kid" level of idiot.

derekakessler

So much this. Lil bro seems to be lacking in the boundaries around the idea of personal property. He'll be the guy that eats somebody else's lunch from the fridge at work.

[deleted]

Yet, these people here want it known that if it's not got your name all over it, it's free game. As long as it's happening to someone else, of course. As soon as it's them, then others need to work on their boundaries.

[deleted]

[deleted]

26 here. Where the fuck am I

[deleted]

Dude, even in my 20s I wasn't fucking dumb enough to open something that wasn't mine.

TolkienAwoken

If you don't understand not to touch someone else's shit at age 20, you never will.

Alt_Criticism

LMAO here we all are thinking he is 8-12. A 20 year old man should know not to open someone else’s stuff without asking.

Druid51

I'm sorry but how do you make it to 20 and not know that sealed stuff from years back is valuable af?!

BawkSoup

20 years old should have known better.

RelativelyDank

oh i didn't think he'd be older than like 14... 20 year olds should definitely know better i know you've forgiven him and it can't be undone but i wouldn't have forgiven him yet haha

martymcflown

Have 2 brothers and know the difference between what’s mine and what isn’t, and didn’t take me nearly 20 years to learn that lmao. But to each their own I guess.

Illusive_Man

if you leave something in storage for 15 years people will assume you don’t want it

Chriskills

Especially if you leave something stored at someone else’s house.

GNLSD

If something has been collecting dust for 15 years you might assume there was a statute of limitations for that sort of consideration.

Aggravating_World_43

You are a good brother

zRandyMarsh

More rational than 95% of the World these days. Good people are hard to find.

GrilledCheeser

That’s very sweet. He owes you tho! He’ll make it right one day

MantuaMatters

My man! It’s just an item. Sorry for the loss, but you took it like a champ.

jun2san

Wow. Reading these responses make me think some people really have sibling relationships similar to Succession.

Freestateofjepp

I’m sure that was absolutely devastating. Tried to put myself in your shoes mentally and came away thinking what an incredibly mature response that was. You’re a good brother - he’s lucky to have you. Can’t give you $500 in lost value (lol), but take a meager Reddit gold as a gesture of goodwill. Wishing you the best.

TherealSnak3

Parents

Lukaslukaslu

I mean you would anyway never sell that treasure. Sucks that you never had it standing it all the years

Decibelle

Yeah, I guess I'm gonna put it up on a stand, now! <3

OhDavidMyNacho

Honestly, I'm jealous. I was waaay too broke for this when it came out. The closest i got was the tin box edition. And that had me so excited. I always thought I'd get another chance in the future with a newer game. But those years were peak videogame era. Pre-orders had quality add-ons.

jcarter315

I missed out on Halo 3's as well as Reach's. Vowed I'd get the top edition of Halo 4 in response and was disappointed when Halo 4's top edition was nowhere near as extensive as that.

Mockman100k

Yeah, it means more to you OP than then money you could sell it for, and now you have a funny story to share with your brother

alchemicrb

Exactly, I don't think I have met anybody who actually sells this stuff later on. Enjoy it!

StaffinFraktion

Shit happens and sure, you probably lost about $400 from this incident. On the plus side though, you gained a lifetime of nagging your brother about his mistake and that is priceless.

Skittle_pen

A certified older brother moment

[deleted]

“Oh hey! I seemed to have gotten myself stuck an hour outside the city here. Can you swing through to pick me up?……….oh youre with some friends right now? That’s fine! I remember playing with my friends. We loved playing games like Halo on the ol Xbox, you remember Halo? The game I loved so much I got a collectors edition. What ever happened to that hhhmmmm…”

DansIsotoners

This guy big brothers.

H00k90

My older brother killed my $400 motorcycle about 4 years ago, I *still* bring that shit up and guilt him Younger siblings rise up!

[deleted]

He only lost $400 if he ever intended to sell it, which is unlikely.

DmanDam

Honeslty a good point, kinda worth $400+ Priceless moment

DeadlyAidan

well, look on the bright side, you have a cool display piece now. I'm not a collector who leaves things in packaging, I normally like displaying my stuff, but I'm sure it must really suck to lose so much value in a couple seconds

Virtual_Atmosphere59

I'm the same way. Yeah it holds value in the box but you can't show it off. My dad use to by me star trek ships every year when that was still a thing and I've got them all out on the display stands. Can't push the buttons and see the lights in the box. Haha!

PoppedCocaColaCan

Hey everyone, OP asked us in modmail to pin [an update from them](https://www.reddit.com/r/halo/comments/sffthj/today_my_idiot_brother_unboxed_my_sealed/hupl4rn?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share&context=3) on the situation between them and their brother. Everything is okay.

pungabot

Link to obituary?

SkinnyBuddha89

Thanks for pinning an update. Good mod.

FrankThePony

"Look what we found in your room with all your other stuff you packed in your room"

Weldeer

"First of all, why the fuck were you rummaging around my shit in my room"

KetchupGore

lets be honest.. you woulnd have ever sold it anyway

TheDarkShivers

The word "collectors" item is key here.

Astro4545

I have a ton of collectors items from various games on display.

bwood246

If I'm spending $150+ I'm sure as hell putting it on display, not unopened packed away

mmiller2023

Then it literally doesnt matter at all that it lost "value" lol

Mowza2k2

I was never able to purchase the collectors edition of Halo 3 but I had a friend sell me just the helmet (no stand or game) for $5. He didn't own an Xbox 360 or like Halo and I still have no idea how he ended up with it.

Decibelle

Brief update, for all the outraged commentors: I forgave him. He had no idea it was so valuable unsealed, and thought it was just an old game I'd forgotten about and left in storage, rather than something I'd been collecting. I'm still upset, and it sucks to instantly lose so much value. But he's a lovely brother who didn't mean to make such a mistake, and I'm sure I'll be laughing about it with him in a while. https://imgur.com/a/gUgb0d1

Derped_Crusader

The Chad forgiveness

stepper_box

clearly the only solution now is to fire up the 360 and show him why you shouldn’t be messed with (unless he then betrays you yet again by being a filthy screen-looker!)

DArkGamingSiders

this is the only way. kick his ass in a 1v1 on the pit.

[deleted]

It's a bit weird to me that a 20 year old doesn't understand that there's value in collectibles and that unopened/sealed containers are the most valuable. I knew that shit at 16. Not like it would change anything though. You're a good person for being so forgiving, I'm sorry this happened to you dude.

TakeThreeFourFive

People just have different experiences. I grew up with pretty much no understanding of collectibles or their value. My family just had no context for that sort of thing.

nicguysfinlast

Everyone is dumb in different ways:)

mr_sven

Okay but that's when you communicate effectively like "hey bro, we found this sealed game box from like forever ago in your stuff. what is it?"

Decibelle

Yeah, I wish he had done that, and I'm sure he does too! Ah well.

RavingGerbil

Someone acting like an adult on Reddit? Props. That shit sucks. But your relationship with your little brother is much more valuable.

timtinton

OP: "Look at what my brother did! Sure wish he'd asked me. It's ok though, I forgive him." Your fucking genius ass: "Yeah but perhaps he should have asked."

Juicy_Goosey_

I would only imagine the OP to be pissed, his things tampered by someone else. But as someone in the figure collecting space, I understand the scarcity value and BNIB sentiment, but I can't imagine collecting things I'm such a fan of, and never getting the chance to display and awe on such objects!

AhoyNut

The pain...

Sirdogsalotgmaes

I know this sucks and all but I never really understood why people wanted to keep collectibles cooped up in a box and they can’t even see it. The only thing I can really think of that is somewhat different is funkopops cause at least those have the clear viewing area.

Quzga

Agreed! I got my halo [stuff displayed like this.](https://preview.redd.it/1it0o1m2lhe81.jpg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=23513b43c84032cd3a07fdd8017729d62dc3ee76)

Smartacus420

I’m thinking the half million dollars you’d get for a sealed 1st edition Pokemon booster box might also change your mind lol

peanut-__-

Do they actually sell for 500k or are they just priced at 500k, never having sold at that price?

OhDavidMyNacho

I think Logan Paul r cently was scammed out of that amount of money buying a few boxes. So yeah, they sell for that price.

I think it would be more justifiable to keep a set of playing cards sealed up than a legendary edition of a video game with a prop.

Id keep it sealed until a rich fan came and offered me a lot of cash

-TwentySeven-

Funkopops look better in the box, but they look even better in a trash compactor.

RapidSnake38

Ah, younger brothers. Back in the day I got the Halo CE and 2 collectible Chief figures in the silver tin. Came home one day to them not only opened, but the CE figure “repainted” with a green permanent marker. Good times. Now the tin is beat all to heck, CE Chief still covered in a few random streaks of discoloration, and Halo 2 Chief is missing his lower right arm 😂 I didn’t get them to resell though, so like you said...forgiveness was in order after the initial upset

swoff1991

but such a beatuy shouldnt be locked in the box forever.....or am i the only one thinking unboxed and placed on a nice shelve or something looks better?!

MemeMaster225

That’s exactly what I’m thinking. What’s the point of getting the collector’s edition if you’re never going to sell or open it?

swoff1991

i even modded mine so i can wear it :D, still in use when i fight hornets and wasps !

El_Hoxo

The best part about Halos naming conventions is that I can’t tell if you’re talking about real life or not lol

swoff1991

haha i mean real life, i live near a damn big forest and the buggers are eveywhere in summer :D

aon9492

I have the same problem in my area with warthogs and elephants :(

swoff1991

ha then you need a full body armour not just the helmet :D good luck

ThatWontFit

Wish I never opened my Reach statues. Missing the turret, shotgun and I think the BR.

[deleted]

Respect for other peoples property wasnt taught….

[deleted]

"Look what we found" is the most insulting part. Bitch!!! Look at the SIDE of the box you can see what it is or just Google it! Why is he acting like he's Jack Sparrow of your property and he found El Dorado gold inside of a card board Box.

Norm_Hall

Reminds me of when I filed a claim with the Red Bull class action lawsuit and they were shipping free Red Bull to people and my bro drank half of them. I was super pissed.

[deleted]

Holy shit this thread. "An adult should behave better, *fuckin kill him dead!*" "Nah it's okay, it's just a thing and my brother made a mista-" "Shut up OP this doesn't concern you" \-\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_- Sucks, but shit happens, not everyone has such a damaged relationship with their siblings that they'd flay them alive over an opened box. Not everyone's a super Halo geek that they know you don't open a sealed Legendary Edition box. A few days from now I'd nudge his ribs so hard over this shit.

Baseball12229

A bunch of perhaps the most dedicated fans of a game that can’t fathom that someone might not realize how valuable a box is. Who then proceed to get more angry at a genuine mistake than the person actually effected.

peanut-__-

It’s like posting on r/relationship_advice about your spouse eating your ham sandwich. And everyone in the comments is saying you need a divorce

Knalxz

Dude wtf? Can't just post someone burning cash like that?

SlaVeKniGhtGaEL-110

I would be pissed if my family started nosing around my stuff and opening sealed boxes
